As it stands, anyone who is running a small business, from freelancer designers to plumbers, has to keep hold of all the receipts they collect from any purchase they make through the business. They then have to go through the arduous process of copying all of those receipts into a spreadsheet to pass on to their accountant.
Why is this a problem?• It’s an extremely time consuming task, and when it’s your business, time
equals money.
• If receipts get lost or damaged to the point they are no longer legible, they cannot go through the business which means you lose out in the VAT returns.
• Storing dozens of receipts a week in drawers, cupboards and shoe boxes is difficult to manage and maintain. This also makes tracking down individual receipts a difficult task.
• More importantly, no-one wants to spend their time doing any the above.

• 1Tap Receipts is a great app that covers the majority of the bases when it comes to helping small businesses with their receipts. This surprised me as I’ve never heard of it or come across it before.
• 1Tap and Receipt Bank would be my direct competition if I was to focus my product on small businesses.
• Expensify has some great functionality, but it built around more of an enterprise model so I don’t believe it would be direct competition.
• There are dozens of ‘mobile scanning’ apps out there, but Evernote’s ‘ Scannable was the only one I found that uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition).
• 1Tap has everything, but there must be a reason for it not having many downloads. I’m hoping it’s not because there isn’t the demand for a product like this. My user research should shed some light on this.
• If we were to focus on designing and building the core functionality well, and marketing the app in the right way, we could still make an impact in the market.

• Every business owner I spoke to is currently having to copy their receipts into a spreadsheet, and they all spoke quite strongly about their frustrations of having to do it.
• Everyone I spoke to also experienced not being able to find an old receipt for an item that needed returning, and they either couldn’t get a full refund, or couldn’t return the item at all.
• Some users seemed to prefer the security of a physical paper receipt compared to a digital one which surprised me.
• The first two points are in-line with my original assumptions, but the third point has highlighted to me that the users will need to be re-assured that the app is safe and secure.

William is a 34 year old business owner from East London. He is recently married with has a two year daughter with another on the way. Most of his work is focused in London doing plumbing and maintenance contracts for management companies which has really grown his business in the last 24 months. He is very tech savvy and is always looking for the next gadget to get his hands on. He runs his life and his business from his phone, whether that be booking events in his calendar, setting weekly reminders to make sure he takes the bins out, to managing his three email addresses.
William has recently been struggling to keep a good balance between work and home due to the increased workload, so he has been looking at ways to streamline the way he works. During the day it is all about work for him and making sure his clients are happy, and only when he gets home from a full day of work can he really tackle anything for his own business.

Scenario 1

One of your new monitors in your office has decided to stop working which you only bought a couple of months ago. You want to find the receipt for this monitor so that you can return it to Argos. You can remember that it could between £200 - £300 and that you bought it in November.
Scenario 2
• The date of purchase was missing from both of the receipt details screen which is a key piece of information.
• Users were finding the filters within the search functionality confusing and out of place. Most implied that they wouldn’t use them unless they really had to.
• One user suggested a ‘batch’ feature on the camera for when a user has multiple receipts to upload.
• Some users also found the language used in a couple of labels unclear.
• One user is currently using a similar application, but preferred this concept vbecause of its easy to use and it has monthly stats at the top of the screen.
• The app was well received by everyone that tested it, and they all bought into the idea.
