Our StoryThrough collective philanthropy, the Fund for Women invests and
advocates by bringing together our knowledge, passion, and commitment toempower women and girls in Delaware to achieve their potential.
In 1993 sixteen visionary women philanthropists were concernedabout a lack of support for women and girls in poverty in Delaware. Theyresearched the status of women and children in poverty and learned thatservices were limited and underfunded. The group proceeded to gather a coreof women Founders and created the Fund for Women at the DelawareCommunity Foundation. The group's initial goal was 1,000 womencontributing $1,000 each to establish a $1 million endowment. Their goalwas reached in 2010 and now the Fund for Women (FFW) has far surpassedtheir goal with an endowment of over $3 million and over 1,700 “Founders.”
From 1993-2012 Swingin' With a Star, a local women’s golf tournament,made the Fund for Women a beneficiary of their annual fundraiser. Thisprovided a critical financial foundation, and their contributions added over$1 million to the endowment fund.
The first grants, totaling $2,500, were distributed in 1994 to twoorganizations: Girls, Inc. and the University of Delaware. To date, we havedistributed over $2,300,000 in grants to more than 130 nonprofitorganizations with programs in Delaware. Our Story, cont. page 23

ABOUT THE FUNDThe Fund for Women is an endowment held at the Delaware CommunityFoundation. The interest from this endowment is given in grants towomen’s and girls’ programs in Delaware each year. All members of ourBoard of Trustees are volunteers.
In 2016, sixteen (16) nonprofit agencies in all three Delaware countiesreceived a total of $178,926 for projects that help women and girls avoidabuse and poverty, improve their physical and mental health, gain financialindependence, and address many other social issues. Please see page 23 ofthis brochure or visit our website to see a list of this year's grantees(www.delcf.org/ffw).
Those who have been fortunate in their lives and livelihoods are helpingwomen and girls overcome the many barriers that may stand in their wayto success. Through the power of collective giving, our unique networkaims to improve the worth and potential of women and girls in Delawareby funding critical projects that meet their needs – from housing tohealth care, from career training to emergency food programs.
While we are proud of the many ways in which we have supportedwomen and girls in Delaware, the need remains strong. We can onlyfund about 15% of the applications submitted each year. With yourhelp, we can do more!

The endowmentorts of the Swingin’ With a Star (SWAS) Golf Tournament, which contributed93 – 2012 in honor of Founder Betsy Rawls.– to help Delaware women and girls reach their full potential.
FUND FOR WOMEN GRANTSSince 1993, the Fund has awarded over $2.3 millionin grants to hundreds of nonprofit programsstatewide.
Grant applications are due in January, and the awardsare announced in May. The application is availableonline beginning in December each year.
STATEWIDEIn maintaining and growing our $3.1 million endowment, our annualexpenses are kept very low. Our primary expenses are to support eventsand mailings that help us increase our endowment by adding new Founders.We work within each county to attract new philanthropists for ourstatewide organization. You choose your level of involvement
(no meetings required!), from making a financialcontribution to attending events, organizing events, orother leadership opportunities. We are a volunteer-ledorganization and we welcome your help.
"2018 by 2018" INITIATIVEIn 2010, after reaching the original goal of 1,000 Founders, the Fund'sBoard of Trustees established a new goal to grow the existing endowmentby $1 million before the Fund's 25th Anniversary in 2018. To reach thisgoal, the Fund proposed engaging new Founders while increasing ongoingdonations from existing Founders. 100% of donations paid towardbecoming a Founder are placed in the endowment fund and are applied toour mission.
We are happy to report that we are "on track" to meet this goal(formerly called "Next Million" Campaign) and are re-naming the goal"2018 by 2018" Initiative as we would like to reach the double milestone of"Next Million" and increase our Founders to 2,018 strong!

Our Story, cont.
In 2005 FFW established the Driving Force Award to honor Founderswho, through their actions, made major contributions to our growth. The firstDriving Force Award was awarded to the Swingin' With a Star board. TheDriving Force Award honoree is celebrated each year in May at the GrantsAward Event. In 2007 the Fund created the First Founder Award to honor awoman who has been an outstanding philanthropist in Delaware, and thisaward is presented at the annual fall breakfast.
As the FFW grew, the organization actively worked to establishcommittees in each of the three Delaware counties to ensure that the FFWreaches women statewide in both Founders and grant recipients. Eachcounty maintains a development committee responsible for growing theFounder base in their area. Sussex County, whose designated committeebegan in 2007, has had particular success with over 250 Founders, manylearning about the Fund for Women through an annual spring fashion show.
The board of trustees of FFW held a strategic planning meeting inearly 2015 to visualize and shape the future for FFW. As a result, ourmission and vision statements were expanded to incorporate advocacy andvolunteerism. It was also decided to take a closer look at our grants andendowment growth.
In celebration of the success to date and the bright future, we held astatewide Fund for Women Day on September 30, 2015, beginning with theAnnual First Founders Breakfast (New Castle County). The First FoundersAward honoree at the breakfast was Delaware’s First Lady Carla Markell.Lunch was with our legislators in Dover (Kent County), where Governor JackMarkell proclaimed September 30, Fund for Women Day in Delaware. Theday climaxed with a Rehoboth cocktail reception (Sussex County). Duringthe course of Fund for Women Day, we successfully recruited 50 newFounders to join us in our worthwhile mission!
The current Fund for Women board is excited to continue the journeyof harnessing the collective power of women's philanthropy set forth by theFirst Founders! We welcome all to become Founders and join us as we focuson helping to empower women and girls in Delaware through collectivephilanthropy.
