The university’s Faculty of Engineering has contributed greatly to this ranking, with impactful research, outstanding teaching performance and strong partnerships with industry. The Faculty has 33 research chairs, $41.5M in external research funding and $27.8M in new industrial projects. With this pedigree for excellence, McMaster Engineering needed a recruitment partner that could deliver the best talent and help shorten the hiring process, so it could keep up its culture of distinction. The challenge before finding ResearchGate McMaster Engineering strives for excellence in everything it does, and continual improvement is a phrase synonymous with the institution. This doesn’t stop at the talent it hires – it applies to the process too. Previously, the Faculty had used various platforms and tools to advertise jobs, but that didn’t always mean a quick hiring process. Alongside focusing on ensuring a diverse faculty, the faculty needed a partner which could help it reach more people, quickly. Andrea Colbert-DeGeit, Executive Officer and Executive Assistant to the Dean of Engineering, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of policies and best practices around faculty recruitment in the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University, which includes multiple partnerships, all feeding into one central system. While use of some services was mandatory, there wasn’t one partner which stood out from the crowd. Then, she was approached by colleagues who brought ResearchGate to her attention. They valued ResearchGate’s unprecedented reach – both in terms of disciplines and international scope – to facilitate net opportunities with an untapped pool of candidates. Since starting to use ResearchGate for job postings, McMaster Engineering hasn’t looked back. A dedicated account manager has worked with the institution to identify areas which could be improved upon – such as optimizing job posts, by coordinating articles about McMaster faculty to appear alongside job ads, and also by bringing together the departments using ResearchGate, in order for the institution to achieve a strategic pricing discount on job posts across departments.

Now, the Engineering, Science, and Health Sciences faculties use the tool on a regular basis – using it to source faculty hires to great effect.

What’s more, the Faculty now reaches a wider pool of people, thanks to ResearchGate’s 16 million validated members, and 150 million monthly site visits. In fact, the Faculty of Engineering alone has achieved over 55,000 unique views of its job posts, leading to nearly 2,000 more applications which it would not have otherwise guaranteed.
