February 18, 2005 Dear Parents and Sponsors, Every year the American Overseas School of Rome holds its annual Mayfair festival. The Mayfair this

year will take place on Saturday, May 14th from 11:00 until 16:00 at AOSR. This event is one of the largest annual gatherings of Rome’s International Community, attracting over 2,000 people. As a parent, participating in this event represents a wonderful opportunity to show your support for AOSR. There are many ways to participate in Mayfair 2005. We encourage you to sign-up as a volunteer in any of the numerous activities that take place at the Mayfair. Depending on your interests, you can volunteer to assist the ladies of the PTO with the International Food Court, the elementary school games, the book sale, the raffle, the auctions, the booster bar . . . and many more. Sign-up will take place in April. An additional show of support is to donate either a financial contribution and/or business products to be offered as auction and raffle items. AOSR relies so much on the generosity of parents, businesses and organizations such as yours. As a donor your name will be listed as a sponsor in both the Mayfair 2005 promotional materials and the official Mayfair 2005 program. If your donation exceeds 300 euro, your name will also be placed on our school’s official website. So please, take a moment to consider making a contribution. Please forward any financial contribution and/or prizes to my attention at the school address:

Marina Benetti - MAYFAIR American Overseas School of Rome Via Cassia, 811 Roma 00189 School Telephone: 06/334381 Email: [email protected]

Please follow-up any donation, by sending an email to my attention, so that I can confirm receipt. On behalf of AOSR, I thank you in advance for any financial contribution you may wish to make this year. I remain at your disposal for any questions you may have. Sincerely, Marina Benetti Mayfair 2005 Coordinator

Did you know that if you are an AOSR parent, automatically you’re a member of the PTO? The PTO is a group of parent volunteers that work with the teachers and school administration to make our school the best it can be for our children. We accomplish this in two ways. The first is through fundraising. Our main fundraising activities are the Boutique, the Booster Bar and Mayfair, the biggest event of the Spring. The second way the PTO helps the school is by organizing programs and projects that involve all the children at school. We organize holiday parties, teacher appreciation lunches, student publishing pro-jects, boarder birthday cakes, Sports Days and much more. We also publish the Falcon Flyer. The PTO meets every month to plan and dis-cuss the things we would like to do as an organiza-tion. You’re invited to our next PTO meeting on March 14 at 9:30 in the Boutique. AOSR’s biggest Spring Event, Mayfair, is scheduled for Saturday, May 14. This spring celebra-tion, our biggest fundraiser of the year, is a fun-filled day with games, entertainment, auctions, food from all over the world, book sales, a Booster Bar and much more. The smell of food and the sound of mu-sic, laughter and happy voices, are just a few of the things I remember from last year. Please join us in making this year’s event a memorable one! So mark your calendars, bring a cup of coffee, tea or soda with you to our next meeting on March 14 at 9:30 in the Boutique. There will be an important Mayfair meeting following the PTO meeting. I look forward to seeing you there. By Cathy Garbinsky, PTO Secretary

March brings Spring to the Boutique Hope springs eternal that the weather will warm up soon! In the Boutique from March 1st, we will begin taking Spring and Summer clothing for sale and will no longer accept winter items. So start your Spring cleaning to unearth those clothes still in great condition that no longer fit you or your children and make some money for yourself and the school by con-signing them. The green tags from December will go Half-Price on March 15th, so vendors please come by the week before to retrieve any unsold items you would like back. Any items you don't need back will go on Half-Price sale or eventually to charity. Our Half-

Price sales have been very successful and the 50 cent racks are especially popular. Christiane Krippl has been collecting car loads of clothing for charity dona-tions and many items have found their way to Indone-sia for Tsunami Relief. She especially needs infant clothing and summer T-shirts. I would also like to offer some information for anyone who has a sewing machine that needs servic-ing or repairs. There is a shop that will repair any brand or model of sewing machine. It is called Centro Assistenza Tecnica and is located on Via Conca D'Oro, 50. Their telephone is 06 8172931. Italian, French, English and Arabic are spoken and they com-plete the work quickly and efficiently. Thanks to Filly for finding it! By Susan Haight, Boutique Coordinator Booster Bar Corner The Booster Bar continues to have a record-setting year. In January, there were Booster Bars sponsored by the Third Grade, the Basketball team and the High School Student Council. All three groups did a great job and earned over 300 euros for their efforts! The Pre-K, Cheerleaders and the Honor’s Choir will sponsor upcoming booster bars. There are still a few Booster Bars dates avail-able for the spring semester. If your group wants to sponsor one, please contact Susan Haight at 06-3031-0876 or see her in the boutique on any Tuesday. Everyone is invited to join us for the fun on Friday afternoons and get great sandwiches and treats. Or send your kids to school with some extra change so they can grab a burger on the way to the bus. Remember that operating the Booster Bar takes a whole team of volunteers: people to shop, keep track of the inventory, order meat and buns and, of course, to grill. We are always looking for new volunteers and it’s a fun way to meet people at the school. Contact Astrid Van Der Does De Willebois at 06 30361550 or Donna Ferguson at 06 3313652 to volunteer now!

Next PTO Meeting is Monday, March 14th

@ 9:30 a.m. in the Boutique

Hope to see you there!!

PPAC NEWS Principal Parent Advisory Committee

As a follow-up to the notes that were printed in the December/January Issue of the Falcon Flyer, the Prin-cipal reports that:

♦ A lunchtime monitor is now on duty during all lunch periods, including the Middle School and High School lunches, to help supervise students. This person is in addition to the teachers who are on duty dur-ing the ES lunch shifts.

♦ There will be a Middle School Wellness Day on Thursday, April 28th. Students will rotate through work-

shops that will include drugs and alcohol awareness, the effects of smoking on the body, stress release mechanisms, hygiene, and other topics of interest.

♦ Middle States re-accreditation work is taking place.

Minutes of Meeting from January 24, 2005

♦ The AOSR School Directory was distributed in December to all AOSR families. A packet containing Class Lists by Grade Level was sent home at the beginning of February. Family emails were not pub-lished in the directory for reasons of privacy and security. It was suggested that a monthly email contain-ing a link to the latest edition of the Falcon Flyer be sent to all parents alerting them to the fact that the new edition is online.

♦ Student Belongings: The principal will remind students to lock their cell phones and other valuables in

their lockers during the school day. These items should not be left in the gym during PE classes or after school during practices.

♦ Science Laboratories: The upgrading of the labs will entail a substantial financial investment. The PTO

has proposed to help support this effort with funds raised at the annual Mayfair. ♦ Immunization Records: The principal will meet with the nurse to review immunization requirements in

Italy and the US.

Pre-K School News

If You’re Happy and You Know It… The Pre-K 3’s are talking about feelings this month. They are singing songs and reading stories about being happy, sad, mad, tired and excited. The children are looking in mirrors and talking about different expressions used for each emotion and we are using our digital camera to document those expressions. We are talking about what to do when they feel these emotions and how they can help themselves if they are feeling mad, sad or tired. Their ex-pressions and conversations are being made into a book that children will be able to look at in our classroom. A preview follows:

Teacher: “What makes you sad?”

Some of the children’s answers: “When my daddy goes away from school.” “When somebody yells at me.” “When my mommy is gone.” Some of the children’s sad faces: Teacher: “What makes you angry?” Some of the children’s responses: “If someone takes a toy away from me, then I

am mad!” “My sister pulling my hair makes me angry.” “If Mommy tells me I need to brush my teeth, I get angry.”

Some of the children’s angry faces: Teacher: “What makes you happy?” Some of the children’s replies: “Smiling makes me happy” “I am happy when I see my mom.” “I am happy when my brother wakes me up with a smile.”

Some of the children’s happy faces: Save the Date: Friday, March 18th

Kindergarten & Elementary School News

Elementary School Art By Ms. Phoebe Cosantino

E.S. art students have been reviewing the basic concepts ,line, shape, color, and learning about the “Modern Masters”. They saw how Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Henry Matisse used vivid colors and vari-ous shapes in their paintings. The students used special 3D glasses to look at the paintings and were excited to see how the colors and shapes vibrated and appeared three dimensional. Then the students painted their own work concentrating on line, shape, and color. They used the glasses to see how their work developed into inter-esting colorful designs. The paintings are displayed in the lunchroom and bar area. Kindergarten has learned about penguins in their class. In art, they made clay penguins and painted them. Grade 1 learned more about animals in class. In art, they drew and painted large ani-mals. Students are practicing symmetrical designs. Grades 4 and 5 are writing their name and words, then cutting them out to make paper designs. Grade 3 have studied about knights and castles in their class. In art they made and painted clay castles.

Elementary Computers By Mr. Tebo, AOSR Teacher

We’ve been learning some really great things in elementary computers this month. All grades have been exploring the use of a program called Inspiration. The younger grades have been playing word games, and the older grades have been making concept webs with this software. Students have also started Internet re-search. Second grade has looked at virtual cave paint-ings and are taking a geographical adventure. Third grade is going to start a planet study soon. Fourth grade is looking at sea animals and the health of the oceans, while Fifth Grade has studied bamboo and is currently researching ancient Roman life. Kindergarten-ers and First Graders continue to have a blast playing JumpStart games. If you would like to visit our virtual classroom, visit www.aosr.org, click on school pages, fac-ulty, Mr. Tebo, and Elementary Computers.

Second Grade Out About. By Ms. Ciuffreda, 2nd grade Teacher On February 16th, both second grade classes visited the Prehistoric section of the Pigorini museum at E.U.R. The children had studied all about Early man and

were able to see fossils, tombs with skeletons, dugout canoes, stone and bone tools. We also saw Bronze Age tools and pots, jewelry and delightful miniature “Venus” statues. The children were very attentive and well be-haved. We were proud of them. Thank you to the par-ents who accompanied us to the museum.

2nd grade students speak on the fundraising for the Tsunami victims

Friday, my class and I went to the field and walked around it 5 times. We did this to help the needy children in Indonesia. We also drew pictures and painted them and decorated picture frames with our photos in it. We sold them to the parents. The money we raised, we gave to Indonesia.

By Margherita Ren Luca Vaiani On Friday, the whole school had a Walk-a-Thon. Pre-K walked around the Villa, Kinder and 1st around the quad, 2nd around the field, 3rd around the field and ten-nis courts and 4th and 5th ALL around the school. After we sang " Make it a Better Place."

By Jason Atwood On Friday, we walked around the field to get money for the people who lived where the Tsunami came. When we had finished, we all went together and sang. Some people cried.

Third Grade News By Ms. Rumsby, 3rd grade Teacher Our solar system projects are amazing. What fantastic models were made and how many things we learned. It’s strange to think that the sun is a star, a very average, middle-sized star and that it takes 8 min-utes for light from the sun to reach our planet. We’re off in March to visit the Palombini coffee factory, caffeine is everywhere and we’ll be checking out the complex machines they use for grinding it too. The Mencacci family are always so fantastic about allow-ing us to visit there, so a big thank you to them.

SADNESS

Sadness is white

Like snowflakes slowly falling on the ground Like a layer of gloom

That covers your happiness Sadness is lonely.

By Margherita Cornaglia

FURY AND ANGER

Fury is gray like a balloon exploding Like a giant tsunami crashing over houses and

buildings. Bringing tears and misery to everyone

Causing death and tragedies.

Anger is black like rainclouds dumping down rain Soaking everything below it. Trying to get rid of its rage, Trying to get its revenge.

By Alea McFarlane

JOY

Joy is blue like my grandparents eyes,

Smiling at me and ready to hug me and kiss me Because they are happy to see me.

They help me when I am sick Or when I need help with my homework

And when I need them they are there.

By Eugenio Foco

TRANQUILITY

Tranquility is yellow like a star in the sky, Shining into my bedroom, Bringing light and silence.

I lie in my bed, falling asleep while the stars help me dream.

TRUST

Trust is green like rare emeralds. We dig and search until we find them.

Trust is hard to find.

Fifth Grade News By Mrs. Hogan, 5th grade Teacher

The fifth Grade has been involved in several projects which are linked to the walk for the Tsunami victims. We have made picture frames from split bamboo which we crafted ourselves in the classroom. The results were quite professional and really did justice to the cute photographs that Mr. Tebo had taken of the individual students. We furthered our investigation into bamboo and the students did some research through internet. Thank-you again, Mr. Tebo, for your enthusiastic support. Our resulting knowledge was then pooled in an afternoon of question and answer. The fifth grader are also talented poets and have explored different styles of rhyme and rhythm, as well as free poetic writing.

Here are some fine examples of their work:

ATTENTION 11TH GRADE PARENTS: Get ready to get going!

I am thrilled to begin working with the 11th grade students this spring. Individual planning meet-ings will begin mid-March and continue until the end of the school year. All 11th grade students will have the opportunity to sit down with me to:

ξ Talk about career and educational goals

ξ Plan their courses for next year

ξ Think about exciting summer opportunities

ξ Devise a list of college and universities to re-search.

Towards the end of the school year, I will host a College Night for in-terested 11th Grade Parents. There, we will discuss the application process as it applies to schools or programs around the world. I hope that this meeting will be highly informative and fun.

THIRD GRADE VISIT TO CASTEL SANT’ANGELO By SOPHIA BROWN

On a windy Wednesday, January 26th, we went on a bus and I was Claudia’s partner. First, we went inside a place where there were four models of the castle. Then, we went to a bastion from where the archers used to fire arrows at the enemy and we had snack there. I had a banana. Next, we entered a room that had arms and armor, gold coins and a kid’s suit of armor. We ate lunch in the courtyard of the well where there was a huge ballista that fired long arrows. After, we saw more armor and in the room next to it there was an enor-mous treasure box ( a coffer) that could not fit through the door. It was so big that a kid could stand up in it and it was as long as a five year old. Then, we went up to the very top of the castle where there is an angel holding up a sword. We looked down and saw all of Rome. On our way down we walked along all the ramparts and passed the four bastions. When we went to the gift shop to buy a souvenir the shop was closed and we had to go.

All the third graders and teachers wish Sophia a speedy recovery!
