Page 1: HELP YOU ADDRESS YOUR PARENTING CHALLENGES ARE Ready … · Being aware of our strengths, our child’s strengths and knowing what works for everyone is the first step toward finding

What I have discovered from my own experience as a parent and my work with countless families is that one of the most effective ways of finding solutions to any challenge is to face it from a place of strength. When you are immersed in your challenges it can often be very difficult to see the wood from the trees never mind find effective solutions to dealing with the problems.

Being aware of our strengths, our child’s strengths and knowing what works for everyone is the first step toward finding solutions to your parenting challenges.

Do you consciously tap into and use these wonderful resources to help you face your challenges? When I do this, it works every time.

Have you lost the joy in your parenting? Are you struggling to know what to do? Are you often so overwhelmed that you feel you are just getting through each day rather than actually enjoying it?

Sound familiar? Hang in there, I can help you. Take a look at this list. Are you experiencing any of these challenges in your home?

+ Power Struggles with one child in particular?

+ Nagging and Lecturing?

+ One child constantly fighting for your attention?

+ Kids not listening to you?

+ Kids fighting with each other

+ Shouting and yelling in order to be heard?

+ Clutter everywhere, no-one putting anything away except you?

+ Always rushing your kids everywhere?

+ No time for yourself – does the word self-care sound selfish

and a thing of the past?

+ Toddler tantrums or teenage attitudes?

+ Tired, busy and exhausted?

In the examples below, you can probably see that if you were to start with the tools and strategies without first dealing with the other facts, the solution will be temporary , more of a band-aid fix.

Are you aware of your own strengths and how to use them effectively in parenting your children with success? What are they? If you have a partner, what are their strengths?

— Understanding — Compassionate — Caring — Intuitive — Confident

— Innovative — Leader — Determined — Organized — Down to Earth

— Logical — Grounded — Energetic — Good Listener — Good with boundaries

— Flexible — High EQ — Efficient — Practical — Calm under pressure

— Rational — Pragmatic — Encouraging — Thoughtful — Good Communicator

— Curious — Reflective — Do-er — Planner — Open-minded

— Perspective — Courage — Integrity — Vitality — Fairness

— Forgiving — Prudent — Humble — Modest — Grateful

— Humor — Spiritual — Hopeful — Optimistic — Empathetic

— Creative — Evaluates & Analyzes Well

Are you aware of your child’s unique strengths and how you can play to them to help you parent well? What are they?

— Creative — Sensitive — Fun — Out-going — Easy to get along with

— Confident — Determined — Goofy — Resilient — Wears Heart on Sleeve

— Easy-going — Persistent — Smart — Imaginative — Free Spirit

— Open — Reserved — Inquisitive — Reflective — Hesitant

— Analytical — Calm — Relaxed — Care-free — Loves learning

— Self-starter — Ambitious — Independent — Caring — Artistic

— Practical — Curious — Trusting, Giving — Affectionate — Helpful

— Gentle — Friendly — Outgoing — Deep thinker — Motivated

— Humorous — Quirky — Out there — Self-assertive — Compassionate

— Empathetic — Cautious — Gutsy

Here are two examples which highlight how some really common behavior challenges may show up:

• If you are a wing it, fly by the seat of your pants Mom and have a son who loves structure, routine, is organized in his thinking & being, your son may end up fighting you for control.

• If you are highly organized, practical, a Multitasking Queen always doing three things at once, including being ‘with’ your kids, and have a daughter who is sensitive, affectionate and relishes quality time spent with you, your daughter may end up fighting for your undivided attention.

In both these situations, knowing yourself and your kids well and then using and acting on this information, you can put into place some simple things to ease the challenges of controlling or attention seeking behavior. It is from this place of strength that you can then start to use spe-cific parenting tools and strategies that will build your child’s feelings of capability (for control) and connection (for attention).

Here is what I recommend you do next: really get to know your child.

Sit down with a journal and list all your strengths. Then for each child, ask yourself some questions like this? Get curious! Jot down your answers. + What does your child really love doing? Why do you think this is? What is it about this activity that s/he loves?+ Is your child quite content to go with the flow and run around with you?+ Does your child love being in the comfort of their own home?+ Is your child naturally introverted or extroverted? How does your child handle big birthday parties or smaller play dates?+ How does your child deal with excess energy? + How does your child relate to you?+ How does your child express his or her love?+ How does your child like to receive love?+ What are your child’s typical signs of frustration?+ What brings your child peace?+ What does your child need from you? How does this show up?+ When does your child thrive?+ Does your child enjoy new experiences?+ How does your child handle change?

Your answers to these types of questions will be key to implementing successful, positive strategies for dealing with the challenges you face. Finding sustainable solutions takes time and effort. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day! Be kind to yourself, treat yourself with compassion and don’t forget to nurture and nourish yourself in all of it.

If you are prepared to really participate in this type of change process, it will work. I truly believe that every parent has what it takes to parent well. Hopefully some of the information I have given you here will help you find out what internal resources you have and what you can do to get the ball rolling.

Each week you will get more tips from me to help inspire and motivate you to be the best parent you can be. I will help you put the joy back into your parenting so that you can appreciate and really love your life as a Mom.

I look forward to supporting you in your journey.
