Farmers pet hateBadgers are harmless, loved, unique and secretive. They are already under pressure from baiting withdogs, illegal trapping and road kill 50,000animals a year. But the biggest threat of all is fromthe dairy industry.
Farmers hysterically blame them for the spread ofbovine TB even though the real reasons lie muchcloser to home. Modern dairy farming is so intense
that cows cannot cope and are riddled withdiseases and exhausted from over work by beingforced to produce vast quantities of milk. Theirimmune systems are in tatters and most areslaughtered at five or six years old.
To this disaster can be added grossly inaccurate TBtests that allowdiseased animals toreinfect their ownherd or to betransported around
the UK, infectingnew herds.
A 50 million, 10-year, independentinvestigation by topscientists (ISG)concluded that:
Badger culling cannotmeaningfully contribute tothe control of cattle TB.Some badgers do have TB but it is not easily passedon to others. The irony is that it was cattle whospread the disease and it was unheard of inbadgers before the 1950s. They are now targetedas the culprits by farmers who refuse to believe
the science.
Permanent stressA dairy cows new-born babies are taken awayafter a couple of days so humans can have hermilk. Hundreds of thousands of male calves areshot or sold to the veal industry. Made pregnant
again, she has to feed herself, her foetusand produce up to 120 pints of milk a day.Her body cannot cope. This is at the heartof the problem.
Save badgers and cows! The surest way to save badgers is to stopbuying meat and dairy. You will no longerplay a part in cows suffering, its healthierand you will beprotecting theenvironment.
