Get Involved - Conservation Education NOW, for the Future Many years spent working with communal farming communities, has shown that Conservation Education is imperative to the long-term survival of Namibia’s large carnivores. ‘Conservation Education is the process of influencing people's attitudes, emotions, knowledge and behaviours about wildlife and wild places. This is done through the efforts of skilled educators and interpreters, who use a variety of techniques, methods and assessments to reconnect people with the natural world’. FOR OUR FUTURE - Conservation Education stands to benefit the Namibian people as a whole, by increasing awareness and understanding of the intricate environmental issues, promoting greater tolerance of large carnivores outside of reserves and finding practical and workable solutions to the human-wildlife conflict dilemma. The FOR OUR FUTURE programme endeavours to nurture skills and to develop the knowledge of learners and communities, enabling them to contribute to Conservation and the sustainable management of wildlife populations in our vast country. The Namibian Lion Trust Conservation Education programme runs from its base along Etosha’s south-western border; ideally situated to involve schools from the Kunene Region of Namibia but also from abroad, the ‘open-air classroom’ offers local and foreign school-going youth groups the opportunity to participate and to experience the wilderness first hand. In addition, Wildlife Clubs have been established in three rural schools; this initiative has resulted in a number of Conservancies requesting the same.

Our Conservation Programme, typically spanning 3-5 days, involves practical studies on animal behaviour, especially carnivores, their role within the natural ecosystem and the problems facing these animals due to loss of habitat, disease, drought and persecution, as well as farm management and improved livestock protection methods.

Environmental Engagement with Namibia’s Future Farmers: The Curriculum is designed for Primary or Secondary School Wildlife Clubs. The lessons primarily address issues that affect farming communities, and should have a bigger impact on the students since they have first-hand experience. Conservation Education should bring the youth closer to Nature; after all, they are the future Conservancy members – parents, farmers, teachers or potential leaders in their communities. Creating awareness as to the work of the Trust, will have a positive impact on the communities as a whole, as well as the wildlife in the area.
