    Who is Moustafa Ali?

Moustafa Ali is the 3rd child of Mahmoud Ali and Eman Raad. He was born at theLiverpool hospital on the 11th of January 2010, weighing 1.814kg and 41cm long(very small baby). During his mothers pregnancythe Doctors discovered from thefirst ultrasound some abnormal and unusual findings. Not knowing the full extentof his condition, the Doctors offered to abort the child as his current situation wasserious and complicated.

The parents decided to put their trust in Allah and continue with what Allah has

blessed them with.At delivery, Moustafa was born blue (not breathing) and was quickly intubatedwith life support and transported to Sydney Childrens Hospital at Randwick to theChildrens Intensive Care Unit (CICU). After being seen by the specialists whoexamined him, they diagnosed little Moustafa with a rare condition called

    VACTERL.

    What is VACTERL?

VACTERL is a non-random association of birth defects. Each letter in the wordVACTERL stand for a particular organ or structure that is affected. They are:V - Vertebral anomaliesA - Anal atresiaC - Cardiovascular anomalies

T - Tracheoesophageal fistulaE - Esophageal atresiaR - Renal (Kidney) and/or radial anomaliesL - Limb defects

For a patient to be diagnosed with VACTERL it is needed to have three or moredefects detected from the list above.

    Moustafas Condition

In Moustafas case, all organs and structures from the VACTERL list wereaffected. Due to the way the syndrome affected him, further complications had

developed, the list of conditions include:

Being born 2 months premature, Only one lung (due to lung disease), One kidney, Severe Spinal scoliosis, Hemi vertebrae to the left side of his spine, Imperforate anus (no rectum),Vascular ring, Kink in his airway, Complete rings instead of D rings in his airway, Fused and collapsed ribs, One broncos entering the lung instead of three, 6 missing ribs, 2 undeveloped vertebrae in his back, Short tendons in his neck and arm.

He has had several operations/procedures to repair his air way and to clear theobstructions that were in place, most of his operations did not return his problem

to normal condition but instead they just prevented the problems from gettingworse, some of the operations/procedures included:

2 operations on his airway, Stoma operation,TracheostomyJejunostomy for a feeding peg, Hernia operation,Vascular ring repair, 8 bronchoscopes, 2 times for his Hickman line, LaparatomyAnd many more

    Between Life and Death

Ever since Moustafa was 3 days old the consultants and surgeons that over looked

Moustafas case said that he would not live due to the way VACTERL had affected

his body. Almost every week that went by, the doctors offered the parents to

switch off the ventilator and let what they call nature take its course; but with

Allahs help this was never an option for the parents and they did not agree with

    the doctors.

During Moustafas time in hospital, he had gone through so manyoperations but

the doctors did not know what was causing him to have breathing attacks.

Moustafa would lose oxygen from his body causing him to need resuscitation. On

a bad day Moustafa would have up to 15 breathing attacks, all of which would

require him to be resuscitated by the doctors and nurses in the CICU. It took

almost 6 months before the doctors and surgeons realised that it was a series of

problems that together would cause him to have his breathing attacks.

On one occasion he was being resuscitated for over two and half hours, where the

doctors were sure that he would not make it through, but by the will of Allah hekept on pulling through time and time again.

    His slow improvement and future

The Doctors at one stage said that little Moustafa would never go home and that if

he was able to live, the ICU would be his home. However by the will of Allah, the

doctors where wrong as Moustafas body started to adapt to his condition and

there were signs of improvement. The hospital then concluded after careful

monitoring and consultation with the best staff and doctors, that it is a possibility

that Moustafa may be able to be cared for at home. It was a one year process of

planning and preparing the possibility of sending Moustafa home. However this

now requires specialist equipment and intensive training to the parents. The

doctors have remarked; they have never dealt with a patient like Moustafa before.

    What is needed?

At the very least there is a need for funding to bring Moustafa home as this

requires a huge expense, both to the hospital and on the family. The hospital is

funding over $200,000 dollars worth of medical equipment, which includes 2

ventilators, a feeding pump, suction machine, consumables for the medical

machines, 3 tracheotomy devices, and much more.

However, the expenses which the family is required to cover (which are not

supported by the hospital or government agencies) include: A specially customised

van, the extra ongoing cost of medical consumables, a paediatric hospital bed,

customised pram or wheelchair and other day-to-day essentials and equipment to

meet his needs. All these are requirements that the family must fulfil before the

    hospital will discharge Moustafa.

See the cost break down on the next page for further detail

    Breakdown of the costs

    tracheotomy tapes, etc

    Familys costs

    Name QTY Cost Approx.

Van 1 $55,000Van- set up (wheel chair

    modification)*

    1 $60,000-80,000

    Infant Hospital bed 1 $7,500Medical trolley 1 $900On-going costs** ongoing $10,000-20,000 yearlyMedical furnishings 1 $700-1000

    Ventilator trolley 1 $800Feeding pole 1 $300

    * The hospital may fund some minor costs, but the majority of the funds are uponthe family to organise.

**Difficult to determine at this stage as the needs may vary from time to time.

Example: The hospital supplies only a standard amount of certain medical

consumables, if they break or run out, then it is upon the family to purchase more.

Because of Moustafas complex condition, the hospital has informed the parents

that the extra medical consumables may be needed on their expense, as the

hospital only supplies a certain amount each year. As we can see, it is a big burden

on the family and one wage would not be able to sustain all his needs

    Most important for donations

A van that will be modified to his needs, the van needs to be a fairly new model as

modifying the van will be very costly so we only want to do this once to a new

model van, some modifications are, wheel chair access, a bench on a pole to strap

his ventilator down, a crate fixed to his chair for his suction machine, a pole for his

continuous feeds, an oxygen cylinder holder that will also have to be fixed next to

his chair, a box that will be permanently affixed to the van for his emergency

    equipment etc

    How can you help!!!

Its obvious that whatever path of charity someone intends to donate to, Allah will

reward him and raise him up in status.

There are many sick and dying around the world; however youre only capable of

helping that which is in-front of you. Knowing about young Moustafa, will youhelp him come home to his family, to his Mum, Dad and two beautiful sisters?

May Allah reward you for what you give.
