Page 2: Help Manage your Diabetes with Mom’s Meals NourishCare › webres › File › 0425_Diabetes... · 2019-10-23 · Help Manage your Diabetes with Mom ... simple tips: •If the meal

How should I eat Mom’s Meals if I have Diabetes? Follow your eating plan as recommended by your health care provider. Stick to the range of carbohydrates that is recommended for each meal and snack. Here are a few simple tips:

• If the meal carbohydrate level is in your recommended range, you can eat the whole meal.

• If a meal includes a number of carbohydrates that is over your recommended level, you may need to eat a portion of the meal, and save the rest for a snack.

• When it’s time for a snack, you can eat the meal side, such as a roll or fruit, as part of your snack if it is in your health care provider’s recommended range.

You can order meals that are within your recommended level of carbohydrates. Our menus list the number of carbohydrates for entrees (the food included in the sealed tray) as well as for the whole meal (entrée plus sides and beverages) to make your selections easy.

Is sugar off limits for me with Diabetes? Not necessarily. All foods with carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, milk, vegetables, and fruit, can impact a person’s blood glucose level.

Rather than simply avoiding something altogether, eating within a carbohydrate “budget” each day is important for Diabetes management. Everyone’s “budget” is unique, however, and is based on many factors—body weight and weight loss goals, activity level, diabetic medications usage and frequency, age, and other medical conditions. Follow the advice of your health care provider.

How many carbohydrates should I eat?Everyone’s carbohydrate needs are different. Ask your health care provider or your registered dietitian about an eating plan that is right for you. Your plan may include the number of meals and snacks, timing of eating and the grams of carbohydrates you should eat per day to control your blood sugar.

Many people with Diabetes have 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, eating every 4 – 5 hours. Their health care provider may recommend, for example, that they consume between 45 – 60 grams of carbohydrates at a meal, 15 – 20 grams at a snack, and have a total of 180 – 240 grams of carbohydrates per day. Your health care provider may recommend levels higher or lower than these based on factors such as your level of physical activity, medications and calorie needs.

Diabetes is a disease that results in high levels of blood sugar (glucose) circulating throughout the body. It may be managed by following a healthy eating plan that includes a variety of nutritious foods in moderate amounts, consumed at regular intervals throughout each day, engaging in regular exercise, taking medications as prescribed by your health care provider, and closely monitoring blood glucose levels.

At Mom’s Meals NourishCare®, we know that what you eat can make a difference in your health, which is why we provide nutritionally complete, condition appropriate meals to make it easier for those managing a chronic condition.

We recognize the challenge that you may face as you try to manage your Diabetes. At Mom’s Meals NourishCare, we’ve done our best to make this easier for you. Our menus are designed so that you can easily access the information you need to make the best choices. And, since there isn’t just one meal solution to manage Diabetes, we give you the option to choose the meals that best suit your particular needs—every meal, every order.

Here are answers to the more common questions we receive from some of our valued customers living with Diabetes.

What are carbohydrates?Carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients that make up the foods we eat; protein and fat are the other two, in addition to a variety of vitamins and minerals. Foods that provide carbohydrates include grains (breads, pasta, rice), starchy vegetables (corn, peas, potatoes), fruits, dairy and other sweets or sugars. Carbohydrates (in any form) are broken down by the body into glucose (blood sugar), which is the body’s primary and preferred source of energy.

How many carbohydrates are in Mom’s Meals? Most Mom’s Meals have between 80 – 120 grams of carbohydrates. It’s important to understand that there are two carbohydrate amounts—one for the entrée (tray only) and one for the whole meal (entrée plus sides and/or beverages).
