Ladies Oriental ClubBy Carol Grant

The Ladies Oriental Club December meeting was a dinner meeting, with our guest speaker for the evening being Bruce Lott, from the Masonic Homes of Kentucky. He told us all what was happening at the Masonic Homes of Kentucky and the wonderful care they give senior citizens, in our community, as well as the Sproutlings Day Care Center for special care children. Sproutlings was made possible by a gift of $1.2 million from Kosair Charities. We gave Bruce a check for $204.00 for the residents of the home to be used for “fun and fellowship” and our collection of jewelry for the ladies, which Bruce said is always appreciated.

Our Seng Jewelry give-a-way was won by a surprised Teresa Morgan.

The Christmas Party was held on December 9th, with about 50 in attendance, the Ladies Oriental Club was proud to give our check to Jerry Ward, Chairman of the Board, of Kosair Charities, in the amount of $6,650.00, this being the total from all of our fundraisers throughout the year. This makes our total gifts to Kosair Charities….$193,824.65, since our beginnings over75 years ago. We exchanged gifts with each other and enjoyed the music on the piano, by Michael Crush. Michael is the grandson of Frank and Betty Muckey. It was a great party!

At the January meeting we will have the election of officers, the officers will be installed following the election and jump right into their new duties. Good Luck Ladies.

There are many new events and fund raisers planned for the coming year, start the new year out right, by coming to the meetings, listening to the speakers and working for the Kids of Kosair Charities.

Keep a smile on your face – it makes people wonder what you’re up to and then add a soundtrack to your smile by giving a laugh!

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!

several fond memories of special times with my Kosair family.

As the remodeling of our new building comes to a close, I want to thank the Nobility of Kosair for their confidence in the Planning Committee and elected Divan. Such an extraordinary project could have been polarizing for our membership but all of you came together in a spirit harmony and supported us throughout the project. The end result will be a Shrine center that we will all be proud of, a building that will represent the positive values of our Order well into the future. It is noteworthy that the project began in earnest in July; will be completed within nine months and well under the appropriated budget. Congratulations to all of you on this marked achievement and I hope that every Unit and Club will grow and prosper in our new home.

W e h a d s e v e r a l o t h e r accomplishments in 2014 including your Divan successfully operating

the Temple on very well executed budget and preparing internally for the move to our new location. We had significant, positive media exposure this year for both Kosair Shriners and Kosair Charities. Thanks to our webmaster, Noble Darrell Waddell, for expanding our communications via email, our website and social media via Facebook. Our Units and Clubs supported each other with parties and dances like never before. While we created a comparatively small number of new Nobles, our Generalissimo staff, Ritual Cast, Directors Staff and other participating units offered us three, high quality Ceremonials.

Thanks to our Recorder’s office and Shrine Club staff for working with us during an often challenging time of transition. Your hard work and loyalty to Kosair is appreciated by all of the Nobility. To the members of the elected Divan, I appreciate your support of our objectives, your friendship and your commitment to a productive style of fraternal leadership. I wish our Potentate-Elect, Noble

J.R. Riggs, a successful and rewarding year in office. I pledge my continued support to him, the Divan and Nobility as he assumes the often heavy mantle of this office.

As we enter a new year, and move on from design to design, let us not forget the several Nobles who passed through the “Unseen Portal” in 2014. Their memories we cherish as they are now enjoying the benefits and peace of the Eternal Oasis. We must carry on and fulfill the labor they have entrusted to us.In closing, I can sincerely say that I have enjoyed my tenure on the Divan of Kosair and consider it an honor to have served as Potentate. In some small measure, I hope Kosair is better for what I have attempted to give. I look forward to continuing my Masonic and Shrine journey, enjoying friends and making new ones. I will remain at the service of our Fraternity.

Thank you all!Yours In The Faith,B. Shawn Warren, Potentate

see all the smiles on the children’s faces.

Several Funsters did a double duty one Saturday in assisting kids with shopping and then we headed out to Bowman field to see Santa fly in for Spina Bifida children.

It’s always a pleasure for us Funsters, to see smiles on the children’s faces when the Funsters are around and then when Santa flies by, the smiles had grown bigger and bigger.

That’s what our intentions are. That’s to put smiles on kids of all ages from one to a hundred and one, we don’t care as long as they can smile.

The officers this past year, took their positions with pride and integrity. With the new officers, I’m sure we will be directed forward for the kids. With our new officers, let’s show them our support.

Congradulations on new Elective and Appointive Divan members who will guide us forward in our new Temple. So let’s get behind them and assist them in whatever that needs to be done to make this year a great year.

And let’s not forget our Potentate of 2014, Shawn Warren, and his Divan in getting the train moving in the right direction in getting the new temple built.

Let’s not stop there Nobles, we need to stay behind the new Divan of 2015 and his staff in continuing to build OUR Temple stronger and more productive.

For you new Nobles, if you are interested in becoming a Funster, we meet on the same Monday as our Unit Directors meeting. Feel free to come down to our unit and see what we are all about.

Next month is circus month on February 5th through the 8th. We all need to be there to assist the circus chairman in making this one of the best that we have. And if there are any Nobles out there on the Monday before the circus not doing anything, we sure could use you to assist in hanging the banners up and the following Monday, assist us in taking them down but, most of all we need all able body Nobles at the circus to help out with the circus any how, just to make this circus fantastic.

Well! That’s all for now and from me and the Funsters, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dennis (GABBY) Hardin

Can You Name These Kosair Nobles from 2000?

Funsters

Well! From all of us Funsters, we wish all of our brothers and their families had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And we wish that the upcoming year be joyful and bright and that everyone has a safe year.

For the last time, we had a wonderful time for our children and grandchildren, of our annual Christmas party that was held in the ballroom of the old Temple, because next year, it will be held in our new Temple. There were kids of all ages and sizes that came out to see Santa and Mrs. Claus. Everyone had a good time.

We also assisted Kosair Charities in their annual Christmas party that was held at Crowne Plaza. They all came to see Santa and his bride, Mrs. Claus. Not only were the Funsters there but, many different clubs and units assisted in helping out with the children to make their visit easier for Santa and Mrs. Claus. It was fantastic to

As we begin a new year, we look ahead to what lies in store for us.There is a calendar full of challenges ahead for everyone at Kosair.

We have the Kosair Shrine Circus in early February. That is our big event for the spring and sets the tone for the entire year.

In late February, we will be moving to the new location. New

meeting rooms, banquet hall and refreshment station. It will be a challenge to everyone.

The Street Machines members are looking for Spring. We have our annual car show scheduled for April 19, 2015 to be held at the Bullitt County Shrine Club located just outside Shepherdsville, Ky. off of

Highway 44 east. We have had great participation from clubs, units and Nobles everywhere. We will be collecting sponsorship for our trophies and door prizes. Last year we had over 40 trophies and nearly 100 vehicles on display. I hope to see you there.

Then as spring turns into summer we will have the parade season. We all hope to have great weather so

that we can all turn out and shine.

We continue to have our monthly dinners together. Our November Drive and Dine was held at Bistro 42 in Prospect. It is owned by Linda Key, the wife of fellow Noble Marty Key and Joyce and Bob Reader.

Attending the Drive and Dine were Clare and Illustrious Sir Dave Juergens, Janice and Noble Marshall Geoghegan, Pam and Noble Mark Galloway, Billie and Noble Bill Foster, Dorothy and Noble Hubert Huffman and Candy and Noble Ed Embry.

The Kosair Street Machines meet on the fourth Monday of each month (except for December because of the Holidays) at Kosair just after the Unit Directors meeting.

The Boat Club enjoyed another fine year in 2014. During the last quarter of the year, we had the Commodore’s Ball on Saturday, October 4th. In addition to the many Shriners in attendance, there were several tables of ballroom dancers that took advantage of the excellent music by Joey Ethridge’s Mid-Life Crisis band. They had so much fun that they want to be invited back to next year’s Ball. On November 9th, we had our last Boat Club dinner for the year. It was held at Mike Linnig’s on the river. There were 29 members/spouses in attendance.

Fred Duke has done a great job in setting up dinner opportunities throughout the year. We appreciate Fred’s efforts, and enjoyed each outing. The last event for the year was the annual Boat Club Christmas Dinner at the Temple on Thursday, December 18th. A great time was had by all.

Lady Barb and I want to thank all of the Boat Club members and their spouses for participating in all of the various functions that we had, and for making this such an enjoyable year. I also want to say a special thanks to Sherry Gott and Donna Etheridge for their tireless help all year. They both did whatever was needed to make a successful event or function. Thanks again. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Probably by the time you read this Christmas 2014 will be over and we’ll be into year 2015. Hopefully Kosair will have moved into its new home, or will shortly. I believe the change will be good for Kosair by bringing in new membership and renewing old member enthusiasm.

During the past year several Transportation Unit members, or spouses, had some serious health issues. The latest is Brad Clark who recently suffered a broken hip. He was at the Corvette plant in Bowling Green when it happened so he had an uncomfortable ride coming home. I believe most readers know, or know of, Noble Carroll Laird. He recently became a 50 year member of Kosair. He is also a member of the Transportation Unit (for over 15 years) and has donated many hours driving children to and from medical appointments as needed. When you see Carroll give him a pat on the back for his Kosair contributions (also, for what it’s worth, he has never been known to turn down a free drink or free lunch).

As for our trip load for the October 15th through November 18th time frame we had 7 trips and drove 1807 miles for an average of 258 miles per trip.

An lastly, good luck and health in 2015 to all members and readers and especially the incoming Kosair Divan.

Roger Hines, Transportation Unit Secretary

What I am Thankful For- Pastor Rene´ Brown, Living Faith Christian Ministries, Louisville, Kentucky

Good morning my friends and God bless you...we have a lot to be thankful for..

These are the parts of me, myself and my life that are difficult to verbalize and articulate at times, but have shaped my being and my human experience far more than the lighter more pleasant and picturesque moments have. And for that in itself, I am thankful.

1. I am thankful for all the things I never wanted to experience. The things I cried out against, and the ones that have felt nothing but unfair. What I want is oftentimes not what I need in the first place, and it’s through these experiences, and not getting things my way, I’ve grown the most.

2. I am thankful I have come to understand the range of emotions a human being is capable of experiencing. From the lowest of lows all the way to the highest of highs.

3. I am thankful I have experienced the weight of loving someone too much, so I know my heart is capable of such a feat.

4. I am thankful I have watched people walk out of my life, for it has helped me to understand the importance of making the most of what is in front of me, while I have the chance.

5. I am thankful I have watched

the same people return, for it has helped me see that nothing is certain, nothing is for sure. Life moves in circles and unruly shapes and patterns—not a straightforward path. Nothing is linear and it never will be.

6. I am thankful I carry with me the pieces of a broken heart, recognizing these pieces are not only a part of who I am today, but are valuable pieces of the puzzle of the person I am continuing to become.

7. I am thankful I have watched those who I look up to most fall apart, for it has helped me understand that with age comes both experience and wisdom, but no one is immune to feelings. It’s shown me that I am not the only one who carries a human heart, and the weight of the world on my shoulders.

8. I am thankful I have let parts of my life mean so much to me that their absence has driven me to fall apart to the point of feeling paralyzed, and down for the count.

9. I am thankful I have gotten back up—that at each and every one of these paralyzing turning points there was something that was there to grab me by the hand and pull me forward. Not something that was given to me by, or found within, someone else, but rather something that I was forced to find deep within myself

and bring to the surface all on my own accord.

10. I am thankful that somewhere in my soul I have been able to maintain faith that that there is a power greater than me who hasn’t given up on me yet. It’s because of my faith the size of a mustard seed that I am able to continue on every day.
