R ck Booth, n na 's number one CIF'AAA" Division football champions tor 1969, was named Playerof the Year by members of All-Southern Cal1rornia Board of Ath

letics as annual selections were made at Helms Hall, Los Angeles. Booth, described by his coach Ray SolRri, the former TJniv. or California gridstar, as "the finest linebacker I have ever had since coaching here,"was the Rio Hondo League's "Lineman of the Year" •••unanimously.

In speaking of his star performer, Solari says, "Booth has agreat competitive instinct. His speed, quickness and toughness haveproduced same unbelievable defensi~e plays. As a wingback on offensehe has been an outstanding blocker, pass receiver and ball carrier. 1t

Rick led his South PasRdena Tigers over same rough competitorson their way to the elF tt.A.AA" Division grid crown. South Pasadena wonover La Puente (27-7), Fullerton (21-7), Lawndale (21-18) and Bonitain the finals ••• 10-O. In defeating the Bonita Bearcats 10-0 in thedivision finale, South Pas shut out a club that had been averaging over38 points per game in three playoff meetings. The Bearcats, in theirrunner-up role, smashed Northview (34-14), Glendora (36-14> and Foothill (46-20).

As might be expected South Pasadena led the way in placingperformers on the 1969 ftAAA" All-star teams. Fullback Mike Klof, whoscored over 20 touchdowns during the season, was a first-team backfield pick, along with tackle Paul Cole and MVP Booth. Halfback BobSchultz was a third-team selection.

Runner-up Bonita High placed three of its performers on thehonor teams ••• ace backfield men Charlie Schuhmann and Allen Carter, apair of fine halfbacks. Other schools to place three players wereCrestview League ch~plon Foothill and Camino Real co-champ Lasuen.Teams to place two selections are Rolling Hills, Garden Grove, TempleCity, and Neff.

For having been selected as the "AAAtt Division 1 s MVP for 1969 J

FOR RELEASE: WEDNESDAY PMs •• ~DEC.· 24TH· and Tllur·sdaya';m;~} .~ *DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO DEC. 24TH p.m.

~abUl0US~~~;-;~~hJ~ McLe~~Roosevelt High School Roughriders, was named Los Angeles CityFootball "Player of the Yearn for the 1969 season, as members

of the Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met at Helms Hall to make their annual all-star team selections.

Hudson, 6-toot, l75-pound wingman for the Eastern League champswhich went to the finals of the L.A. City playoff before losing toMarine Loop title holder Gardena (37-20), had a phenomenal year in1969. Double and triple-teamed all year long, the two-time all-citypick caught 48 passes for 1,159 yards and 12 touchdowns during theyear. He ran two punts back over 90 yards for TOs in the South Gategame and intercepted eight passes on defense.

Coach Jim McLean makes no secret of the fact that Hudson hasmeant everything to his team over the past two seasons. The Roughriders won the Eastern Loop crown last year as Gre~ Hudson was voteda co-Player of the Year. They got as far as the second round of theplayoffs in '68, beating Van Nuys, but losing to Manual Arts. Thisyear Roosevelt whipped Carson (48-22), San Fernando (22-12) and Reseda(26-24) before losing in the finals, 37-20, to Gardena. In each ofthe above listed ball games Hudson had fine ball games, save the lastone ••• when Gardena cut him off by surrounding him with defenders.

This marks the third year that All-Los Angeles City Board ofFootball has selected offensive and defensive units. In 1967 twoteams were picked on both offense and defense, while last year theboard began selecting three units for each.

Kickers were named to both first and second units in 1969 selections••• Gardena's Glenn Walker and Los Angeles' He~an Morales being the "toes" selected.

Along with Hudson, named to the second offensive unit in '68,three other -·ci ty players repeated. Bill Kramer of Poly again made thefirst defensive unit, while Rick Ho1oubek (Wilson) and Jim Fenwick(Cleveland), named to the 2nd defensive team this year were 3rd teamdefenders in '68.

As expected, Dick Enright's city champion Gardena Mohicans ranoff with individual honors in the 1969 all-star selections. Three players off the city champion club were named to both offensive and defensive units. Four additional Gardena stars were named to the secondand third-team units•

., The pride of the Marine League in 1969 was a devastating forceon the gridiron. Enright's Raiders wound up the season 11-1 and, butfor an opening game lose to Lakewood -- a team which came within aneyelash of beating "AAAA u ClF champion Blair in the Southern Cal semifinals, 24-19 -- ran roughshod over city league and playoff opponentsalike.

Gardena's playoff wins came against Belmont (40-12), Taft (34-6)Los Angeles (28-16) and Roosevelt in the finals (37-20).

For having coached Gardena to the city title, coach Dick Enright will be recipient of the coaches "Silver Tumbler" award. GregHUdson will receive the Helms medallion as MVP in city football for1969••••wi th both awards being made at the annual gridi, ron awards program to be held early in January•••• at a time yet to be determined.
