Hospital Car Service AppealOur village service has really been under strain this year with, it seems, hospitals trying to cut their appointment

waiting times down by sending patients to private clinics and working later and at weekends. We only have a few drivers who we can call on regularly, one being Bill Frost who did a lot of our driving but

unfortunately has had to have an eye operation and has been out of action for a while. We hope you are soon well Bill.We really miss you.

We have one other driver who is fantastic and has on many occasions dropped everything to take a client for usand three others who can go when work or commitments allow but on three occasions this year I have had to call oncounty transport services to help, which is not in our remit of a village community service.

I am appealing to any driver in our village who can spare any time to help us. Even as little as one trip a month wouldbe a great help as the more people I have to call on the less everyone else has to do. When I get a call I phone aroundall the drivers until I get someone who is free, so you have a choice, if you have the time and if it is somewhere you wantto go.

The only thing you have to have is a four door car and be fully comprehensive on your insurance. The amount youget from the clients and from us does not affect any benefits you receive. Our list of charges is at the end of this article.

Please take a little time to think about helping us, our village service is the envy of a lot of villages like ours who donot have a good bus service to our hospitals, doctors, clinics, towns etc. You do not know when you will need us yourselfand it could even help you to save petrol by nipping to a supermarket nearby while you wait for someone at a hospitalin town.

Please take a little time to read this and phone me, Tricia Hicks, on 212520

Termyn Gwari Fleghes

(children’s playtime, in Cornish)by Esther Richardson

September is a month when things start to change as autumn begins, thedays seem shorter and cooler. Plants, animals and birds do different thingsas they get ready for the colder weather that will be coming soon...andchildren have to go back to school! Some birds that are summer visitors, such as swifts, have already gone to Africa, swallows and house martinswill be leaving soon because there are not enough insects left for them toeat. We won’t see them again until next spring!

You may see birds and animals collecting seeds and berries, they are doingthis to get ready for winter – they will either eat the food now to get fat likehedgehogs do or they will save it like squirrels do, to eat when it gets cold.

People collect seeds and berries too... we like to eat them as well. I haveseen some of you picking blackberries already, they are fun to pick, just becareful of prickles. The blackberries can be used to make crumbles, pies, jam or be frozen to use in winter. Free food is good!!! One important thingto remember is you must not eat berries until an adult has told you they aresafe. Some berries are poisonous and can make you very ill. In Autumnmushrooms and toadstools (fungi) also appear in fields and gardens, someare very pretty colours and shapes but they can be poisonous too, so thesame rule applies – don’t touch them unless an adult says they areedible(safe to eat). Take a photo instead if you want to identify what youhave found.

Other people who are busy collecting food are farmers- perhaps while youhave been on holiday you have seen tractors, trailers, combines all busyin the fields or driving along the roads. The farmers are saving food forwinter too, for their farm animals –hay, silage, barley, wheat, oats, straw, and also for us- wheat, potatoes, carrots, fruit and vegetables.

There is a Harvest colouring competition this month, remember to sendyour entry in- see how many different foods you can find in the picture J

Delabole School Leavers

DELABOLE COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Class 4 discovered life after SATS by taking part in Drama Workshops. One afternoon per week Harry, their tutor, hasbeen leading the children in discussion and role play to develop the story of ‘The Iron Woman’.During the last week of term the children performed the final rehearsal of their play at Clease Hall to an audience fromTintagel and Otterham schools. That evening, parents, carers and governors were invited to the performance. It wasboth enjoyable and entertaining: the children were confident in their roles and supportive of each other. This wasespecially commendable as several pupils were unable to attend, leaving others to understudy at short notice.

Parents, carers and governors were invited to join the school for the annual Celebration and Leavers’ Service held onthe last morning of term. The school and the audience were gathered inthe school field, in bright sunshine, and applauded as the leavers arrived. These children started the assembly by individually recounting a memorable event from their school life. These rangedfrom indelible experiences in Reception to amusing incidents at their recent camp. They then sang ‘We’ll meet again’ to much applause.Pupils who had achieved 100% attendance this year were presented with a cup by Mrs Molloy, Chair of Governors. Those who had only missed up to 5 sessions were presented with a certificate.A new initiative this time was to present a cup to the one child from each year group who had made the most progressduring the year. The leavers then received dictionaries and files containing pieces of work from each year they had been in school. Whata memento that will be!It was now the turn of the leavers to make presentations: every member of the school staff was given a bunch ofhand-made anemones. The school had to say farewell to Miss Webster who leaves to take another post and a presentation was made to herby Mrs Gidzewicz.A bouquet of flowers was given to Mrs Walker to mark the start of her maternity leave.Following the assembly the leavers were joined by their parents and carers for lunch in the school hall.At the end of the day the whole school community formed an arch across the playground and cheered and applaudedas the leavers passed through. We all hope that they have left our school with very happy memories. We wish themwell.

Where are they now?

My name is Leon Sandercock (Sandy) formerly of 2Penmead Road in Delabole.

I recently had a stroke and lost a lot of my memory andas a result of it all, I trashed my computer when I fell.Fortunately with the aid of an all singing and all dancingnew machine, most of my memory (what little I did have)has returned and I've struck a hurdle that I can't resolve.I've contacted Chris Hore and he suggested I enter a'dit' on your publication. (Where are they now??) Itwould appear they have proved successful in the past.I'm trying to trace a Desmond Cleave who also lived inPengelly and married a girl called Sandra Baker. Theymoved to Plymouth and I still have a photo of them witha baby girl (taken at Crackington Haven) and I seem torecall the little girl could have been called Donna. They moved to Plymouth and all I have been able todetermine is that they live in Leigham, Plymouth (I haveno house number or telephone number) and a partialpost code of PL6.

Des and I played guitars back in those days and I recallwe had our photos taken by David Stacey after we wona talent competition at Teignmouth. I still have the photo. Our respective mums were adamant that we shouldwear bow-ties!!! (Uggggh)I still have contact with David (M) Stacey and he wasn'table to help out either. Are you in a position to give a helping hand in the hopethat we can get back in touch? It may transpire that hehas been trying to contact me, but alas I have movedtwice since we last spoke. I'm also mindful that we mustassume he is still on the planet!I fully appreciate that this is a shot in the dark. So inadvance of any (if any) development, may I thank yousincerely and keep up the good work, albeit I've lived inYorkshire for 40+ years now I still read The Slate.Once again, many thanks

As a retired Police officer I'm fully mindful of the DataProtection Act (circa 1988) so as a way around it, mytelephone number is 01904 670880 (Ex D) and you willon receipt of this, have my E-mail address, that way weare all squeaky clean.

Delabole RemembersA Commemoration of the First World War

Many residents gathered atthe War Memorial Garden onMonday 4th August at 11amto remember all those fromour community who werecaught up in the courageous,

but tragic events, of the First World War.The service was led by Rev Peter Dixon and Rev Bryan Edewhilst Mr David Jasper played The Last Post and Reveille. On entering the Garden, all were given a sprig of rosemaryto place in pots at the foot of the memorial during the service.Mr Phil Carnon, Chairman of the Delabole Branch of the RoyalBritish Legion, read all the names of the fallen listed on thememorial and added personal details of each. He then laidthe wreath of poppies. A young member of the community,Bethany Chapman, read the Old Testament reading. At the end of the service, Delabole President, Mr GeoffCleave, unveiled a Delabole Slate Plaque, kindly donated byMr and Mrs. Hamilton, to mark the Commemoration.A buffet lunch followed at the Methodist Church, during whicha commemorative cake was cut by Mrs Val Callaway, who formany years had been our Poppy organiser. The cake, bakedand iced by Mrs Brenda Burnard, was made from a hundredyear old recipe given to her for the village memorabiliacollection. It was delicious!!Following the lunch, there was the opportunity for all to lookat Brenda’s photos and memorabilia displays of WWl and alsothe displays of flowers in the Chapel from the previous weekend’s Flower Festival.

Dan Rogerson MP – Delabole Slate (September edition) – 7th August 2014.

I have been contacted by several people who are concerned about the reliability of bus services from Delabole toCamelford and Wadebridge, as well as about recent changes and cuts to bus services in our area. I been raising localpeople’s concerns about local bus services with Western Greyhound and Cornwall Council.

I am determined to explore all possible options to try and protect and improve bus services. In July the Governmentannounced a £48.9 million ‘Growth Deal’ investment for Cornwall. As part of the package, there will be a review of theexisting Cornish bus network to identify and progress improvements. It is right that public transport improvements are apart of this economic growth strategy - North Cornwall is already poorly served by bus routes and we don’t have accessto local rail services either, which is why I will be working to make sure that we seize the opportunity of a new ‘Bus andIntegrated Transport Strategy’ for Cornwall to try to protect, improve and expand the bus network in north Cornwall.

As well as looking to improve public transport, this multi million pound growth deal will also help to sustain and createjobs, support local small and medium sized businesses, and attract new companies and investment to our area. Crucially, instead of money being spent by governments in London or by a distant and unresponsive ‘South West’ regionaldevelopment agency, the power and decisions about spending will now be taken locally, so we can choose how best tobuild a stronger Cornish economy.

The Government has also awarded £4.3 million to help fix potholes across Cornwall. One of the most common complaintsI hear as local MP is the state of some of our roads, so I am pleased that the Government has responded and is offeringthis much-needed funding to invest in our roads. Of course money will not be the solution to all of the problems acrossthe Duchy, but if you are having problems with specific potholes on your street or in your area, please do let me knowand I will try and get any problems fixed.

People often contact me with problems about the out-of-hours doctors service currently run by Serco. The service hasbeen controversial since the last Labour government handed it to a private company. I was pleased to hear that NHSchiefs, under new powers given to them by the Coalition Government, have decided against simply giving a new companycontrol of out-of-hours services when Serco’s contract ends on 31st May 2015.

NHS Kernow’s decision to take 12 months to re-design the service is a very welcome one, and is an opportunity for usto make sure that we get the new out of hours service right. Residents in rural communities across north Cornwall, musthave the same access to a decent out-of-hours doctors service as everyone else.  If you have any comments orsuggestions about how the out of hours GP service could be improved, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Every summer I spend the time visiting villages and parishes in the North Cornwall constituency to knock on doors. Mysummer door knocking tour aims to give as many local people as possible a chance to speak to me in person about anylocal or national issues, problems or concerns. It’s a vital part of my work to keep in touch with local people all yearround, so that I can campaign on the issues that matter when I speak up for us in Westminster.

I am looking forward to coming to Delabole soon, but if I don’t catch you in or if there’s anything I can help with then youcan always contact me by e-mail, letter, telephone or arrange a time for us to meet using the details below.

Do You Remember Phil Silvers? It was on September 20th 1955 that the very first episode of ‘The Phil Silvers Show’, was broadcast on CBC Televisionin America . Originally the title of the show was ‘You’ll Never Get Rich’ but soon it was renamed 'The Phil Silvers Show’.It is now 59 years since that day when Phil Silvers burst on to our television screens in America and Great Britain , tobecome Sergeant Bilko. The First programme was a Pilot Show called ‘Audition Show’. There were 142 episodes in four series before theprogrammes demise. After the Show finished on June 17th 1959, (my birthday!) it has become a cult series like DadsArmy is today. The series was shown weekly on BBC Television during its original run from 1955, and was a staple of BBC One'spost-11pm late-night schedule throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, appearing up to several times per week immediatelyprior to the channel's signoff. This was before BBC1 became a 24-hour broadcaster in November 1997. In 1987, theseries moved to BBC Two, where it often held a late-night slot, as well as runs during the daytime programs and evenoccasionally in an early evening slot. The programme finally disappeared from British television screens in October 2004after nearly 50 years. The popularity of the programme was underlined when the UK publication Radio Times Guide to Comedy ranked ThePhil Silvers Show as its top TV Sitcom. I have the complete series of The Phil Silvers Show and rate it as my favouritetelevision series of all time. The writing was superb and the cast seemed made for the programme.Phil Silvers was the great but slightly flawed gambler, Sergeant Bilko !. His right-hand men were Cpl. Rocco Barbella(Harvey Lembeck) and Cpl. Steve Henshaw (Allan Melvin), and his long-suffering superior was Col. John T. Hall (PaulFord). The large supporting cast included Herbie Faye (a former burlesque crony of Silvers') as Pvt. Sam Fender, MauriceGosfield as the slovenly Pvt. Duane Doberman, Joe E. Ross as the camp cook Sgt. Rupert Ritzik, Beatrice Pons asloud-mouthed Mrs. Ritzik, Billy Sands as Pvt. Dino Paparelli, Jimmy Little as Sgt. Francis Grover, and Mickey Freemanasdiminutive Pvt. Fielding Zimmerman. Some episodes gave Bilko a romantic interest with Elisabeth Fraser as Sgt. JoanHogan. In the series finale, "Weekend Colonel", Bilko discovers a short-order cook who is the exact double of Colonel Hall. Bilkohires the cook to impersonate the colonel, so he can cheat the other officers in a bogus charity effort. The real ColonelHall learns of the scam, and Bilko, Henshaw, and Barbella end up being locked away in the guardhouse. As ColonelHall looks at his prisoners on a newly installed closed-circuit TV system, he quips: "It's a wonderful show, and as longas I'm the sponsor, it will never be cancelled." The camera cuts to Bilko and his henchmen finally behind bars. Bilkowaves to the camera and says, "Th-th-that's all, folks!" So ended the series. If you have never watched it, in my opinion, you have missed the best Sit Com ever on television!.The Regal Man

William Hewett - Soldier (Snake Charmer)

William Hewett, my great uncle, was born in St. Kew, Cornwall. His parents wereRichard and Elizabeth Hewett. Elizabeth was a Broad. He joined the Army earlyin life, indeed he spent all his army life with the 79th Cameron Highlanders, hewas assigned to Egypt under the command of General Graham Wolesoley. On11th July 1882 he saw the fleet bombard Alexandria and a little later his regimentwas ordered to suppress a military revolt against the Kedive. Aribi Pasha hadraised 38,000 Egyptians to his standard. The British met the enemy at Telel-Keiber and completely routed them. It was generally anticipated that the Britishtroops would attack by day, but Sir Garnet Wolsey issued orders to attack duringthe night of September 12th / 13th, 1882. The surprise of the enemy can wellbe imagined when the battle was fought and won in twenty four minutes. Mr.Hewett came through. He spent some time in Cairo and Port Said and variousother places in the Sudan and returned to England in 1886 when he left theservice.Snake CharmerFrom early youth Bill Hewett held in his possession a charm taught to him byhis grandmother. Mr. Hewett stated it could be found in the Bible but no one hasyet been able to find it. He claimed that he could pick up any reptile on earth nomatter how venomous it might be. Many persons could testify to him taking upvipers and placing them around his bared neck. He handled them as carelesslyas an ordinary person would do with a piece of string. One interesting thing heused to state was that a viper always turns half right to strike. Mr. Hewett spentfive and a half years in America at Pen Argyle, Northampton County,

Pennsylvania and was engaged in the slate quarries there. While there he claimed to have charmed the deadly AmericanRattlesnake - one particular specimen which he handled had sixteen rattles on its tail. He could also charm worts andcalm down animals of any kind. He lived at a little place called Drym in a farm cottage near the village of Nancegollan, between Helston and Camborne where he ended his days. Unfortunately I never knew my great uncle and can only relyon the information written down by others but have this photograph of him holding a snake in his hand outside the cottagewhere he lived.

Stories from Cedarcroft Plants………

Autumn slips into view, and while writing this the sun shines hot. We have had a lovely sunny summer so hopefullywe will be able to embrace the autumn and winter. At Cedarcroft we welcome Fern (what a great name for ahorticulturalist!) a final year student at Duchy College who will be developing our growing and propagating, lookout for some new and interesting plants this year!

Jobs for the month:Continue to feed and dead-head your hanging baskets and container plants - they will often keep going until thefirst frosts. Try autumn-sowing hardy annuals for bigger plants next year. Start to divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools. Plant hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs for forcing, to ensure a crowd of colourful blooms at Christmas. Perfect for ahome made Christmas present! Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths now. Plant out any biennial plants sown earlier in the year, or if you didn't have time you can buy plants now. Thisincludes foxgloves, wallflowers and violas. September is a good time to plant new perennials as the soil is still warm but there is generally more rainfall. With wetter weather arriving this month, it's the ideal time to order trees and shrubs. They will grow vigorouslynext spring if planted this autumn. Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance. Keep dead-heading your Penstemons, Dahlias and Roses to prolong flowering. Prune any late-summer flowering shrubs such as the rock rose (Helianthemum). Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowering, inwhich case leave them).Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year's buds developwell.

The Creative Activity:While you can't take cuttings from rhododendrons, there is a much simpler technique you can try - layering. Do itin September and by the following spring you'll have the beginnings of many new rhododendron plants. Select asuitably low-growing and pliable young branch that will bend down to soil level. Remove any side-shoots but keepthe cluster of leaves at the end of the stem. About 15cm from the shoot tip, make a nick using a sharp knife on theunderside of the branch - aim to cut just halfway through the stem. Dust the area with hormone rooting powder.Dig a shallow hole at the point where the stem touches the ground and peg it down firmly to stop it springing up.Cover the stem at this point with compost. Weight the buried shoot down with a heavy stone and water regularlyto keep the area moist. By early spring the layer wilL be fully rooted. Cut if off from the parent plant and replant.

Hints and tips:When it comes to sowing seeds gardening lore has many variations about how thickly to sow , but they add up tothe same advice. Plant your seeds in a row ,One for the pheasant ,one for the crow, One to rot and one to grow.Or Sow seeds generously One for the rook ,one for the crow, One to die and one to grow. In short plant on thegenerous side. Between predators and natural failure they are not all going to germinate satisfactorily. The commonfoxglove is often the first supposed weed to go on the bonfire when a new garden is being made or an old one isbeing cleared up. Just think before you do this! It stimulates the growth of plants around it and helps keep diseaseat bay. Rhododendrons and azaleas are said to paticularly thrive when foxgloves are grown among them, andthere is evidence to support this.

Loneliness and Befrienders

After my article in the July ‘Slate’, I have had a couple ofenquiries from people who are on their own and wouldlove someone to visit them.

I know that from my previous article that some people hadconcerns that anyone doing this had to be CRB checkedbefore they could go into anyone’s house. Well I now haveone lady who is a carer and has three checks from variousjobs she does and has said that she would like to spenda couple of hours a week visiting people . She thinks it isimportant for our housebound to have contact with afriendly face.

As we now have one person prepared to visit this got methinking about how others could help and I am sure that Icould get funding for anyone interested to be CRB checkedso that we could have a proper village befrienders’ group.

As I have said before, I think our village is a marvellouscaring community and a fantastic place to live and I thinkit would be wonderful to be one of the first villages to haveour own befriending service.

Should you think that you would like to spend a couple ofhours a week visiting our lonely housebound pleasecontact me on 212520 to find out more. I will arrange forthe checks and, if we have four or five people interested, any training that could help us.

This service would be to sit and chat with the houseboundand would not be to do household chores, shopping etc.as this would defeat the object of giving an hour of our timeto someone just talking and listening.

Are you lonely? Would you like to use a village befrienders’service? Would you like to know more? Please phone mein confidence at the above phone number and I candiscuss any worries with you.

A Reader writesIt’s an ideal wash day, the pegged washing is blowing on the line, as the gentle wind tugs and the warmth of the sundries it to perfection.Later, unpegged and neatly folded, the items are returned either to where they belong, ready to be used once more, orplaced on the ironing pile.Laundry! At times, the chores of washing, drying and ironing seem tedious, even with the advantages of technology

Have you ever thought that we can be a bit like God’s laundry?Does he find our cleansing a chore? I hope not.

In life, many are the times when the things we do or say blemish or stain us, occasions when we know we have hurtothers, or God, by what we’ve said or done, making us grubby.

God’s way of cleansing us is unique. His wash day is about turning away from doing wrong saying sorry to him, and turning to his ways; for God promises towash us clean and forgive us, not just once, but on every “wash day”, every time we bring our dirty washing to him.

The gentle wind, like the wind of the Holy Spirit which Jesus sent to his friends, reminds us that by his Spirit, he is withus, wherever we are. When we are as God wants us to be, he places us in his world, to love one another as Jesus lovesus.

What about being ironed? That could be painful!Perhaps it is God’s way of preparing us for a greater task, one requiring a special touch, one known only to him.

May all your washdays be special days with God!

Flower Festival 2014It seems a long time ago since the first three days ofAugust but that was when the Methodist Church becamefilled with the vibrant colours of imaginatively arrangedflowers depicting the Flower Festival’s theme ‘MyFavourite Things’.

Officially proceedings began on Friday morning with anopening ceremony conducted by Rev Bryan when wewere reminded of the reason for the Festival - thegrounding of the occasion in the Cornish Hospiceorganisation.

It was a brilliant extended week-end (actually withpreparation and tidying, it lasted a week). I think somepeople might as well have taken their bed there from theamount of time they generously gave to the project.

On entering the front porch, you were greeted not only by a blaze of colours and smellsbut also a board of photos of the usual suspects demonstrating some of their ‘FavouriteThings’ - including this offering of an exceptionally tidy tablecloth cupboard by WendyTrewin - she even knows if someone’s tried to sneak in a folded cloth when her backis turned! I’m inviting her round to sort my airing cupboard.

Over thirty local organisations plusmembers of the congregationgenerously shared their time and talentsto make the Festival an occasion toremember and raise funds of £797 forCornish Hospices. Gwen Bray, who satin the chapel for practically all of thethree days, raised a staggering £64 withher buttonholes and a delightful timewas had by one and all.

Mrs. Sue Ede had put a lot of thoughtand preparation into Sunday morning’sworship with PowerPoints, video clipsand meaningful illustrations. We all came away with lots to think aboutand a smile on our faces. This happened again at Sunday evening’s Songs of Praise - led by thatwell known double act Rev Bryan and Rev Peter Dixon. It was a good jobwe’d had the roof repaired, as the singing plus the accompaniment ofMaria Nicholls and Stuart Biddick on organ and piano did its best to raiseit.

An added feature was Brenda Burnard’s thought provoking WWl display of photographs and memorabilia, which remainedon view for the Royal British Legion’s buffet on Monday. You’ll find more about that in another section of ‘The Slate’.

Thanks to all who worked so hard and supported the Festival. Well done Delabole.Helen Hicks
