Hello RAHS Families- September 19, 2016 I’d like to start by thanking all spectators at Friday’s home football game. Despite an hour-long lightning strike delay, all spectators remained calm, courteous, and most importantly – safe. I’d also like to thank the school staff members in attendance and police officers for your oversight and teamwork. This year we’ve made the decision to eliminate paper planner books because the cost was becoming prohibitive and we are transitioning into electronic planners on school issued iPads. As the 11 th and 12 th grade students are without iPads, we will be ordering a more inexpensive version of a planner which can be printed in-house. Students in need are requested to stop by the SSS office to request a paper planner. Here are some tips from our Media/Tech staff on electronic planner use: Electronic Student Planner Options If your student is looking for a way to stay organized, it is helpful if they use a planner to keep track of assignments, quizzes, and activities. For students who have been assigned iPads, we recommend the use of an app called Wunderlist in conjunction with the existing iPad calendar. This app can be downloaded to the student's iPad through the Self-Service school app store. For students who have personal devices, including android devices, Wunderlist can be used in conjunction with Google Calendar. In Wunderlist, students can set up reminders, due dates, and organize their tasks into folders which can all sync with their device's calendar to alert them to upcoming quizzes, homework, and help them pace through projects. ACADEMICS

Congratulations to seniors Heather Knutson and Charles Park for being selected as semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Smart!

Led by teachers Amy Dahlin and Addison Engelking, this summer’s Quantum program brought together 29 RAHS students during a two week period in August to focus on preparing for success in AP and CIS courses. Student reflections about the course were: “Quantum was an ideal classroom situation and makes me more optimistic about returning to school.” “My motivation was definitely changed! This was the perfect time to help boost my confidence and preparation for the next year.” “It made me see where I am good academically and what I struggle with. It also helped me realize the importance of different perspectives.”

Students who’ve completed or are currently enrolled in level 3 or higher Spanish language classes are invited to embark on an unforgettable study abroad experience in Puerto Rico during spring break in March. Students will stay with host families, participate in Spanish classes, visit cultural attractions, and explore the natural beauty of the country. Applications are due on October 1. Contact teacher David Brooks at [email protected] with questions or for more information.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE - Ann DePaolis-Jones

The school year is off to a great start. Please review the following information from the health office to help insure a safe and healthy environment for all at RAHS.

Immunizations: All students must show documentation of being fully immunized or file a legal exemption with the school. Please check your student’s immunizations in Synergy to see if they are up to date for school. If you need information about obtaining a legal exemption, you can contact the health office at 651-604-1474.

Student Medications: If your student needs medication at school, please complete a medication authorization form and bring the completed form with the medication in the appropriately labeled container to the health office. Authorization forms are available in the health office, or on the Roseville Area Schools web site: http://www.isd623.org/sites/isd623.org/files/SSHSDispenseMeds.pdf Students are not allowed to have any medications in their backpacks unless they have been approved by the school nurse.

Absences: As we head into flu season, we expect to see an increase in the number of students with influenza like illness (ILI). ILI is defined as a fever over 100 degrees along with a cough and/or sore throat. Parents should keep students home from school if they are sick with ILI. Please help us track the number of students with ILI by calling the school each day your student is home ill and reporting the specific symptoms they are experiencing. Call the RAHS attendance office at 651-604-1465 to report your student’s absence on the 24-hour recorded line.

To help you decide when to keep your student home from school use this link – http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/school/parentscreen.pdf

Illness at School: If your student becomes ill at school, they should go to the health office where they can contact a parent or guardian. With parent/guardian approval, your student will be given a pass to leave the building. Phone calls or texts should not be made to parents/guardians from the classroom.

Latex Precautions in School: Latex balloons can be dangerous for our students and staff with latex allergies. If a balloon pops, small particles can become airborne. If these are inhaled by an allergic person it can be life-threatening. Please remember: No latex balloons in the building. Mylar balloons are a safe alternative.

11 Tips to Get the Most from Freshman Year

 1. Every year counts. Every day of high school counts, students that tank their freshmen year

will be kicking themselves when senior year rolls around and they can do nothing to fix their

GPA. Get started right!

2. Participate. Sharing ideas is helpful to other students, helps you understand course content

better, and contributes to class discussion; but it also prepares you for the workforce.

Communication is an important part of any job and it is a great skill to learn early.

3. Join School Groups. Whether it’s sports, clubs, or musical ensembles, finding groups to

participate in is extremely important. It rounds out future college applications–yes–but it also

helps you find new friends, keeps you occupied, and makes school a lot more fun.

4. Know what resources are available to you. High schools are bustling with resources for help

and support. For example: many schools have counselors appointed to each student who can

help with anything from scheduling issues to problems at home.
