All aboard the new MyCiTi service! The City of Cape Town urges all Capetonians to hop on board the MyCiTi bus this holiday season.

“MyCiTi is safe, smart and affordable –a service to be proud of,” says Marvin the MyCiTi mascot. “We look forward to seeing you on board!”

Catch the bus to the airport, the Waterfront, the Green Point Urban Park, which is close to Stadium Station, trendy Long Street, and even Milnerton or Blouberg beach. You can take a surfboard or bicycle on board.

Starting on 1 December, MyCiTi operates one hour later on Saturdays, Sundays and public holi-days. The last departure from the Civic Station is 11pm. On New Year’s Eve, the last departure from the Waterfront is at 1am.

The following services are now operational:

· The Airport and Civic Centre

· Table View, Blouberg and Parklands

· Gardens, via the entertainment hubs of Loop and Long Streets

Before travelling, passengers must get a myconnect card for R23 and load it with value. The amount of R23 is refundable from any MyCiTi station kiosk should you not wish to use the service again - simply hand in the card and receipt.

A trip on a residential route, in Table View or in the CBD, costs R5,30, and a trip on the main route between Civic Centre station and Table View costs R10,60. The shorter, R5,30 trips are free when travelled in conjunction with the main route.

“Wait for a bus at one of the MyCiTi bus stops, and don’t forget to put our your hand to hail down the bus,” says Marvin.

· For more information, log on to www.capetown.gov.za/myciti or phone the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65-64-63.

KIRSTENBOSCH CELEBRATES A 100 YEARSKIRSTENBOSCH 100 YEARS In May 1913, the Government of the day set aside the estate of Kirstenbosch for the establishment of a National Botanical Garden at Kirstenbosch. The Garden was to be controlled by a Board of five Trustees, three appointed by the Government, one by the Municipality of Cape Town and one by the Botanical Society.

The Board held its first meeting on 16 June 1913, and appointed Prof. H.H.W. Pearson as Honorary Director (with no salary) and J.W. Mathews as Cu-rator. A Secretary, a Ranger and a Gardener were also appointed. On 1 July 1913, the Kirstenbosch estate was handed over to the Board of Trustees and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was born. This was achieved after years of skilful and persis-tent campaigning by Pearson, in competition with the Department of Agriculture’s plans for a national botanical survey and national herbarium in Pretoria. Pearson’s vision for the new botanical garden was the study and preservation of the country’s indig-enous flora, something no other botanical garden had ever done.

Pearson and Mathews were confronted with a neglected, overgrown farm, a ruined homestead, hordes of pigs, thickets of weeds and extensive plantations of alien plants. The property had been used for timber by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) since 1657 and belonged to the Company until the first British Occupation of the Cape in 1795.

It was privately owned from 1811, farmed from 1823 until 1895, when it was purchased by Cecil John Rhodes who allowed the land to become neglected and the homestead was left empty and fell into ruin. On his death in 1902, the land was bequeathed to the Government, and the Forestry Department planted the estate with Pines and Eucalypts.

Much of the early work involved clearing the

weeds and constructing paths and stormwater drains, but attention also had to be given to the prevention of fire, theft and poaching. In the first year, the nursery site had been selected (beside the Bath Stream in the Dell), terraced and a workshed erected, and the main lawn had been cleared and planted with grass.

In the first ten to fifteen years many of the principle features of the garden were established: hundreds of cycads were planted in the Cycad Amphitheatre, the rock work along the Bath stream and stone work in the Dell and the Cycad Amphitheatre was completed, Colonel Bird’s Bath was restored, the Main Pond was excavated, Mathews Rockery and the Koppie were laid out, the Protea Garden, Erica Garden and Arboretum were begun, and the living plant collections were being built up.

Right from the beginning, the development of the garden has followed the natural, flowing landscape, rather than imposing itself upon it with rigid, geo-metric lines, and the natural stone has been used for the paths, rockeries and walls. It is thanks to Pearson’s foresight, determination and skill that we have a botanical garden at Kirsten-bosch. The passion, hard work and dedication of the staff, and the support of the Botanical Society and its members over the past 100 years have made Kirstenbosch what it is today. Website: www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch. Tel: 021 799 8783. NBG, NBI, SANBI A new institution was also established on 1 July 1913, the National Botanic Gardens of South Africa (NBG). The aim of this institution was to create a national network of botanic gardens throughout South Africa, at least one garden in each ecological region of the country, and to focus on its indig-enous flora.

The second director of the NBG, R.H. Compton, established the first regional garden, the Karoo

NBG, in 1921. The third director, H.B. Rycroft added five gardens: Harold Porter NBG in 1959, the Free State NBG in 1967, the Lowveld NBG and the transfer of the Natal Botanic Garden to the NBG in 1969, and the Witwatersrand NBG in 1982 (renamed the Walter Sisulu NBG in 2004).

The NBG was amalgamated with the Botanical Research Institute (BRI) to become the National Botanical Institute (NBI) in 1989. The Pretoria NBG came into the NBI with the merge.

In 2004, the NBI became the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The ninth garden, the Hantam NBG, was added in 2007 and the tenth, in the Eastern Cape, is on the horizon. Website: www.sanbi.org. Head Office: Tel 012 843 5000. Email: [email protected] THE BOTANICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA There would be no Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden without the Botanical Society of South Africa. The land for the Garden was granted on condition that the organisation be formed to support the develop-ment of the National Botanical Garden. The Society was formed on 10 June 1913 and held its first general meeting on 31 July 1913.

Its original aims were to encourage the public’s involvement in the development of Kirstenbosch, to augment the Government grants, to organise botanical shows, and to enlighten and instruct members on botanical subjects.

These aims are virtually unchanged today, and the Botanical Society has grown with the old NBG and now SANBI to extend its support to the eight other National Botanical Gardens as well as Kirsten-bosch. CAPE MINSTREL CARNIVAL

2 JanuaryWhile new year always arrives with a big bang in the Mother City, it’s the Cape Minstrel Carnival, known as TweedeNuweJaar (second new year), that gives the celebration its local colour. The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town’s longest-running street party, tracing back to old slave traditions dur-ing the days of the Cape Colony. Historically cel-ebrated on January 2, the one day Cape slaves were given off every year, the carnival is still marked to-day, typically on January 1, by merrymaking, music and a parade: Performers from local communities, dressed as minstrels and waving parasols, dance and sing their way from Zonnebloem, formerly District Six, through the city centre.

Over the following four years, the event attracted scores more top international artists to the Cape shores, to the point where artists from over thirty countries have attended.

In 2013, Southern Ink Xposure will again bring the best in global tattoo culture and lifestyle. NEW-LOOK STELLENBOSCH WINE FESTIVAL SET FOR JANUARY KICK-OFF

25 January to 3 February 2013

The Stellenbosch Wine Festival, the flagship event of South Africa’s iconic wine region, stomps its way into a new era this January with an expanded ten-day program designed to showcase in a bigger, better and bolder fashion the delightfully diverse town of Stellenbosch from 25 January until 3 Feb-ruary 2013. The Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes moved this annual highlight event from its previous mid-winter schedule to the new dates in order to capitalise on the unique assets and attractions this historic oak-lined town and its more than 150 wineries has to offer during the height of summer. The new date also celebrates the birth of South African wine, thanks to this entry on 2 Febru-ary 1659 in the diary of Jan van Riebeeck, official of the Dutch East India Company and First Com-mander of the Cape: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.”“We realised that it makes sense to showcase our world-class wines during a period when everything that Stellenbosch offers - its natural beauty, unique cultural heritage, excellent academic institutions and vibrant agricultural industries - is at its best and brightest. Perfect summer weather, the buzz of a new University year and the bustling start of the harvest season will all add new dimensions to the

L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate race is one of South Africa’s premier horse races over 1600m and a weight-for-age contest in line with the world’s most prestigious Grade 1 events. The event features a further nine races on the day. This historic horse race was first held in 1861 in honour of Queen Victoria. When she died the race became the King’s Plate during the reigns of Edward VII and George VI but reverted to its original name in 1953 after the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate on January 8th 2011 will be the 150th running of this race, which makes it the oldest race in the South African racing calendar.

Featuring the sensational partnership of Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov at two perfor-mances only, we bring you a perennial favourite for the festive season, in a traditional version of the fairytale ballet, The Nutcracker, which brings to life the story of Clara, Fritz, and their eccentric uncle, Drosselmeyer.

Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov, stars of the English National Ballet, will alternate perfor-mances with CTCB’s Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne, while Kirstel Jensen makes her debut in the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, partnered by new company Principal, Trevor Schoonraad.

The Nutcracker will be accompanied by The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances. The traditional fairytale version of The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara at her family's Christmas Eve party. Her mysterious uncle, Drosselmeyer, gives her a Nutcracker doll, starting a night of mys-teries and magic as the Nutcracker Prince comes to life to defeat the evil Rat King and his army. Clara travels through a magical snowstorm to celebrate their victory on an enchanted island, where she is transformed into the Sugar Plum Fairy. Celebra-tory dances from all over the world are performed, culminating in the grand pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince.

COPPELIA ARTSCAPE Theatre, 4 – 12 January, 2013

Based on the well-known story by ETA Hoffman, this is light-hearted ballet at its best. The ballet incorporates romance, intrigue and deception, transporting audiences to a world of fairytale magic and happy endings.

A mysterious inventor, Doctor Coppélius, has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, is infatuated with it, and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanilda, who, in Act II, shows him his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life.

Coppelia is the ideal entertainment for the whole family.

Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne feature in the lead roles of Franz and Swanilda, alternating the roles with Elizabeth Nienaber and Celeste George as Swanilda and Ivan Boonzaaier and Alexander Vivian-Riding as Franz. The production is by Robin Van Wyk and is danced to the enchanting music of Leo Delibes.

The majority of the seals on Duiker Island, out of Hout Bay Harbour, are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber.

BIG 5 SAFARIThe phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.

African Big Five Game Species:African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana): The African elephant is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears.

There are two distinct species of African elephant: Afri-can forest elephant (Loxodontacyclotis) and the African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana). Black rhinoceros (Dicerosbicornis):The black rhinoceros is a large, thick-skinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Rhinoceros may refer to either black or white rhinoceros.

African cape buffalo (Synceruscaffer): The African or cape buffalo is a large horned bovid. Buffalo are some-times reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal, although the same claim is also made of hippos and crocodiles. It is considered the most danger-ous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers.

Lion (Pantheraleo): The lion is a large carnivorous feline of Africa and northwest India, having a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. A lion may attack without provocation, and is considered by many to be the best of the Big Five.

Lions habituate the savanna where tall grasses, shrubs and bushes obscure and provide them cover and camou-flage. This thick undergrowth is commonly referred to as jess. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural

OSTRICH FARMINGHistory reveals that ostrich chicks were traded by the original Khoi inhabitants with the Dutch Settlers in 1652 and exported from Cape Town to Batavia (now Indonesia) in 1656. There were also exports to India and the Emperor of Japan in 1658. The first documented ostrich farm was established in the centre of Cape Town in 1679.

The ostrich is the world’s largest living bird, averaging 2m (6.5ft) in height and weighing up to 156kg (344lb).

SHARK CAGE DIVING Great white sharks are the apex predators of our oceans and Cape Town is one of the shark cage diving capitals of the world. Sharks are iconic and magnificent creatures. Experience a great white shark up close and personal with a shark diving or shark viewing tour (you don’t have to get in the cage!) and you do not need a scuba diving certificate to shark cage dive.

Great White Shark, Cage Diving takes place from April to September in False Bay (departs from Simon’s Town) and all year round from Gansbaai (2 hours from Cape Town).

CAPE FUR SEAL Situated only 8 nautical miles (about 16km) from Simon’s Town, Seal Island is home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting.

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations. The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born.

cover to stalk close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey. Lions do not generally avoid confrontation, but will usually face the challenger. Lions are unpredictable and may charge when sufficiently annoyed or confronted by danger.

Leopard (Pantherapardus): The leopard is a large, carnivorous feline having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. They are wary of humans and will take flight in the face of danger. The leopard is solitary by nature, and is most active between sunset and sunrise, although it may hunt during the day in some areas. Leopards can be found in the savanna grasslands, brush land and forested areas in Africa. The male leopard is less than half the size of a male lion. The leopard is the smallest of the big cats, and rarely exceeds 200 lb (91 kg).

A visit to a South African reserve will, most likely, allow seeing not only the big 5 but other habitants of the African bush. Although the stock will be different be-tween various reserves you’ll be able to watch: Giraffes, Elands, Springbok, Hippopotamus and Zebras.

CAPE PENINSULA BABOONSThe Baboon Matters Trust comprises a handful of dedi-cated volunteers who are at the forefront of baboon con-servation in South Africa. The goals of the trust include raising awareness for the plight of baboons as well as education and training so that sustainable solutions can be found for areas of conflict between man and baboon. On a practical level the trust makes provision for the rescue and care of injured or sick baboons, and aims to support rehabilitation centres that focus their attention on baboons.

Cape Species: The Chacma Baboon (Papioursinus), also known as the Cape Baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. With a body length of up to 115 cm and a weight from 15 to 31 kg, it is among the largest and heaviest baboon species. The Chacma is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck.

Unlike the northern baboon species (the Guinea, Hamadryas, and Olive Baboons), Chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward sloping face. Males can have canine teeth as long as 2 inches (longer than a lion’s canine teeth). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, males being considerably larger than females. The Chacma Baboon is found in southern Africa, rang-

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR ROUNDing from South Africa north to Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. Size and color vary within that range. Chacmas usually live in social groups composed of multiple adult males, adult females, and their offspring. Occasionally, however, very small groups form that include only a single adult male and several adult females. Chacma troops are characterized by a dominance hierarchy. Female ranking within the troop is inherited through the mother and remains quite fixed, while male ranking is tenuous and changes often. Chac-mas are unusual among baboons in that neither males nor females form strong relationships with members of the same sex. Instead, the strongest social bonds are often between unrelated adult males and females. (Wikipedia)

BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINSA visit to the famous Boulders Beach penguins should be part of every Cape Town itinerary. The penguins from this growing colony allow for close encounters with these famous sea birds - and most tourists fall helplessly in love with them. The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and these aquatic flightless birds are listed as endangered.

The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy - part of the penguins’ diet. Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town. It’s easily accessible by bus, car, taxi or train.

SENSORY FLEUR DU CAP WINE AND SALT PAIRINGS AT DIE BERGKELDER

Discover the unusual combination of Fleur du Cap wines and artisanal salts from around the world at weekly wine tastings at Die Bergkelder where handmade salted morsels meld with superb hands-off, naturally crafted wines every Wednesday from 1 October 2012. Fleur du Cap’s close affinity to nature, especially the exceptional Unfiltered range with its unbridled expression of fruit and flavour, inspired salt aficionado Chef Craig Cormack to create savoury treats to pair with these wines.

The unique flavours of naturally occurring, ancient salts are a natural fit for Fleur du Cap wines crafted in a style determined by the grapes themselves.“One of the challenges when pairing salt and wine is to create food that will enhance the wine without dominating it. The natural process of making Fleur du Cap Unfiltered wines works particularly well with unrefined, artisanal salts, reverting back to nature in both the food and the wine,” says Craig.

The unique weekly savoury parings on offer at Die Bergkelder include five Fleur du Cap wines: Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier is paired with golden cheese straws encrusted with flaked Khoisan sea salt from the West Coast. Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chardonnay is paired with olives preserved with Black Lava Salt from the lava pools of Hawaii. For an explosive taste sensation, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc is partnered with popcorn drizzled in Pakistani volcanic salt. Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot combined with classic sweet melon and Parma ham with a pinch of Persian Blue salt is a sublime pairing.

To round off this unique tasting experience, the Platter 5-Star Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest paired with decadent chocolate tart finished off with delicately pink Murray River Sea salt, will have your taste buds wanting for more. Cut deep into the slopes of the Papegaaiberg, Die Bergkelder, the home of Fleur du Cap wines, offers one of the finest wine experiences in Stellenbosch. The tranquillity of the vaulted spaces of this bottle maturation cellar founded in 1968, offers the perfect atmosphere for these unique tastings.

The tastings start at 12:00 every Wednesday and cost R80 per person. Places are limited so booking is essential. Call Karine Retief on Tel: 021 809 8225. For more information visit www.fleurducap.co.za, fleurducap.tumblr.com or join the Fleur du Cap Facebook community.

This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nip-ping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 www.sanparks.org Tel: 021 786 2329.

STEENBERG FESTIVE SEASON PICNICSIt is the philosophy of Steenberg that the enjoyment of wine should be spontaneous

and de-cluttered, yet still offering an exceptional experience. This is exactly what the Steenberg picnics are about, and this summer there will be little to beat the simple pleasure of a day spent enjoying the magical setting of this working wine farm in

the heart of the Constantia Valley! The Steenberg picnic offers a medley of scrump-tious goodies from the pantry of Food Fanatics, one of Cape Town’s leading catering companies. Picnic-goers may indulge in lip-smacking fare that includes two Italian

Panini’s enjoyed with a generous spread of the accompanying Oven roasted butternut and red onion spread with crushed pumpkin seeds or Smoked west coast snoek pate, topped with tempting Cape Cheeses from DalewoodFromage in Klapmuts. The deli-cious Charcuterie selection provided by Martin Raubenheimer of Cure Deli fame will no doubt add to the sensory delight, along with Home baked mushroom, thyme and parmesan tartlet and a Summer couscous salad. Ending off on a sweet note, melt-in-the-mouth Chocolate Brownies are sure to prove irresistible, while a bottle of one of

Steenberg’s superb ‘food’ wines rounds off this perfect picnic. Green consciousness is part of the picnic package, with everything in the picnic hamper being biodegradable:

from the recycled wine cartons to food containers and cutlery. Added to this is the choice of suppliers - based on their penchant for using local produce, and for support-ing farmers who employ humane farming methods. Guests are welcome to bring along

a picnic blanket and settle in a sunny spot on the lawn next to the reflection pools, or recline in the shade of a tree after a bout of wine-tasting at the Tasting Bar in the

Steenberg Winery. To work off some energy a leisurely stroll through the vineyards, or a game of Boules in true French style, may round off a yet another perfect day in the Cape winelands. Pre-bookings are essential. Kiddies’ picnics are available on request, as are picnic baskets with special occasions and requests. Group picnics are available

by prior arrangement for Christmas parties and corporate functions too. SteenbergVineyards, +27.217132211,eMail: [email protected],

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTEHalfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into the hinterland with their oxen and their wagons. S H O P P I N GKRUGERRAND

The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 to help market South African gold. The coin, produced by the South African Mint, proved popular and by 1980 the Krugerrand ac-counted for 90% of the gold coin market. The name itself is a portmanteau of Kruger (the man depicted on the obverse) and Rand, the South African unit of currency. Krugerrands are a popular way to invest in gold.

By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. That year South Africa intro-duced three smaller coins with a half-ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce of gold.

The success of the Krugerrand led to many other gold-producing nations minting their own bullion coins, such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979, the Australian Nugget in 1981, the American Gold Eagle in 1986 and the British Britannia coin.Private mints have also attempted to capitalize off the popularity of the Krugerrand, minting gold and silver bullion rounds (the term coin denotes legal currency) in the style of the Krugerrand. The rounds often depict Paul Kruger and a springbok antelope, some even blatantly copying the same design as on the Krugerrands themselves, though the inscriptions are altered. These bullion rounds are not offered by the South African Mint or the Government of South Africa, and are therefore not official, have no legal tender value and cannot technically be considered coins.

The Krugerrand is 32.6 mm in diameter and 2.74 mm thick. The Krugerrand’s actual weight is 1.0909 troy ounces (33.93 g). It is minted from gold alloy that is 91.67% pure (22 karats), so the coin contains one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of gold. The remaining 8.33% of the coin’s weight (2.826 g) is copper (an alloy known historically as crown gold which has long been used for English gold sovereigns), which gives the Krugerrand a more orange appearance than silver-alloyed gold coins. Copper alloy coins are harder and more durable, so they can resist scratches and dents.

The South African Mint Company produces limited edition proof Krugerrands intended as collec-tor’s items. These coins are priced above bullion value, although non-proof Krugerrands also have a premium above gold bullion value. They can be distinguished from the bullion Krugerrands by the number of serrations on the edge of the coin. Proof coins have 220 while bullion coins have 160.As the only means to legally possessing gold bul-lion, the Krugerrand offers a unique way of holding

your own gold. Krugerrands carry only a small premium over the value of their gold content. As the gold price is quoted internationally in terms of troy ounces, the value of Krugerrands can easily be determined at any time.

As legal tender gold coins, Krugerrands can be bought from, or sold to thousands of gold dealing companies and their branches worldwide. Kruger-rands are hard enough to resist normal scratching and denting - an important, practical feature, as soft 24 carat coins and bars are more easily damaged and generally require protective packaging. Krugerrands are easy to transport and store. Investgold Cape Town: 021 552 9200

ARTS AND CRAFTS

No doubts about it – South Africans are a crafty bunch. The country’s people produce a remarkable range of arts and crafts, working from the pave-ments and markets of the big cities to deep rural enclaves, with every possible form of traditional artwork – and then some.

In addition to the standard materials such as beads, grass, leather, fabric and clay, pieces are made using telephone wire, plastic bags, petrol cans and bottle tops – even food tin labels are used to create brightly coloured papier mache bowls. On sale on many a South African street corner are objects

S H O P P I N Gmade of wire, ranging from representations of the globe to cars and motorcycles – which are capable of manipulated movement – to joke cellphones and working radios.

Shops, markets and collectives dealing in African craft are thriving, providing much-needed employ-ment and income in communities such as Fugitive’s Drift in KwaZulu-Natal, which offers a huge vari-ety of basketry, or the Northern Cape Schmidtsdrift community of displaced San people, who produce paintings that constitute an imaginative and highly coloured extension of ancient rock art.

A high level of skill is brought to the production of work that has long been a part of African society, and has now found new commercial outlets.South African beadwork, once the insignia of tribal royalty alone, has today found a huge range of applications, from the creation of coverings for everything from bottles to matchboxes – and the reproduction of the red Aids ribbon in the form of small Zulu beadworks known as Zulu love letters.Basketry and ceramics, of course, were long ago brought to a pitch of perfection in traditional South African society, and the outgrowths of these forms today grace gallery plinths as often as they find a place on suburban shelves.(To read more: http://www.southafrica.info)

OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR

Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive production process making it costly as well as beautiful.

Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feath-ers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in high-end demand.

Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993.

After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven most-ly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process.

Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Rei-net area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previ-ously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.

They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and el-egancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted.

They spent months looking for and visiting facto-ries all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals.

In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone.

THE DRILL HALL AND CENTRAL LIBRARYThe foundations of the City Hall were laid on 29th August 1900, and the building finally opened on 25th July 1905, by the Mayor Alderman Hyman Li-eberman. It is built in an Italian Renaissance Style with a classical facade in a handsome campanile towering to a height of some 200ft.

The facade facing on Darling Street has a central feature surmounted by a pediment rising 82 feet above pavement level, the wings on either side are about 60ft in imposing clock tower houses the four-sided City Hall clock built to scale and half the size of London’s Big Ben.

The building is divided longitudinally, with one half of the building housing the Grand Hall and

reception rooms while the portion originally hous-ing Municipal offices and which fronts onto Darling Street is the home of the Central Library of Cape Town.A stone set into the base of the building in front of the main balcony has this inscription: “upon release from prison on 11 February 1990 and on his election as President of South Africa on 9 May 1994 Nelson Mandela addressed the nation here”.For more information go to: www.focal.org.za.

THE OLD CITY HALLBuilt in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colo-nial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on Lon-don’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town.

The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Mag-nificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass windows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.

TOURISM NEWSSOUTH AFRICA’S FROM ITS BIG-GEST TOURISM MARKET

South Africa’s marketing efforts in its biggest long-haul tourism market, the United Kingdom, received a major boost with Virgin Atlantic airline’s promo-tion of its festive season London-Cape Town route.Over 420 000 UK tourists visited South Africa in 2011, with Virgin Atlantic’s SA Country Manager, Simon Newton-Smith, saying at a press conference in Cape Town that the festive season London-Cape Town route is expected to carry 31 000 tourists from the UK into Cape Town this season and generate over R280 million to the Western Cape economy.

The direct London-Cape Town flight launched on 18 October 2012 and will run until the end of April 2013, with daily flights available on Virgin Atlantic on this popular route from the beginning of November 2012.

“Virgin Atlantic is back in Cape Town, for the 13th consecutive year now. We’re expecting to bring over 31 000 UK tourists to Cape Town on this seasonal route, exposing a lot of Brits to what we know is the best city in the world,” Newton-Smith said today.

“We know South Africa is on the bucket list for hundreds of thousands of UK tourists, the big ques-tion for everyone is always how they get here. This is why we’re particularly excited about this flight from Virgin into Cape Town, on the back of our UK tourist numbers increasing by 5.5% in the first six months of 2012, during which time UK tourists spent over R1.2 billion in South Africa,” South Af-rican Tourism’s Chief Marketing Officer, Roshene Singh, said at the press conference.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Grant Pascoe, said: “Tourism creates over 200 000 jobs in the city and the UK is a key market which we’re looking to grow. So this partnership (with Virgin Atlantic) is a very important one for us”. South Africa Tourism

UK TRAVELLERS VOTE CAPE TOWN TOPS

Cape Town got the nod as the favourite city worldwide from 17 000 readers of British news site the Telegraph, while South Africa was rated third favourite country worldwide in the 2012 Telegraph Travel Awards.

The list of winners, released by www.telegraph.co.ukin mid November, places Cape Town in top spot ahead of Vancouver and New York on Telegraph readers’ list of best cities to visit. When it came to countries as tourist destinations, South Africa came third after New Zealand and the Maldives.

Cape Town is no stranger to travel accolades. A frequent winner in the “Africa’s Leading Destina-tion” category of the World Travel Awards, Cape Town was displaced this year by the ancient medina of Marrakech in Morocco - but still took the vote as

Africa’s leading beach destination. Overall, South Africa enjoyed a big share of the spoils in the 2012 World Travel Awards for Africa, winning 32 awards out of a total 57 categories, in-cluding leading African airport, beach destination, family resort, city hotel, conference venue, safari lodge and spa resort. And the arrivals figures bear out the view that the country remains a hit with tourists, despite the global dip in travel numbers in the face of the global economic downturn.

According to Statistics South Africa, total tourist arrivals to South Africa grew by 10.5% for the first six months of 2012, more than double the global average of 5% for the same period. The country experienced particularly strong growth in overseas tourist arrivals, recording 17.1% growth in arrivals from outside the African continent, with 1.16-mil-lion overseas travellers entering the country in the first six months of 2012, compared to 0.99-million for the corresponding period in 2011. STELLENBOSCH NAMED ON TRI-PADVISOR’S LIST OF BEST WINE DESTINATIONS

Fabulous wines and glorious food – it’s no wonder that Stellenbosch makes TripAdvisor’s ‘Best Wine Destinations 2012’.

The town of Stellenbosch appears on TripAdvi-sor’s recently released list, ‘Best Wine Destinations 2012’.

This popular Western Cape town, with its pre-dominantly Cape Dutch architecture and oak-lined streets, keeps prestigious company on the list, alongside Tuscany in Italy, Sonoma County in Cali-fornia, Australia’s Hunter Valley and the province of Mendoza in Argentina.

‘You’ll find a number of excellent wineries ranging in size from grand estates to small mom-and-pop operations in the Stellenbosch/Franschhoek area,’ says the TripAdvisor accolade, which goes on to recommend Franschhoek for its white wines and Stellenbosch for its reds. ‘Definitely seek out a Cape Blend made with local Pinotage grapes,’ it suggests.

The well-travelled Stellenbosch Wine Route, 1st es-tablished in the early 1970s, is South Africa’s oldest (and perhaps best known) wine route. Fertile soils and an ideal climate have ensured the production of quality wines in the area. Today, there are close on 150 wineries in the vicinity that open their cellars to tourists and wine fundis. The route has grown to include 5 sub-routes.

On TripAdvisor’s list of top-rated wineries in the Stellenbosch/Franschhoek area are Jordan, War-wick Wine Estate, Lynx Wines and Stony Brook Vineyards. A glance through other Stellenbosch estates reveals some world-famous names, like Le Bonheur, Simonsig, Lourensford, Zevenwacht, Uitkyk and Neetlingshof.South Africa Tourism
