Hellenic Space Industry, going through a
technology maturity level with great
future growth potentials
2
Space sector is a driving force for broader and stronger
international partnerships that lead to Growth, Employment and
Competitiveness in several sectors of the economy
It is a "market" of $90 billion worldwide, which in recent years
is growing at about 8% per annum !!
The total institutional spending on space in 2012 can be estimated
to be approximately $67.8 billion
International Space Market
European companies account for 40% of commercial markets
for manufacturing and launching satellites and providing satellite
services ( 7 Billion Euros is the EU Annual Space Budget)

Greece – Space Milestones
Considerations
5
Geographic Considerations
Greece is located in the southeastern region of the EU, a geopolitically sensitive region with strong commercial and industrial interests
Greece has the biggest and most dispersed maritime area with the highest number of islands of the European Union
The greater part of the country is mountainous with a very strong topography, which in some areas creates difficulties in transportation and communication, particularly close to the border areas
The country boasts one of the most seismically active regions in the world with high frequency of natural catastrophic events (eg earthquakes, landslides, floods, forest fires)
Considerations
6
Financial Considerations ……… Hard work for everyone
The Greek economy showed signs of recession in 2009 as a result of the global
financial crisis, whereas from 2010 onwards the recession has been intensified
considerably due to country’s fiscal imbalances. Greece embark on a trilateral
mechanism of financial support, comprising the EU, the IMF and the ECB.
Reforms and restrictive policy implementations have already begun to bear
positive results
An improvement in the development trends of GDP already archived on 2013
through the acceleration of reforms aimed at the development of a more attractive
investment and business environment, including liberalization of a number of
markets, faster licensing procedures, the new Investment Law, flexibility in the
labor market, as well with a reduction in the cost of production factors due to the
crisis.
Considerations
7
Invest in Innovation
Greek Government decided to focus on niche space technologies in order to
boost local economy.
Why space technologies:
“Return-on-Investment” in space activities is in the order of a factor of 6
Utilizes investments already made by the industry due to national
participation to the European Space Agency (ESA)
Exploitation of local highly educated human resources (keep the scientists
in the country !!)
Develop technologies critical for the National Security (According to a
specific plan)
According to OECD’s Going for Growth report, Greece has made the
biggest progress of all OECD countries in structural reforms since the start
of the crisis, covering the 2007-12 period.
