A new prayer initiative for our schools has started! Come pick up your prayer wristband and 707 prayer card as we commit to pray together for the children, teachers, administrators, and staff in our area schools.

PRAY FIRST Our Pray First ministry is an effort to lead each one of us into a deeper relationship with Christ through a lifestyle prayer. Everyone is in-vited to come to the sanctuary at the Cele-bration Center for prayer and worship from 6:00-7:00 a.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m. the first Monday—Thursday of each month. Our next dates are Tuesday, September 5th —Thursday, September 7th. (In recess Monday, Sept. 4th for Labor Day.)

We all do it. We eat. But how many of us take the time or make

the time to eat with our family? And, if we eat together, is it in front of a TV or is one or more at the table distracted by the

“unseen” guest on the other end of a cell phone? A family meal doesn’t have to be a thing of the past. Cody C. Delistraty wrote

an article that appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 2014. His find-

ings are remarkable. He finds evidence that show the negative effects both physically and psychologically comes when the fam-

ily meal time goes away. Here are some of his points: ~The #1 factor for parents raising kids who are drug-free,

healthy, intelligent, kind human beings? “Frequent family din-ners.” 7

~The #1 shaper of vocabulary in younger children, even more

than any other family event, including play? “Frequent family dinners.” 8

~The #1 predictor of future academic success for elementary-age children? “Frequent family dinners.”

~One of the best safeguards against childhood obesity?

“Eating meals together.” 9 ~The best prescription to prevent eating disorders among ado-

lescent girls? “Frequent family dinners” that exude a “positive atmosphere.” 10

~The variable most associated with lower incidence of depres-sive and suicidal thoughts among eleven to eighteen year olds?

“Frequent family dinners.” 11

Not to be trite, but isn’t it interesting that there are more Bible

stories of Jesus at dinners and dinner parties than of being in the temple? We don’t do one to the exclusion of the other, but

maybe we should take notice that teaching and learning and

loving takes place in worship and in the home. In our home, the center of family interaction was the family dinner table.

In a wonderful book From Tablet to Table, by Leonard Sweet,

there are many great ideas on how we as families can recapture

the importance of community and shaping identity at our tables.

Communion is one of our two sacraments and it involves us (all of us) being invited to a table. At that table we find God’s grace

and love extended to everyone. May we extend that table into our homes and may our share meals become a place where

each life is valued and shaped and formed by the love of God

and the love we share for one another. One meal together may make more of a difference than we can possibly realize. But in

time it may become someone’s most cherish memories of shar-ing life deeply! See you at the “table place” this weekend!

WWOMENOMEN’’SS NNEWEW BBIBLEIBLE SSTUDYTUDY Please join us for this Fall’s Women’s Bible Study,

"All Things New", by acclaimed author Kelly Minter. Study the Letter of 2 Corinthians, exploring the anchoring truths of bearing treasures in jars of clay, meeting

Christ through a pressing thorn, opening wide your heart in the midst of hurtful relationships, and what it means to embrace the lost and lonely as ministers of the new covenant. Each of us has a message to pro-

claim and live by: Because of Jesus the old has gone; the new has come.

The 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning classes begin Sept. 12. The 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening classes begin Sept. 13. The studies will be held in the

Gathering Place at the Celebration Center. For more information contact Tammy Martin at 221-8939 or [email protected].
