KITCHENS are increasingly becoming the hub of many homes.
People are now investing more money into converting their kitchen area into a cool and contemporary multi-functional space.
The first thing you need to decide when planning a kitchen is whether you want to update your current kitchen or start totally afresh.
Look at what you already have, what you like and don’t like, and what you want to remove or keep. If the kitchen layout works, only change it if there is a real benefit – for example, if it increases the value of your home.
If this is the case, talk to an estate agent to see what the maximum financial gain a new kitchen would bring minus what you’re prepared to spend.
If you want an entirely new kitchen, think about the layout and how you use your current kitchen. For example, where will you want most worktop space? Do you use it for dinner parties? Do you want different areas for sitting?
You then need to look at the constraints in your kitchen, such as size and the positions of doors, windows and sockets.
Next, consider how much you have to spend - remembering to set aside at least 10% for emergencies - and then see what you can get for your money.
On average, people spend around £8,000 on a new kitchen. It’s important to consider all the costs such as installation, appliances, plumbing and electrics.
Generally most people keep a kitchen for approximately 20 years, so careful pre-planning covering your needs and wants for the room is worthwhile before making any decisions.
And remember that the key to the design of your kitchen are your storage requirements. Assess your needs – what do you have to store away and how much storage space will you therefore need. Consider also what you want to be on display or hidden away.
Think about the different types of storage available: kitchen islands, open shelves, pull-out units, corner storage racks, hooks, freestanding units such as dressers, floor-to-ceiling cupboards, plate racks and wine racks (built in or freestanding).
Once you have the dimensions of your kitchen, you can then determine what types of storage will fit where and how these will best serve your needs.

Let good advice lay a great foundationDURING your move you are going to need a legal adviser and it’s
worth remembering that a good solicitor or licensed conveyancer is worth their weight in gold.
But do you know how to get yourself the best possible deal from a legal adviser? Market research shows that most people don’t.
As with any other service, it’s a good idea to shop around before choosing a legal adviser. Ask around, particularly with people who have moved recently, to get a personal recommendation and look for someone who has experience in this field.
When you are looking to employ
the services of a solicitor or legal conveyancer, there are several questions you should ask.
These include:
* What will the legal adviser do for you?
* Charges – what exactly are you paying for and is the fee all inclusive?
Make sure the estimate covers the adviser’s fees and shows separately any amounts payable to other people by the adviser on
your behalf such as court fees, search costs or fees for swearing statements of truth.
*Experience – check how much conveyancing they do. Look at their firm’s adverts for an indication of what they specialise in.
What do you get for your money?You need a legal adviser to oversee the residential conveyancing part of your move – that is the legal term for transferring ownership of land
or property from one person to another.
There are two main stages – getting from the acceptance of an offer to the exchange of contracts, and getting from exchange to completion.
After you have accepted an offer on your home and the estate agent has sent a letter of confirmation of the agreed terms, your solicitor will start gathering the necessary information to draw up a draft contract.
The next process is getting you to the exchange stage of the move.
Your conveyancer will agree a completion date with the buyer’s solicitor, which is usually two to
four weeks from the exchange of contracts. If you need the work completed by a particular time, make sure the legal adviser understands your timetable and remember it may be more expensive to have work done quickly.
A deposit is usually paid on exchange of contracts and at this stage, you and the buyer have both made a legal commitment to buy or sell the property.
Basically good legal advisers will move quickly, study the property documents thoroughly, alert you to any potential problems and be able to explain the implications to you in simple terms.
* Recommendations – try to employ a solicitor that has been suggested to you.
* Where to look – the CLS Legal Adviser Directory can find a legal adviser in your area and you can check this out with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (www.theclc.gov.uk). Other sites worth looking at are the Institute of Legal Executives (www.ilex.org.uk), Citizens Advice (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) or the Law Society (www.lawsociety.org.uk), if you’re wanting a list of solicitors in your area.
* Charges – get estimates from a few different advisers (this does not commit you to using them) and pin down their charges.
* Experience – check for their experience in this field.
* Client Care Letter – you should get one of these once you have selected a legal adviser, setting out what they will do for you and the likely costs. If you are not given one, ask for it.

Serve up a spicy treatAround 200 years ago, an Indian migrant opened Britain’s first curry
house in London to cater for the growing fashion for spicy food.
The country soon developed a taste for spicy dishes, with curry becoming such a popular dish that a cookbook from 1852 stated that “few dinners are thought complete unless one is on the table”.
Novelist William Thackeray – who was born in Calcutta – actually penned a Poem to Curry, and inflicted a blisteringly hot curry on his anti-heroine Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair.
While more recently former foreign secretary Robin Cook described chicken tikka masala as “a true British national dish” – also illustrating how Indian recipes have over the years been modified for British tastes.
Meanwhile if you’re looking for a tasty treat to whip up in the kitchen, Kohinoor Choudhury, head chef of Zeera Indian Cuisine, recommends Aloo Tikki.
He said: “It’s a simple dish to prepare that is an Indian favourite.”
Aloo Tikki
4 Potatoes /Aloo – boiled or steamed, then mashed
Chopped Red Onion – 2 tbsp
Chopped Green Chilli – 1 tbsp
Toasted Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Finely Chopped Coriander Leaves – 3 tbsp
Salt to taste
Pinch of Black Pepper
Pinch of Garam Masala
Oil for shallow frying
Method1. Mix together the mashed potato, onion, green
chilli, cumin, coriander leaves, salt and pepper, Garam Masala.
2. Take 2 tbsp of mixture in hand and form patties.
3. Heat oil in a frying pan and place patties in the oil.
4. Keep the stove at medium heat and let one side go golden brown.
5. Turn the patties and add one tbsp oil if needed.
6. Fry this side too till golden brown and remove from pan.
Serve with mixed leaf salad and a tamarind / mayo / mint and coriander dip.
