Dia de los Muertos
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the
Dead) is celebrat-
ed on November
1st and 2nd. Dia
de los Muertos honors those who
have passed away. In Mexico peo-
ple visit the cemetery where their
loved ones are buried. They deco-
rate gravesites with marigold flow-
ers and candles. They bring toys
for dead children and bottles of
tequila for adults. They sit on pic-
nic blankets next to gravesites, tell
stories and eat the favorite food
of their loved ones.

Mexican families build altars at
home, write short poems
called Calaveras dedicating
them to the dead. They deco-
rate their altars with papel pic-
ado, flowers, sugar skulls, reli-
gious items, food, pictures of
the deceased and pan de
muerto.
Pan de muerto is the
traditional bread
people eat on this day and it is
only baked during this time of
year.
Papel Picado is tissue-
like paper used to
make beautiful art
pieces and banners in
various colors.

Saturday Sandwich at HECSY
HECSY’s Child Development Club launched “Sandwich Saturday” in Spring 2017. 30 students volunteers do-nated food, ingredients and time to make and deliver sandwiches. This year’s Sandwich Saturday was held on October 13, 2018. The sandwiches were first delivered to homeless at the Harborside Park in Chula Vista, next to the Office of Health and Human Services. The remaining sandwiches were taken and delivered to the homeless in Downtown San Diego.
Sandwich Saturday was made possible, in part, by the support from the Family Studies Department, the Child Development Club and its President Leslie Santana Verduzco, Students at HECSY and Chula Vista Campus, and William Marsden, Club Advisor and Professor.
