Welcome
Some of the most pioneering, visionary leaders in the world of composition emerged from the USA during the twentieth century. Our first programme of the 2011/12 Season presents some of those towering composers and endeavours to display their depth and diversity as well as their unique craftsmanship. The witty Piano Trio by Charles Ives contrasts with the darker world of George Crumb in his atmospheric and enigmatic Voice of the Whale in which the masked performers are bathed in blue light.
The hugely popular Steve Reich and John Adams, with Minimalist works New York Counterpoints for clarinet and tape and Road Movies for violin and piano respectively, add their invigorating, coruscating, driving music to a programme full of contrasts.
In the New Year we present a series of Lunchtime and Rush Hour concerts. These have proved very popular in the past with our audiences as they give an opportunity to hear a classic, iconic piece of chamber music alongside a new piece written for the same combination in a relaxed early evening or lunchtime setting, often with the composer present.
In March we will be returning to an old favourite of Hebrides Ensemble, the masterly Quartet for the End of Time by Messiaen, a piece we have recorded and performed many times together with new works from emerging composers.
This season of concerts which includes four world premiere performances alongside established masterpieces illustrates our commitment to music of the future as well as the past.
We invite you to share our curiosity and enjoyment of the huge wealth of great music now available to us.
I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts.
Best wishes
William Conway, Artistic Director

This programme presents a few of those composers displaying their diversity as well as their unique craftsmanship.
The witty Piano Trio by Charles Ives contrasts with the darker world of George Crumb’s atmospheric and enigmatic Voice of the Whale in which the masked performers are bathed in blue light.

‘ the key attraction of the evening was a performance of the Schoenberg that cast a deliciously human – sometimes gentle – dimension on this extraordinary work.’
