HEAVY FAVE FLEXIBILITY DOMINATES JEROME
Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat) was backed all the way down to
1-2 in Saturday=s GIII Jerome S. at Aqueduct, and enjoyed a
perfect trip en route to a convincing 4 1/4-length success to cap
a big day for his connections. Owners Klaravich Stables (Seth
Klarman) and Bill Lawrence and trainer Chad Brown were also
represented by Life Imitates Art (More Than Ready), who had
annexed Gulfstream=s GIII Dania Beach S. less than an hour
earlier.
Avoiding any trouble when Donegal Moon (Malibu Moon)
tossed his rider directly inside of him at the start, Flexibility was
reined in by Irad Ortiz to draft behind a three-way duel up front
led by Vorticity (Distorted Humor). Advancing ominously on the
home bend after a half in :47.31, the bay overtook the leaders
with a four-wide run approaching the straight and kicked away
from the pacesetter despite hinting at some greenness. In
Equality (Quality Road) rallied for third.
AHe broke very sharp today, I had to take a hold of him to get
him back,@ said Ortiz. AI was told they wanted him to rate and
save ground. When I asked, he took off and I just wanted him to
be able to switch leads in the stretch and finish in the stretch. He
did it easy."
A debut graduate sprinting in New York-bred company over a
pair of next-out winners at Belmont Oct. 10, Flexibility found
only early GI Kentucky Derby favorite Mohaymen (Tapit) better
in both the GII Nashua S. and GII Remsen S. over the local main
track Nov. 4 and Nov. 28, respectively. Cont. p3

Finding another gear, the bay collared the pacesetter in thefinal strides and kicked clear to score his first victory since hisAmerican debut in 2014. AI speak to him in French, it must work!@ quipped winning riderBrice Blanc. AHe=s been working really, really well and I think hecares for this course as well. He ran really well for me last falland he just didn=t get a chance to run during Del Mar, the racedidn=t go; the patience haspaid off, though. There wasplenty of pace to run attoday, which I think is greatbecause he seems like oncehe settles down, he canfinish up and really make anice run. He has atremendous turn of footwhen he uses it and I thinkhe=s got a lot of back class.@ Privately purchased by CHRB chairman Charles Winner (Clickhere for more on Winner) and longtime partner David Bienstockin the spring of 2014 after beginning his career in France withJean-Claude Rouget, Flamboyant captured his Statesideunveiling in this venue=s La Puente S. in April 2014. A closesecond in that year=s Pennine Ridge and third in the GI Belmont Derby, the gelding failed to hit the board in his nextthree attempts in graded company that season. Opening 2015with a pair of seventh-place efforts in Arcadia optional claimersApr. 16 and June 12, respectively, the now 5-year-old went justone better in the restricted Wicker S. at Del Mar July 22 and wassixth again in the GII Del Mar H. Winner added, AEarly on I was a little concerned because Ithought he=d be up closer to the lead, but Brice knew what hewas doing. Going into the far turn, I saw he was full of run andwhen he started moving I thought, >We got a shot.= This allworked out because my wife is French, the horse is French andthe jock is French. Awesome Banner, one of an impressive six 2-year-old debut
winners for these connections locally over the course of about a
month when he lowered the 4 1/2-furlong track record to :51.07
with a 9 3/4-length romp June 5, was hammered down to
favoritism despite the time off and did not disappoint. Hustled
to the front by Jose Caraballo, the bay doled out splits of :22.10
and :44.87 with Noholdingback Bear and Sheikh of Sheiks in hot
pursuit at the top of the stretch. Still with plenty left in the
reserves, he kicked away impressively to keep his record
unblemished.
AThis is a brilliant colt,@ offered Caraballo. AI think he=s going to
have a long career ahead of him. He is a very smart horse.
Anything you ask him to do, he=ll do it. I think he=ll go longer.
He=s a fast horse, but he=s not a speed horse, a crazy horse. He=s
very relaxed. The few times I've got on him, he=s been very

Trainer Stan Gold revealed that his charge had been sidelinedby a knee chip after his debut. AHe got the chip the first time after we breezed him after hebroke his maiden,@ Gold explained. AHe showed something waswrong, we X-rayed him and it was there. There was no questioninvolved, it was >fix it.= You just go on, you don=t think aboutthose things. It would have been nice to have him for the SireStakes, but we did pretty well in the Sire Stakes and now wehave a fresh horse with a bright future.@ Gold and Fred Brei=s Jacks or Better annexed the $500,000Florida Stallion In Reality S. with Fellowship (Awesome ofCourse) and ran one-two in the $300,000 Florida Stallion Susan=sGirl S. with Ballet Diva (Hear No Evil) and Silent Prayer (Brooks >nDown) in the fall. As for what could be next for Awesome Banner, Gold said,ABecause of his demeanor I don=t think distance is going to be aproblem. He=s sprinting because we=re training him to sprint andwe=re riding him to sprint but he=s never shown any problem todo what you want with. Certainly we=re going to try to stretchhim out.@ He added, AI think this was more impressive [than his debut]because [at] 4 1/2 furlongs, sometimes horses run great andthey never run back to it. The track record that he broke wasbroken the year before, and it=s always at a time of year when
the rain stopped, the track is dry, everything=s fast andeveryone=s running. It=s hard to gauge with a 2-year-old, but theway they do it is more important than when you look up thereat the clock. He did it so effortlessly and came back and trainedthe same way and ran back to it.@ A second-generation Brei homebred, Awesome Banner is outof a half to MSW Scrubs (Dr. Caton). He has a newly turned 2-year-old full brother, and a yearling half-sister by Ontario-basedHarris Tweed.

Lucy N Ethel, perfect in a pair of outings at Parx, passed her
class test with flying colors as the odds-on chalk here. A debut
winner after setting a quick pace against fellow Pennsylvania-
breds Nov. 16, the dark bay ran up the score to 13 1/4 lengths in
an open allowance Dec. 8, earning a stand-out 89 Beyer Speed
Figure. Tugging her way to take the early advantage, the
homebred posted fractions of :22.68 and :45.59 before stiff-
arming longshot My Dear Venezuela for a convincing victory.
AI had to use her a little bit the first part to get the early lead,@
noted winning pilot Joshua Navarro. AAs soon as they got to me
at the 3/8-pole, she gave me another gear and kept going. I was
worried. I was thinking she wins the first two times in Philly, but
Philly and here is way different. So if she wins today, she proves
she belongs, and she did it today.@
Added trainer Ramon Preciado, AShe ran how we expected. I
think the next time she=s going to be even better... She could be
better than we
thought. At the
beginning we
thought she was a
nice filly. Her first
race, she impressed
us a little bit, but in
her second race, she
really exploded. This
race she was better,
and the next time
she=s going to be
better.@
Preciado, who sent
out Lucy N Ethel=s full-brother Jake N Elwood and half-sister Hey
Kiddo to stakes wins last season, said she would be pointed to
the GII Forward Gal S. back in Hallandale Jan. 30. Kid Silver has a

"It worked out perfect,@ winning rider Joel Rosario said of histrip. AI was trying to save some ground, we had a lot of horse. Iwas waiting and then hopefully the horse in the front wouldcome in and then maybe I could go out, but he decided to stayoutside and then I went outside the other horse. I was justlooking for some room. He's a nice horse, trying really hard." Brown said of the winner, AHe really put it together. Joel fit thehorse perfectly and gave him a great ground-saving trip. Whenhe called on the horse, the horse really responded and I=m reallyproud of him. We=ve always thought he was one of our betterhorses. They=ve got a good turf series here [at Gulfstream] andwe=ll take a look at what=s next. I=m really happy for the owners(Seth Klarman=s Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence)--they=ve allowed me to be patient with the horses.@ Of sixth-place finisher Ray=s The Bar, Brown said, AIt was a taleof two trips--he was stuck behind a slow pace and wide. Not theideal trip for him. He=s trained far better than that and we=lldraw a line through this, regroup to a different stakes nexttime.@ Life Imitates Art is out of a half-sister to MGISW Street Boss(Street Cry {Ire}). The lightly raced San Onofre strung together four straight
victories capped by a track-and-trip optional claiming win in
February of 2014, but went missing until the following January,
when he finished second in the restricted Donald Valpredo
California Cup Sprint. He
completed the exacta
behind the flashy
Masochistic (Sought After) in
the GII Kona Gold S. here in
April, and was just a neck
behind Distinctiv Passion
(With Distinction) in the GIII
Los Angeles S. May 25. He
had been off since a speed-
and-fade fourth behind
Masochistic in the
GI Triple Bend S. here June
27, but showed an upbeat
worktab and proved up to
the task.
Pushed along to chase the
super-quick Distinctiv Passion through a :21.72 opening quarter
and :44 flat half, San Onofre swung off the inside to overtake
the front-runner and kept finding to deny East Coast invader
Salutos Amigos.
AI=m very, very pleased,@ said conditioner Karen Headley, who
trains the winner on behalf of her mother Aase Headley=s
Matson Racing. AThe strategy worked out perfect, finally. [In] his
last two sprints he had gone against monsters, not that this was
a soft field, but there was no Masochistic in here.@
Bruce Headley, who bred San Onofre and who originally
trained him, added AReally good way to start the New Year; my
daughter did a helluva job. I wasn=t overly confident today,
because these are all real nice horses and great trainers. I knew
it=d be tough. I=m more excited for [Hall of Fame rider] Alex

Lira extended her record to a perfect three-for-three with a
gutsy late run in the Ginger Brew S. A first-out winner on the sod
at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 11, the chestnut followed suit with
a win in that venue’s Wait a While S. Nov. 28 and was
hammered down to heavy favoritism to repeat that effort here.
The newly-minted sophomore saved ground in fourth off the
dueling leaders through opening splits of :24.40 and :48.50, but
was blocked in behind a wall of horses turning for home.
Juddmonte colorbearer Module and impressive Chad Brown
trainee Pricedtoperfection both made big wide runs to take
control in the stretch, but Lira wove between horses late and
powered through just in time to deny those rivals for a narrow
victory. Pricedtoperfection got the place earnings in a close

Awesome Speed was pounded down to heavy favoritism for
his second stakes appearance on the back of a last-out score in
the James F. Lewis S. at Laurel Park Nov. 14. Exchanging bumps
with rivals from the bell, he settled just off Aggressive Driver
(First Dude)’s right flank through a first quarter in :23.66 and
inched closer after a half in :46.69. The fractions began to wear
on that foe and Awesome Speed seized command, hitting the
three-quarter mark in 1:10.69. He cornered fairly wide into the
home straight, but fended off a late rally from El Churro, to win
comfortably, giving pilot Joel Rosario his fourth winner on the
card. Purchased by trainer Alan Goldberg for $335,000 on behalf
of Colts Neck Stables at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale after
breezing a furlong in :10.1 last March, the new sophomore ran
seventh in his Parx debut in August. Awesome Speed got off the
mark at Laurel Park Oct. 10. “It looked like he got hit one way
and then got hit another [at the start],” Goldberg said. “He
seems to have really gotten it together, but I’ve liked him all
along. We’ll see. Before the race I was thinking we would pass
the [GII] Holy Bull [S. Jan. 30] and just try for the [GII] Fountain

:22.50 and :46.17. Slipping through a seam on the rail to take
control at the top of the stretch, the bay cruised clear to score

SEA OF ERIN (c, 3, Giant’s Causeway--Tidal Dance {MSW,

a winning one after beginning his career in Kentucky. The colt
made solid headway to finish seventh on debut going 1 1/16

notable improvement with the addition of blinkers, finishing a
narrowly beaten second over a grassy mile at Keeneland Oct. 11.
The chestnut wrapped up his juvenile campaign with a distant
third-place finish behind Tiznoble (Tiznow) in a Churchill turf
test, and resurfaced in this spot as the slight 9-5 favorite. A bit
wide around the opening bend, Sea of Erin settled nicely down
the backstretch and tracked the pace between horses through a
half-mile in :49.29. Threading through an opening along the
inside on the far turn, the colt angled off the rail turning for
home and uncorked a powerful kick to win by three lengths with
something left in reserve. First-time starter Bold Salsa (Two Step

It took 42 starts and three consecutive 2015 graded placings,
including the GIII Cornhusker H. last June, but Page McKenney
attained millionaire status as a newly minted 6-year-old
Saturday. The proven router found the winner’s circle in three of
his last four starts, fielding his second win against fellow PA-

in August, before a narrow loss in similar company when
switched to the Bensalem main a month later. He entered the
Native Dancer S. with scores in the open Richard W. Small S.
over this strip Nov. 14 and Penn’s Swatara S. Nov. 25. Showing
good early speed, the chalk allowed Horacio Karamanos to
wrangle him back to sit second-last through a half in :48.27 and

Bayerd made his mark as a juvenile, capturing the Springboard
Mile in 2014, and endured some hard-luck defeats as a
sophomore in 2015. Third beaten less than a length in the GIII
Gallant Bob S. at Parx Sept. 19, the bay came up a half-length
short of GSW Hebbronville (Majesticperfection) when runner-up
in Keeneland’s Perryville S. on Halloween. Bayerd was last seen
completing the exacta behind Lewy’s Vaporizer (Lewis Michael)
in the lucrative Steel Valley Sprint S. at Mahoning Valley Nov. 23.
Given the nod as the favorite in this event rained off the turf,
the newly minted 4-year-old raced off the pace in the early
stages as four rivals took turns sparring through a quarter-mile
in :22.27. Shifted out to the four path turning for home, Bayerd
launched a prolonged rally down the center of the strip and got
up to notch a decisive score over Attain. Click for the

HALFORD HOLDS STRONGHAND FOR DUBAI
by Daithi Harvey
Irish trainer Michael Halford certainly knows what it takes to
win at the Dubai Carnival. The Curragh-based trainer was
successful back in 2012 when Invincible Ash (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}) beat none other than multiple Group 1-winning
sprinter Sole Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) in a conditions race at
Meydan, having shown good form at the previous year's
carnival. Since then Halford has been an annual visitor, and he
recorded one of the most prestigious victories of his training
career when Certerach (Ire) (Halling) landed the G2 Dubai Gold
Cup on World Cup night in 2013. The now 7-year-old is back
seeking more Carnival glory, and forms part of a strong squad
Halford is intending to send to Dubai when the carnival begins
Thursday. Numerically speaking, the Group 1-winning trainer
brings the biggest team from Ireland, as he trains six of the 12
Irish horses accepted for the Carnival. Halford gave the TDN the
lowdown on his Dubai challengers:
Redstaroverchina (Ire) (f, 2, Starspangledbanner {Aus}-Fragrant
Air, by El Prado {Ire}) is a recent addition to the Halford stable,
having previously been trained by Eddie Lynam to win a
conditions race at Naas in August before disappointing slightly in
subsequent starts when upped in grade. cont. p2
DELICACY LEADS PETERS 1-2-3 HOME Last season=s Australian champion sophomore filly Delicacy
(Aus) (Al Maher {Aus}) scored her second victory in a row during
the Australian summer, after leading home fellow Bob and
Sandra Peters homebreds Neverland (Aus) (Big Brown) and Real
Love (Aus) (Desert King {Ire}) in the G2 Perth Cup going 2400
meters at Ascot Saturday. It was the Peters= sixth Perth Cup
victory and trainer Grant Williams=s second. Ridden by Peter
Hall, while regular hoop William Pike opted for Neverland,
Delicacy carried 130 pounds from a rail draw to victory,
becoming the first winner of the G2 Perth Cup to tote that
impost, breaking Artesian (Aus) (Argonaut {GB})=s 128-pound
mark set in 1913.
AShe keeps on surprising me, she surprised us last year and she
keeps doing it,@ Bob Peters told Racing.com. AShe keeps raising
the bar but obviously barriers help.@ cont. p4
FLEXIBILITY SHINES BRIGHT IN THE JEROME Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat) finally had his shot to step out of
the shadow of the undefeated Mohaymen (Tapit) with an
impressive victory in Aqueduct=s GIII Jerome S.

the Aga Khan draft at the horses-in-training sale at Goffs. He
made his debut at the Punchestown National Hunt Festival
when finishing well adrift behind subsequent high-class flat
stayer Forgotten Rules (Ire) (Nayef) in a 'bumper' (flat race for
National Hunt horses). However, he flourished when his
attentions were returned to the flat and, following two premier
handicap wins in 2015, his rating soared to 104 from an opening
mark of 72. "It will be his first trip to Dubai but I think it will
really suit him,@ Halford noted. AHe has the ideal profile, will love
the sun on his back and the fast ground. He will most likely start
in a 10 furlong handicap Jan. 7 and he may even try the dirt at
some stage."
Toscanini (Ire) (c, 3, Shamardal--Tuzla {Fr}, by Panoramic {GB}),is a consistent homebred for Godolphin. Already establishedamong the upper echelon of sprinters in Ireland, Halfordbelieves Toscanini can eventually make his mark at the top leveland has mapped out some high-profile assignments in Dubai."He had a good season this year when he ran some brilliantraces in defeat and we are hoping to start him off in the G3 Meydan Sprint on Super Saturday before hopefully having acrack at the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night Mar. 26," theconditioner revealed.
Eastern Rules (Ire) (g, 7, Golden Snake--Eastern Ember {GB}, byIndian King) is a Carnival veteran who will be making his thirdtrip to Meydan next month. He enjoyed a fantastic period inDubai in 2013, winning twice and placing once from five starts. Not quite so good last year--though he still managed a second toSafety Check (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Al Fahidi Fort--histrainer said he believes he can still make a serious impact, especially given his rating is now two pounds below his lastwinning handicap mark. "He had a fantastic time there twoyears ago and last year he was just a bit unlucky with the draw afew times,@ Halford said. AHe loves fast ground and I hope totarget a seven-furlong handicap with him Jan. 7 and with a bit ofluck we can make an early impact. He's another one we couldtry on dirt also." cont. p3

Halford Holds Strong Hand For Dubai cont.
Wychwood Warrior (Ire) (c, 3, Lope De Vega {Ire}--Pearlitas
Passion {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) was the first 3-year-old
Halford brought to the Carnival last year and he was rewarded
with a third in the Listed Meydan Classic from two starts. He
backed up that display back home in Ireland with some smart
performances that have seen his rating rise to 102. "He's been
trained for the Carnival and I think he will do well out there,@
Halford revealed. AThe plan is to start him off in a one mile
handicap Jan. 14 and take it from there."
Certerach (Ire) (g, 7, Halling--Chartres {Ire}, by Danehill)=s defeat
of Cavalryman (GB) (Halling) in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup was a
career best and by and large he has struggled to recapture the
same level of form since then. He did, however, show a bit of
the old sparkle on his last outing when fourth in the Listed
Loughbrown S. at the
Curragh Sept. 27, and
Halford is optimistic
he can pay his way in
Dubai. "He went
lame last year and
we just struggled to
keep him right,@ the
trainer noted. ADubai
2016 has been the
target now for a
while and I am quite happy with his preparation. All going well
he'll go for a mile and a half handicap Jan. 21, then on to a mile
and six handicap Feb. 4. Assuming he pleases us in those races I
would love to target the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy Mar. 3 and it
would be nice to finish up with a crack at the G2 Dubai Gold Cup
on World Cup night."

Added Hall, AThe support for this horse, the well wishers
before the race, was amazing. She is a pretty popular horse in
West Australia. I
knew we needed
barrier one to win
the race with the

this horse=s attribute
is pickup speed. If
there is a run there,

AShe will go to the paddock tomorrow for a little while, last

Ron the Greek Unplaced in Crown Prince Cup:
Ron the Greek (Full Mandate), a MGISW in the United States,
did not defend his title in the G2 Crown Prince Cup at Al
Janadriah Racetrack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Saturday, finishing
10th after a wide journey behind Stirabout (Leroidesanimaux
{Brz}). The Nicholas Bachalard-trained 9-year-old, who races as
Wattani in Saudi Arabia, was beaten over 25 lengths, with
regular American pilot Jose Lezcano aboard. He had run second
in his warmup going 1800 meters Dec. 5. Stirabout, representing
Prince Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Kabeer Sons, settled well off the
early pace, made a bold middle move three deep with 800
meters remaining and cruised to the lead on the final bend. He
stretched clear to the wire out in the middle of the track, as Zipp
(Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}) closed from well out of it up the inside
to take second in the 2400-meter feature. (Video)
