THE MESSAGE TO THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM

The City of Pergamum

Pergamum was a city in the Roman province of Asia, west of what is now called European Turkey. History says that when Philetaerus revo l ted ag a ins t the Thracian Lysimachus in 282 B.C it became the capital of his kingdom, which in 133 BC was bequeathed by Attalus III to the Romans, who formed it into the province of Asia. The first, and for some time the only, temple of the imperial cult was built there (about 29 BC) in honour of Rome and Augustus. Pergamum was the official administrative capital of the province of Asia Minor, even though Ephesus or Smyrna may have been the first city from a commercial point

of view. Pergamum was the centre of the official religion, and the seat of imperial authority and justice in the province. It was also a centre of the four of the greatest pagan cults, of Zeus, Athena, Dionysus, and Asclepius. A small town (Bergama) still stands on the plain below the site of the ancient city.

Although Pergamum was no longer the capital of Asia in John's time, it was one of the cities in which the governor regularly heard legal cases and made decisions. As in all provinces the governor alone held the right of capital punishment.

The church in Pergamum- A church married to the World

T h e G r e e k w o r d ' P e r g a m u m ' m e a n s marriage (implying union) and fortified tower. As a s i gn , the church in Pergamum prefigures the church that entered into marriage union with the world and became a high fortified tower equivalent to the great tree prophesied by the Lord in the parable of the mustard seed (Matt: 13:31-32). As we know the church went through severe persecution by the Roman Emperors in the first three centuries. But Satan failed to destroy the church. He changed his strategy. Instead Satan tried to corrupt the church through Constantine's welcoming of Christianity as the state religion in the first part of the fourth cent.

Through Constantine's e n c o u r a g e m e n t a n d p o l i t i c a l i n f l u e n c e , multitude of unbelievers were baptized (without repentance) in to the “church.” Since the church as a chaste bride is espoused to Christ, her union with the world considered a spiritual fornication in the eyes of God.

Satan's throne: Satan's t h r o n e h a s b e e n interpreted diversely as the altar dedicated to Zeus on t h e a c r o p o l i s o f Pergamum, and the seat of the Roman Governor. As in the message to Smyrna, Satan is seen as the ultimate instigator of actions taken against Christians by local

authorities. Satan's throne is in the world where he dwells and the sphere of his reign.

In Greek Antipas means against all. A faithful witness of the Lord stood against all that the worldly church brought in and practiced. The word witness suggests that Antipas was arrested and interrogated by the Roman Governor. Finally he was executed by the Roman Governor. Hence he became a martyr of the Lord. The Greek word for martyr is same as that for witness. He was an anti-witness, bore an anti-testimony against anything that deviated from the testimony of Jesus. In the midst of persecution the church did not deny the name of Jesus but it remained faithful to the

Lord. The Lord's faith denotes all that we must believe in concerning Lord's person and work.

But the Lord has a few things against the church. There were people who held on to the teaching of Baalam, who was a gentile prophet who for some wages ent iced God's people to intermarry with the Moabites and worship their gods(Num.25:1-3). Idolatry always brings in fornication. The teaching o f Ba l a am d i s t r a c t s believers from Christ to idolatry and from the enjoyment of Christ to fornication.

In the church of Ephesus t h e w o r k s o f t h e Nicolatians were found (v.6), where as in the church in Pergamum their work has progressed to become a teaching. Today in both C a t h o l i c i s m a n d

P r o t e s t a n t i s m , t h i s N ico l a t i an h i e r a r chy prevails in both practice and teaching.

C o u l d a C h r i s t i a n participate in dinner parties with non –Christians, in meals which often could consist of food offered to

such deities and involve prayers and hymns to them. As children of God can we participate in Onasadhya, where the food is sacrificed first to an idol?

The Lord is asking the church to Repent and turn to Him.

To the one who overcomes, He will give him the hidden manna. Manna is a type of Christ as the heavenly food that enables God's people to go his way. A portion of manna was preserved in a golden pot concealed in the A r k ( E x . 1 6 : 3 2 - 3 4 ; Heb.9:4). The open manna was for the God's people to enjoy in a public way; the hidden manna signifying the hidden Christ, is a special portion reserved for his overcoming believers, w h o o v e r c o m e t h e degradation of the worldly church.

If we seek the Lord and overcome the degradation of the church today and enjoy a special portion of the Lord today will be rewarded to us in the coming kingdom as a hidden manna. If we cannot enjoy him as a special portion today in the Christian life, how can we

enjoy Him as a reward in the coming kingdom?

Here we can see a church reconciled to world and is passions. There are faithful witnesses like Antipas in the church at the same time there are people who holds the teaching of Balaam and Nicolatians.

Today the church is more prone to the world and its passions than ever before. Now –a – days for many people spirituality is a fashion than an experience. Especially the young people are addicted to cinema, serial, social media etc. which they consider as not harmful to Christian life. They consider Jesus as one of the heroes like a

As children of God it is high time to turn to the

Lord and seek his face with repentance. According to Heb.12;1 let us put away every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us and run with endurance the race which is set before us. If so, the Lord will provide us with the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name on it. May God bless us.

Moving boundary stones;pasturing stolen flocks, driving away orphan's donkeyand thrusting the needy from the path....The poor go about theirlabor of foraging food;the wasteland providefood for their children.Having nothing to cover, spending nights naked in the colddrenched by mountain rainshugging the rocks for shelter...

Fatherless child snatched from breastInfant seized for a debt..Carrying the sheaves, yet hungry..crushing olives among the terracestreading the winepresses.yet suffer thirst..The groans of the dying rise from the city, the souls of the wounded cry out for help..

Rebelling against the 'light' ;not knowing its ways orstaying in its paths,Daylight gone the murderer rises up..Adulterers, thieves...by day they shut themselves in;want nothing to do with the 'light'...For all of them midnight is their morning;making friends with the terrors of Darkness
