VENDORS FOREWARD

The Heathwaite Herd was founded by my maternal grandparents during the 1940’s in Heathwaite near Lake Windermere in the Lake District. My parents took over the herd and moved to farm in Garstang, Lancashire. A move to a larger farm in Cumbria followed in 1990 allowing me to work full �me on the farm with my parents. I now run our family farm with the support of my wife Rebecca, daughter Katherine and son Tom. I am currently milking 140 cows, of these, 20 are Friesian/Jersey crossbreds, with a further 50 heifers due to calve in the next 12 months. This has resulted in the herd becoming too big for me to manage on my own and therefore the difficult decision was made to downsize, resul�ng in this sale.

My passion for the Jersey breed is shared by Katherine, who has her own small herd and enjoys entering local shows where she has been very successful. Last year her achievements included winning Best Homebred Cow at three of the four shows that she entered, in addi�on to several first and second prize awards. This year’s showing season has started well with three 1st prizes, three 2nd prizes and a 3rd along with retaining the cup for Best Homebred and achieving Reserve Champion, at the Cumberland Show on Saturday 11th June.

Our family has always bred for high bu�erfat and protein and following our move to Carlisle we purchased bulls from the Farlam Herd, Brampton and these have been used alongside A.I. Since 2010 the herd has benefited from par�cipa�ng in the World Wide Sires Ma�ng Programme, allowing us to con�nue the focus on improving milk quality. Cows on sale today are sired by well-respected bulls, including Valen�no, Ac�on, Starbuck, DJ Jante, Riley, Eclipes, Cobalt, Stag and Judes Jason. This week’s test results; Bu�erfat 5.28% Protein 3.92% Cell count 93 Bactascan 32. Please note that these figures include the crossbreds. CIS Milk Recording records have supported herd management, although last year’s recordings were not as frequent as they should have been, recordings have been more regular this year with the latest results being from 8th June 2016.

The herd is cubicle housed with a feed regime of clamp silo and cake in the parlour, in addi�on to outdoor grazing from April – October. The herd calve all year round with the emphasis on spring/summer calving. Other than the purchase of one heifer calf and six bulls from the Farlam Herd, this has been a closed herd for the past 40 plus years.I feel this sale offers something for everyone from the Pedigree Jersey to the Friesian crossbred, with a mix of age groups. With their quiet nature I hope they do as well for their new owners as they have done for us.

Hassall Bothers Auc�oneers and Barbers Auc�ons are delighted to have received instruc�ons from J A Jenkinson & Son, Fordsyke Farm, Carlisle to conduct a major reduc�on of their super Heathwaite herd of Jersey and Cross bred ca�le.

This has been a hard decision for the family to make, but with stock numbers being at an all �me high something needed to be done to ensure space for the next batch of In calf Heifers coming through, the herd is being moved to Market Drayton Market Auc�on Centre for sale convenience and this provides a great opportunity for many different purchasers.

The herd has been cra�ed over many years and the use of top quality sires has paid off. The herd looks on great form and has many superb young cows, they are milky with high fat and protein, with an average of 5.28 Fat and 3.74 Protein with cell counts rolling at 126. CIS milk recorded, they have used the World Wide Sires Ma�ng programme, which has been working very successfully. Great sires feature throughout the catalogue including Valen�no, Ac�on, Starbuck and DJ Jante to name just a few.

A wide selec�on is on offer at the sale from milking cows and heifers to dry cows, the cows are medium sized, displaying awesome udders and they track on outstanding feet and legs making these cows ideal for many different farming prac�ces. The herd is uniformed in conforma�on and this has also been proven with Katherine’s passion for showing where they have excelled many �mes in the show ring.

The herd is managed strictly on a commercial basis and the cows receive grass silage and concentrates according to yield in the herringbone parlour where they are milked twice daily. The herd graze from April to October with a spring-summer calving emphasis. During the winter months the herd is housed in cubicles.

The herd has been closed on the female line for around 40 years and the only purchases have been bulls to develop the gene�cs at Fordsyke farm.

The herd is not vaccinated for BVD, Lepto or IBR as there has never been any evidence within herd and regular screening is done for Johnes disease. The herd is looking on fine form and provides great diversity that will appeal to many purchasers. For the pedigree breeder there are some great individuals and many of the unregistered animals are s�ll eligible for registra�on. For the commercial milk producer there are lots of great honest ca�le in both the pure Jersey and Crossbreds for sale.

required will pay the full purchase price.

3. Payment 1. 3.1 In any event all lots purchased must be paid for in full on the day of sale. No lot must be removed from the sale

5. Title to and Removal of Lots 1. 5.1 All lots purchased shall be removed on the date of sale at the Buyer’s expense. 2. 5.2 The Buyer will be responsible for any damage caused in the course of such removal to other lots or to any part of

the premises on any part of which the auction is held regardless whether such damage is caused by the Buyer, his employees or agents or otherwise and whether such damage is a result of negligence or otherwise. Notwithstanding Condition 3.3 and the removal by the Buyer of any Lot, title to such Lot shall not pass to the Buyer until: -

1. 5.2.1 The Buyer shall have paid the Purchase price in full and 2. 5.2.2 No other sums whatever shall be due from the Buyer to the seller or the Auctioneer.

5.3 In respect of any such damage if so required by the Auctioneers the Buyer will pay the cost of repairing all such damage (asestimated by the Auctioneers whose estimate shall be final and binding) before removal of any lots. Until such payment is made the Buyer grants the Seller and/or the Auctioneers a lien over any lots bought by him.

6. Conduct of the Auction 1. 6.1 The Seller may offer any lots subject to a reserve price. 2. 6.2 The Seller or the Auctioneers may: - 1. 6.2.1 Bid up to such reserve price. 2. 6.2.2 Withdraw from sale any lot without disclosing a reserve. 3. 6.2.3 Rescind any sale within 3 hours of the final lot being sold if the lot has been sold under any reserve.

In the event of such rescission the purchase price or any part already paid by the Buyer shall be repaid but the parties and the Auctioneers shall be under no further liability to each other.

3. 6.3 The Auctioneers may refuse the bid of any person without giving a reason and may regulate bidding as they see fit.

4. 6.4 No bidder may advance less at a bid than the sum named from time to time by the Auctioneers. 7. Neither the Seller nor the Auctioneers shall be liable in any way for any loss or damage on any part of the premises

on any part of which the auction is held. 8. In the event of breach by the Buyer of any of these conditions the Auctioneers may rescind any contract with the

Buyer and put up and re-sell any lots the subject matter of such contract and the Buyer will immediately pay to the Auctioneers as a liquidated demand any deficit arising on the second sale.

LIVESTOCK DECLARATION 1. I further declare that the Auction Lot Numbers are correctly matched to the Official Ear Tag Numbers. I

authorise the Auctioneers to act on my behalf without any responsibility in respect of Ear Numbers on Passports.

2. I/We certify we have valid Passports for all Cattle born after 1st July 1996, and these have been properly signed and completed.

3. All Cattle born after 1st January 1998 are warranted to have double tags affixed and that each of the tags matches the Ear Number stated on Passport .

4. Livestock sold for slaughter is warranted under the Food & Safety Act 1990 and is sold fit for human consumption, the vendor will be responsible for any rejected animals and costs occurred.

5. All movement comply with the relevant TB Regulations and vendors have checked the TB status of the cattle section before unloading.

6. No warranty over the effectiveness of any vaccination can be given or implied by either the vendor or the auctioneer.

7. All treatments must be declared by the vendor when presented for sale and withdrawal period notified. 8. All cattle must be accompanied with a correct BCMS issued passport. 9. No born cattle born before 1st August 1996 can be sold without being accompanied by an appropriate

DEFRA Licence. 10. All feedstuffs for animals which are mixed on the farm do not contain:-

any approved substances above legally permitted maximum and/or any substances which are used illegally.

11. They have been fed only normal foods and are free from prohibited substances. No animal presented has been fed Protein derived from animal offal. 12. They have been kept to a standard of husbandry consistent with the DEFRA Code of Recommendations for the Welfare of Livestock 13. No substances (eg. Growth promoting hormones anti-microbials or B-agonists) are used illegally in rearing or finishing animals on the farm. 14. All cattle have come from premises, which has had no movement of FMD susceptible animals onto it in the previous 6 Days (other than permitted exceptions) or any signs of FMD or other notifiable diseases have been seen. 15. The movement complies with the relevant general licence.
