The stakes just got higher as the UKs two largest airports London’s Heathrow and Gatwick continue to battle it out before this summer’s final decision on which airport will be expanded.

Heathrow just announced it will meet and, in most cases, exceed the conditions set out in the Airports Com-mission’s recommen-dation for Heathrow expansion.

In July last year, the independent Airports Commission unanimously and unambiguously recommended expanding Heath-row, after a three year, £20 mil-lion study into the best option for maintaining the UK’s global avia-tion hub status.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye has written to the British Prime Minister with a plan which will en-able the UK government to make the choice that will deliver up to £211bn in economic benefit and 180,000 jobs by approving a third runway at Heathrow.

Addressing noise concerns the Heathrow camp supports the intro-duction of a ban by government on scheduled flights for six and a half hours between 2300 and 0530 – an increase from five hours today - and supporting the earlier intro-

duction of the ban after planning consent is received and the neces-sary airspace has been modernised.

“I am proud to submit a compre-hensive plan that meets and ex-ceeds your demands. This is a big commitment from us, but it is the

right choice for the country, local commu-nities and jobs across Britain,” said Heath-row CEO John Holland-Kaye.

Meanwhile south of London, Gatwick Air-

port has responded to Heathrow’s announcement by reasserting that Gatwick remains the only expan-sion plan that can actually deliver for the UK.

ERA and RAA – working together for regional aviationThe working relationship between the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) and the Regional Airline As-sociation* (RAA) continues to be of great benefit to both parties, notes Simon McNamara, Director General ERA, from the RAA’s annual confer-ence in Charlotte, North Carolina, US. “Attending this year’s highly produc-tive RAA conference has reaffirmed the importance of working closely with our US partners to defend, pro-tect and support the regional aviation community on both sides of the Atlan-tic,” explains McNamara.

The Gatwick camp argues that it will provide the same growth and the same benefits that the UK has been waiting decades for without the noise impacts of Heathrow, without break-ing air quality limits, at half the cost and with no public subsidy.

Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said:

“This is a desperate last throw from a project that has repeatedly failed. Heathrow’s air quality plans, for example, fail the most ba-sic credibility test. You can’t promise no more cars with a third runway and at the same time to propose to expand the M25 and plan to spend millions on parking.

“Heathrow has constantly failed the environ-mental tests and the public and politicians won’t be fooled by yet more warm words which have been heard for decades.

“Rather than circling around a failed solution that will never happen, we should get on with

something that can actually happen - only Gatwick can deliver for the UK. Heathrow can promise many things but they cannot wish away the reality of its location. An expanded

Heathrow will newly impact hundreds of thou-sands of people currently not affected by air-craft noise - an expanded Gatwick would im-pact less than 3% of this number.”

The new cell will expand Vector’s local test capacity on turboprop models supported from the Summer-side overhaul facility, such as the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A and PW100 series, thus minimizing turn-around times (TATs) for its customers globally and supporting further market share growth.

The Cadet’s airframe, rotor system, and power plant (Lycoming O-540-F1B5) are the same as the proven R44 Raven I. Where the Cadet differs is the rear seats have been re-moved, providing ample cargo space. The maximum gross weight has been reduced to2200lb and the engine power has been derated to 210hp takeoff and 185hp continu-ous. Previous Air Canada biofuel flights used biojet that was segregated from regular jet fuel and loaded separately into an aircraft via tanker truck. By contrast, CBSCI’s objective is to start develop-ing a more efficient operational framework that will introduce biojet into a multi-user, co-mingled airport fuel supply system. The CBSCI project is a first in Canada and is aimed at creating a sus-tainable Canadian supply chain of biojet using renewable feedstocks. Canada has abundant ag-ricultural and forestry biomass resources, with globally recognized sustainable production and harvesting practices. The biojet used in this pro-ject will be sourced from commercially available, certifiably sustainable Canadian oleochemical feedstocks using the Hydroprocessed Esters and a Fatty Acids (HEFA) conversion process. The biojet will be blended with petroleum jet fuel to meet all technical quality specifications before being introduced into a shared fuel tank at Montreal-Trudeau Airport. The CBSCI project will also iden-tify and help solve supply logistic barriers that will arise when aviation biofuels are introduced at major Canadian airports.

Europe are being awarded to four service provid-ers, who will share some 1,000 routes and approx. 30,000 consignments. Expeditors, DHL Global Forwarding, Beijing AOG and Global Airfreight will transport to 20 different countries in the fu-ture. The optimized transport network offers a significant reduction in transit times, since moni-toring is performed on an ongoing basis. Collec-tion and distribution are bundled optimally and the communication processes reduced owing to fewer transport providers.

With almost five million passengers served in April 2016, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) saw passen-ger figures decline by 2.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. FRA’s traffic perfor-mance was distorted by a number of special and base-year effects, including a public sector strike on April 27, the closure of Brussels Airport and the earlier timing of the Easter holidays, with some travelers already departing in March in-stead of April, as in the previous year. In marked contrast to passenger traffic, cargo (airfreight + airmail) volumes experienced strong growth, soaring by 5.0% to 181,948 metric tons. Far Easttraffic was the main growth driver, with cargo ton-nage to/from this region climbing by 9.0 percent. Freight volumes on routes to/from China, Japan, and India even recorded dynamic double-digit growth. While cargo throughput declined duringthe first three months of 2016, cumulative cargo volumes in the year to April reached positive ter-ritory again for the first time, growing by 0.5%. Despite the strike on April 27, maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 0.2% to 2.48 million metric tons, thus even exceeding the previous April record achieved last year. With some 39,000 takeoffs and landings, aircraft movements de-creased by 2.1%.
