Chronicles (Continued)

02/21/02: Remedial Action Plan (RAP) 02/21/02: Projected Pilot Project Costs

 Consulting: $ 35,000.00 Vendor Cost $ 27,502.15

09/02/02: Initial Installation Dec. 02: Confirmatory SI Å Failed to Meet the RO Jan. 03 : 60-days extension Å Failed to Meet the RO Mar. 03 :120 days extension Å Failed to Meet the RO

Æ Found more (?) PCE: 4,700 ppm (~ 4 ft)1,300 ppm (~ 24 ft)

12/05/03: Additional Site Investigation 12 SBs (32 ft) Å mostly delineated (by RO)

Heated Soil Vapor Extraction (HSVE) System

Enhances the volatilization of VOCs by supplemental heat Heat Source: Underground pipes which contain heated material Heated Material: water (or oil with polymer) Strengths:

Relatively easy to install & inexpensive Faster result than conventional SVE system

Weaknesses: Occupies a larger space than conventional SVE system Additional heat source is needed More maintenance is required (boiler failure) Retains all of the problems of SVE system (short circuit, etc.)

Technical Information

 41 SBs (or 33 SBs) & 4 MWs (dry): 50 ft Deepest Contamination at 24 ft Highest Contamination: 4,700 ppm Area to be Remediated: 40 ft (H) x 20 ft (W) Volume to be Remediated: 40 ft (H) x 20 ft (W) x 30 ft (D)

(due to depth Æ much larger area Æ much more volume !)

 No GW down to 50 ft K (Hydraulic Conductivity) = 1 x 10-8 cm/sec (lab test) FOC (Fraction of Organic Carbon) = 1.3 % - 2.0 % Soil Type: very tight clay.

Cost Information ($109,536.91 as of 04/30/2004) Site Investigation: $44,054.76 33 SBs & 4 MWs 90 VOCs Note: SI Cost for 8 SBs before the Fund:

$8,000 is NOT Included.

 HSVE Pilot Project: $65,482.15 $ 2,980.00: RAP $ 62,502.15 HSVE Installation &

Maintenance)

Future PlansRemediation Objectives for PCE: 408 ppm (Csat)

Evaluating the Following Remedial Technologies: Options Issues

 Chemical Oxidation a. Overkill for Oxidant: FOC = 1.3 % ~ 2.0 % b. Many many injection points: K= 1x 10-8 cm./sec

Excavation a. Down to 30 ft Structural Issue

Electrical Heating a. Cost $500,000 and up (?) b. Utility Issues

Lessons Learned

The more soil borings, the better it is Especially in the tight clay soil zone Hit or Miss?

Be realistically optimistic Vendor’s statement: 80- 90 % of contamination

removal in 2 months according to the modeling bysuper computer (!!)

Takes longer than expected. Tight clay is always the problem.

Sanders Cleaners Two additional Injections Three times more costs than originally expected

(if successful !?).
