Helical CoilHeaterHeats thermal fluid, which heats asphaltstorage tanks, drum mixers, silos andother components of an HMA plant.Designed around a helical coil andprovide high efficiency, simplicity, lowmaintenance and relatively low cost. Coilmeets ASME code. HC series (shown)has a manifold that enables the heaterto operate with multiple thermal fluidcircuits. Outputs range from 0.7 to 3-million Btu/hour.

PRODUCTSFOR HMAPRODUCTIONHeatec products for the HMA (hot mix asphalt)

industry are primarily heaters and storage

tanks. We specialize in fired-heaters that heat

thermal fluid, which in turn heats major

components of asphalt facilities. We also make

tanks that have built-in burners and tanks with

electric heaters. And, of course, we make a

number of other products used at HMA plants.

Horizontal ACTanksHeat and store liquid asphalt cement. Can also be used for other liquids, suchas heavy fuel oil. Available in 11 sizeswith capacities from 5,000 to 40,000gallons. Tanks for stationary HMA plantsare mounted on steel skids that bolt toconcrete foundations. Tanks forrelocatable plants have built-in steelfoundations that rest directly on theground. The tanks have serpentine heat-ing coils. Liquid asphalt in the tank isheated by hot oil flowing through thecoils. Fully insulated.

HelitankCombines a hot oil heater with a heatedasphalt storage tank. Fully insulated. Thetanks are available in 6 sizes with capaci-ties from 10,000 to 35,000 gallons. Thetanks have serpentine heating coils.Liquid asphalt in the tank is heated byhot oil flowing through the coils. Thestandard heater mounted on the goose-neck is a Heatec Model HCS-100. It hasan ouput of one million Btu/hour. Whenfurnished with an optional manifold and100 gpm manifold pump, the heater canalso heat silo cones, traverse conveyor, and a drag conveyor. Numerous optionsare available.

Direct-Fired ACTankCombines a burner and fire tube with afully insulated storage tank. Available in6 sizes with capacities from 10,000 to35,000 gallons. The burner is mountedexternally on one end of the tank. Itfires directly into a fire tube or heatingchamber inside the tank. Three types offire tubes are available. The fire tubeheats asphalt cement surrounding thetube. If additional heating is needed forplant components the tank can usescavenger coils, which scavenge heatfrom the asphalt cement.

Portable FuelTank withPre-heaterStores heavy fuel oil and pre-heats thefuel on the run as it is burned by a fueloil burner. Available in 6 sizes from10,000 to 35,000 gallons. Pre-heatersuse hot oil (thermal fluid) to heat No. 5or No. 6 fuel oils for aggregate dryers.Pre-heating lowers the viscosity of theoil so it can be atomized by the burner. The pre-heater increases the tempera-ture 100 degrees F at a rate of 1,000gpm. This system is also available as askid-mounted unit. Insulation is optional.

Fuel Tank withDoubleContainmentStores fuel and protects against accidentalspillage. The tank has a secondaryenclosure to keep the fuel from escap-ing from a leak or rupture in the primarytank. The main concern is for theenvironment. However, the containmentalso minimizes the impact of an acciden-tal spill on operation of an HMA facility. The containment enclosure is fabricatedfrom steel. On portable tanks the enclo-sure is a second tank that fully enclosesthe main tank—a double-walled tank.

Fuel Tank withInternalPre-heaterSimilar to the tank with an externalpre-heater except it pre-heats the fuelin two stages. The pre-heater is mountedin one end of the tank, eliminating theneed for it to be insulated. The walls ofthe heater initially heat the fuel in the tankbefore it is used. The coils inside thepre-heater provide the second stage ofheating as the fuel flows to the burner, further reducing the viscosity of the fuelfor atomization. Optional insulationis shown.

Additive TankStores and heats liquid additives for HMAplants, both drum mix plants and batchplants. Available in 2 sizes, with capaci-ties of either 1000 or 2000 gallons.Heating is either electric or by hot oilprovided by the thermal fluid heaterused to heat other plant components.Fully insulated. Either skid-mounted(shown) or portable.

ElectricallyHeated TankStores and heats asphalt cement, fuel,or other liquids. Available in a numberof sizes with capacities of 5,000 gallonsor more. Steel pipes inside the tankcontain electric heating elements toheat the contents of the tank. Fullyinsulated. Either skid-mounted (shown)or portable. Also available in verticalconfiguration.

AC CalibrationTanksUsed to calibrate the liquid asphaltmetering system of a drum mix asphaltplant. Available in two styles, a verticaland a horizontal. Capacity is 1,028gallons. The tanks are mounted on loadcells and have a LED readout. Jacketedasphalt lines on the tank are heated byhot oil provided by the thermal fluidheater used to heat other plant compo-nents. The tanks are not insulated sincethey are not normally used to storeasphalt cement.

Pumpsand StrainersAre normally included as part of theasphalt heating and storage system. They are used for asphalt cement, hotoil and fuel. An asphalt unloading pumpwith strainer (shown) is used to unloadasphalt from delivery trucks. Anotherasphalt pump is used to supply asphaltfrom its storage tank to the drum mixeror batch plant. Asphalt pumps arepositive-displacement pumps and haveheating jackets. Unloading pump sizesrange from 3 to 5 inches. Supply pumpsrange from 2-1/2 to 5 inches.

AC MeteringSystemProvides continuous metering of asphaltcement for drum mix plants. Uses twopumps and is known as “a pumppushing a pump.” The system can becalibrated to an accuracy of plusor minus one-tenth of one percent (0.1percent). One pump is active and theother is passive. The active one ismotor-driven and acts as a conventionalsupply pump. The liquid AC causes theshaft of the passive pump to rotate andoperate an encoder. It generates asignal that provides flow information.A strainer is included.

Piping for Asphaltand Hot OilCan be factory pre-fabricated for fieldinstallation when we build othercomponents of the asphalt heating andstorage system. We design the systemto have the shortest piping runs and toprovide fast heating on plant startup. Wecan also insulate all heated pipes tominimize heat loss. Heatec also offersfield installation of both pre-fabricatedpiping and field-fabricated piping.

    PRODUCTSFORINDUSTRIALUSES

Heatec products for industrial use are primarily thermal fluid and

process heaters. We make a wide variety of fired-heaters, both in

a horizontal configuration and in a vertical configuration. Some

heat thermal fluid, which in turn heats tanks, presses, dryers,

reactors, chillers, extruders and steam generators. Others heat

products that flow through the heating coils of the heaters.

HCI HorizontalHelical CoilHeaterHeats thermal fluid, which heatsother equipment used for industrialprocessing. Twelve models are availablein both horizontal and vertical configu-rations. Vertical Down-Fired HeaterIs an upright helical coil heater with the burner mountedon top of the heating chamber. Used in manufacturing, especially where a small footprint is needed. Twoversions are available. One has a single coil for two-passgas flow. The other has two coils for three-pass gas flow.Outputs range from 500,000 to 60 million Btu/hour.

Vertical Mixing TankUsed in the roofing industry to heat and mix modifiedbitumen. Also used in the chemical industry for heatingand mixing chemicals. Available with top-mountedmixers and furnished complete with heating coilssurrounding the tank, insulation, and aluminum insula-tion covers. Designed for each application. Tank sizesrange from 500 to 20,000 gallons.

Bath HeaterIndirectly heats process fluids in eithergaseous or liquid states. The fluids flowthrough the heated coils in the heater. The coils are immersed in a liquid bathheated by a fire tube, which is heatedby a burner. The liquid bath may be amixture of water and glycol, a saltsolution, or occasionally a thermal fluid, depending upon the temperaturesneeded. Capacities range from 300,000to 6 million Btu/hour.

Waste HeatRecovery unitRecovers heat from exhaust gases ofgas-powered turbines or other machinesor processes that generate heated gasesthat might otherwise be wasted. Can beused with turbine engines, recriprocatingengines, or with process streams. Thehot gases are routed around finned coilsthat pick up the heat. The coils heat fluidflowing through them. The fluid is usedto heat other materials. We design theunits for your specific application.

Cabin Style HeaterIs used mainly in the chemical, petrochemical, andpetroleum industries. The heat inside of the cabin shellis directed outward to coils on the inner walls. Thisprovides direct heating of the process fluids passingthrough the coils. This type of unit is used primarily indifficult high-temperature processes (Amine and DEAre-boilers) where frequent cleaning of the combustionchamber is needed. Capacities range from 1 to 50million Btu/hour.

Expansion Tankand PumpAre usually provided as options for vari-ous types of heaters. Larger heaters usu-ally have expansion tanks and pumpsmounted on separate skids as shownhere. However, smaller heaters may havethem mounted on the same structure asthe heater.

Steam GeneratorProduces steam without the use ofa fired boiler. Heated thermal fluid froma thermal fluid heater circulates throughthe tubes of the steam generator, heating water surrounding the tubes andconverting it into steam. This hassignificant advantages over a boiler witha fire tube. Unlike a boiler, the heatedtubes in the steam generator can neverget hotter than the thermal fluid flowingthrough them. This eliminates the explo-sion hazards commonly associated withboilers. Moreover, it eliminates the needfor a boiler tender, who must be presentwhenever a boiler is in operation.

Electric HeaterHeats a variety of liquids. Has a seriesof pipes that contain electric heatingelements. The elements heat fluid or gasflowing through the chamber surround-ing the heating pipes. Capacities rangefrom 100,000 to 600,000 Btu/hour (29to 176 kW).

Fuel SkidConditions a wide variety of fuel oils orgases used to fire heaters, boilers andgas turbines. Fuel oils are conditionedby heating. The heat can be provided byan external source that supplies heatedthermal fluid or hot water. Or the heatsource can be hot process air or hotprocess liquids. Another option iselectric heat. Gases are conditioned bycooling and re-heating or heating alone. When conditioning requires cooling thecooling source can be chilled water froman external source or by a refrigerationunit mounted on the skid.

    SPECIALPRODUCTS

Heatec’s special products are mainly adaptions of our heating,

mixing and storage products used in the hot mix asphalt

industry. They include heaters and polymer blending systems

used at asphalt terminals and HMA plants. They also include

shipping containers for transporting asphalt cement aboard

ships. And they include helical coil heaters for heating water

    for ready-mix concrete.

Terminal HeaterHeats thermal fluid, which in turn heatslarge asphalt storage tanks and otherequipment at asphalt terminals. Helicalcoil heaters are normally used for thispurpose. The heater pictured here hasan output of 8-million Btu/hour. It heatsa total of 2,500,000 gallons of liquidasphalt stored in two large storage tanks, plus five smaller tanks used for polymerblending. The combustion air pre-heateratop the heater boosts its efficiencyto 87%.

StationaryPolymer SystemThe typical system blends SBSpolymer pellets with virgin asphalt. Thestationary system pictured here at anasphalt terminal includes a tank forvirgin AC, a pellet hopper, a conveyor, amixing tank and a holding tank. Tanksand other components are heated bythermal fluid from a helical coil heater.Pellets make multiple pases through amill that shears them into smaller piecesfor optimum blending, also aided byelevated temperatures. Similar systemsare available for ground rubber.

Portable PolymerSystemBlends SBS polymer pellets with virginasphalt. Includes a tank for virgin AC,a pellet hopper, a conveyor, a mixing tankand a holding tank. A thermal fluid heatermounted on the gooseneck of the trailerprovides heat for the tanks. Pelletsmake multiple pases through a millthat shears them into smaller pieces foroptimum blending, which is alsoaided by elevated temperatures. Similarsystems are available for ground rubber. The entire system is mounted on a trailerfor easy portability.

Direct-Fired WaterHeaterProvides the ideal solution for heatingwater to make concrete in cold weather.Heated water allows ready-mix concreteproducers to prepare mixes despite win-ter weather. In many locations it enablesthe producer to operate year round. Theheating system burner fires into a largecombustion chamber, lined with refrac-tory material for longer life. Secondaryheating tubes on our deluxe tank allowour heating system to outperform otherdirect-fired tanks on the market. Capaci-ties range from 2,000 to 30,000 gallons.

Booster HeatExchangerCan be used to increase the temperatureof asphalt cement as it flows througha jacket surrounding finned pipes inthe heat exchanger. The finned pipesare heated by hot oil that flowsthrough them. The hot oil must beprovided from an external sourcesuch as a thermal fluid heater. The heatexchanger can raise the temperatureof the asphalt up to 50 degrees F.Typical use is at asphalt terminals toboost the temperature of asphalt cementso it can be mixed with polymers.

  • AC Shipping ContainerFor shipping bulk liquid. Used primarily for shippingasphalt cement aboard sea-going vessels.
