Heat Theory
By: Morgan Rogers Heat: Transfer of thermal energy from one object to another, l ike work (transfer of mechanical energy)

Why Heat is important: The key to human life! J
1
Keeps you alive à the
human body needs
heat for warmth, and
because the energy
breaks down and food
2
Powers our homes,
buildings, cars,
laptops, and
everything we use in
daily life.

Evolve Explain
Evolution of the various Heat Theories:
1
The Ancient Greeks à
The Ancient Greeks believed that
heat was derived of one of the four
elements of earth: fire.
Phlogiston à
An invisible substance
found in things that
burned
Caloric à
Invisible fluid that would flow from warm objects to cooler ones (Calorie: amount of energy to heat 1g of water to 1 C) Count Rumford à
Heat is equivalent to energy
Current à Kinetic
Molecular (James Joule)
Energy à ability to do work
Work à transfer mechanical energy
W = F Δd

WHERE: We find daily uses for heat
1
- Electricity
- Cooking
- Washing and drying
clothes
- Providing warmth
- Running our
appliances
2
- Keep living things
alive (Heat our
bodies, plants,
animals, and humans
food)
5
+ Difference between Heat and Temperature
Heat: the total amount of
thermal energy in a
substance
Temperature: the
average kinetic energy of
atoms in a substance
E.g. Iceberg VS a cup of
coffee
The iceberg has more
heat but a lower
temperature and the
coffee has less heat but a
higher temperature
6
Additional information!! Relevant, interesting, and extra facts about heat!
The human can only survive 24 hours without heat Heat moves in 3 ways: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation Dallol, Ethiopia is the hottest inhabited place on the planet
+
Geothermal Power:
Geothermal power
is when heat from
the earth’s crust is
used to make
electricity
Laws of thermodynamics:
1. energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be transferred from one object to another or from one form to another
2. it is not possible for any process to remove thermal energy from an energy source and convert it entirely to work i.e. nothing is 100% efficient
