Invest in the Future of our CommunityBy Anne Hull, Director of Development

Amazing as it seems, Heartstrings Community Foundation is approaching our 15th year of service! Many things have changed in those fifteen years — our waistlines, hairstyles, fashions — but some things don’t change. There will always be people in our community who need assistance. I am proud and thankful for the period of time Heartstrings Community Foundation has provided employment in the community for adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

As you can see from the photos, Heart-strings has come a long way in fifteen years; but, we have a long way to go. I like to refer to our donors/sponsors as Investors. People invest in something they feel will bring a return to them. Investors in Heartstrings receive a return over and above their individual tax deduction. Some of the benefits of being a Heartstrings Investor include evidence that some of your tax dollars are invested in your community, successful HCF businesses provide necessary goods in your community, people with I/DD are less dependent on government services when they are employed, Goody Delivery custom-ers enjoy delightful treats and build strong friendships with people they might never have known without HCF, and the community becomes more inclusive and family friendly when there are options for people with I/DD.

Here are some suggested methods to invest in Heartstrings:

• A monthly investment will help insure that Heartstrings Community Foundation has a dependable recurring income stream. This can be done at www.heartstrings.com.

• Invest in our special events. We have two major events each year: Heartstrings In Bloom Gala–Auction/Dinner/Dance and Team Heartstrings in the Hospital

Hill Run. Supporting each of these events will bring great benefits to our organization.

• Become a business partner. Arrange for Goody Delivery at your office, shop in the On My Own® Home Accessories Store, Sacks on Santa Fe Clothing Store, On My Own Too (Booth 13) at Sentimental Journey Antique Mall in Olathe and purchase one of our Custom Gift Baskets. Each time you shop in our businesses the employees are paid a percent-age of that sale! This is a direct support for your friends who are employed at Heartstrings!

I sincerely hope you enjoy the vintage photos and make plans to invest now to insure Heartstrings services for many more individuals in the KC Metro Area for many future years.

2015 Push Day in TopekaEvery year at the beginning of the

Legislative Wrap-up Session in the Kansas Legislature, Interhab, a statewide advocacy group, organizes a day where persons with I/DD, their families, friends, providers and others interested in support-ing them, visit the Capitol to lobby for issues pertinent to services for the I/DD population. Heartstrings sent 8 employees

with two staff members to participate in the event. We shared our experiences with successful employment and why it is so important to maintain the levels of support necessary for continued success. For lunch, our teams were able to experience buying lunch from a food truck selling Hawaiian food! A couple of people had to be encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and they did! As of this writing, the legislative session is continuing.

Happy and Sad All at the Same TimeNew Members Join the Board as We Say Goodbye to Longtime Friend

Simplify Your Life with a Custom Gift Basket

The Holiday Giving Season is a busy one for all of us. This year let Heartstrings simplify your life! We can create and

produce a basket to fit any occasion and meet any budget. With enough notice, we can purchase specialty items to customize your gift, whether it is a corporate-branded item or just finding the perfect gift item. Perhaps a basket filled with cinnamon rolls from Jane’s Yummy Buns would be the perfect birthday or office gift.

Our employees can be involved in all areas of the process, depending upon their skills. The gift basket business is an

important part of the employment options we provide, yielding nearly $30,000 per year. We hope you will consider ordering from Heartstrings whenever you need a gift and pre-order your Holiday Baskets in September.

2015 Board Members: Bunny Higgins, Gavin Hull, John Begley, Katheigh Degen, Gayle Packer, Bob Brandt, Teri Butler-Jones (front) Cory Davis, Jeanel Gressel, Christine Schwermann, Anne Hull and Tom Tadtman.

Heartstrings Community Foundation has received many blessings over the years, but this year was extraordinary.

We added more new members to the Board of Directors than any other year! Five new members joined in 2014-2015, including Teri Butler-Jones of Novasors, Cory Davis of Philadelphia Insurance, Gavin Hull of The Grant Company, Roseann Sanders formerly of Terracon and Christie Schwermann formerly of Hallmark and various volunteer positions.

With this new energy and manpower we are tackling some big projects beginning with Strategic Planning. Each of the board members brings a unique skill set that adds new dimensions of strength to our organization. The Board of Directors provides vision for the organization, oversees the financial health of the organization and advocates for Heartstrings–including fundraising. We are very proud of these dedicated individuals and are looking forward to the exciting future ahead!

Sadly, we were informed of the imminent resignation of John Begley, which will be official in August 2015. John has been an extremely valuable asset to the Board, serving as the Treasurer for more years than we can remember! He has created a simple analytical tool to see the trends in the Heartstrings business units. With his resignation, we will have another board opening and hope that some of our readers will consider stepping into a position on our board or join one of our other committees. Board meetings usually meet every other month and last approximately

1½ hours; however, during this strategic planning project, we are meeting every month.

We are excited to welcome our five newest members to the Board; however, we hate to see John go. It’s with sincere gratitude that we accept his resignation after his many years of service to Heartstrings.

Events Designed to Benefit Charities

Rain and clouds could not dampen the fun of the Greater Kansas City Claims Association Golf Tournament at Hillcrest Golf Club. Todd Morris and his

team, along with Anne Hull, set up a display of Heartstrings at work and greeted hundreds of golfers and sponsors. The golfers seemed very happy to meet our Heartstrings’ employees and many were interested in becoming Goody Delivery and Custom Gift Basket customers.

This kind of event is extremely supportive of the Heartstrings model, as our employees meet new people and market their business. It is wonderful to see them in action, armed with their own business cards and marketing tools about Heartstrings. If you belong to a professional organization, we hope you will investigate the ways your organization might help Heartstrings. One of the most exciting moments of the day was when we spotted Frank White and had pictures taken with him!

Heartstrings will share the proceeds of this event with two other wonderful charities, Wounded Warrior Project and Cabins 4 Kids. Many thanks to the Greater Kansas City Claims Association for their support and friendship.

Triple Cart Sell-OutOur wonderful friends at Netsmart

purchased the contents of three Goody Delivery Carts to Pay It Forward to all of their associates! Netsmart handed out vouchers so each person could choose their treat on April 30. The Good Delivery Team enjoyed a wonderful afternoon interacting with every associate.

Netsmart also purchased several large gift baskets of candy for their locations outside of Overland Park. If your company would like to “purchase” a cart, please call the office at 913-649-5700. We will be happy to arrange it for you.

From the Heart of the Executive DirectorBunny Higgins MS, Executive Director

As I sit and write these words, I am overwhelmed by all that has taken place in the last 14 years.

Heartstrings Community Foundation has one foundational message: all people have value, all people have abilities and all people have purpose. We are dedicated to assist adults with I/DD in realizing their value, developing their abilities and finding their purpose. HCF has brought this message to the community and in turn transformed the community’s way of thinking.

Fourteen years ago we employed 2 people with I/DD, owned 1 business (Goody Delivery), partnered with 2 businesses and drove two donated vans. Today we employee 44 people with I/DD, own and operate 5 businesses (On My Own, On My Own Too, Goody Delivery, Sacks on Santa Fe, and Custom Gift Baskets) and we partner with over 100 businesses and own 12 mini-vans.

Behind the scenes is the HEARTBEAT. . .the staff. Fourteen years ago we had 2 full-time staff and 1 volunteer. Today we

have 11 full-time, 10 part-time, and 1 seasonal staff member along with 1 full-time volunteer and 2 part-time regular volunteers. We have a team of people that are dedicated to our core principals and who go the extra mile to make a difference in the world, not only for people with I/DD but for themselves. I am so very thankful for each and every one of them.

This is just a short summary of what has gone on here at Heartstrings. Now we are continuing our journey into the future. In the last 14 years, we have broken NEW ground for our employees. We BELIEVE in the foundational message and want to journey into the future providing this opportunity to more employees and more communities. Each year we have added new employees, staff, volunteers, businesses, donors and friends. So how about it? Do you want to come along for a ride that will help develop your abilities and give you value and purpose in life? Call and ask for Bunny (913) 649-5700; let’s talk.

Our Aging Fleet Needs Your Help

Do you monitor the mileage on your vehicles? Do you start considering the purchase of a new one once the

odometer hits 100,000 miles? Well then, you know how it feels to consider replacing an aging vehicle and working the payment into the budget. We are facing this situation now with a fleet of 12 minivans that range in age from 6 to 16 years. The average odometer on these vehicles is over 127,000 miles. Each week we provide over 500 employment-related trips around the metro. Our total monthly mileage exceeds 6,000 miles.

HCF utilizes over 25 paid staff members and 12 minivans to keep 40 plus employees with developmental disabilities active in the community. Our primary goal is to keep our employees engaged in vocational activities, which includes both training and paid endeavors. Goody Delivery is our largest and most visual employment program. The number of locations we provide tasty gourmet treats to continues to expand to an ever-growing number of appreciative businesses. Transporting our employees to our three retail locations, as well as providing transportation to those who have competitive community employment also happens on a daily basis; and, along the way we deliver our custom gift baskets.

When time permits, we also try to give back to the community by providing transportation to the elderly and the mobility-challenged via “Catch a Ride”; deliver meals to the homebound via “Meals on Wheels”; travel to local nursing homes to play games with residents; and conduct various education, fitness and recreational activities. Our weekly trips can easily reach 800 miles.

Over the years we have received 6 of our 12-van fleet via Kansas Department of Transportation Grants for a fraction of the total cost of the van. Now, due to new requirements and restrictions for grant applications, it is in our best interest not to apply for these grants in the foreseeable future. Most of our vehicles have outstanding repair needs due to age and usage. We have to “triage” the repairs that are most important. Of course, any issues that are safety related are addressed in a timely manner. As the fleet continues to age, this scenario will only get worse. We have at least two vans that should/need to be retired soon.

We are hoping some generous Heartstrings’ supporters will come through with funds for a newer used van. Please contact Gene Holland or Bunny Higgins if you are able to “steer” us toward a good used van!

Heartstrings Retail Locations are ready for Summer

We are grateful for the high quality donations that continue to roll in

the back door at a steady clip. The Work Room team stays busy processing new stock for each Heartstrings retail location. Marie and her team check The Antique Mall twice a week to be sure it is properly stocked and ready for business.

The Sacks On Santa Fe team has been busy switching stock to summer wear. Work Room teams are going full out to stay on top of the many generous dona-tions. “Filing” is a work in progress that has made stars of Rachel S. and Jenny, who can sort and locate bins at the speed of lightening; and, Adam and JD, our heavy lifters who rearrange bins on top shelves. Nickie, Rachel D., Zeke and others tag and size to keep the floor stock new and fresh.

Store front teams are continually on the move to keep our store looking its best. We have many “regulars” who visit the store on a weekly basis searching for treasures; so, we strive to have new merchandise available for them on each visit. Mannequins can change multiple times during the course of a day, so displays are a team effort. Allie, Felicia, Liz and Erin enjoy selecting the clothes, dressing and accessorizing them.

Our furniture sales are on the rise as well, which keeps us on our toes and requires constant rearranging. Each team member plays an important part in keeping the

store looking its best. Spencer is respon-sible for an earring display and works with Liz to keep men’s ties organized and well presented. David takes great pride in merchandising our supply of women’s scarves and has branched into floral displays. David, our color pro, has sold two arrangements in recent weeks. Rachel D. manages all tags used in the store, keeping us well stocked, while Scott and BK do the heavy lifting of furniture along with cleaning and dusting duties. Thanks to Peter, our best proofreader, all tags include the proper information for shoppers!

Downtown Overland Park is keeping the streets full of shoppers with a full season of activities. Wednesday and Saturday market dates now include concerts, cooking demonstrations for both adults and children and three movie nights have been added. See DowntownOP.org for details.

In the Metcalf 103 Center, On My Own has beautiful displays of furniture, garden décor, and décor for your home interior. Our clerks assist Dean, the store manager, with dusting and sweeping the store as well as arranging displays. Loretta, our Satur-day clerk, has regulars who come in every Saturday. Please stop in and say “Hi” to Dean, Loretta and our weekday clerks and take advantage of our weekly sales!

Come see us at one of our retail locations. You never know what treasures you will find!

The Heart in HeartstringsWritten by Mandy Henning, Retail Director

Giving is what makes the heart in Heartstrings beat. This heart beats

strong and pumps love into every person involved. There are a few people who have been giving for some years now and deserve much praise. My team and I know them as the family who owns and operates Sentimental Journey, the antique mall where On My Own Too resides. Every

week my team and I go to stock, clean and arrange the booth we so lovingly call #13 (for us that’s a lucky number).

When we walk in each week, we are welcomed by one of the family members, or if we are really lucky, all three of them. Randy and Carol are the mom and pop of this wonderful shop, and Amy is their

daughter. They welcome us with a smile and a big hello. The team beams with the special attention. Randy, Carol, and Amy are always so willing to offer a piece of advice on how to be more successful in our antique mall endeavor. They have helped us move furniture around, make sale signs and given hints of what will and will not be a big seller. They have graciously donated the booth for a number of years now. All the proceeds go straight to Heartstrings. We are so very blessed to have them in our lives. They deserve a great round of applause. Please make an effort to visit the fantastic family that is such a large part of the Heartstrings heart!
