Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) protects human rights and ensures access to justice for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. In the past year, we’ve had some remarkable accomplishments. With the hard work and expertise of 1,500 pro bono attorneys, NIJC provided 10,000 immigrants and their families access to legal counsel. We helped more than 3,000 children coming to the United States alone navigate the immigration system and filed a federal complaint on behalf of more than 100 children who were abused by U.S. border officials. We achieved landmark decisions recognizing gender-based asylum claims. We made strides in combating unlawful enforcement and the harmful Secure Communities program. Together with our partners and supporters, we continue to push for humane comprehensive immigration reform and action that would bring relief to millions of people living in our communities.
