“Even when I managed to hear her cry – the sweetest sound

in the world was her heartbeat.”

Andrea Wilson

Our journey through life follows many directions. Asked by a group of young teenage parents if I could record their story as a documentary I responded by asking: “What makes your story unique?” After hours of interviews I was left with a greater appreciation for parenting and the different paths we all go down to become a parent. The participants in the interviews share experiences that most of us would hope to avoid throughout our lifetime. These young parents have not only overcome adversity to get to where they are now but also have the added responsibility of parenting. Focusing on one interview from a collection taken over the past 12 months. I invite the viewer to immerse themselves in Andreas’ words, interpret them as their own and experience the end of a heartbeat. A sound that might be heard at the end of life not the beginning. Andrea shared one hour with her daughter Faith before her lungs collapsed and she stopped breathing.

“It literally does feel like a heartbeat in time,

one perfect moment, that one hour,

just one perfect moment.”

Andrea Wilson

The projected images depict an insight into the lives of young parents associated with the M.A.D group. Participants from the group have contributed to the making of the imagery through photographic workshops.

The images and interviews available on DVD talk about aspects of their lives that are not always easy to look at or listen too. Grief, domestic violence, drug addiction, post natal depression, mental illness, HSC, self esteem, peer pressure, debt, abandonment... just some of the obstacles this group of young people have tackled as young parents.

M.A.D runs for 35 minutes and has been cut together from over 40 hours of indepth interviews with participants from the M.A.D group.

M.A.D goes behind the scenes of parenting, the difficulties and adversity that has been overcome by each individual to get on the path to becomming a successful parent.

The M.A.D documentary was produced in partnership with the Southern General Practice Network and the South East Arts Region, funded by a Community Partnership Grant from the Australia Council for the Arts. It is available for purchase at the cost of $50 per DVD to cover the cost of production, please contact Rewa Nolan.

“You’ve got to be tough and realise the things that aren’t

good for you, you’ve got to get ‘em out of your life.”

Sheree O’Donnell

“Its like the hangover that doesn’t go away,

its going to be there for a long time.”
