Strokes, 2009's Phrazes for the Young , Rolling Stone described it as

"his version of Thom Yorke's The

Eraser ," a record featuring "guitars

submarined by wild-angled synths,

the Voidz –

Jeramy Gritter

together, they are ready to release an

incredibly eclectic new album, simply

titled Tyranny . The LP hits

stores Tuesday (and can be pre-

ordered at the Cult Records website),

"Tyranny has come in many forms

I never considered Casablancas to be a good

album writer - usually 2 or 3 great tracks per

album and a whole lot of filler. Same here -

"Sadness" is pretty incredibly awesome,

though, and the first two tracks are catchy.

This is the real Julian Casablancas that has

long been dying to come to surface but was

trapped within his obsession with rigidity.

Har d to say that this is better than Phrazes for

Young, which was fantastico. But this definitely

pushes the boundaries more, and I like it very

much. Still in the middle of the first couple of

listens. Lots of dissonance, which in other

bands I say "hmmmm" and respectfully decline

to give a 2nd listen. Not so with this album. I

can't think of more than one song on here that I

will decline to download, which is kind of

remarkable for an album as unorthodox as this.

My only wish is that Mr. C would have

extended the goodness that is M.A.D. for

another couple of minutes.

Listening to this gives me a First Impressions

vibe, but definitely darker and more intense. I

like that Julian decided to really focus on lyrics

for this album, but I think that they got

somewhat lost behind the heavy production. If

he really wants to elicit an emotional response

from his listeners, he needs his newfound

lyrical depth backed by Nick's singing guitar

and Fab's Carney-esque drum beats. Here's to

hoping for a new Strokes album reminiscent of

the perfect blend between Modern Vampires

and White Blood Cells.

different reasons. Even

if this is the "real" Julian,

I still love how sharp and

technical Phrazes is.

hope Tyranny is still

comedown machine is

weak. Contractual

obligation filler. Cant wait

for new Strokes which

should be on Cult

After first listen, Phrazes EASILY tops

Tyranny. Just seems a tad muddled. Different

isn't always good. Phrazes was clean, but got

messy when it wanted to. Tyranny is messy,

but cleans it up once in a while. Guess it just

depends what your preference is. More of a

clean pop, or messy electro-punk

I'm actually loving Tyranny right

now. But I know when Julian

first released 11th dimension, I

was totally surprised. When

Phrazes was released, it was

something totally new and

different. Yet it was easily

pallateable. I know Tyranny isMEANT to be complicated, but I

ust feel it wont have the staying

power Phrazes STILL has. And

while Phrazes never really

sounded like The Strokes,

Tyranny def has those

moments. Especially Dare I

Care(chorus guitar) and Where

No Eagles Fly(Juicebox-ish

bassline). Reguardless we alllove Julian. He's a true genius.
