    Introduction by Leigh Thomas

    The Wild Things

  • 1Theres One in All of Us.

If we were together in the same room, I would begin by reading a childrens story aloud, as I do so many days a week at the library where I work. The book I would read to you would be Maurice Sendaks well-known story of a young, restless boy sent to his bedroom without dinner, followed by his escape to a world filled with wild creatures from his own mind, and a bowl of hot soup from his mother awaiting his safe return.

A while back, when our church studied a sermon series on regret, I was surprised to find a band of wild creatures stirring in my own mind, urging me to enter into their land and wrestle with worries of beastly proportions; to stand face to face with honesty taller than forests.

While Maurice Sendaks illustrated monsters coincidentally resembled his extended relatives, my own Wild Things resembled a myriad of past disappointments and woulda coulda shouldas,

like a collection of bad dreams, but with sharp, yellow teeth. Why is it that even when we know God is more than capable of wiping our slate clean, it can still feel near impossible to forgive ourselves?

    Be still!-Max

  • 2Wild Things can be anything that lurk or linger on our conscience and become barriers to our sense of freedom were promised by our Redeemer.

Too many restless middle-of-the-nights finally told me I needed to face my Wild Things head on. For me, the starting point was to make a list, so I could name my Wild Things, look them in the eye, and like Max, tell them to be still. I thought back through the years and gave a code name to each major situation, disappointment, and failure that seemed to be haunting me: That 5th grade Identity Crisis; Mirror, Mirror; Picking the Wrong Team; Not Chosen for the Team; I Liked Him/He Liked Her; He Liked Me/I No Longer Liked Him At All, and so on.

Looking at my list, I asked myself: What do all these things have in common? I came up with a couple of answers: misunderstanding, and conditional love.

First, I realized that a lot of situations gone awry are often the result of miscommunication or a relational disconnect. This happens because were human and nobodys perfect, and sometimes tension is inevitable.

The other thing about humans is that we default to conditional love. Even as we try to be like Jesus, were prone to slip back to scales of judgment instead of grace. Many disappointments and feelings of failure are a result of this limited sense of love, because we all fall short.

So, where does this leave us? Despite the logic of mistakes, how do we get past them?

Maybe it takes a reminder to ourselves that Gods unconditional love is enough to cover us, even when its not immediately tangible. Maybe its reading a certain verse over and over until we begin to believe its promises more wholly. Maybe its setting some time aside to meditate, clearing out the other voices until we just hear Gods. Maybe its also a little bit Fake it til you make itif we begin to act like were not alone, well begin to feel less alone. Its possible that along the way, we may actually begin to see these Wild Things as good, even necessary creatures, for the growth they can bring out in us. And if we begin to act like creatures who are deeply forgiven, who are more than our mistakes, we can better lend out the kind of grace weve been given.

Ask yourself: What does it mean right now that I am loved unconditionally? What does it mean right now that God is greater than regret?

We all have Wild Things. What might happen if you dare to look them in the eye?

Its possible that along the way, we may actually begin to see these Wild Things as good, even necessary creatures, for the growth they can bring out in us.
