The Health Background

• Average lifespans are steadily increasing. Swindon has life expectancy of 78.4 years for men and 82.7 years for women

• Swindon has an ageing population – est. 29% increase in the over 75’s by 2020

• Britain has amongst the worst levels of obesity in the world.

• Smoking claims over 80,000 lives a year.

• 1.6 million people are dependent on alcohol.

• Poor mental health is estimated to be responsible for nearly a quarter of the overall burden of long-standing poor health.

• People in the poorest areas of Swindon can expect to live up to 7 years less than people in richer areas.

Major Health Trends

Cardiovascular Disease & Stroke• 961 people died as a result of a stroke (2002 – 2008)• 20% of these were under the age of 75

Coronary Heart Disease• 1,884 people died as a result of CHD (2002 – 2008)• 33.6% of these were under the age of 75

Cancer• 2,907 people died from cancer (2002 – 2008) • 50.9% of these were under the age of 75

Diabetes• 8,195 patients registered with diabetes

In Swindon:

Adult Obesity • Estimated to be 24.8% (the highest prevalence rate in the South

West)

Childhood Obesity• 9.4% of reception year pupils obese (plus 11.3% overweight)

(NCMP)• 16.7% of year 6 pupils obese (plus 16.1% overweight) (NCMP)• Highest in the most deprived wards

Physical activity - participation rates • 1 in 5 adults • 31% of school pupils (aged 14-15yrs)

• The main functions of the board are:

• To assess the needs of the local population and undertake the statutory joint strategic needs assessment (JSNA)

• To promote integration and partnership across areas, including through promoting joined up commissioning plans across NHS, social care and public health

• To support joint commissioning and pooled arrangements, where all parties agree this makes sense

• To develop a joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy
