Aroma Around The House The aroma of your home is an impression much more enduring than fixtures. It takes a heap of living to make a house a home. Essential oils are not about masking odors, but killing bad odors! They’re also a natural way to provide deeply rich and healing aromas, with infinite possibilities.

MISTING SPRAYS• GENERAL MISTING SPRAY:

Add 20 drops of your choice of essential oil. Favorites include: grapefruit, lemon, orange, scotch pine, protector/disinfectant blend, gratitude blend, dragon’s fire, finishing oil to 4 oz. distilled water in a blue cobalt glass or PET plastic spray bottle. Shake gently before each use.

• To create a calming environment or use on bed linens as an alternative to toxic room fresheners, mix 15-20 drops lavender, calm, still or palmarosa in 4 oz. distilled water in cobalt blue spray bottle. Shake vigorously and spray.

DIFFUSING• For a clean, well kept feeling, diffuse 15 drops of lemon, lime, orange or scotch pIne oil at a time.

• Diffuse several drops palmarosa or lavender oil 10 minutes per hour through the day to create an uplifting floral environment.

Bacteria Busters

Lots of bacteria are harbored on counters, in sponges, on computer keyboards and telephones, and all around the house. Most essential oils are antiseptic, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and there are no risks of using the oil around foods or family. PROTECTOR BACTERIA BUSTER RECIPES• Protector/disinfectant blend by itself is amazing. To create a spray for cleaning and disinfecting, add 25 - 30 drops protector/

disinfectant blend to 4 oz distilled water in a cobalt blue misting spray bottle. Shake gently and spray. Use it to wipe down cabinets, sinks, tubs, toilets, doorknobs, fixtures, etc. to protect from bacteria.

• For a bacteria busting solution for mopping floors, mix 20 - 25 drops protector/disinfectant blend with 2½ cups water, 2 tablespoons biodegradeable household soap. Add to mop bucket, use as desired.

• Diffuse protector/disinfectant blend to keep air clean and disinfected around your home.

ENVIRONMENTAL DISINFECTING• Misting a diaper pail and surrounding areas can generate a clean fresh smell in no time!

• For a non-toxic hand soap, add 12 drops per 8 oz. of biodegradeable household soap; shake well to evenly disperse throughout.

• Keep bottles of protector/disinfectant blend misting spray in the kitchen, in the bath, at your desk, in the car, and in your purse. You’ll find it indispensable for non-toxic benefits of powerfully disinfecting in any number of ways, including:

• Shopping cart handles and reusable shopping bags (which have recently been found to harbor E. coli/other food-borne bacteria)

• Office or home phones, desks, doorknobs, beds, couches, chairs

• Any other areas where bacteria are known to lurk.

• When traveling, carry a bottle of protector/disinfectant blend misting spray or lemon misting spray with you. Use it when flying to disinfect and spray trays, tables, arm rests, seat belts, or bathroom surfaces.

• When checking into a hotel room, spray air vents, bedspreads, bathrooms, desks, counter tops, remote controls and doorknobs.

Bathroom Sparkle SOFT SCRUB

Add baking soda into a wide mouth jar, add enough biodegradeable household soap, essential oil and vegetable glycerin to create a texture like frosting. Apply enough of the mixture as needed onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning bathtubs and sinks - it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit.

Note: the vegetable glycerin will help to keep the cleaner moist. Increase proportions and make a large batch, keeping it in each bath room, kitchen and other areas where convenience would help – or just make as much as you need at any one time.

SOFT TUB SCRUB • 1 cup baking soda• ¼ cup salt• 10 drops lemon or orange essential oil• 10 drops tea tree essential oilCombine all the ingredients well and store in an airtight container.

• ½ C baking soda• 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin• 5 - 10 drops essential oil of your choice• 2 tbsp biodegradeable household soap

CARPET RE-FRESH #1• 3/4 cup baking soda • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Combine baking soda with cornstarch (and a dry scent you prefer, like dehydrated lavender) to make an inexpensive carpet freshener.

CARPET RE-FRESH #2• 1 cup borax• 1 cup baking soda• 10 drops essential oil of choiceCombine and sprinkle on carpet as desired. Vacuum. Store in an airtight container.

DegreaserCITRUS DEGREASER• ½ cup lemon juice, ¼ cup baking soda, 5 to 10 drops lemon or orange essential oils

Drain Cleaning

BAKING SODA DRAIN CLEANER #1Use baking soda as a drain cleaner. Add up to a cup to the drain. Run a tiny bit of hot water. Let it stand for as long as overnight before flushing the drain with hot water. It will not work on completely blocked drains, but serves as a prevention method. BAKING SODA DRAIN CLEANER #2If water hasn’t yet backed up in your drain but you can tell it’s slowing down, pour 1 cup of baking soda followed by 3 cups of boiling water. The boiling water will change the chemical composition of baking soda, making it more alkaline. Repeat a few times until the drain is clear.

BAKING SODA BUBBLING METHOD USING VINEGAR #3Baking soda and vinegar react with each other to cause bubbles and fizzing. (Remember your 5th grade volcano experiment!) Sometimes the fizzing can dislodge clogs. Follow the baking soda and boiling water formula, above, with 1 cup of vinegar.

ENZYME DRAIN AND GARBAGE DISPOSAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE All natural living enzyme culture drain cleaners will actually eat and break down any organic matter. Using enzyme drain cleaners once a month, such as Bi-O-Kleen’s Bacout, will help not just your drains, but your septic system. They will also significantly reduce odor from garbage disposals. Colonies of enzymes will actually continue to grow and break down organic matter in your drains .

WASHING SODA MAINTENANCE Enzymes don’t work as well on hair clogs, so to keep drains clear that tend to collect hair, such as in the shower and bath, pour 1 cup of washing soda followed by a thorough flushing of water. Use this protocol several times a month. Write it on your calendar to do the maintenance flush every other Saturday for example.

WASHING SODA DRAIN CLEANERIf the water isn’t going down the drain, pour a cup of washing soda over the drain area and let it set for a while to work its way down to the clog. Once the clog is loosened, use the Baking Soda #2 Method, above. Washing soda is more alkaline than baking soda, with a pH of 11.

NOTE: Never use washing soda if a commercial acid drain cleaner has recently been used in the drain, as they will strongly react with each other. Don’t overuse washing soda if you have PVC pipes, as the caustic nature of washing soda can slowly damage the plastic.

Floors That ShineFOREST FRESH WOOD & VINYL FLOOR CLEANER• Add 10 - 20 drops of scotch pine or balsam fir essential oil in the mop bucket when cleaning floors and wood around the house.

CITRUS FLOOR CLEANER • 1 gallon hot water • 2 tablespoons biodegradeable household soap• 15 drops orange, pink grapefruit, lemon essential oil

Blend all ingredients in bucket. Mop floor as usual.

FLORAL FLOOR CLEANER • 1 gallon hot water • 2 tablespoons biodegradeable household soap• 10 - 20 drops essential oil of choice: palmarosa or essential oil of choice

Blend all ingredients in bucket. Mop floor as usual.

NOTE: Contrast the health benefits of the above recipes with the fact that 1 gallon of PineSol has enough phenol to kill an adult 3 times over! Phenol is oily, so believe it or not, it’s easily absorbed through the feet after mopping, etc. The residue hangs around, is absorbed through your skin, and is especially bad if you’re using it without gloves, as your hands will instantly absorb the toxins.

Dust Away Spray

DUST SPRAY

Combine in a spray bottle. Use with a soft cotton cloth to dust and spruce up your home.

See Furniture Care for more dusting suggestions.

Furnace Filter & Air Refreshener

Place 10 - 20 drops of protector/disinfectant blend on filters to avoid ‘sick building syndrome’. If you’re using a wood stove, pull out your humidifier and add a few drops of protector/disinfectant blend to it.

Glass & Window Cleaner - Sparkling Clean!WINDOW CLEANER

Add each of the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake gently, and use as you would a commercial brand.

NOTE: The little bit of biodegradeable household soap is important. It cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you might have used in the past, and adds an element of viscosity to the cleaner.

Using newsprint newspaper instead of paper towels actually will cut grease and add an additional element of sparkle to the glass that’s being cleaned.

Mold & Fungus Eradicator

Kill mold without killing yourself! This is one of the most effective home care products I know of – and all without worry about inhaling fumes or absorbing toxins through the skin. In my opinion, nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as essential oil sprays. It has successfully been used on a moldy ceilings from leaky roof, on musty bureaus, on musty rugs, and moldy shower curtains.

FUNGUS & MOLD PREVENTION• For fungus and mold prevention, mix 40 drops of tea tree essential oil in a blue cobalt spray bottle with 1/2 cup distilled water.

Shake well before use.

MOLD KILLER SPRAY #1

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes 2 cups.

MOLD KILLER SPRAY #2

Spray on area, and let it sit without rinsing. The vinegar smell will dissipate in a few hours as the vinegar evaporates.

MOLD KILLER SPRAY #3• Use 30 - 40 drops protector/disinfectant blend mixed with 4 oz distilled water. Use as a misting spray on surfaces where

mold or fungus are growing.

MOLD KILLER FOR LARGE AREAS• Diffuse protector/disinfectant blend in larger areas where mold or fungus have ‘taken hold.’

• 2 teaspoons tea tree essential oil• 10 drops lemon essential oil• 2 cups water

• 10 - 20 drops orange essential oil• Spray bottle full of white distilled vinegar

Oven Cleaners That Pack A Punch!OVEN CLEANER #1

Combine ingredients and mix until smooth. Apply with a cloth and wipe clean.

OVEN CLEANER #2

Sprinkle water mixed with orange essential oil, generously over the bottom of the oven, then cover the grime with enough baking soda that the surface it totally white. Sprinkle some more water over the top, then let the mixture set overnight.

You can easily wipe up the grease the next morning because the grime will have loosened. When you have cleaned up the worst of the mess, dab a bit of liquid detergent or soap on a sponge along with several drops of orange essential oil, and wash the remaining residue from the oven. If this recipe doesn’t work for you it is probably because you didn’t use enough baking soda and/or water.

• 1 cup or more baking soda• 10 – 15 drops orange essential oil • A squirt or two of biodegradeable household soap

• 1 small box baking soda• 1 cup liquid biodegradeable household soap• 12 - 15 drops orange essential oil

Silver Polishing Without Toxins

EASY SILVER CLEANER #1Rather than purchasing and using toxic silver tarnish removers, simply get some toothpaste for the job.
