Thank you for supporting Civic Works

you are making a tangible difference for 15,000 of our neighbors in baltimore. We all need nutritious food, clean air and water, and a safe environment to survive and thrive. For too long, that has not been a reality for many in Baltimore. But because of you, more people have access to healthy food & green Communities.

Projects like Real Food Farm’s Mobile Farmer’s Market (p. 5) and the rain gardens being built by the Community Lot Team and Baltimore Orchard Project (p. 7) are helping people access and enjoy a cleaner, greener, and healthier Baltimore. These projects breathe excitement into communities that now see what is possible and feel empowered to make their own positive stamp on our city.

One of the ways this is most evident is through the words of the young people who give their time to serve Baltimore as AmeriCorps members at Civic Works. For young people like Anitra (p. 12), who served as an AmeriCorps member at REACH! Partnership School mentoring high school students, they seek to build brighter futures for themselves while uplifting and inspiring others. Others feel a passion to ensure that everyone has access to safe & affordable homes, like Tashawn, who chose an AmeriCorps term with Cities for All Ages to make sure that older adults like his grandfather have access to the resources they need to live safely and comfortably at home.

Together, we’re creating a city where everyone feels empowered to Dream More, Do More, B’More.

Almost a third of children in Baltimore City live in

areas with limited access to healthy food. Your support

of Real Food Farm brings local produce and nutrition

education to schools, WIC facilities, and community

centers that serve families.

1 in 4 baltimore City residents live in a food desert.

Too many of our neighbors live in areas with limited access to healthy fruits and vegetables. That’s especially true for West Baltimore residents, where entire neighborhoods– including Park Heights, Reservoir Hill, Coppin Heights, Sandtown Winchester, Penn north, Druid Heights, and Harlem Park– have no supermarkets and few sources of healthy food.

n May 2017, we launched a second Mobile Farmers’ Market, this time focused on ten neighborhoods in West Baltimore. Through our Mobile Market, communities without brick and mortar grocery stores gain access to affordable, nutritious and locally grown produce through stops at community centers, Women, infant & Children (WiC) facilities, schools, and senior centers.

Low-income families receiving Supplemental nutrition Assistance Program (SnAP) benefits are able to get more for their money, thanks to the Double Dollars program through the Farm Alliance of Baltimore. Because of this program, families receive double the amount of healthy food for their families, without doubling the cost.

Thanks to the expansion of our Mobile Farmers’ Market, almost 300 families living in East and West Baltimore have convenient access to a source of healthy food, free nutrition education workshops, and a chance to double their dollars with more healthy food.

In 2017, 44% of mobile market sales were made to families utilizing snap benefits and over $4,500 in produce was provided to snap

families through the double dollars program.

because of you, the abell foundation and T. Rowe price, our West baltimore mobile farmers’ market is taking fresh and affordable food

straight to the neighborhoods that need it the most.

you might not wouldn’t recognize a rain garden if you saw one. Rain gardens look like any other garden, full of flowers, trees and shrubs— but there’s one thing that makes rain gardens special: they are designed to keep pollutants from entering our waterways.

in a city like Baltimore, there are a lot of impervious surfaces like rooftops, sidewalks and roads, which prevent rainwater from being absorbed into the ground. instead, rainwater flows along impervious surfaces (picking up pollutants like gasoline, pesticides and pet waste) until it finds a storm drain. From there, rainwater flows into the Chesapeake Bay, taking with it the pollutants it picked up along the way.

With help from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Environmental Protection Agency, the national Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the Baltimore Office of Sustainability and Department of Public Works, Civic Works’ Community Lot Team and Baltimore Orchard Project are turning some of Baltimore’s vacant lots into first line defenders of the Chesapeake Bay.

Rain gardens help prevent pollution from ever making it into the Bay by diverting rainwater into planted spaces that allow groundwater to collect for a short time before being absorbed by the ground. The plants in the garden help to break down pollutants, and other, longer lasting pollutants remain in the soil to break down over time.

AmeriCorps members with the Community Lot Team and Baltimore Orchard Project take pride in creating these community green spaces. For Wayne Bouldin, a Community Lot Team member, seeing the transformation at 400 n. Duncan Street from an abandoned lot into a rain garden made the project one of his favorites. So remember the next time you pass a vacant lot turned urban paradise– it just might be protecting the Bay!

With your support, in 2017 Civic Works’ Community Lot

Team transformed nine vacant lots throughout Baltimore

into urban oases, creating rain gardens, community gathering

spaces, and providing safe places to play. Together, we’re

creating a more beautiful Baltimore!

Rain gardens have a special power: they keep the Chesapeake bay healthy

stormwater runoff is the fastest growing source of pollution to the Chesapeake bay.

“When we finished the project there weren’t any needles or glass... This project was one of my favorites because I worked my hardest and saw a big

change.” – Wayne

“my terms at ameriCorps have been a great life experience! not only are you helping yourself but you are also helping a variety of different people at the same time. I would encourage everyone that wants to help make a difference in the community and their city take part in an ameriCorps program.” — anitra patrick, 2017 Corpsmember of the year

In 2017, Civic Works hosted 229 ameriCorps members dedicated to serving their communities. our Corpsmember of the year, anitra patrick has made a tre-mendous impact on students at the ReaCh! partnership school by encouraging a culture in which students feel empowered to lift each other up. she can of-ten be heard telling her students, “If one of us falls, we all fall.”
