National Association of Counties Healthy Counties Initiative The Naonal Associaon of Counes (NACo) has launched a Healthy Counes Iniave in 2011 to enhance public/private part- nerships in local health delivery, improve individual and community health, and assist counes to effecvely implement federal health reform. The NACo Healthy Counes Iniave will engage county of- ficials and private sector partners across the country to: • Take a leadership role in implemenng health reform at the coun- ty level; • Enhance coverage, access to and coordinaon of health care for vulnerable populaons in the community, including health servic- es in hospitals, community health centers and county jails, while focusing on cost-containment strategies; • Promote community public health, prevenon and wellness pro- grams, including increased physical acvity and healthy eang; • Parcipate in the naonal transion to health informaon tech- nology and telemedicine; and • Offer informaon, ideas and soluons for county government employee and reree health benefits and programs. NACo’s Healthy Counes Iniave directly complements NACo’s First Vice President and incoming 2011 NACo President Lenny Elia- son’s (Athens County, OH) selected presidenal iniave. As NACo President, Commissioner Eliason will focus on helping counes cre- ate and maintain healthy communies by providing counes with tools to promote healthy lifestyles and develop local policies and programs that support community health. 2011 Planned Activities NACo’s Healthy Counes Iniave is guided by the Healthy Coun- es Advisory Board, which is comprised of county officials and staff who are health leaders at NACo and corporate partners. The public/private Healthy Counes Advisory Board will assist NACo in indenfying the priories and acvies of the Healthy Counes Ini- ave and will provide input and experse on program implemen- taon. Currently planned acvies for 2011 include: • Webpage A Healthy Counes Iniave webpage, www.naco. org/healthycounesiniave, has been developed on the NACo website, which includes a database of county health best prac- ces and programs that will be enhanced and updated. The web- page will also be a plaorm to feature the iniave’s publicaons, resources, webinar recordings and training opportunies. • Workshops NACo staff will work with the Healthy Counes Ad- visory Board to idenfy mely informaon and knowledgeable speakers to present at NACo conferences. • Webinar Series The Healthy Counes Iniave will conduct we- binars highlighng health issues, concerns and opportunies for counes, such as health IT, food access, jail health services, public health prevenon and wellness iniaves, employee health cov- erage and wellness iniaves, or others idenfied by the Healthy Counes Advisory Board. • Educaonal Forum NACo will conduct a Healthy Counes forum which will feature workshop sessions on topics of im- portance and priority to counes in creang and maintaining healthy communies. Healthy Counties Initiative

The National Association of Counties (NACo) has launched a Healthy Counties Initiative in 2011 to enhance public/private part-nerships in local health delivery, improve individual and community health, and assist counties to effectively implement federal health reform. The NACo Healthy Counties Initiative will engage county of-ficials and private sector partners across the country to:

• Take a leadership role in implementing health reform at the coun-ty level;

• Promote community public health, prevention and wellness pro-grams, including increased physical activity and healthy eating;

• Participate in the national transition to health information tech-nology and telemedicine; and

• Webpage – A Healthy Counties Initiative webpage, www.naco.org/healthycountiesinitiative, has been developed on the NACo website, which includes a database of county health best prac-tices and programs that will be enhanced and updated. The web-page will also be a platform to feature the initiative’s publications, resources, webinar recordings and training opportunities.

• Workshops – NACo staff will work with the Healthy Counties Ad-visory Board to identify timely information and knowledgeable speakers to present at NACo conferences.

• Webinar Series – The Healthy Counties Initiative will conduct we-binars highlighting health issues, concerns and opportunities for counties, such as health IT, food access, jail health services, public health prevention and wellness initiatives, employee health cov-erage and wellness initiatives, or others identified by the Healthy Counties Advisory Board.

• Educational Forum – NACo will conduct a Healthy Counties forum which will feature workshop sessions on topics of im-portance and priority to counties in creating and maintaining healthy communities.
