HEALTHIER & HAPPIER

In this issue we realise that small changes

can bring big results especially when the

goal is to be healthier and happier.

There are so many inspirational things we can

do. Just slightly modifying your diet can make

a huge difference to the way you feel. Changing

your work-out routine, falling asleep faster,

creating harmonious relationships and moving

from surviving to thriving are some of the

topics covered. Alongside LIVING LIFE WELL we

believe you can lead a healthy life without sacrifice or deprivation. If you can’t

let go of pizza, try our raw or wheat free version. If you love coffee, have it in

moderation and make sure it’s organic. It’s all about perspective and balance. We

can all lose the plot sometimes and binge eat, we’re human – we cover how to

get back on track afterwards. Jayshree Mannie gets us to look at how frenetic

our world has become and gives us tips on how to be peaceful in such a crazy

world. We also celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight with products that value people

and highlight eco principles. Join us in this issue filled with new information and

practical tips as we head towards a healthier and happier existence.

OUR FAVOURITE QUOTES FOR THE MONTH

“As a people, we have become obsessed with Health. There is something fundamentally, radically unhealthy about all this. We do not seem to be seeking more exuberance in living as much as staving off failure, putting off dying. We have lost all confidence in the human body.” Lewis Thomas “I am convinced that unconditional love is the most powerful known stimulant of the immune system. If I told patients to raise their blood levels of immune globulins or killer T cells, no one would know how. But if I can teach them to love themselves and others fully, the same changes happen automatically. The truth is: love heals.” Bernie Siegel

Share a Sip Of Red This gorgeous ruby red has a bounty of berries and intense fruit melds with white pepper flavours. It smells of dark pepper, plum and mulberry with traces of wood spice. Although it’s recommended to pair with smoked or cured meats, sirloin, lamb, venison or blue cheese, my favourite is to have it with dark chocolate. Place in the Sun is a new range of wines by Zonnebloem. They’re registered under the Fair Label Organisation (FLO) Standards that form part of Fairtrade. Place In the Sun Shiraz R59,99

Settle Down With Some Tea I know Pukka tea is quite pricey but they just seem to get it so right. There is nothing more satisfying than a cup of their tea. For me, that’s pure happiness. This breakfast variety has been hand picked from the wild Nam Lanh tea plantation by the tribes’ people of the Vietnamese rainforest. It’s organic and Fairtrade. Pukka breakfast tea R85

Hydrate Your DayI find these tablets really useful to add to my water during the day. They dissolve into the water and make a pleasant tasting drink. They’re specially designed to hydrate and have no added sugar but are filled with vitamins

and minerals. Hydration is so important to health and energy levels. In fact, dehydration is the number one trigger of daytime fatigue. Nuun also do an energy version with caffeine but if you’re sensitive to caffeine, be aware. Nuun All Day comes in 4 flavours: Grapefruit Orange, Tangerine Lime, Blueberry Pomegranate, and Grape Raspberry. NUUN all day hydration tablets R94,99

Satisfy a Snack Attack Well done to Life Bake for making grain-free low-carb toast that tastes so satisfying! It’s the perfect snack; it doesn’t crumble and has all the credentials a healthy food is looking for. It’s free from GMO’s, sugar, yeast, preservative and has lots of fibre and Omega-3’s. Another favourite of mine is their Grain-Free Granola. It has lots of seeds like flax, pumpkin, sunflower with psyllium husk,

coconut flakes, cinnamon and rock salt and is completely delicious with yoghurt. LIFEBAKE grain free granola R81,99 + grain free toast R49,99

PractiseGratitude One of the best ways to add more happiness to life is the practice of gratitude. These prayer beads help you in your practice with a special meditation. Use them to acknowledge things you are grateful for or meditate on the affirmation provided. ‘Thank you for everything I have and everything I am. Thank you for my possibilities and my potential, for my awareness and love, for grace and strength, and my rich abundance. Thank you for my experiences and the ability to assimilate them with dignity.’ Prayer Beads Gratitude R260

Savour Rich Chocolate Raw Dream handcraft the most delicious chocolate and use natural ingredients like raw cacao, Almonds, Cashew, Goji Berries, Agave, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Ginger and Nutmeg. Raw Cacao has lots of benefits but the one I love is its mood enhancing capacity. Their chocolates are prepared below 45 degrees Celsius, which means all the valuable mineral content is kept intact. I’m crazy about the cashew and coconut cream variety. Raw dream cashew and coconut cream chocolate R28,99

helping you live life well

The Victorian Garden has a unique history dating back to the Victorian era. This was a time when ladies hand-made their own moisturising creams, lotions and bath oils using herbs and flower extracts grown in their gardens. Many of them added beeswax from the apiaries common in middle and upper class properties. Our company uses traditional vintage recipes. Some of these were first crafted for the Tudor Queen’s of England in the 16th Century and others are traditional Victorian recipes from the 19th Century. From these recipes, we manufacture hand-crafted skin, body and hair care products.

MEET OUR SUPPLIER

THE VICTORIAN GARDEN

Achieving a flawless complexion, like those famously had by woman in the Victorian era, is possible in today’s age. Through professional formulations and skillfull use of essential oils, our skincare products are able to rebalance skin, allowing it to regenerate and repair with long term results.

14

healthy foodmarketeatwell

Page 15: Healthier & happier

The Company owes its existence to Lady Frances Glover-Anderson

(she is the great grandmother of the company’s founder, Lindsay Salthouse). Lady Frances was an aristocratic Victorian lady and renowned herbalist who created skincare products using beeswax, rosewater and infusions of organic herbs and flowers from essential oils and her extensive herb garden. Two meticulously kept diaries handwritten in flowing script were passed down through her family. They both give fascinating descriptions of daily life in the 1800’s and list favourite recipes for skin creams, body lotions and bath oils popular with Victorian ladies. Our vintage Rose and Pelargonium Hand Cream recipe dates to 1860 and was made especially for the Ladies in Waiting at Queen Victoria’s court.

In Victorian times, making beauty products entailed gathering and preparing fresh herbs and flower extracts. These were then infused and combined with oils, rosewater and beehive by-products like honey, beeswax and propolis. The waxes were melted and stirred over a double boiler.

After many years experimenting with Victorian recipes using old fashioned methods, we now manufacture around 200 unusual and effective skin, body, bath and hair products. All of these strictly comply with international Health and Safety standards and the new S.A. Consumer Protection Act. We are also registered with the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association of South Africa and are proud to be certified by international anti-cruelty organisation, Leaping Bunny.

We’re very much a 21st century company. We care deeply about the environment, animal welfare, and the damage being done to our bodies and our planet by all the chemicals in today’s skincare products. Although we are far from being a large corporate style company, we’re passionate about our work. We remain committed to ensuring that we create and maintain exceptional quality products that are healthy, safe and a joy to use. Most importantly, we make sure they are affordable. We are always on the look-out for new ingredients from nature to improve the quality and effectiveness of our products, using modern knowledge

and science to create the very best natural skincare products for our customers.

This year, 2015 marks the launch of our newly upgraded face creams. Our Dry Skin formulas now contain Bitter Orange extract and Maca Root for ageing skin. Bitter Orange deeply hydrates the skin, increasing the production of Hyaluronic Acid by the cells for extensive moisturising while Maca Root enhances skin firmness by improving cohesion between the cells. These powerful new additions help maintain a firmer, plumper skin. Our formulations for normal/combination and oily/problem skins have been boosted with the addition of the highly acclaimed ‘Dragon’s Blood’, a botanical extract shown to rejuvenate the skin and prevent signs of aging. It also protects against wind, cold, dry air and pollution. Dragon’s Blood regenerates the epidermis for skin renewal.

VICTORIA GARDEN VALUES AND PRINCIPLES:

• We are certified by international anti-cruelty organisation, Leaping Bunny. We do not allow animal testing at any stage of our supply chain.

• All our products are biodegradable and sustainable produced with love and respect for the earth.

• We’re focused on using as near 100% certified organic and natural ingredients as possible.

• We use herbal and floral extracts popular during the Victorian era as well as African plant oils and ‘heirloom’ plant extracts used in the Tudor courts.

• Skincare ranges are available for Dry, Normal/Combination, Oily/Problem and Sensitive skins.

• From field to face we control our entire operation; we select the highest quality ingredients and work to minimise marketing costs so we can offer a world class quality collection at affordable prices.

Make up a completely delicious pizza that also happens to be

very healthy. This pizza guideline fits the category of raw, Banting and gluten free. It might seem a bit complicated at first but each component can be used on its own as a sauce, pesto or cheese spread. You can also make the crust in one sitting and do the toppings when you’re ready. You’ll need a dehydrator and extra time for soaking, marinating and sprouting. Sprouting seeds becomes part of daily life when you’re on a raw food diet. Once you set up a sprouting routine you can time your seeds so that you always have a new supply on the go.

This recipe has been adapted from www.rawmazing.com

RAW MUSHROOM PIZZAServes 6 to 8 people

1. Sprout your buckwheat by soaking one cup overnight in water. Then drain the water and rinse the seeds. Keep them moist and rinse them about 3 times a day. Soon little tails will sprout, when they’re as long as the length of the seed, they’re ready to use. This should take about 2 days.

2. Process the buckwheat and olive oil until you have a mash.

3. Add the walnuts and keeping pulsing until they’re well blended.

4. Add the carrots, and Italian spices, and mix well.

5. Mould into squares or circles depending on how you want your pizza to look. Dehydrate at 60 degrees Celsius for 45 minutes. Then turn the dehydrator down to 45 degrees Celsius and dehydrate until the tops are dry. Check them and carry on dehydrating until they’re soft, not too brittle.

did you know?Buckwheat is not a cereal grain, it’s a fruit seed related to rhubarb and sorrel. This makes it a good substitute for people sensitive to wheat, or grains with protein glutens.

2. Whisk together, olive oil, Braggs Aminos and maple syrup.3. Pour this over the mushroom and onion mix. Roll the jar

This Raw Nut Loaf is just another example of how blending, mixing

and combining raw food can make up a delicious and satisfying meal. Once you’ve served this over greens you can always add a sauce or drizzle some tahini over it.

Serves: 5 portionsPrep time: 10 minutes

Mix all the ingredients together well. The ratio of dry and moist components will give you a firm consistency that’s easy to shape into a loaf. You can serve it straight away or put it in the fridge to solidify slightly. Serve over mixed greens.

With so much chocolate around at Easter time temptation is rife.

Before you succumb to sugar laden goodies, make up a batch of healthy chocolate eggs and treat your body with goodness. Make extra, adorn them with decorative ribbons and give them away as Easter treats. Here’s a raw vegan Easter egg recipe so close to the real thing you’ll feel like you’ve had your fix.

Raw Vegan Chocolate Easter Eggs To make an authentic egg shape, find some oval (half egg-shaped) silicone or plastic molds. You can usually find these at a hobby or baking shop. If not, you can also use ice trays with rounded indents but then obviously your treats won’t be in the shape of an egg. This recipe has a chocolate outer layer and truffle like filling.

Prep time: 12 MinutesMakes 16-20 smallish eggs

1. Put your empty mold or ice tray in the freezer.

2. Use a food processor to blend all the ingredients for the filling together and set aside in a bowl.

3. Do the same for the coating and put in a different bowl.

4. Take your molds out the freezer and spoon half a tablespoon of the coating mixture around the mold covering the bottom and sides evenly.

5. Put them back in the freezer for 5 minutes.

6. After 5 minutes take the molds out the freezer and fill them with the filling mixture. Once they’ve frozen for about 2 to 3 hours you can use a bit of the coating to fix the two halves together. You’ll then have a full egg shape with a small seam. You can keep them in the fridge after that but try not to store them in too high a temperature or they’ll get a little soft.

did you know?Regular table sugar and high fructose corn syrup have no vital nutrients and amount to ‘empty’ calories. If you’ve just eaten all the ice-cream in the freezer, a bar of chocolate and a

piece of cake as well, here’s how to get back on track.

1. Get over it, forgive yourself and move on. Often a binge creates a brand of disappointment that fuels a defeatist attitude. Cut it out and start from where you are right now.

2. Do a pantry audit – pack up all the unhealthy food and redistribute it or throw it out.

3. Avoid the temptation to swing in the other direction and starve yourself. This is just likely to set you up for another binge. Eat a small breakfast. If you’re feeling bloated have some berries or otherwise eat some protein – a boiled egg is also good.

4. Set a time period with a goal in mind. If it’s been a week of bingeing, set yourself a 3-week period to get back on track. Make a plan. This could include adding an extra exercise day and eating a very light dinner much earlier than usual.

5. Resolve to keep a food journal for a week. Most people don’t realise how much they actually eat in between meals or informally. Logging your food intake is a proven way to eat more mindfully.

6. Make a deal with yourself that when you feel hungry, first drink a glass of water and wait five minutes. Sometimes hunger is actually thirst.

7. If you have an impulse to binge, move the impulse to your stomach and into your body and see if it’s your body talking or your mind. Our hunger cues should come from our bodies, not from our minds.

8. Don’t let yourself get too hungry, that could be a trigger to binge. Eat something small every few hours, even if it’s a green drink or a piece of fruit.

9. Brush your teeth after a meal if that helps you stop eating when you should stop.

10. Post a message to yourself on the fridge. Even if it feels a bit silly, just do it. Something like, “I have the ability to control what I eat”.

11. Eat the right food. Apparently eating monosaturated fatty acids can help fight belly fat, these are found in nuts, seeds, olive oil, high cacao chocolate and olives. Eat them in moderation though.

12. Chew each mouthful 100 times and eat slowly. Your body will absorb more nutrients this way and you’ll get a more accurate message as to when you are full.

13. Aim to eat until you are three quarters full, not completely full.

14. Find rewards that don’t involve food but that feel nourishing – smell a great fragrance, take a bath, have a massage, read a book you love.

As we move into autumn, it’s normal to feel like warming, comfort foods instead of healthier choices. But did you know that, besides making you pack on the pounds and feel sluggish, some of your favourite meals may actually disagree with your body’s makeup? Dr Vassen, a medical doctor who specialises in integrated medicine, unpacks the Ayurvedic approach to healthy eating in a way that fuels and energises. It’s all about letting food be your medicine.

IN TUNE WITH NATURE

Our bodies change with the seasons. In Ayurveda, each season has its own element and this can be more or less compatible with your body, dependent on your unique dosha (makeup). The more suited you are to your season, the better you’ll feel at the time.

The elements are known in Sanskrit as ‘vata’ (wind), ‘pitta’ (fire) and ‘kapha’ (earth). Each person has a combination of these elements but one or two tend to be dominant. If you’re a ‘vata person’ for example, you’re likely to be thin, light, enthusiastic and flexible. Predominantly

pitta people tend to be intense, intelligent and goal-oriented. The ‘kapha person’ is easygoing, methodical and nurturing.

According to Ayurveda, the human form extends beyond the physical. We’re more than our minds and our bodies. This ancient form of medicine is truly holistic, and believes in balancing the body with its environment – which is, in a sense, an ‘extended body’.

WINTER BLUES

From mid-autumn to winter, vata predominates. This means a sensation of cold, dryness and restlessness increase as our internal ‘vata’ reacts to the change in season. In the body and mind, symptoms of being out of sync with the season include joint and muscle twinges, feeling mentally or emotionally restless, an imbalanced immune system, allergies, weak digestion and absorption of food, headaches, sleep disturbances, dry airways and dry skin.

SWITCH THINGS UP

The secret to wellness every season, in the Ayurvedic tradition, lies in routine. In the vata seasons, in particular, it’s important

to get enough sleep – every night. If you’re not feeling well, avoiding cold drinks and foods is recommended, as is eating more healthy fats. Cold-pressed organic oils like coconut, olive, and nut oils help keep the body in balance. Eat healthy carbohydrates and, if you can eat grains, include them in your diet. Start every day with a cup of ginger tea and use more herbs and spices that help with digestion.

GOING VEGGIE

Vegetables are low in calories and fats but have ample vitamins and minerals. Eat vegetables and you can expect rich amounts of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, vitamin B-complex, vitamin-C, vitamin-A, and vitamin K.

Cape Town foodie and blogger Candice Bresler believes in finding

the balance between ‘healthy’ and ‘delicious’. After a recent lifestyle change, which included becoming vegetarian and starting a running regime, Candice has restyled her already beautiful blog and started focusing on living, eating, moving, drinking, and loving better. By the looks of things – as you’ll see in the easy and super yummy dishes she shares here – she’s getting it right.

On becoming vegetarian

Learn to understand food – understand why you are eating each and every food component. You are your body’s own personal chemist and can feed it whatever it needs at that given moment.

A very personal decision

The transition to vegetarianism is a big move, which Candice says happened after a ‘lightbulb moment’. She sees herself as being on a very personal journey towards wellness that suits her own body and her own beliefs. At the same time, she doesn’t believe in being prescriptive. Candice offers us a glimpse into her kitchen with recipes that are as good for banters, paleos and LFHC eaters as they are for vegans and vegetarians. Her chia breakfast pudding as well as her courgette, pea, feta and mint fritters fit all the above eating plans.

Chia Breakfast Pudding

This breakfast is so delicious Candice calls it a pudding. It’s also vegan and grain-free.

2. Seal tightly and place in the fridge overnight. Enjoy in the morning topped with a selection of fruit, nuts and seeds – it’s also delicious with a sprinkling of coconut blossom sugar.

Courgette, pea, feta and mint fritters

These more-ish fritters are a great way to get little ones to eat their veggies. They’re a huge hit with grownups. This recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free.

3. To make the batter, put the coconut flour and eggs into a bowl. Start stirring with a wooden spoon, adding the milk slowly until a smooth batter forms.

4. Add the peas, courgettes, feta, mint and spring onion to the batter.

5. Place the remaining tablespoon of coconut oil in the same frying pan.

6. Put a heaped tablespoon of the batter in the frying pan and cook for about 3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining batter.

Breakfast WithThe Banting Blondes

By Roxane Hayward

Your journey to being a healthier and happier you starts from the

moment you wake up – wake up a bit earlier say the Banting Blondes, and prepare a nourishing breakfast that powers up your day. Here’s how.

• Remember this: Breakfast should be the biggest meal of your day.

• When you change over to Banting you’ll find you only need two meals a day. Eating this way increases the body’s response to insulin, which regulates blood sugar and helps control hunger, food cravings and slows down fat production.

• If you need an afternoon snack, have a high fat one (like a bulletproof coffee for energy) or, even better, a high nutrient green veggie juice. If your body is experiencing cravings, it is usually because it wants nutrients, a green

juice helps curb cravings. So swap your chocolate bar for some kale.

• Eat breakfast as soon as you wake up. Don’t wait too long. This gives you boundless energy and sets you up for your day.

• Fat is key. It keeps you sustained and feeling full for longer.

• Micronutrients are also highly important. Your body stays fuller for longer on a micronutrient-rich breakfast from green leafy vegetables. So yes, eat the fat, but have steamed spinach, broccoli or avocado on the side.

PRESSED FOR TIME? Here are some super quick and easy ideas, you can find recipes for all these items on www.facebook.com/thebantingblondes.

Yoghurt Granola

Full fat Greek yoghurt (never low fat it’s high in carbohydrates and sugars) with some blueberries (never dried berries) and super delicious Banting granola. Make a batch to last and store it in a jar or tupperware. Include raw nuts, seeds and coconut shavings – they’re tasty and full of nutrients. Keep cashews and chestnuts to a minimum.

Salmon & Cream Cheese

Make some Banting Blondes bread and top with full-fat cream cheese, smoked salmon (read the label to make sure there is no added sugar) and avocado (high in nutrients and fibre). Or select any other Banting friendly topping, that’s unprocessed and unrefined. Make sure it’s filling and has the awesome micronutrients and fat we love so much.

Page 27: Healthier & happier

Smoothie

Whip up a smoothie with full-fat yoghurt, a small banana (this counts for your carbohydrate allowance for the day), raw organic cocoa powder, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia) and nut butter (not peanut butter). Add xylitol for sweetness.

Green Eggs

This is our favourite. Boil two eggs. While they’re boiling, steam some spinach. Serve with half an avocado and a sprinkle of omega seeds. Add cottage cheese and Banting bread if you like. It only takes 6 mins to make.

Protein Muffins

The Banting Blondes protein packed breakfast muffins are irressistable. Make a large batch on Sunday and eat them for three mornings in a row. They’re great straight from the oven, but also delicious cold from fridge. Here’s the recipe.

The Banting Blondes Protein Breakfast Muffins

Makes 2 portions

1. Preheat oven to 180°C.2. Grease a muffin pan with butter.3. Rinse and chop the zucchini and red

peppers along with the onion and bacon. 4. In a frying pan, sauté your favourite bits

until cooked and slightly browned. Set aside.

5. In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs on high speed. Blend in yoghurt.

6. Fill the bottom of your muffin pan about 2cm with the sautéed ingredients and crumbled feta. Pour the egg mixture over until the muffin pan is almost full.

7. Bake for 15 mins or until golden brown.8. Season with salt and pepper.

TOP TIPS

LIVING IN A STATE OF CHANGEBy Dr Yesheen Singh

Just by being alive today we have collected a greater toxic burden than our forefathers.

Page 29: Healthier & happier

Happiness is not a static state. We are constantly challenged by life

but through adapting and growing we can learn to make different choices that return us to a space of happiness. Good health follows a similar dance.

Typically, we are motivated to make healthier lifestyle choices when faced with a health crisis. It takes the diagnosis of a disease or a measurable imbalance to get us to pay attention to a symptom collection that’s probably been present for some time. We change our diet, increase our levels of activity and follow whatever advice our chosen health care practitioner has given us. When faced with a measurable or quantifiable health challenge, we take steps to return our balance.

But why do we have to remain reactionary creatures? Preventative actions that help us notice low-grade imbalances, and take proactive steps before disease sets in, are a lot more beneficial to our bodies and our wallet.

By virtue of living in an industrialised society we are exposed to many more dietaryand environmental triggers that cause imbalance than our great-grandparents. The quality of our air deteriorates with every new car added to the roads, the quality of our water drops as more people tap into the water system, and

the quality of our food has morphed into unknown territory as the soil and plants get interfered with through chemical and hormonal manipulation. Just by being alive today we have collected a greater toxic burden than our forefathers.

A body exposed to toxic triggers for a long period has to find some way to recreate balance. For every action there has to be an equal reaction. Dietary and environmental triggers lead to inflammation and a range of diseases from autoimmune disorders to diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancer.

So even though we may not feel ill or off balance, it’s still advisable to regularly clear out the toxic burden we collect simply by living life. This will remove the need for our bodies to react with inflammation and disease.

3 Detox Steps Step 1: Remove or reduce your collection of dietary and environmental triggers. The less you collect the less you have to get rid of. Clean up your diet, be conscious of your air, water and food quality and stop stress and anxiety-inducing, pro inflammatory thoughts and emotions.

Step 2: Deal with what you have already picked up - enter a process to gently get rid of or detox your body, mind and spirit of the toxic triggers already present. There are as many ways to cleanse as there are practitioners. Find one that works for you and engage it in a gentle manner - slow and steady wins the detox race.

Step 3: Help your body thrive. It needs to both recover from whatever cleansing process you choose, as well as manage the ongoing toxin trigger collection. This latter role is very taxing on your immune system, gut and liver, and the organs doing all the work need love, so give it to them by helping them detox.

N utrition and eating patterns can dramatically change the way you

feel and certainly the way you look. When you begin to truly nourish your body as opposed to simply feeding it, you will begin to nourish your life. We speak to nutritional therapist Andrea Jenkins for some top tips on how you can optimise your nutrition and develop positive eating habits. With knowledge you can make food choices that create a level of health and happiness you may not have anticipated. From happy food to knowing your body and making allowances for lifestyle she gives us a holistic view of optimising nutrition.

1. Learn to understand food – understand why you are eating each and every food component. You are your body’s own personal chemist and can feed it whatever it needs at that given moment.

2. There are certainly chemical or processed food products that should without doubt be avoided but try not label yourself and impose rules on the body – life happens and evolves – with activity and stress, requirements change and diet and lifestyle must be able to respond to the body’s changing demands.

3. Don’t be a creature of habit – change it up and keep it fluid. Each food gives you a different array of minerals, enzymes and vitamins. Variety increases the likelihood that your body will receive a range of life sustaining nutrients and all the locks will be attended to.

4. Nourish the body. You only have one – make sure you feed it everything it needs to ensure it takes you to a ripe old age. Mind sets have changed – its all about making the body as strong as it can be – working every muscle and giving the cartilage, skin, organs everything needed to function optimally.

NUTRITION KNOW-HOW

Keep your blood clean with vegetables, fruit and chlorophyll. Your green vegetables are your alkalising core and act as nature’s relaxant. They will enhance vitality and life.

Page 33: Healthier & happier

Remember no quick fixes, your body is an investment – we are in it for the journey.

5. Ensure you have enough protein and amino acids – these will build up lean muscle mass and keep organs from breaking down in times of stress and illness. Look for lean wild organic meats, eggs, cottage cheese and fish to provide essential building blocks.

6. Feed the brain – it’s your means to success and stability – it needs to be worked and protected - don’t starve it or abuse its value - avoid denatured sugars, poor quality fats and be sure to feed it essential cold pressed oils e.g. walnuts, avocado, fish oils and good quality protein for neurotransmitters to work properly.

7. Eat food you recognise – read labels not for the kilojoule content but base your decision on the quality of ingredients it contains.

8. Avoid preservatives and chemicals – e.g diet coke, sweeteners, nitrates, sulphurs – the body cannot recognise them. They also tend to have an affinity for fat so will nestle in fat stores, which makes it just that much harder to detoxify.

9. Keep your blood clean with vegetables, fruit and chlorophyll. Your green vegetables are your alkalising core and act as nature’s relaxant. They will enhance vitality and life.

10. Master your blood sugar by preventing high and low swings. That means eating slow release carbohydrates and avoiding sugars that spike your blood sugar level.

11. Keep tabs of your cravings – cravings identify nutritionally deficient or struggling areas that need attention.

12. Get cues from your body for signs of deficiencies – look at things like your acid/alkaline balance, how your weight is distributed in your body, your sleep cycle, stress responses, skin inflammations – all these factors identify areas that can and should be addressed. By examining and taking corrective measures you are sure to protect your body from more serious manifestations in the future.

13. The body cleanses itself in a few ways – through the bladder, through the bowels and through the skin. Make sure all these pathways are clear and working as they should. The liver has a big job – it cannot manage to indefinitely compensate where there is a malfunction in other areas the body uses to detox.

14. Understand your digestive system – work out what makes you feel alive and light and what makes you feel stagnant and heavy. Your digestive system is your second brain from which your happiness is produced. It is also where your immunity is created.

15. Water – need I say more – why is it so hard to drink water? Remember, the body’s cry for food can be disguised as dehydration.

16. Keep active and moving – breathe in fresh oxygen for your soul and brain – be observant - dance, love, be graceful and you will attract happiness and health in all areas of your life.

17. Eat happy foods: watermelon, bananas, chilli, pumpkin seeds, chocolate, blue green algae, fish, avocado, turkey.

did you know?Soon after eating, our bodies start to break down glycogen (molecules that store energy) to produce glucose (an important carbohydrate that fuels cells). When we’re eating normally, we use glucose as our primary fuel source; all is well, we’re happy, and in storage mode. Glucose is put into our liver and muscles, and the fatty acids are stored in the body for future use.

SPEND TIME ON A

Hobby

When you’re wholly engaged and your imagination is open, your mood is heightened and you open possibilities outside your normal parameters.

livewelldo it yourself

Page 35: Healthier & happier

According to researchers hobbies are an incredibly effective way of

staving off stress. Besides that, they increase self-esteem, creativity, and can boost passion, pleasure and a sense of accomplishment. They’re even reported to decrease depression. Most people can spend hours doing the hobby they love without feeling the need for a break. “It’s completely relaxing because it is creativity with no strings attached,” said a decoupage artist. If you don’t already have a hobby, see if there’s one you might like to explore.

LOSE TRACK OF TIME

Don’t be afraid to lose track of time. Losing track of time doesn’t mean you’ve ‘wasted’ time. It’s common for happy effective people to immerse themselves and get involved in activities that challenge and stimulate them in a meaningful way. That ‘get lost’ feeling is often called flow. Studies have shown that ‘highflow’ people who spend more time on active leisure have higher engagement; higher self-esteem; and greater long-term happiness.

WRITING

Writing is an excellent way to de-stress. You can scribble anything you like, pen down fabulous memories from the past, dump feelings that make you miserable or write yourself into a fantasy story. Writing as a hobby gives the mind a sense of calm and eases tension. Collect some nice notebooks and start a daily journal.

SINGING

Learning the lyrics to some of your favourite songs and singing at the top of your voice is a fabulous way to generate happy vibes. It’s an outward expression that releases a lot of emotion and energy. A couple of songs sung out loud will change your mood substantially. Make a special singing playlist or start a karaoke evening.

PAINTING

Even if you’re painting abstract blocks of colour, painting is beneficial. It’s one hobby that tends to fully engage you and puts your mind into soft gear. If you love painting you may want to get hold of an easel and different sized canvases. Pencil sketching, doodling, watercolours, acrylics or oils are all options.

DANCING

Whether you take a class or simply dance freely in your living room, this is an energizing way of lifting your spirits. You can try out a few youtube classes, get hold of a dancing DVD or let your body free flow. It’s also a great fitness option. According to health experts, dancing occupies your body in a way that lets your mind flow and generates creative emotional expression.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Finding creative ways to frame scenes is a pursuit that’s enjoyable and satisfying. It’s a way of engaging with the outside world. You may want to collect photographs in a certain theme like people with hats, red doors or curled up cats, whatever it is it will take you on interesting journeys and provide perspective to your world. GARDENING

Gardening is particularly good at providing stress relief. Grow flowers or a veggie garden or try your hand at Bonsai. Communing with nature is rewarding and healing. A recent study in the Netherlands found lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in those who spent time gardening. PLAYING MUSIC

Picking up a drum, strumming a guitar or playing the piano can be calming and energizing. Join a drum circle, take professional lessons or teach yourself the instrument you feel most connected to. Creating music is a soothing place you can escape to.

There are so many hobbies you can choose, from raising silkworms to bookbinding, candle-making, model airplanes, stamp collecting, cubing, storm chasing, bird-watching, it’s all up to you to find something that fascinate or placates you.

Switch off all worries and concerns at night knowing

Page 37: Healthier & happier

Sleep is such a fundamental part of feeling okay and being able to

operate at optimum capacity, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re getting enough. Here are 5 tips to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

1) DEVELOP A ROUTINE Your body gets used to signals and triggers that sets off certain behavior patterns. Although we have strict bedtime routines for kids, we seldom stick to a programme ourselves. But by creating regular rituals before bedtime you send signals to your body to start winding down and get ready for sleep. Find a routine that works for you like switching to low lighting an hour beforehand; taking a warm bath; reading in bed, or doing a meditation. An important factor is to sleep at a similar time every night and wake up at the same time. When you have erratic sleeping patterns it’s more difficult to train your brain to fall asleep faster.

2) TAKE MAGNESIUM Magnesium is immensely helpful for people with sleep issues. Besides helping you feel relaxed, Magnesium plays a role in biochemical reactions like muscle function, electrolyte balance and cellular energy. You get magnesium from dark leafy greens, sea vegetables and nuts but most people don’t get enough magnesium from their diet, and prefer to take a supplement. An Epsom salt bath can also be helpful as it contains magnesium sulfate. It’s best to take magnesium about thirty minutes before bedtime.

3) USE LAVENDER OIL Lavender has calming and relaxing properties. Add it to your bath, drop some on your pillow and bedding, dab a few drops on your temples or use a burner to diffuse it through your bedroom. It’s a safe oil that most people can use without caution.

did you know?A scientific study showed little difference in cognitive function between participants with total sleep deprivation and moderate sleep deprivation. Groups that were chronically sleep restricted having about 4 to 5 hours a night performed just as poorly as subjects who stayed awake for 48 hours straight..

Most  people  don’t  think  too  much  about  their  choice  of  pillow  unless  they  sleep  badly  or  suffer  from  pain  (usually  neck  or  back  pain),  but  the  right  pillow  can  make  a  big  impact  on  your  quality  of  sleep,  your  health  and  your  well-‐being.  The  right  pillow  should  provide  both  comfort  and  support  for  your  neck  and  spine  -‐  alleviating  or  preventing  many  common  forms  of  back  and  neck  pain.

4) DIM THE LIGHTS When the sun goes down and light is restricted our bodies produce melatonin. This hormone is responsible for helping bring on sleep. When we have lots of artificial light around us, we don’t get the extra help that melatonin brings. The best sleep happens in complete darkness. Take care not to use backlit electronic devices with wavelengths that mimic sunlight; this disrupts our melatonin production.

If you must look at your screen at night wear orange lens glasses to block the blue light coming from your screen. Switch off electronic devices with light sources, like digital alarm clocks and block out light from outside. Rather use candles or a salt lamp as a soft light source in the hour leading up to bedtime.

5) WIND DOWN Stress produces cortisol that makes it hard to relax enough to sleep. Switch off all worries and concerns at night knowing that tomorrow is another day to deal with life challenges. Vigorous work-outs late in the evening, action packed movies with adrenalin producing content, caffeine and alcohol are all stimulants that can make it difficult to fall asleep. What’s more helpful is gentle yoga stretching, deep breathing or meditation.

40 helping you live life well

For almost every ailment we can manifest, there is a salad of greenery available to heal it.

Growing

Page 41: Healthier & happier

livewellgrow your own

41www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Fresh herbs aren’t always readily available yet they add so much

value both in terms of taste and health. Growing your own is the perfect solution that saves on shopping trips and is also extremely rewarding. Start off growing herbs with healing qualities you need, and get yourself into the habit of adding herbs to whatever you’re preparing in the kitchen.

ALWAYS TIRED, mix in some corianderThe carboxylic acid in coriander leaves has the ability to bind to heavy metals in the blood, like mercury, and carry them out the body. This expels toxin build up that contributes to chronic fatigue, joint pain and depression. Eat coriander with foods like avocados, quinoa, corn, seafood and black beans.

FEELING DOWN, add basilOur happy feel-good chemicals, dopamine and serotonin are boosted by components found in basil called eugenol and rosmarinic acid. Eat basil daily for up to 5 days and you will already feel the difference. Basil is good with cold meat slices, tomatoes, olives, melon and strawberries. Put a basil leaf on any savoury sandwich.

BLOATED, eat parsleyParsley is filled with chlorophyll and green goodness. It also has apiol and myristicin, that act as a diuretic and relieves water retention. Rather than use it as garnish, chop it up and eat it with grains, chickpeas, salads, onions, parmesan cheese and potatoes.

NEED A GOOD SLEEP, sip on some lemon balm tea Lemon balm belongs to the mint family and it’s been used for centuries to treat anxiety, sleep disorders, indigestion and wounds. Make the leaves into a tea by boiling them in hot water. Drink a big cup an hour before bed. Boil the leaves for 20 minutes for a concentrated mixture that acts as a skin balm solution. For severe insomnia add other herbs like chamomile and hops.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY,with oregano Oregano is an anti-inflammatory and helps with weight loss, digestion and sinus. You can sprinkle it on bean dishes or chop it into veggies and cook with chicken and meat.

GET DIGESTIVE RELIEF,with peppermintThere’s a reason why peppermints are used as after dinner mints. Peppermint has the ability to soothe digestion and help upset stomachs. Simply add a few crushed mint leaves into spring water, hot or cold. You can also put the fresh mint leaves in soups, fruit salad or gazpacho. Peppermint in oil form is used for irritable bowel syndrome, colonic spasms and gas relief.

As a human race, we are losing the balance of deep rest and rejuvenation. We live on speed dial.

by Jayshree Mannie

Page 43: Healthier & happier

We live in a world that’s changing at break-neck speed. Research

conducted by leading scientists has estimated that the ‘resting’ vibrational frequency of the earth, called the Schumann Resonance, is now close to 12Hz, from 7.8Hz. The impact of this shift in our life, cannot go unnoticed.

Look around you – there is so much happening in all sorts of ways for so many people. Global conflict, personal tragedies, escalating climate concerns, disruption of work-life balance, economic pressure and health concerns. The resonance shift is telling us something very important. This acceleration is pointing to the perturbing fact, that as a human race, we are losing the balance of deep rest and rejuvenation. We live on speed dial. And every day is about survival and making it to the next.

This is certainly not the way to live. Yet for most people, trudging along through the day, doing the same old same old, has become a way of life. The spark and ‘joie de vivre’ of life has lost its lustre. When people are asked ‘’Why are you in a job?’’ A resounding 83% of respondents say, “To pay the bills.’’ This is an indictment on our personal freedom.

Enough said. How do we shift our goal posts in this dynamic world without compromising our well-being? How do we begin to move from survive to thrive? Follow these simple steps to reconnect with your primal impulse of thriving:

Spend time in nature – take yourself off to the ocean, the park, the mountains – a place where you can hear birdsong, babbling water, rustling leaves, and drink in these pure sounds. Research shows that spending at least 15 minutes in nature has the potential to calm down the parasympathetic nervous system. You literally take the foot off the accelerator.

Move your body – walk, stretch, dance, jog, jump – movement recalibrates your body’s energy levels. The release of neurochemicals during exercise has been documented to show that it uplifts your moods and wires you positively. You go from speed dial to a big smile on your dial.

Choose to be with happy people – specialised cells in our brain called mirror neurons, actually ‘mirror’ the emotional states of others. Remember that ‘buzzy’ feeling of having a cuppa and a natter with your besties, that’s the mirror neurons doing their awesome job of elevating your happiness quotient.

Be Still – for at least 5 minutes during the day and 15 minutes before bed time, just relax and be present. Breathe deeply and consciously. Imagine your breath as prana, chi (energy) fuelling you effortlessly and with love. Close your eyes, shut off from all external stimuli and connect with the breath of life.

Do a digital detox – we are the most wired generation ever. Research about the health hazards of electromagnetic frequencies cannot be ignored. Choose one day a week to disconnect from all devices for at least three hours. Stay away from phones, laptops, tablets, play stations, television and gaming consoles. Studies indicate that your body begins to ease into a space of cellular coherence and this has a profound impact on the immune system.

Get more sleep – get at least 30 minutes more sleep at night. We lead electronic lifestyles and zoning out in front of the television or plugging away at the keyboard til late at night, robs us of rejuvenating sleep. A sleep-deprived body is not a happy and healthy body. Seven to 8 hours of deep refreshing sleep is bound to help your body and mind flourish.

Reconnect with your heart – exercise this love muscle. Go inwards and touch base with your heart. Let it become your Touchstone. Radiate your divinity from within, uncover the masterpiece that you are. Let your heart entrain your brain and feel how your cells respond in exuberance.

Keep a gratitude diary – every night jot down all the gifts that came your way – a smile from a stranger, a caress from your child, a bird nesting in your garden, the car guard greeting you, the wind through your hair – be thankful even for the seemingly insignificant

things. There’s a way in which gratitude magnetises more into manifestation. It is a powerful co-creative force.

Share an act of kindness – no matter how small, no act of kindness goes unnoticed by the universe. So grow your ‘Kindness Bank Balance’. Invest in acts of kindness and compassion. Reach out to a stranger, join a charity, offer ‘seva’ (selfless service), adopt a pet, be kind to yourself – become part of the collective through unifying acts of kindness.

These simple steps will help you flourish and thrive. Do them gently and with soft intent, have fun and be playfull. You’ll begin to notice subtle changes in your energy, health and relationships. You will be carried in the arms of life, living the fullest expression of who you are – a radiant, magnificent thriving being.

Orange Grove Farm is about two hours from Cape Town, in the heart

of the Robertson’s valley of wine and roses. It’s a working wine and olive farm with neatly arranged rows of grapes and verdant trees pulsing with olives. Surrounding the farm, the Langeberg Mountains circle the valley in storybook splendor showing off magnificent stone formations and rocky outcrops.

Orange Grove has a gentle pervasive energy destined to restore jaded city souls. Imagine over 830 hectares with a further 2400 hectares of mountain offering abundant streams, waterfalls, rock pools and magnificent flora perfect for hiking and mountain biking. Wilderness trails are bountiful, from easy 2km strolls to challenging 12km routes with rock climbing and scrambling. They take you through dry riverbeds, rock pools with exquisite mountain water you can swim in, waterfalls, a forested area, and a panoramic view of the Langeberg, from Robertson all the way to Worcester.

Owner Carlos Araujo, after spending most of his life looking for diamonds, found his real gem when he discovered Orange Grove. It was love at first sight and he didn’t hesitate to take on an extensive project restoring the 200 year old Manor house, surrounding buildings and upgrading farm roads. He also spends his time keeping the grape vines and olive groves well nurtured and in working order. Luckily for us, he decided to share his passion and has five cottages available for visiting guests. The biggest accommodates six people and the smallest houses two. All of them are situated far apart from each other in their own private setting. Getting there is easy, it’s the perfect driving time for a weekend away. Nature guide Stefan Badenhorst showed us to the Longlands Cottage, which has its own overflow pool and beautiful balcony with sweeping mountain views.

The cottage is well equipped with high speed WIFI and DSTV, and comes with tea, coffee, milk, olive oil and all the kitchen equipment

did you know?In the 1790’s the farm Orange Grove, was leased to Messrs J.H Cloete and P.J du Plessis. More than 50 years later, the nearby town of Robertson was founded. Orange Grove Manor House is the oldest house in the area and dates back to 1812. Before the vines came into being it had a flour mill turned by the passing mountain stream that supplied wheat flour to the nearby farmers. Later, vines were introduced and a storeroom with underground wine tanks was built to supply wine to KWV.

you would ever need. You can bring your own supplies and self cater or ask for a breakfast, picnic or sundowner basket to be delivered to your cottage or even to your picnic site. The food is all prepared in their 200 year old kitchen and includes a fusion of traditional South African dishes and Portuguese treats. Each cottage has a fabulous braai area complete with wood and firelighters. If the mountain walks didn’t have such a strong call, it would be tempting to laze at the cottage all weekend. Spa treatments are available, with therapists that come to the cottage offering an extensive Spa menu that include revitalizing and relaxing options as well as anti-ageing treatments and even soft laser.

Besides olive oil and wine the farm also produces a bodycare range incorporating products from the farm like grape seed oil, grape seed extract, olive oil and Fynbos. Carlos Araujo put his own personal stamp on the range by using diamond dust as a shimmering agent in the body lotion. The range is 92% organic and has no Parabens, Formaldehyde, Mineral Oil, Synthetic colours,

Synthetically derived emulsifiers or animal by-products. It is hypo-allergenic and available to purchase from the farm.

There’s a lovely energy amongst the staff who willingly share their stories of farm life. The farm is covered with aromatic Fynbos, Proteas and Renosterveld. In times gone by the fresh mountain streams and abundant food sources housed Black Rhino, Leopard, Lion and Quaggas alongside numerous antelope, including tiny Steenbok, Springbok, Grysbok, Duiker and Eland. You might also spot their resident breeding pair of Black Eagles, Jackal Buzzards, Duiker, Grysbok and if you are lucky enough, the resident Caracal. If hiking or cycling isn’t your thing ask one of the guides to take you on a nature drive to look for Cape Mountain Leopard, Honey Badger, Caracal, Bat Eared Fox and, of course, a variety of antelope. Birdwatching is another treat with more than 200 bird species. Besides a healthy raptor population, on some evenings, you

will see the Spotted Eagle Owl and Black-Crowned Night-Heron. During the day look out for Jackal Buzzard, Steppe Buzzard and perhaps even the Peregrine Falcon and Black Harrier. Over full moon, nothing beats watching an incredible sunset while the full moon rises. Orange Grove Farm’s whole operation is based on sound environmental and conservation practices. They’re serious about water quality, soil erosion, vegetation cover and a minimal carbon footprint. They’re constantly working at removing aliens (like Pine, Eucalyptus and Golden Wattle) from the watercourses and other sensitive areas.

“We believe all businesses can take less and give more, and we seek to do this through our daily actions, big and small, and we all consciously seek ways to leave a positive legacy for the earth.”

Always on the look out for effective therapies to try out, this month

we chose Stress Release Therapy at the Lila Health and Wellbeing studio. We sent one of our journalists who happened to have back pain to try it out. Sue reports.

To me, my recent back and neck pain were clear symptoms of stress, so I was delighted to try out a body alignment and stress release therapy session. My appointment was with Nicole Panzer from Lila Health and Wellbeing. Stepping in to her light, peaceful and nurturing studio gave me the sense I was exactly where I was meant to be.

Alongside body alignment and stress release Nicole uses a variety of other treatments that work together to create alignment and relaxation. To begin with, she took down a detailed history of symptoms and past conditions. She then began using the Dorn method. This is a gentle hands-on therapy developed in Germany 40 years ago. It’s safe and doesn’t click or

crunch your joints but meticulously adjusts your body. After carefully measuring me, my leg length, spinal curvature and other dimensions I was amazed to learn there were many variations in my symmetry. After gently manipulating my spine, Nicole used trigger point therapy. This involves applying pressure to specific points on the muscles. This releases tension the body tends to hold onto. Proper breathing and release through the breath is also important. The whole process of identifying my mis-alignment and then adjusting it by using pressure wasn’t comfortable but it was counter balanced with a Breus massage. This is a gentle relaxing spinal massage that safely stretches, nourishes, aligns and energises the back. My treatment was finished off with the wonderful healing energy of Reiki. After an hour and a half treatment time I was left blissfully re-aligned, relaxed and centred.

WE TRIED IT

Page 47: Healthier & happier

Leilah Kirsten is one of the Wellness Warehouse ambassadors. She is a woman only Personal Trainer and Pilates Teacher based in Cape Town. We asked her for some of her principles and

practices to Living Life Well. She reports.

Health and happiness has not always been a part of my journey on this planet. Although blessed to live my passion since a young age and make a career of it, being a dancer came with its struggles - one of which was a panic attack just days away from an important performance. Today I can confidently say I am a healthier and happier human and would love to share what’s working for me.

FIND PURPOSE

Firstly, it is important to live your purpose. For most this is a tough one - sometimes it takes years to discover purpose and meaning. My advice? Be patient and keep listening to your gut. I thought my purpose was to be an artist and move people through dance. As it turns out, I’ve discovered my strength as a teacher, healer and ‘fairy of feel-goodness’ using my knowledge of how the body moves and what it can physically achieve. It feels like I’m finally realising my real purpose, and it’s awesome.

HAVE A SALT BATH

Secondly, I strongly believe salt water is extremely cleansing. Growing up in the Eastern Cape, the warm Indian Ocean water played a large role in my childhood. I have vivid memories of frolicking in the waves and feeling completely free and at peace. Even if I don’t have time to go to the beach I try and have a salt bath every night, it’s especially helpful when spending time helping people. It definitely adds to my sense of wellbeing.

USE KINESIOLOGY

Kinesiology is a new found love that helps me manage stress and break through stubborn walls. It seeks the cause of any physical or emotional imbalances and then puts the body on a path of healing. My Kinesiologist helped me clear what I thought were dance injuries I would have for life. From immeasurable back pain to a knee injury that not even a top knee surgeon could identify, Kinesiology has worked. Kinesiology and physical movement is a huge part of my life. I train with a Personal Trainer and Pilates teacher regularly and enjoy walking and swimming. When I’m not moving, I’m not happy.

TAKE OWNERSHIP

Something that’s fast-tracking my sense of health and happiness is owning my talents, capabilities, potential and my right to my personal story. I suppose you could call it self-love but it feels much greater than that. Choosing to start my own business in the health and wellness industry has been one of the scariest and eye-opening experiences of my life so far and forced me to discover who I really am, what I really want, what I’m capable of and how much I value myself. What I really mean is: love yourself wholeheartedly as soon as you can. Only now am I starting to realise how powerful this is.

I was delighted to be able to contribute to this month’s magazine as the theme fits my role as a Personal Trainer and Pilates Teacher so well. You can join me on a path to health and happiness, by signing up for my first ever free eBook ‘The Happy and Healthy 4 Week Challenge’. It is a simple guide to living a happier and healthier life. Avoid traffic, parking, class fees and stress by developing a home

practice. Although you may not have the benefit of communing with fellow yogis, you can do a class anytime you please and you get to choose the length of class, the teacher and style. Here are some tips to support a home practice.

1. FIND A PEACEFUL SPACEChoose a place where you’re not likely to be interrupted. You’ll need space for your mat with height enough to stretch your arms. It’s a good idea not to feel cramped so try and avoid being in between pieces of furniture. If you’re choosing an outside spot and planning to follow a class online make sure it’s in the shade so there’s not too much glare on the screen. Switch your phone off.

2. KEEP YOUR PROPS NEARBYOn your checklist you might want to include a water bottle, towel, bolster, mat, a block and strap. You may also want a timer and a blanket. If you have space available to set aside a permanent spot add some incense, a candle and whatever else you feel will sanctify your practice zone.

3. MAKE A PLAY LISTIf you’re following a known routine, make a playlist to accompany your asanas. Putamayo has a CD called Yoga with relaxing melodies. If you’re doing a power class you may want to use something more upbeat. Have fun putting together all your favourite tunes to keep you going through a class, and select a very chilled track for your last five minutes.

4. PRE-SELECT CLASSES YOU LOVEThere are many different yoga classes you can subscribe to. Try yogaglo.com; myyogaonline.com; yogaanytime.com or download an app like Yogify or Yoga Studio. Go onto YouTube and get free classes from yogis like Lesley Fightmaster, Sadie Nardini or Tara Stiles. You will soon find a favourite teacher. You can search for as many different styles as you want from Kundalini to Yin, Flow, Hatha, Power, Ashtanga – they’re all available. You also get long or shorter classes, highly active one’s or more gentle variations. See what your body is calling for and choose accordingly. Note that if you want more time in a certain pose you can always push pause until you’re satisfied with your stretch then resume the class. Subscriptions like yogaglo allow you to schedule a class at a certain time and it will start playing automatically for you.

5. CREATE A REGULAR TIME SLOTAlthough life often gets in the way of routine, keeping a standard time for your yoga creates discipline. You might feel stiff in the morning and prefer evening classes but you also might find if you do a class in the morning you are more likely to stick to it. Either way, make it a regular part of your day.

did you know?“True yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed; yoga is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called yoga, its essence must be embodied.” Aadil Palkhivala

This month we celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from 10

March to 12 April 2015 in a campaign dedicated to spreading awareness of Fairtrade producers, products and suppliers.

Fairtrade is a worldwide movement promoting sustainable farming that doesn’t harm people or the planet. Look out for the Fairtrade mark at Wellness; you’ll spot it on a range of coffees, teas, chocolates, wines, and Scheckter’s Organic Energy Drink.

Leonie Engelbrecht, Crèche Supervisor and Office Assistant at Bergendal Farm tells us the story of how Fairtrade has influenced her life.

Soon after matriculating in 2000, Leonie started working as a citrus picker on a neighbouring farm in Citrusdal, a lush village in the Olifant’s Valley River - the Western Cape’s premier citrus growing region.

She moved to Bergendal, a Fairtrade farm close by, in 2007. Working on a Fairtrade farm that’s committed to ‘partnership,

change, potential, equity, dignity and sustainability’, gave Leonie the opportunity to further her education with the support of the Fairtrade Development Premium. She was exposed to various computer and self-development courses. Having always dreamt of being a teacher, Leonie asked if she could stand in for a teacher at the Fairtrade crèche who was about to go on maternity leave.

She thrived in the role and has been working at the crèche and in the aftercare programme ever since. In 2009, Leonie cemented her independence by getting her driver’s license, also funded through the Fairtrade Premium. She now drives herself to evening classes at the West Coast College to study teaching part-time.

Leonie’s future plans are to sit for the level 5 Teaching Certificate exams in 2015 and finish Level 6 in 2016. “Fairtrade gave me an opportunity that lasts a lifetime. I enjoy what I do and I am very proud of the success I have achieved,” says Leonie.

Why we love Leonie’s story:

What makes Leonie’s story so inspiring is her approach to life and her determination to empower herself. Her good fortune is the mix of a fantastic attitude, great timing and opportunities as a result of her employer being Fairtrade certified.

Bergendal produces wine grapes for The Six Hats wines from Citrusdal, which are proudly supported by Wellness Warehouse. Find them in our Wine Library at Wellness Warehouse on Kloof or online at wellnesswarehouse.com.

Meeting Relationship Needs

Knowing what your emotional needs are and how to get them met by your partner will grow and enhance your relationship.

A healthy relationship can help you feel much better about yourself,

boost your self-esteem and generate more happiness and fulfillment.

Many of the couples I see complain about communication problems – some describe bouts of conflict, other feel as though they’re not being heard but most often they have a general feeling of not being fulfilled yet unsure why.

Communication involves an attempt to express something to another. A clear coherent message like ‘I love you’ shouldn’t be difficult to interpret. But, at times communication creates conflict with participants unable to make sense of the meaning or the situation. Arguments are often symptoms of a deeper root cause. Couples end up saying things they don’t really mean and create confusion around the source of the actual problem.

Often conflict comes from emotional needs not being met. Many people aren’t directly in touch with what their emotional needs are and have little idea how to get them met by their partner.

Without clearly communicating these needs, negative patterns can spring up. This can make the dynamics of the relationship feel stifled or stuck and make it difficult for couples to make sense of what’s actually happening. I often see couples in this dilemma. They love each other, but can’t work out why they argue about the ‘same silly things’ all the time.

This is where relationship skills can really help. Healthy and fulfilling relationships don’t always come easily, they require working together on issues and applying relationship intelligence.

Key tips to building Relationship Intelligence

• Stand back from your relationship and have reflective conversations with your partner, like ‘what are your emotional needs and how can they best be met?’ Revisit these – they can change over time.

• Know when your emotional needs aren’t being met and how this flows through to conflict. Take ownership of your needs.

• Explore the positive relationship patterns; the time that things work really well and

take note of what is nourishing them in these times.

• How easy is it to meet your partner’s needs? Is there anything that gets in the way that you need to work through and understand?

• Remember that generally people act with good intent. Remember too that you’ve created your relationship together and you need to work as a team to make sense of the individual dynamics and the areas that can be changed. Often couples become isolated from each other to protect themselves, or because they feel angry, upset or frustrated with the other. Sometimes a complete change of viewpoint is needed.

• Take time to understand yourself. Ask yourself why you feel so strongly about certain things. How does it connect to your childhood and previous relationship experiences? When we start making sense of these connections we have the conscious ability to retain the same context or make a shift and look at things differently. This often requires challenging your set ideals.

did you know?Often couples treat and talk to each other in a manner they wouldn’t use with anyone else. It’s an ineffective communication trap that perpetuates. If you recognize this in your relationship try pretending your partner is someone else and speak to him or her as you would speak to a friend.

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul JacobsonStudies have found that Omega 3 is just as beneficial in pet health as in humans. Omega 3 has anti-inflammatory properties that help resist disease and vulnerability to chronic conditions. It also helps improve skin conditions, allergies and arthritis. Many people give it to puppies and kittens to help with brain development. Most pet food is largely grain-based with an imbalance of Omega 3 versus Omega 6. This means pets become susceptible to inflammation and the onset of disease. Omega 3 comes from flaxseed oil but according to nutritionist Sally Ann Creed, the preferred source is from natural fish oils. “Although flaxseed oil is often touted, even by some doctors, as a substitute for fish oil, new studies show it’s not a reliable alternative. The conversion of flaxseed oil’s short-chain omega-3 to long-chain omega-3 found in fish is unreliable and inefficient, say new tests. This is especially true for the ‘brain booster’ DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), credited with giving baby brains higher IQs and protecting aging brains from memory loss and Alzheimer’s”.Because we believe so strongly in the benefits of Omega 3, we’ve developed our own brand supplement with deep sea fish oil.

NEWLY LAUNCHED OM3 Omega Deep Sea Fish Oil by Vondi’s for pets

• A higher percentage of Omega 3 naturally distilled from fish caught in local South Atlantic Seas.

• Unlike many other Omega oil products, no alcohol is added in processing.

• No added preservatives.• OM3 Omega Fish Oil has very low peroxides,

and mercury and other heavy metals have been removed

• OM3 Omega uses a manufacturing process unique to OM3 Oils South (Pty) LTD– patent pending

• OM3 uses a natural low-temperature distillation process which enhances the therapeutic benefits by:Preserving the delicate natural molecular structure of Omega 3Producing minimal rancidity – tests show peroxide levels to be well below most imported productsEnsuring a higher percentage of Omega 3 than other similar productsThe anti-inflammatory properties of Omega 3s help:Improve the health of your pet’s skin and coat, itching, irritation, allergies and bacterial infections.Help maintain healthy cell membranesSlows the growth of common yeast infectionsAid in the proper development of the retina and visual cortex; improving eyesight and eye health.Helps prevent heart problems by maintaining healthy blood pressure, decreasing triglyceride and blood cholesterol levels.Slows the development and spread of certain pet cancersEnhances mood by encouraging cell membrane sensitivity to neurotransmitters receptors like serotonin and dopamine.

Vondis OM3 OMEGA contains a balance of omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids which supports healthy cell membranes, or healthy healthy membrane function. Some fish oils sold as Omega 3’s have ethyl alcohol added to convert them to Ethyl esters and are sold as Omega 3. OM3 Omega fish oil does not contain these artificially synthesised esters.

What cold and flu medication can I take if I’m diabetic? When you’re ill your body releases stress hormones that naturally raise your blood sugar. If you’re diabetic you wouldn’t want to choose over-the-counter medication that contains sugar, which could further raise your blood sugar levels. To choose the right medication, take the time to speak with your pharmacist about your symptoms and be sure to mention that you are diabetic or avoiding sugar. Tablets or capsules (like Corenza C, for example) are often a better choice than syrups, which may contain sugar. If you are considering using a syrup, look for one that is sugar-free like Bisolvon Linctus DA. If you’re diabetic you may want to check your blood sugar levels more often than usual and stay hydrated with a sugar-free electrolyte like NUUN.

Natural Hair Growth

lookwell

Page 57: Healthier & happier

Keep a full head of hair by encouraging natural hair growth.

Addressing the root cause includes looking at issues like hormones, stress and even stomach acid.

UP YOUR NUTRITION· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Eat a diet rich in nutrient dense, chemical free, locally grown foods. Protein is most important; it’s a building block for hair growth and repair. If you need nutrient help, here are some helpful supplements:

• B-complex vitamins like B6 (Pyridoxine) and B7 (Biotin) are important to synthesise protein.

• Iron and Zinc help hair follicles grow and regulate hormones associated with hair growth.

• Vitamin D boosts hair growth. • Essential Fatty Acids hydrate hair and

keep it shiny. • Vitamins A and C are used to make

sebum, the substance that coats the outside of hair follicles.

BOOST DIGESTION· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Good digestion seems a strange pre-requisite as a factor for hair growth but consider that hair is made up of keratin, which is protein, and we need proper protein intake and assimilation for healthy hair. Adequate stomach acid helps protein break down into amino acids. When food is properly digested, it provides supportive building blocks for hair to grow.

Although most people think heartburn and indigestion are caused by too much

stomach acid, that’s not the case. About ninety percent of people have too little stomach acid. Too much stress and too little nutrients can slow the production of gastric juice. This causes food to stay in the tummy too long and creates digestive stress. Healthy digestive enzymes are a good thing all round, they break down protein, fats and carbs too. Maximize digestion and assimilation of essential nutrients by taking appropriate digestive enzymes. Eating the right food combinations, sipping peppermint or ginger tea, and avoiding fruit after meals will also help.

KEEP HORMONES IN CHECK · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Healthy hair also depends on hormone balance. This means keeping stress at bay, avoiding toxins, regularly checking your thyroid and boosting your nutrition.

Cortisol is a stress hormone that spikes in response to chronic and acute stress. On-going stress that keeps cortisol levels high will affect metabolic function and in turn, impede hair growth.

Estrogen dominance is a common hormone imbalance in women and men of all ages. Toxins in our environment, like pesticides and BPA, act like estrogen in the body while foods like soy throw estrogen out of balance. Elevated levels of estrogen can significantly contribute to hair loss. See if you need to regulate your estrogen balance and look for ways to naturally reverse estrogen dominance.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. Low thyroid function can cause hair loss, which often manifests in patches, like the outer third of the eyebrow. If you’re losing a lot of hair and it seems more coarse than usual, you may have low thyroid function. Good nutrition is a factor in improving hormone balance. It may be that a grain free diet is necessary.

WATCH YOUR ADRENAL FUNCTION · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·It’s fairly easy to exhaust your adrenals, especially when living a city life. Stimulants like sugar, too much caffeine, fast burning carbohydrates, alcohol, traffic and stress will over stimulate the nervous system and contribute to burn-out. Hair loss from

did you know?Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles in the skin. Healthy hair has a cycle of growth and loss. On average most people shed about 100- 200 strands a day.

adrenal stress is seen as overall thinning of the hair, mostly along the top centerline. Take adrenal adaptogen supplements like Rhodiola Rosea, Ashwaganda, Astragalus. Remove all food allergens and foods you are sensitive to and most importantly, slow down.

DO CARDIO EXERCISE · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Exercise is crucial for healthy hair. Hair follicles get nutrients from the blood and when exercise causes the blood to pump it makes the nutrients more available. Cardiovascular exercise is known to improve hair health and accelerate hair growth.

GET QUALITY SLEEP · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Make sure you sleep 7-8 hours a night in a dark room without electronic devices near your bed. Charge your phone in another room and avoid foods that spike your blood sugar in the hours before you sleep.

BE CALMER · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Keep your nervous system balanced and functioning properly. That means getting out of the habit of worrying or thinking too much; learning to meditate; and speaking and thinking positively.

TAKE A SAUNA · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Have a sauna once a week, not only will it detox you but it will increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, and this means stimulating hair follicles. When there’s more blood flow more nutrients are able to get to the blood and this translates into better hair growth.

MASSAGE YOURSCALP · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Get someone in the family to do a scalp massage once a week. Use Macadamia, Morroccan or coconut oil and work it into both scalp and hair. It’s best to keep it on overnight (watch your pillow though – you may want to cover it with a towel). All these oils are deeply conditioning.

BAN BAD CHEMICALS · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Harsh chemicals in shampoos and hair products can be damaging to the natural

oils your hair needs to stay healthy. There are many natural products with ingredients that don’t alter the pH of the hair or dry out the scalp. Choose body products free from ingredients that can cause hormone imbalance. This means free from sodium laryl or laureth sulfate, parbens, propylene glycol and silicone.

LEAVE STEROIDS OUT · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·Male pattern baldness is caused by the conversion of testosterone into di-hydro testosterone that inhibits hair growth on the head. Avoid steroid use. Men genetically predisposed to baldness will go bald more quickly if they also use steroids. Besides, steroids are far more damaging to health than they are beneficial to athletic performance.

SUPPLEMENT WITHCOLLAGEN · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·High-quality collagen has a unique profile of amino acids that provide building blocks for healthy hair, skin and nails. Although there aren’t conclusive studies showing that supplementing will make your hair grow, there are studies proving that it improves skin elasticity and moisture. It’s a popular folk remedy for weak fingernails because of its collagen and mineral content.

We get collagen from gelatin, which comes from the connective tissue of animals. Most traditional diets include gelatin-rich cartilage from animals. It’s primarily protein, water and mineral salts and has half of the 18 essential amino acids, needed for survival. Glycine, for instance, is needed by the liver to remove toxins. Lysine is another amino acid from gelatin that helps with calcium absorption and building muscle.

Gelatin helps with digestion as it naturally binds to water and helps food move more easily through the digestive tract. It’s been shown to alleviate asthma, fatigue, Crohn’s disease and colitis. Studies show that eating gelatin rich food helps maintain a more youthful appearance. Gelatin helps the body absorb nutrients and will optimise the value of any meal.

Make sure you are taking gelatin that comes from a 100% grass fed source.

The first principle of Nurturing Your Being refers to your physiological

state. It asks you, day-by-day, and moment by moment to look after yourself.

Maintaining your energy, sense of inner peace, optimism and social bonds gives you the willpower and courage to take better action and break old patterns. It puts you in a space to be your best, a place of positive possibility and opportunity.

If you allow your being to get low: hungry, angry, lonely or tired (think of the acronym HALT), your willpower fades and you’ll tend to revert to old patterns of avoiding pain and seeking pleasure. Your behaviour is likely to be reactive and negative and the choices and decisions you make from that state will not be the highest expression of you.

Use these 4 daily habits to nurture your being.

1. Maintain your Energy levels by prioritising restful sleep, good nutrition and daily healthy activity. These offer structure and maintenance to your day. Make them non-negotiable priorities, not an afterthought. Schedule them in your diary if that helps. At first you may feel like you don’t have the time to attend to each of them everyday, but soon you will see how much quality time and energy they create.

2. In your Attitude and Emotions, strive to keep yourself centred, relaxed and focused. Do this not just at work, but also in your relationships and personal wellbeing. Find daily practices and habits that help you maintain and restore your inner sense of calm and balance.

3. We are social beings. Connection to others feeds and nourishes us. We find ourselves in the reflections and messages they bring to us. Even if it’s connecting with your pet, make sure you have companionship in your day.If your day is fast paced, and overfill with people and demands, find balance in something slower, with more alone time and fewer rules. If your work is solitary and has a certain habitual routine, consider activities with variety and social connection.

4. Maintain your self-complexity, that means having interests outside of work and a daily routine that adds new dimensions your life. By doing so, when one area of life proves stressful, spending time in the others can restore the balance.

A satisfied, energised, relaxed, and optimistic you is a great start to achieving amazing things in your life. So don’t wait until your best parts are used up. Start now.

HOW CAN I USE THIS CONCEPT?

1. Take a piece of paper divided in 2 columns

2. Label each column THEN and NOW 3. Take each item below from ‘a to f’ and

under the THEN title write how you operated previously and under NOW, how you plan to make things better. a. Sleep and Restb. Nutritionc. Exercise and Activityd. Time Managemente. Focus and Attentionf. Social and Relationships

4. Consider if each was an asset or liability to your wellbeing, and how that could be better.

5. Make some commitments, then take action.

6. Put all your commitments on your fridge door as a constant reminder.

Things you want to know about...

Being healthierHappiness is up to youDid you know that your genes and family upbringing account for only half your happiness levels? Although debate continues, many researchers believe

only 10% of happiness comes from external circumstances. The good news? Your outlook on life, and the choices you make account for 40% of your happiness. Bottom line? You’re in control of the way you feel.

Happy supplementsWhile your environment and life choices play a big role in your levels of happiness, food and supplements can also boost your

mood. It’s believed a lack of vitamin D can contribute to depression. B vitamins, especially B12, B6 and folate, also support the nervous system. Consider supplementing.

Stable blood sugar, stable moodFluctuations in your blood sugar can cause changes in mood and energy. This is one of the many reasons it’s important to eat foods that keep blood sugar levels stable.

Avoid added sugar and snack smart on nuts and seeds. Experiment with banting-friendly kale chips and alternatives to sweet treats.

Think positivelyResearchers call the tendency to see the cup half full ‘dispositional optimism’. This innate

optimism is considered a health asset. Optimistic people are healthier and live longer than their less optimistic friends. So think positively – it’s good for you.

Stretch it outCompared to walking as a form or exercise, yoga has a better impact on boosting mood and lowering anxiety. This is because the brain responds

to yoga by creating more GABA, a chemical responsible for regulating nerve activity. People with mood and anxiety disorders may produce lower levels of GABA. Why not try yoga if you’re feeling low or stressed? Grab a mat and get stretching.
