Copper is proven to kill 99.9% of the bacteria most commonly responsible for hospital-acquired infections and its efficacy is scientifically proven to be far greater than silver-

containing coatings. It is also the only solid antimicrobial touch surface approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Copper – the world’s most effective protection against bacterial infectionCopper has been shown to have a powerful anti-bacterial action in a wide range of applications. Scientific evidence

indicates that the action of copper against bacteria operates in two steps.

Firstly, contact with copper disrupts the ‘transmembrane potential’ that stabilises the

outer membrane of bacteria so that holes develop in the membrane. Further holes may be created by direct action between when a copper ion ‘hits’ a key component of the cell wall and an oxidation reaction occurs.

Once the holes have developed, copper ions are able to enter the cell and obstruct biochemical reactions in the cell. At the same time, the holes allow vital nutrients and water to leave the bacterial cell, weakening it still further.

Healthcare associated infectionsIt has been estimated that 80% of infectious diseases are transmitted by touch(1) and that 51% of patients in intensive

care units worldwide have infections(2). It has also been found that the risk of acquiring an infection increases proportionally to the time a patient spends in hospital(2). Patients with

infections are more than twice as likely to die as patients without infections.

Despite vast improvements in infection control measures in hospitals and other care environments, the number of hospital-acquired infections remain unacceptably high.

Frequently touched surfaces such as taps – which are used by healthcare staff, patients and visitors - are often heavily contaminated with colony-forming units of infectious bacteria can present a serious risk of infection.

It is at these surfaces that an added line of defence is now available, in the form of Performa taps and mixers manufactured with Antimicrobial Copper.

What is Antimicrobial Copper?Antimicrobial Copper is a touch surface material that continuously kills 99.9% of bacteria within 2 hours of contact. These include MrSA, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VrE), Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. Coli O157:H7. Antimicrobial Copper easily outperforms commonly used silver-based antibacterial coatingsAntimicrobial Copper is the world’s most effective antimicrobial touch surface material and has been scientifically proven to out-perform silver-based antibacterial coatings under typical indoor conditions(3).
