LEADERSHIP STATEMENT

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that 2019 marked our 45th year here at Healthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. For those of you who have journeyed with us from the beginning, you know the road has often been rough and winding. Like many nonprofit organizations, we’ve seen our fair share of difficulties - from fluctuations in funding and the impact of changing regulations, to effectively managing growth and expansion. At times, it was an uphill climb. Yet, our clear vision and commitment to substance use treatment and mental health counseling access for all remained our guiding compass.

Today, we face new challenges, and with them comes the opportunity for new and innovative solutions. The Living Room, for example, is a pioneering answer to the questions of responsive care when urgent mental health support is needed. Through a partnership with NAMI Metro Suburban, we offer visitors a safe space and trained staff when the emergency room may not seem like the best option. The Living Room welcomes everyone, even if an individual just wants to talk.

One of the more critical discussions going on in Chicago – and the country – right now is the rising rate of opioid and fentanyl use, and the resulting fatalities from overdoses. Opioid misuse has gone beyond a serious public health issue. It is an epidemic affecting our children and neighbors, right here in our own backyard. As the city takes steps to counter and stunt the impact of opioid use, we, too, must find ways to help our communities recover and repair.

Our Harm Reduction Team understands the full scale of this epidemic and works diligently every day to educate and empower community members on the crisis before us. They focus on outreach in Chicago’s hardest hit neighborhoods. In the past six months alone, they’ve trained over 300 people on the use of Naloxone, a prescription medication that can be administered to reverse the effects of an opioid or fentanyl overdose. As active members of the West Side Opioid and Heroin Task Force, our team takes part in an initiative to train at least one person per block on Chicago’s west side, ensuring access to Naloxone where it’s needed most.

Their outreach efforts extend to television and internet audiences, as well. Each week, they host a live call-in show on CAN TV, where viewers can ask questions and watch helpful demonstrations. As they continue to expand their reach to help as many people as possible, our team has reached out to, and formed relationships with, numerous community partners who share the goal of helping Chicago take effective steps to address the opioid epidemic.

The changing landscape of mental health counseling and substance use treatment offers us new roads to navigate. While we may tread on uncharted territory at times, we continue to be steadfast in our commitment to offering services that empower individuals, families, and communities.

As we look back at another year at H.A.S., we want to thank you, our valued supporters, for your continued efforts in helping us achieve and exceed our annual goals. Without your assistance, our mission to serve our most vulnerable communities would be further challenged with roadblocks to fulfillment. We are grateful that you have chosen to join us in bettering the lives of our neighbors and look forward to many more years of service.

Sincerely,

Marco E. Jacome, Chief Executive Officer Adnan Assad, Board President

Mission StatementHealthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (H.A.S.) provides a continuum of multicultural and bilingual (English/Spanish) behavioral care and social services that empower individuals, families, and communities.

Vision StatementHealthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (H.A.S.) seeks to implement sustainable programs that benefit society by improving the well-being and recovery efforts of those individuals, families, and communities impacted by behavioral health problems.

H.A.S. provides a wide range of social services in a caring, supportive, culturally competent environment.

Outpatient/Intensive Outpatient Substance Use Treatment: Staff and participants collaborate to develop individualized recovery plans, and participants learn about the disease process of substance use disorders; understand and accept their own substance misuse; and explore healthy lifestyles. Included with these services is aftercare treatment, a type of continued treatment designed to prevent relapse and expand on coping strategies. It recognizes that addiction does not stop when treatment ends and helps ensure our participants have the long-term resources needed to maintain recovery.

Postpartum Depression (PPD) Program: PPD therapists provide clinical assessments, individual and family-based psychotherapy, support group treatment, psychiatric evaluations, medication monitoring, health education, and case management services to pregnant and postpartum women experiencing—or at risk for developing—postpartum depression. H.A.S. is one of the only providers in the state who offers community-based, Spanish-language PPD services.

The Living Room: Launched in September 2018, The Living Room, a partnership with NAMI Metro Suburban, is an innovative mental health care model designed to support individuals experiencing increased mental health symptoms. Rather than going to an emergency room, individuals can visit The Living Room where they will have access to a comfortable, calming environment, and both clinical and peer support.

¡Basta! (Spanish for Enough): ¡Basta! provides free, bilingual services to survivors of domestic violence. The program offers crisis intervention, counseling, case management, and legal advocacy support to women and their children, giving them the resources they need for safe, self-directed lives.

Partner Abuse Intervention and Anger Management: A complement to ¡Basta!, these programs are committed to eliminating and preventing violence between intimate partners. Much of these programs focus on establishing healthy relationships between partners and within family units.

Youth Services: H.A.S. staff work with at-risk youth and meet with young people at convenient locations in the community, offering services and supports designed to decrease violence and increase healthy coping skills. Additionally, we provide outpatient and intensive outpatient substance use treatments programs tailored specifically for young people.

Residential Supports: H.A.S. Men’s Residential Treatment Program gives individuals structured, supportive living environments. Each resident has access to group, individual, and family therapy as well as life skills education. Our Transitional Housing Program (THP) serves homeless, bilingual adult males seeking long-term recovery.

In addition to housing, THP residents have access to counseling and substance use treatment as well as a variety of social service supports designed to reintegrate them into thecommunity.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT): The MAT program is designed to help individuals overcome opioid addiction by offering medication that eases withdrawal symptoms and cravings. In combination with counseling and other supports, MAT is an effective recovery tool that helps individuals reclaim their lives.

The following testimonial was written in the participant’s own words, based on his own experience.

My perception of mental illness has changed because of my own experience of it. I used to have the stereotypical idea that people with mental illness appear ‘out of it,’ and were identifiable by their erratic behavior and messy appearance. I realize now that I also believed mental illness was a character weakness. My perceptions were due in part to my family’s attitude towards mental illness. Several relatives have experienced depression, but within my family mental illness was considered a weakness and was treated with a ‘hush-hush’ attitude. Thankfully, their attitude, and mine, has changed as a result of my experience.

During the past two years my mental health has been challenged, and it was only recently that I was properly diagnosed. Knowing that I needed professional attention for what was occurring was not something I was pleased about, given my independent nature. However, deep down I knew treatment was necessary, including the need for medication. If it were not for my therapist and the Advanced Practice Nurse at H.A.S., I don’t know where I’d be today.

The treatment, understanding, and proactive care I receive from these individuals is supportive beyond words and has allowed me to confront my mental health challenges knowing that I have a team behind me that won’t allow me to falter. I owe the mental health team at H.A.S. a debt of gratitude that I will never be able to fully explain or repay.

Daniel* began using heroin when he was about 40 years old shortly after being released from prison. “It started off with a good feeling,” he says, ‘but then I started running into the withdrawals and it becom a need instead of a want.”

Soon, the negative consequences of drug use began to increase. His girlfriend left him, he lost his job and began selling drugs. Daniel eventually returned to prison to serve first a 2-year sentence, then a 2-month sentence. “I looked at myself and could not recognize myself,” he says. “I dropped to my knees and started praying.”

In 2012, Daniel came to the NEXA Medication Assisted Treatment Program (MAT) for help. He attended regular meetings and was inspired by other participants who had been clean for 15-20 years. Daniel states that treatment helped him learn a lot about himself. “The MAT program allowed me to be sober and fully participate,” he says. He became more engaged in treatment, attended trainings to facilitate support groups, and participated in consumer advisory boards.

Currently, Daniel is a peer educator and navigator with Cook County Health (Core Center). His plan is to continue to give back to the community by supporting individuals who are released from prison, and those struggling with drug addiction.

Today, he is making a great deal of progress. His relationships with those who are close to him have improved and he feels more confident about his current work situation. He is currently working towards becoming a trainer at a gym. Brian has put a lot of hard work into his recovery, and we are proud of his achievements.

Maya* Postpartum Depression Program Participant

Maya* came to H.A.S. following the birth of her first baby. She was quite tearful and felt she was a “failure as a mom.” Maya blamed herself for many things that were out of her control - like getting an epidural when she wanted a “natural” birth, having difficulty getting her baby to latch on during nursing, and even the baby’s slight neonatal jaundice. Maya felt incapable of soothing her crying baby and would get frustrated when her efforts to calm him failed. Additionally, her fear of losing her child to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) was so great, she would barely allow herself to sleep.

Maya’s therapist incorporated a variety of tools to aid in her treatment, including weekly therapy sessions utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, daily relaxation exercises and mindfulness skills, and learning to accept help when it was offered. Maya says that these methods, supplemented with medication prescribed by the H.A.S. Advanced Practice Nurse, helped her “clear the fog that seemed to be clouding [her] brain.” Over the next few months of treatment, Maya noticed a significant improvement in her mood, energy level, and overall outlook on the future.

“I finally began to enjoy my baby and motherhood, in general,” Maya explained. “I am so grateful that I didn’t put off getting help…it has made all the difference in the world to me and my family!”

Alex* came to H.A.S. at a very vulnerable time in his life. He was struggling with alcohol abuse and on probation. After assessment, Alex enrolled in several treatment programs, including Intensive Outpatient Treatment and Continuing Care. During this time, he registered for courses at College of DuPage, completed welding training, and found employment as a welder. The positive changes Alex made as a result of treatment were recognized during his probation. He contacted H.A.S. after he completed Continuing Care to share the good news that he had been able to regain full driving privileges and buy his first home! We are so proud to be a part of Alex’s recovery journey.

Miriam* ¡Basta! Domestic Violence Program Participant

Miriam* is a participant in the Domestic Violence counseling services at the ¡Basta! Program. After living with her abuser for many years, and facing constant emotional, verbal, financial and physical abuse, she turned to H.A.S. for help. We provided her with the support she needed to reclaim her life. Through pro bono lawyer referrals and angel funding, Miriam was able to file divorce papers, obtain orders of protection and apply for child support.

Since then, she has enrolled in classes and started a part time job. At H.A.S., Miriam received emotional support, psychoeducational domestic violence education, referrals, case management and court advocacy services. She continues to attend individual and group sessions at the ¡Basta! Program. Miriam now reports that she has a greater understanding of domestic violence, stating, “I don’t want my children growing up around that and the program helped me to finally realize it.”

Sam* Broadview Living Room Visitor

Sam* came to the Living Room to find someone to talk to because he was unhappy with his current life situation. Sam was interested in setting goals for himself but lacked the motivation to do so. After speaking with a counselor, and he began to see things from a positive perspective. He believed that once he was able to find work he would change his life for the better.

After meeting with a counselor, Sam went on to find a good job and has made plenty of progress since. He is more positive and upbeat about the direction of his life. Sam’s counselor checks in with him often, commending him on taking the first steps to a new beginning, and encouraging him to keep moving forward.

When someone is feeling scared, anxious, angry, sad, or when they just need to talk, the emergency room may not be the best answer. The Living Room is designed specifically for individuals in crisis, giving them a safe, cost-effective alternative to hospital emergency departments. This innovative, exciting example of community-based mental healthcare is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, ensuring access to culturally competent, trained clinical and peer support. Additionally, all visitors have the option of being referred to internal programs or services provided by external partner organizations. The Living Room program is offered through partnership with NAMI Metro Suburban.
