Create your own sporting legacyW

HENEVERwe turn onthetelevisionthis summer

it seems there are alwayssporting events beamingback at us.

And what a wonderful sum-mer of sport it’s already been, what with Spain’s classy vic-tory in the Euros and Mur-ray’s near miss in theWimbledon final.

But the big one isundoubtedly the UK’s hostingof this year’s Olympic Gamesand with more than half ofthe UK population admittingin a recent Censuswide sur-vey that they intend to watchsome of the Olympics, oursummer of sport on the box isset to continue.

One drawback to watchingall this sport is that it encour-ages us to sit inside on thecouch and snack, rather thanget out there and experiencesports and activity forourselves.

It’s with this in mind thatthe Department of Healthrecently launched itsGames4Life campaign.

A spin-off from its ongoingChange4Life scheme, the ideais to encourage people acrossthe UK to embrace not justthe Olympics, but the idea ofsport, exercise and lookingafter your health.

The legacy of this year’sOlympics is something thegovernment has been concen-trating on, and Games4Lifeaims to improve the nation’shealth and wellbeing as animportant and lasting legacyof hosting the summer games.

With more than 1,200 hoursof sport being shown on TV

this summer (an average of 13hours a day) Censuswide’srecent survey of our TV view-ing habits suggests that, bythe time the summer ends,93% of people across thecountry will have tuned in towatch at least some of thesport available.

Unfortunately, the survey

also shows that, while we’rewatching the exploits of ath-letes in peak physical condi-tion, over half of us will bemunching crisps, four in tenadults will be sipping somealcohol and one in five will begrabbing a takeaway to enjoywith the action.

However, the idea ofGames4Life isn’t to condemnanybody for knocking back abeer while catching up withthe Olympic football, or forenjoying a takeaway curryduring the athletics finals.

Rather, its aim is to buildon the excitement generatedby this great summer of sportand encourage millions of usto get more active, keep a bet-ter eye on our health and fit-ness and, perhaps, try ourhands at some of the sports

we’ve been watching.As health secretary

Andrew Lansley said: “Play-ing sport can be as much funas watching it and we want tohelp people make the most ofopportunities to get active.”

The Games4Life website isa great place to start:www.nhs.uk/Games4Life. You

can find advice and ideas toget moving, including a freeapp for your mobile phonegiving you ideas for over 100fun family activities.

These include simplegames like hopscotch and jug-gling, to fun-filled activitieslike frisbee golf or den build-ing. You could even string afew ‘events’ together and cre-ate your own mini Olympics.

However, why stop atsimple garden games?

If you or your kids see anOlympic event that you areparticularly fascinated by,why not give it a try? If it’s anathletics event then get intouch with a local athleticsclub and see if it is an eventthey specialise in.

Other sports, like archery, cycling, rowing, fencing, gym-

nastics, hockey, judo, tabletennis and swimming (just forstarters), are all relativelyeasy to get involved in. Justuse the internet to search fora local club and get started.

Your local council shouldbe able to point you in theright direction too. They willbe running many sports clubsand activity sessions fromleisure centres across Mer-seyside. Sefton Council, forexample, are running a seriesof Be Active sessions thissummer from its leisure andactivity centres, all aimed atlocal children.

Find out more at:www.moveitsefton.co.uk.

A great legacy to this sum-mer of sport could be for youto give up smoking. It’s asuperb way to improve yourall round health and well-being and will impact posit-ively on the health of yourfamily too.

It can be a difficult process, but there are organisationsout there who can help you toquit.

See our feature on givingup smoking on page 5 foradvice and who to contact formore information and assist-ance.

Improving your health andwellbeing shouldn’t just besomething you do this sum-mer or during this Olympicyear. Make your Olympic leg-acy a lifestyle change thatbrings about a healthier atti-tude to diet and drinking, anincrease in how active youand your family are, and per-haps you can even use it as aspringboard to help you quitsmoking. A fitting legacy to atruly unforgettable summerof sport.

Getting out inthe fresh airand playinggames, likefootball, withthe wholefamily is funand will helpeverybody toget fit andhealthy

From the oldest to the youngest, there are lots ofactivities to get you moving

Time to kick the habitO

NE of the best ways toimprove your health andwellbeing, and yourfamily’s too, is to give upsmoking. It’s not an easy

process, by any means, but one thatis worth it because of the massivehealth benefits to the body afterquitting.

There is a lot of support available tothose seeking to stop smoking, not leastfrom your local Primary Care Trusts(PCTs).

One good place to start is the NHSwebsite: www.smokefree.nhs.uk whereyou can get a free ‘Quit Kit’ packed fullof practical tools and advice developedwith the help of experts, smokers andex-smokers, alike. It has already helpedthousands of smokers quit successfullyand could work for you too.

So why should you bother to quit? What’s in it for you?

Well, the main reason is to improveyour own health. Smoking takes a realtoll on your body, damaging your lungs, affecting your circulation, causingincreased stress and hitting energylevels hard.

The really good news is, that youshould start feeling the benefits of quit-ting after just a few weeks, as you find iteasier to breathe and take part in phys-

ical activity. Your risk of developing ser-ious illness, such as cancer, heart dis-ease or stroke, is reduced.

You will improve your fertility levelsand you will not be exposing your chil-dren and those around you to second-hand smoke. This will reduce thechances of your children suffering fromrespiratory diseases, meningitis and earinfections.

Plus, there are simpler benefits, likeenjoying the taste of food more and sav-ing perhaps hundreds of pounds. Forexample, a 20-a-day smoker will spendmore than £900 in the next six months.

It will also help to improve yourappearance and you won’t smell of staletobacco. This, in turn, should helpimprove your confidence in social situ-ations.

SUPPORT tohelp you stopSEFTON’S local NHS StopSmoking Service – SUPPORT –is encouraging residents tothink about stoppingsmoking during the summerof sport.

Athletes will be rising tothe challenge of theOlympics in London and, although stopping smokingmay be a challenge, it hasbeen shown that it is thegreatest single step you cantake to improve your health.

Here are some of therewards for when you saygoodbye to cigarettes:

More Energy – Your circu-lation improves within twoto 12 weeks of stopping, making physical activityeasier. The increase in youroxygen levels makes youless tired and also less likelyto have headaches.

Less Stress – Many peoplethink cigarettes help themcope with nerves or stress, but smoking causes yourheart to beat faster andraises blood pressure. Also,by stopping smoking cigar-ettes the improved levels ofoxygen in your body meanthat ex-smokers can concen-trate better and haveincreased mental wellbeing.

Better Breathing –Reduced lung capacity inlater years can result inwheezing when climbing the

stairs or going for a walk. After stopping smoking youwill find you breathe moreeasily and cough lessbecause your lung capacityimproves.

Ron Watt from Maghull, has found his breathing hasimproved since stoppingsmoking with the help ofSUPPORT. “Before quitting,my breathing and snoringwere terrible and I noticed Iwas getting out of breath atwork doing things that tenyears ago would not havebeen a problem for me,”comments Ron, who worksat One Vision Housing inNetherton.

Breathing problems arecaused by damage to thelungs, which can be due tosmoking. These problemscan lead to Chronic Obstruct-ive Pulmonary Disease(COPD), a condition whichhas been highlighted duringthis year’s Breathe EasyWeek.

If you want to know howSUPPORT can help youachieve your goal, just con-tact Healthy Sefton on 0300100 1000 to find yournearest clinic for any of theservice’s start-up sessions. You can contact HealthySefton from 8am to 8pmevery day of the week, including bank holidays.

Huge rewardsfrom simpledietary changeGETTING fit and staying healthy isn’t justabout going out and doing some exercise. We all need to think carefully about whatwe eat and how much we drink. Making justa few simple changes to our diet can bringmassive benefits for our health. TheChange4Life website has a meal plannerand recipe finder with delicious, healthyrecipes that can feed four adults for around£5. Visit the website for inspiration:www.nhs.uk/Change4Life.
