In line with the reform of South Africa’s healthcare system, significant funding is being injected into the upgrade of hospital infrastructure.

Accordingly, there is an attendant focus on sourcing and reviewing materials capable of supporting improved health sector buildings. This includes such aspects as needs determination and sustainability through to energy-efficient design and on-going maintenance of health facilities. All must be delivered with greater speed of construction, flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

The hospitals of tomorrow will be quite different from such facilities of today. In utilising new medical and information technologies, new hospitals will be more welcoming, escaping the institutional feel of yesteryear. Increasingly, modern hospital projects are being influenced by sustainability considerations, with many required to achieve a Green Star rating.

Infection control has become a critical issue as a result of the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria. Whole of life costs are also assuming greater importance, especially in terms of projects constructed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. These developments affect every aspect of hospital design and construction, inclusive of the choice of building materials and finishes.

Light-weight building solutions are increasingly being utilised in the construction of hospital buildings because of their flexibility, environmental benefits, energy efficiency and cost competitiveness.

This document provides an overview of Marley Building Systems’ Plasterboard Building Solutions with regard to a range of interior applications, all commonly found within hospitals and other healthcare buildings. These include:• Acoustics• Sound Absorption Within Spaces• Fire Protection• Wet Areas• Impact Resistance• Attachment Support• Infection Control• Maintenance and Cleaning• X-Rays• Finishing

FIREPROTECTION

In making decisions about the most appropriate methods of fire protection, the specifier must be absolutely sure that the systems selected are both reliable and totally effective.

This is a crucial consideration in terms of design, given that lives and livelihoods are at stake. It is imperative, then, that the correct decisions are made.

Critically, requirements - as set out in Part T of SANS 10400 - must be adhered to, taking into consideration the weak and fragile state of the majority of the occupants of healthcare facilities and their need for assistance and time in the unfortunate event of a fire-related evacuation.

Marley Building Systems offers a wide range of Fire Rated Solutions, all tested for compliance with SANS 10400: Part T: Fire Regulations. All our wall systems have been tested using the methods prescribed in SANS:10177 part II for 30/60/and120 min fire resistance. All the ceiling systems have been certified by rational design.

The systems employ either Siniat Standard Plasterboard or Siniat Firecheck Plasterboard, which are tapered-edge boards available in 12mm (Standard Plasterboard), 12,5mm and 15mm thicknesses. Siniat Firecheck Plasterboard has exfoliated vermiculite and fibreglass strands embedded in the gypsum core, so increasing fire resistance. This product is differentiated by having a pink paper liner.

It is available in 12,5mm and 15mm thicknesses and is recommended for use in areas in which additional fire resistance is required, such as kitchens, record and filing rooms and fire escapes, as well as for specified office partitions.

Against this background, specifiers and installers may be assured of the integrity of Siniat systems when installed exactly to Marley Building Systems specification.

SANS 10400:XA requires that the building envelope be thermally insulated. South Africa is divided into 6 climatic zones and it is required that all non-masonry external walls be compliant to the following minimum thermal resistance:- Zones 1 and 6: 2,2 m²K/W- Zones 2, 3, 4 and 5: 1,9 m²K/W

Ceilings form part of roof assemblies. Marley Building Systems can assist in the calculations of thermal resistance. The typical thermal conductivity of SINIAT plasterboards as determined by SABS testing are given below to assist thermal engineers:- Standard Plasterboard: 0,104 W.m/K- Firecheck Plasterboard: 0,129 W.m/K- Moisture Check Plasterboard: 0,107 W.m/K

Typical thermal resistance values are given for each of the various fire rated systems below to assist designers in finding a fully SABS 10400 compliant solution.

Add zones tables (attached to this document). If layout does not permit it, add the table as an appendix and refer to it in the above text.

ACOUSTICS

Acoustic considerations play an exceptionally important role in creating a necessarily quiet hospital environment, one which is conducive to the recovery and privacy of patients. Such considerations include both sound isolation between spaces and sound absorption within spaces.

• Sound isolation between spaces - According to key results of research studies, as quoted in the IUSS project Health Facility Guides and dated March 2013, high levels of noise have negative physical and psychological effects on patients, disrupting sleep, increasing stress and raising blood pressure levels.

Sound transmission limits and general acoustic properties in general hospitals are required to comply with the SABS 0218, Part 1 Standard (HG “Health Buildings” category). Sound transmission (DnT, w) is determined through tests carried out in accordance with methods detailed in ISO R140 and R717 standards.

Service areas, such as kitchens, elevators, lift machine rooms, laundries, garages, maintenance rooms, boiler and mechanical equipment rooms and similar spaces generating high noise levels must receive the requisite acoustics treatment. Measured sound from ventilation systems should not exceed 40 NRdBA in all rooms and, preferably, not more than 35 NR in operating rooms.

The information provided is intended to enable designers, architects and specifiers to select partitions that meet the acoustic requirements, having made some general assumptions. Marley Building Systems strongly recommends that a qualified acoustic consultant be appointed to check all acoustic specifications and details.

Marley Building Systems offers an extensive range of light-weight wall and ceiling systems that provide various levels of sound isolation. Healthcare buildings in particular are required to pass the most stringent technical standards to receive the necessary regulatory approvals. Siniat Plasterboard is designed to meet these critical technical specifications while ensuring design flexibility. In addition to their “green” attributes, the boards also offer fire and moisture resistance.

SOUND ABSORPTION WITHIN SPACES:

Effective reverberation, or echo control, requires treating room surfaces with sound-absorbing materials. Marley Building Systems offers a number of lightweight lining solutions for such sound absorption.

Excessive reverberation in corridors, entrance halls and stairwells may lead to higher sound levels in such areas. The objective is to effectively absorb sound in these areas, negating the possibility of interference. Generally speaking, corridors, entrance halls and stairwells should be fitted with acoustically-absorbent ceilings and/or acoustically-absorbent materials attached to walls.

Long reverberation times occur in large rooms with high ceilings and with hard wall and ceiling surfaces. By adding acoustic-absorption materials and reducing ceiling heights reduces reverberation time and improves speech intelligibility.

Siniat Acoustic Plasterboard – Pregybel, is perforated plasterboard combining superior sound absorption performance with an aesthetically pleasing design. It is available in 12,5mm x 1200mm x 2400mm configurations.

In areas where the look is considered as important as acoustic performance, Siniat Acoustic Plasterboard - Pregybel’s superior appearance provides an instant answer, bringing the benefits of both acoustics and aesthetics to the fore in areas of large open ceilings and walls.

Its sound absorption performance assists in creating a wonderful acoustic ambience, ideal for hospital environments where patient recuperation and recovery is critical.

A further benefit of this solution is the ease of installation, the result of a protective glass mat, which is glued to the back of the board, thus preventing dust emissions. This protective mat enables a simple and cost-effective one-step installation process, saving time and increasing on-site productivity.

IMPACT RESISTANCEImpact damage to wall surfaces adds significantly to maintenance costs during the lifetime of a hospital building.

Hospital corridors are particularly susceptible to knocks by trolleys and beds being rapidly moved about, as well as by general traffic. Such walls, therefore, require the use of impact-resistant lining materials. Siniat High Impact Plasterboard solution has been specifically designed for use in busy high-traffic areas, such as hospital corridors.

The solution comprises a 12,5mm Siniat Firecheck Board T/E, lined with a 2,5mm Superflex vinyl sheeting, a fully flexible, durable sheeting suitable for use in healthcare.

The emergence of new strains of drug-resistant bacteria has necessitated the strengthening of infection control measures in hospitals.

Internal surfaces and finishes are considered integral to the overall management of infection control risk in healthcare buildings.

The IUSS Project document highlights the correct selection of wall finishes as the most critical of the three dimensions of wall, floor and ceiling. This is because walls are most likely to be touched by hospital occupants and wall finishes must, therefore play a role in infection prevention and control.

Siniat Plasterboard ceilings and walls, used together with Superflex Vinyl Materials, offer the easy-to-clean, smooth and seamless surface finishes necessary for effective infection control.

The solution comprises Siniat Firecheck Plasterboard lined with 1,5mm Superflex vinyl sheeting (fully flexible, durable sheeting suitable for use in healthcare), using a suitable quick-setting contact adhesive. All joints are to be sealed with vinyl weld using a heat gun.

If Siniat 102mm Load bearing Stud, 15mm Firecheck Plasterboards and 2,5mm Superflex sheeting are used in the solution above, the wall will be able to withstand severe impact.

INFECTION CONTROL AND HIGH PRESSURE CLEANING

Ease of repair and maintenance is an important consideration when selecting hospital wall and ceiling linings. Hospital walls are often subject to impact from stretchers and general traffic. The use of appropriate Siniat partitioning and ceiling solutions can reduce the risk of damage and thus the maintenance costs over the lifetime of a hospital. Siniat’s exposed grid ceilings and access hatch provide an effective solution where equipment and services need to be accessible for maintenance purposes.

The issue of cleaning is connected to infection prevention & control, therefore materials selected for use should be robust in order to withstand regular cleaning

VINYL CEILING TILESSiniat ceiling tiles are a range of ready to use plasterboard ceiling tiles available in various patterns and textures.

The Siniat Ceiling Tiles are superb for modern building decoration without further painting and are easy to keep clean. Available in square edge or revealed edge for lay-in ceiling installations.

Marley Building Systems has established a reputation for high quality ceiling tiles. These tiles are manufactured with our quality Siniat plasterboard. When coupled with our Gridlock ceiling grid, the solution provides a high quality aesthetic ceiling that is quick and easy to install.

SUPPORT STRUCTURETo ensure a high standard of finish, it is essential that the supporting structure is accurate and sound. Additional supports are required at positions of light fittings. Air conditioners/ventilating equipment are not to be supported from ceiling grid and must have their own support system.

Siniat Plasterboard consists of an aerated gypsum core firmly bonded on both sides with a special plasterboard liner. These characteristics of gypsum provide plasterboard with outstanding advantages over other flat sheet materials.

GENERAL DESIGN CRITERIAMarley Building Systems has established a reputation for high quality ceiling tiles.

The information contained in this brochure serves as a general guide. Architects, engineers and specifiers must approve the final design and construction criteria, as well as other implications on site.

SUPPORTING STRUCTURETo ensure a high standard of finish, it is essential that the supporting structure is accurate and sound. Additional supports are required at positions of light fittings. Air conditioners/ventilating equipment must not to be supported from ceiling grid and must have their own independent support system. (This paragraph appears above).

FIXING ACCESSORIESA complete range of Siniat Ceiling Grid ceiling tees is available. Please

refer to the Siniat Ceiling Grid part of this brochure. Hold down clips must be used in areas where wind updraft could cause tiles to lift, or where light tiles will be used, <3kg.

Plasterboard is finished using plaster compounds, with either a final float finish or sanded surface being achieved before finally painting for the attainment of a smooth and even appearance.

No building lining system has a surface which is perfectly flat and imperfection-free.

However, by paying close attention to framing, plasterboard sheet orientation, paint finishes and lighting conditions, it is possible to attain the perception of flatness. The range of plaster compounds, when applied to specification, will further assist in achieving finishes as specified.
