Libraries and Cultural Resources and the Health Sciences Library has recently acquired
an outstanding addition from Dr. Robert Gordon. The Mackie Family History of
Neuroscience Collection will be housed in the History of Medicine room in the newly renovated
Health Sciences Library. Some volumes, for conservation reasons, will need to reside in
Special Collections at the Taylor Family Digital Library. This collection of nearly 2500 books
and journal articles spans over 350 years in the development of neuroscience and is of
national and international significance. The earliest volume is Jean Fernel’s De Abditis Rerum
Causis Libri Duo. Editio postrema, published in 1560 by Andream Wechel, Paris. Other
highlights include Rene Descartes’s classic 1662 work, De Homine, and the rare first
neurological text, Cerebri Anatome, published in 1662, written by Thomas Willis, the “Father of
Neurology” and illustrated by Christopher Wren.

Dr. Robert Gordon is a Houston-based retired neurologist and distinguished collector of history and
neurology and neuroscience books. He was in practice in Houston, Texas for 35 years, and was a
Clinical Associate Professsor of neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. His
passion for history of medicine books reaches back almost as long as his career as a practicing
physician, and his private collection developed into more than 2,500 items.
Dr. Gordon’s incentive to collect books began in 1978, when he answered a newspaper ad from a
professor and physician at Columbia University selling books. This physician and professor was the
late Fred Mettler, M.D. who had a distinguished career as a neuroanatomist, neurophysiologist and
clinical neurologist at the New York Neurological Institute. Dr. Gordon’s interest in first depictions of
neurological diagnoses provided incentive to pursue a successful career as a book collector.
The Mackie Family History of Neuroscience Collection complements education programs in
neuroscience, history of medicine, and related disciplines, strongly supports the research enterprise
at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and heightens the status of the University of Calgary as an
international centre for neuroscience research.

The National Library of
Medicine announced the
activation of the
Emergency Access
Initiative in support of
medical efforts in
Pakistan.
The Emergency Access
Initiative is a
collaborative partnership
between NLM and
participating publishers.
This collaboration is to
provide free access to
full-text articles from
over 230 biomedical
serial titles and over 60
reference books and
online databases to
healthcare professionals
and libraries affected by
disasters. While the
project was established
to assist libraries
affected by disasters in
the United States, NLM
and the publishers are
activating the
Emergency Access
Initiative in light of the
growing healthcare
issues developing in the
aftermath of widespread
flooding in Pakistan.

Open Access & Copyright -What Grad Students Need to Know, will be presented by Mary Westell and Wendy Stephens.
What is Open Access?
Open Access (OA) is perhaps the most important development in scholarly communications in recent years. Generally
speaking, Open Access content is scholarly material that is freely available on the World Wide Web. It is free to access
for the reader; there are no subscriptions or pay-per-view fees. It is also normally free of most licensing and copyright
restrictions. The term usually applies to journal articles but it is increasingly being applied to other formats (e.g.
monographs, reference works, data). For more information: http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/for-faculty/open-
