AFTERNOON CONCURRENT SESSIONS

SESSION A 12:45 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. CHOOSE ONE

PSHSA will briefly overview the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements regarding workplace violence and harassment followed by a more detailed exploration of workplace civility by Safe Management Group (SMG). SMG will examine common issues in the workplace such as incivility and how this impacts work performance and job satisfaction. SMG will teach how to recognize various forms of incivility and effective communication skills that will promote a culture of respect and civility among employees.

Conducting effective workplace inspections plays a vital role in identifying potential hazards that may be present in a workplace. Understanding the types of hazards and the degree of risk also helps organizations complete hazard risk assessments and develop proactive risk management strategies.

This session will provide an opportunity to identify potential hazards by inspecting several common areas found in healthcare, education and municipal workplaces all in the comfort of the classroom. You will conduct a virtual workplace inspection using the tools provided to increase your knowledge and to improve your inspection skills. This session is ideal for employers, supervisors and Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) result from excessive strain on the body and are the number one workplace injury in the province of Ontario, accounting for 44% of lost time injuries, costing billions of dollars. Attend this workshop to learn about common MSD hazards and how to control them from a member of the PSHSA ergonomic team. You will also observe the application of ergonomics by walking through an example of a housekeeping/cleaner job.

Come with your own workplace ergonomics questions that will be answered within the workshop (as time permits). With knowledge to recognize hazards and through ergonomics controls, you will be ready to reduce the risk of MSD in your workplace.

SESSION B 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. CHOOSE ONE

The JHSC has power and responsibility to contribute to the health and safety program at a workplace. Due to a lack of knowledge or confidence, many committees are not realizing their full potential to address workplace health and safety issues. Attend this session to discuss characteristics of effective and ineffective committees. Share what is working well for your JHSC and learn from others. The session will explore how JHSCs may unintentionally sabotage the IRS. Tools and resources to support your JHSC will be provided and you will have the opportunity to develop an action plan to increase the effectiveness of your JHSC.

Progress has been made in decreasing accidents and illness related to risks posed by workplace conditions or worker behaviours, but what about the protection of workers’ psychological (mental) health and safety (PH&S) in the workplace?

Attend this session to learn about psychological health and safety, and a tool the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) has introduced to assist employers to protect the mental health of employees. The action guide will also offer information on the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. This voluntary standard for workplace mental health will be released later this year by the MHCC, in collaboration with the Bureau de Noramalisation du Québec and the CSA.

This session will look at a methodical way of addressing one of the most significant hazards in the workplace, the slip. Through a simple detailed analysis, we can focus on reducing slips in the workplace. This new approach will examine all the factors from the ground up, and determine what can be controlled and what cannot. You will walk away safely with a new approach to resolving an old challenge.
