Sumba IkatWOVEN FABRIC

Begitu banyak seni wastra di Indonesia, salah satunya tenun. Dan yang kini semakin popular adalah tenun ikat Sumba. Kerumitan proses pembuatan, corak,

dan kualitasnya membuat tenunan ini tak hanya menjadi kebanggaan Nusantara, namun memiliki reputasi mendunia.

Corak kaya CeriTaBagi masyarakat Nusa Tenggara pada umumnya dan Sumba pada khususnya, tenun melambangkan warisan budaya bernilai tinggi dan terwakili dalam setiap corak, yang masing-masing memiliki “cerita”. Motif yang kerap muncul dalam tenun Sumba antara lain: • ayam. Dahulu, kokok ayam adalah menjadi lambang

pengingat waktu bagi masyarakat Sumba.• kuda. Tak hanya melambangkan sarana transportasi, kuda

juga menjadi simbol status masyarakat Sumba.• Burung, ruSa, ular, kura-kura, dan Buaya. Fauna

ini merupakan simbol para raja, bangsawan, dan penguasa.• TomBak. Melambangkan senjata yang pada masa lampau

digunakan untuk mengusir penjajah.Ada pula tenun dengan corak yang bercerita, salah

satunya tentang kehidupan manusia mulai dari sejak dikandung, dilahirkan, masa kanak-kanak, dewasa, tua, hingga akhirnya meninggal.

Tenun SeBagai Penanda Selain sebagai lambang seni, tenun juga memiliki fungsi sosial, ekonomi, dan religius, antara lain digunakan sebagai busana adat, pembungkus jenazah, bekal kubur, tanda hubungan kekeluargaan, harta benda, alat tukar menukar, dan barang hadiah. Sesuai fungsinya, tenun memiliki warna berbeda-beda dengan makna dan fungsi tersendiri. Untuk upacara pernikahan biasanya digunakan tenun warna terang atau merah, sedangkan untuk upacara kematian cenderung digunakan warna hitam atau biru. Sementara untuk upacara adat lain, bisa memakai tenun warna apa saja.

The variety of Indonesian textiles is so great, among others the woven fabric. One of them that is now getting more and more popular is the Sumba woven

fabric, known as Ikat. The intricacy of its process, the richness of motifs and its high quality is not only the pride of Indonesia, but has also gained world reputation.

STory Telling moTifSFor the people of Nusa Tenggara as a whole and especially Sumba, woven fabrics are high quality legacies from their ancestors. Every motif has a “story” behind it. The most popular motifs in Sumba’s Ikat are: • Hensandcocks. In the past, the crow of cocks is a

time reminder for the Sumba people.• horSeS. horses not only symbolize a mode

transportation but also serve as a status symbol for the people.

• BirdS, deerS, SnakeS, TurTleS, and CroCodileS. These animals are the symbols of kings, the nobility, leaders.

• SPearS, which symbolize weapons. In the old days spears and sharpened bamboos were used to fight colonial domination. There are also fabrics which tell stories, among others

stories about a human being’s phases of life: in the womb, being born, childhood, adult life, old age, and finally, dead.

funCTionSBesides being works of art, woven fabrics also have social, economical, and religious functions, among others used as a traditional attire, a wrap for the dead, supplies inside the grave, a token of family ties, possessions, exchangeable goods, and gifts.

Ikat has a variety of colors according to function and meaning. For weddings bright colors are used, while for deaths the appropriate colors are black or blue. For other traditional functions, all colors can be used.

In the old days, a piece of Ikat took quite a long time to finish, almost a year. Cotton was reaped in July, spinning was done in July-September, preparation of patterns and weaving board started in September-December. The process of looking for indigo and Kombu (the reddish color from the bark of a tree) and the coloring of threads took place in January till May. In August, weaving started and lasted for several months.

TyPeS and PurPoSeS of ikaT.There are several types of Sumba Ikats, based on size and function: • Hinggi. A big sized ikat, used as exchanged goods in traditional ceremonies. Also used as a man’s attire. hinggi usually comes in pairs, one piece is worn around the waist and the other placed on the shoulder. hinggi for the nobility is even bigger, dominated by red and indigo. The color and motif of a hinggi is used as a sign of status, for the giver as well as receiver. The motifs among others: horses, cocks, deers, snakes, and shrimps. Motifs of a Skull Tree and mamuli are also often found as signs of high status. • lau, a wrap skirt for women. Although the motifs in a hinggi can also be found in a lau, lau has a more intricate method of weaving, which combines Ikat with embroidery, even beads. Usually a lau is dark blue, red, brown, or black in color. There are two kinds: lau pahudu which uses the warp technique and lau hada which is embellished with beads. • Tiara. Tiara is a narrow cloth. There are two kinds of tiara: the wide Tiara haringgi to be placed on the shoulder and the narrow Tiara to be used as a headdress.

SeruPa namun BerBeda Sumba Timur dan Sumba Barat memiliki kekuatan kain tenun yang berbeda. Jika kain tenun Sumba Timur tampak ramai dengan motif-motif yang unik dan rumit dengan dominasi pola motif faunanya, maka kain tenun Sumba Barat justru menggambarkan hal yang sebaliknya.

Kain tenun Sumba Barat mencerminkan kesederhanaan yang dihiasi dengan garis-garis halus indigo. permukaannya polos tanpa ornamen, hanya di bagian bawah dan atas yang dihiasi gambar-gambar simetris seperti kotak dan segitiga yang dikombinasikan menyerupai bunga.

Dahulu, pembuatan tenun Sumba memakan waktu hingga hampir setahun. Mulai dari kapas dipanen pada bulan Juli, pemintalan kapas bulan Juli-September, diikuti proses mempersiapkan pola serta papan tenun yang berlangsung mulai bulan September-Desember. proses pencarian Indigo dan Kombu (warna kemerahan yang diperoleh dari batang pohon) dan pewarnaan benang berlangsung Januari hingga Mei. pada bulan Agustus, proses menenun dimulai selama beberapa bulan.

Tenun berukuran besar yang digunakan sebagai alat pertukaran dalam upacara adat dan sebagai pakaian laki-laki. hinggi biasanya dibuat sepasang, satu lembar dikenakan melingkari pinggang dan lembar lainnya disampirkan pada bahu. hinggi untuk para bangsawan biasanya berukuran lebih besar, didominasi warna merah dan biru indigo. Warna dan motif hinggi berfungsi sebagai penanda status, baik bagi pemberi maupun penerima hinggi. Di masa lalu, hinggi hanya boleh digunakan oleh para bangsawan. Motifnya antara lain: kuda, ayam jantan, kijang, ular, ikan, dan udang. Kerap pula ditemui motif seperti pohon Tengkorak dan mamuli yang menjadi penanda status seseorang di masyarakat.• Lau. Rok lilit yang dikenakan oleh perempuan. Meski motif yang muncul pada hinggi juga ada pada lau, namun lau memiliki teknik tenun yang lebih rumit, mengombinasikan ikat dengan bordir bahkan manik-manik. Biasanya berwarna biru gelap, merah, coklat, dan hitam. Ada dua jenis lau: lau pahudu yang menggunakan teknik lungsi dan lau hada dengan manik-manik. • Tiara. Tenun ini berbentuk kain tidak lebar yang tersedia dalam dua jenis: Tiara haringgi adalah Tiara lebih lebar untuk disampirkan di pundak, dan Tiara yang lebih sempit untuk ikat kepala.

Arnold Poernomo (27) dicap sebagai salah satu juri yang mengintimidasi. Padahal, di balik citra ‘dingin’ itu, tersimpan passion yang besar terhadap dunia masak-memasak.

Suka ngajarin orang “Selama masih dipercaya, I don’t think I will stop,” ucap pria kelahiran Surabaya itu mengenai keterlibatannya sebagai juri. Ditemui di sela-sela proses taping salah satu episode MasterChef Indonesia Season 4 di Studio 4 RCTI, 20 Mei 2015 lalu, Arnold juga mengungkapkan tak hanya kecintaannya pada dunia masak-memasak yang membuatnya bertahan di sana, namun juga kesempatan untuk menjadi mentor bagi para kontestan. Ia terutama paling senang, bila kontestan-kontestan yang telah ia bimbing berhasil jadi pemenang.

Kesenangan itu bertambah berkali lipat saat menjadi juri Junior MasterChef Indonesia, dengan kontestan anak-anak berusia 8-13 tahun. Ia selalu berusaha memberikan komentar atau penilaian yang bernada positif kepada mereka.

Namun untuk kontestan dewasa, Arnold memilih untuk bersikap apa adanya. Penilaian sebuah masakan ia lakukan berdasarkan logika. “Kalau mereka tidak bisa terima, ya… sorry saja. It’s not my problem, it’s their problem. All I want to do is for them to do better,” ungkapnya.

Pendekatan itu sepertinya membekas di mata para kontestan. Afaf, Revo, Zidan, Curt, dan Chacha dari Junior MasterChef Indonesia, misalnya, masih terus keep in touch dengannya melalui SMS, Whatsapp, maupun pertemuan langsung. Pemenang MasterChef Indonesia Season 3, William Gozali, juga kerap meminta bimbingannya mengenai karir di dunia kuliner. “I’m very open,” ujar Arnold. “Mereka mau minta resep juga, akan saya kasih.”

Cook, bukan Chef Meski namanya kian bersinar terang di kancah industri kuliner Indonesia, sebetulnya Arnold awalnya tidak berniat menjadi seorang koki. Memang, keluarganya merupakan pencinta masak dan memiliki restoran, namun pemilik Restoran Nomz Kitchen & Pastry di Grand Indonesia, Jakarta, ini sebetulnya kecemplung di dunia kuliner secara tidak sengaja.

Ketika berusia 14 tahun, Arnold -yang sejak umur 10 tahun pindah ke Sydney, Australia, bersama keluarganya- kerja sampingan menjadi tukang cuci piring di sebuah kafe untuk mencari uang jajan tambahan. Di tempat itulah, ia belajar memasak serta manajemen restoran. Banyak pula yang tidak tahu, bahwa Arnold bukanlah chef lulusan sekolah kuliner. Ia hanya seorang koki lulusan SMA yang belajar dunia masak secara otodidak.

Dalam menciptakan suatu masakan yang baru, proses kreatif Arnold cukup sederhana. Ia biasanya mengambil inspirasi dari bahan-bahan mentah atau masakan lain yang sudah ada. Dari sana, ia berusaha memadukan rasa lalu membuat perubahan dan penyesuaian di sana-sini, sehingga akhirnya tercipta suatu masakan yang benar-benar baru.

Not in terms of using minimal flavor, but the food did not create nausea effect after consumed. “Indeed Asian and Indonesian dish have a lot of flavors. But there is no harm if we made the protein ingredients also ‘stand out and prominent’, not only the spices,” he explained.

COOKING WITH PLEASURE: SPILLS AND SPLASH CLEANUP IN A FLASH

When you are in a cooking frenzy, you may not realize the extent of spills and splash on your pots and pans, your stove or even the floor and the walls.

Here are some tricks to keep your kitchen spick and span.

POTS AND PANS Wash your pot as soon as you are done with it. Do not submerge the pan in water, the residual material will sip back into the pot, especially the odor. Wash the pan in running water or spray water, use dish soap with a strong citric aroma to cleanse the smell of food. Wipe dry. Do not stack pots and pans, it is best to hang them to dry.

KNIVESClean and wash your knives straight away after each use. Your knife will become dull and rusty if you leave bits of food on it for too long. A solution of cold water and vinegar should be used to clean rusty stains.

Dengan kostum spesial, sejumlah 20 anak dari TKK 11 Penabur terlihat siap tampil untuk menyanyikan dua buah lagu. Inilah seremoni pembukaan yang

manis pada acara “Fun Kids Easter Celebration Event” yang diselenggarakan Ranch Market bekerja sama dengan Sumber Buah Alam, Kellogg’s, dan Sunflower’s. Acara ini berlangsung 24 April 2015 lalu di Ranch Market Pesanggrahan.

Kreasi Tanpa BatasDipandu MC dan Chef Michael, anak-anak pun diarahkan terlebih dulu untuk memahami cara pembuatan Chocolate Ball dan salah satu dari mereka dengan mantap maju ke depan menjadi volunteer untuk membantu Chef Michael. Segera setelah itu, dengan antusias masing-masing anak membuat sendiri Chocolate Ball.

Keseruan masih terus berlanjut pada kegiatan lomba menghias telur. Secara apik, tangan-tangan kecil berkreasi menggunakan peralatan dari Sunflower’s dan berhasil membuat ragam karya yang kreatif. Sambil menunggu para juri menilai karya hiasan telur, anak-anak dipersilahkan menikmati Chocolate Ball olahan mereka sendiri plus sepiring Kellogg’s Coco Loops. “Wah, enak!” ujar salah satu anak sambil mengacungkan ibu jarinya kepada MC.

Setelah kegiatan kuis berhadiah mengenai buah-buah import berkualitas dari Sumber Buah Alam, momen pengumuman pemenang lomba menghias telur pun tiba. Angelin, Jessica, dan Ricardo, meraih juara I, II dan III, memenangkan voucher belanja Ranch Market.

Dua jam sungguh tak terasa, keriaan siang itu pun ditutup dengan penyerahan sertifikat dan goodie bag untuk setiap peserta yang dilanjutkan dengan foto bersama. Happy Easter..!

Wearing special costumes, twenty kids from Kindergarten 11 Penaburconfidently presented two songs. This is the cute opening ceremony of the

event “Fun Kids Easter Celebration” held by Ranch Market in cooperation with Sumber Buah Alam, Kellog’s and Sunflower’s. This event took place in Pesanggrahan Ranch Market.

Unlimited CreativityBy Michael, Chef and MC, the children were first of all led to understand how to make Chocolate Balls. One of them boldly volunteered to be Chef Michael’s assistant. After that, each of them made their own Chocolate Balls.

The excitement continued with the egg decorating contest. The little fingers skillfully showed their creativity, using tools from Sunflower’s, and created their own decorated eggs. While waiting for the judges to deliberate and decide the winners, the kids were urged to enjoy their own Chocolate Balls plus Kellog’s Coco Loops. “Mmmm, yummy!” one of the kids exclaimed, showing his thumb to the MC.

After the launch of a prized quiz about quality imported fruits from Sumber Buah Alam, the results of the egg decoration contest was announced. Angelin, Jessica, and Ricardo became the first, second, and third winner. Each got a shopping voucher from Ranch Market.

Two hours passed very quickly, the happy afternoon was closed by the presentation of certificates and goodie bags to each participant, followed by a photo session. Happy Easter…!
