(StatePoint) You may not realize it, but your sugar consumption has likely increased over the last several years. Beyond what you add to your coff ee or the occasional sweet treat, you may be getting hidden sugar from an ar-ray of processed foods, such as ketchup and salad dressing. Even conventional baby food contains added sugar. And all those additions can be troubling to your health, say experts.

“Sugar is directly linked to obesity, tooth de-cay, diabetes, fatigue, headaches, arthritis, ad-renal burnout and physiological or emotional problems such as ADHD and PMS,” says Dr. Steve Weston, Director of Ambassador Rela-tions/Nutrition Expert of Sunwarrior, a pro-ducer of raw, plant-based supplements.

For improved health, here are several ways to become more mindful about your sugar consumption:

• Th ere are many names and forms of sugar so learning to read food labels helps. Gener-ally speaking, if an ingredient ends with the suffi x -ose, then it’s a sugar.

• Keep the sugar off the table and in the pantry. You’ll be less likely to add it to your meals. Th at being said, there are plenty of foods that you may be adding sugar to that are already sugary on their own -- from cereal to fresh fruit. Once you get used to the natural taste of these foods, you won’t miss the added spoonful.

• Don’t use artifi cial sweeteners. While it may seem natural to reach for an artifi cial sweet-ener when you’re attempting to cut back on the real deal, it’s a grave mistake. Most artifi -cial sweeteners actually increase cravings for

sugary foods. If you do need a boost of sweet-ness, stick to more healthful whole food op-tions, such as honey, date sugar, coconut sugar and pure organic maple syrup.

• Seek out sweet fl avors, while reaping the benefi ts of plant-based proteins with a pro-tein blend such as Sunwarrior Protein, an easily digestible nutrient-fi lled superfood that tastes great and has zero grams of sugar and no unhealthy additives.

“A healthy protein powder can ensure you’re getting a complete array of the essential amino acids needed to build and repair muscle, drive metabolism, keep skin young and elastic, build and balance hormones and carry out a host of other processes by allowing the body to create the right enzymes,” says Dr. Weston.

Using low temperatures, enzymes, whole grains and superfoods, Sunwarrior’s unique process creates plant-based proteins that are silky smooth, mix well in smoothies, water, almond milk, coconut milk, shakes and other beverages, taste great and supply all the essen-tial amino acids your body craves. More infor-mation can be found at www.Sunwarrior.com.

• Pay attention to your skin, which is a refl ec-tion of your health and the quality of your nutrition. If you consume too much sugar, particularly from processed foods, a chemical reaction can form a rogue molecule known as an advanced glycation endproduct. Undesir-able eff ects include wrinkles and droopy skin.

By learning more about the foods you eat and making wise choices, you can reduce your sugar intake without missing out on fl avor.

Reducing Your Sugar Intake Can Make You Feel Better

Reducing your sugar intake can support a healthy, active lifestyle.

(StatePoint) For the health conscious, there’s no such thing as a summer vacation from making good nutritional choices and getting plenty of exercise. But there’s no reason to let a healthy lifestyle become boring.

Here are three ways to let the summer season guide your routine:• Mix Up Movement: After months of indoor exercise, you may be ready for a change of scenery. And summer is the ideal time to take a break from the treadmill and incorpo-rate different types of movement and exercise into your life-style. So ditch the gym this weekend and head for greener pastures. From row boating to hiking, you‚Äôll find your-self activating different muscles than you normally would by mixing things up.

• Eat In-Season Produce: Take advantage of the summer har-vest and plan meals around in-season produce. The USDA lists apples, beets, bell peppers, kiwifruit, carrots, garlic, peaches, okra and cherries, amongst many more fruits and vegetables that reach their peak in the summer months. These items are a chock full of vitamins and nutrients and taste their best in summer.

• Summer Sun: Beyond the Vitamin D factor, a study pub-lished in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology shows that sunlight may lower blood pressure, which could reduce one‚Äôs risk for heart attack and stroke. Some researchers now say the benefits of sunlight could outweigh cancer risks associated with exposure. Don‚Äôt forget to take the usual precautions, how-ever. Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat to protect against harmful UV radiation.

(StatePoint) Chances are you’ve already heard about the benefits of including certified USDA organic foods in your diet. However, you may have also heard that such choices are typically higher in cost.

“Eating right is in easier reach of Americans than ever before,” says Kate Geagan, America’s Green Nutritionist and expert consultant for Earth’s Best, the first organic baby food brand, in business for nearly 30 years. “Organic options are becoming more affordable and accessible thanks to many big retailers.”

Looking to go organic? Geagan offers simple cost-cutting shopping strategies:• Prioritize where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck. One of the most important places to start is with animal products, as certified organic meat, poultry and dairy products do not contain added synthetic growth hormones and antibiot-ics. An added benefit — organic products pro-hibit the use of genetically modified organisms.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans includes 5 to 7-ounces of lean protein daily for adults and 2-ounces daily for children. Make purchases less wasteful and more cost effective by keeping these recommended portions in mind.

• Avoid Environmental Working Groups’ “Dirty Dozen,” the 12 conventional fruits and vegeta-bles that typically contain the highest levels of pesticide residues. Many of these foods, which include apples and potatoes, are family staples. So purchase these items organic if possible and thoroughly wash produce and remove the peel to reduce pesticide residue.

• The farmers market is one of the most afford-able resources for in-season, local food.

Also, purchase raw organic produce during its peak season, when supply is up and cost is down. Buy in bulk and freeze excess batches to extend shelf-life without significantly im-pacting nutritional value.

• Follow your favorite organic brands on social media to maximize deals and scout for bargains. Many organic brands run promotions, coupons and special offers that can help you buy more and spend less. Depending on the item, you can stock up during a sale and freeze for later.

• One area where the benefit of organic is well proven is for infants and children: that’s because these are windows for rapid growth and development.

Make smart purchases. A 4-ounce jar of or-ganic baby food can often be cheaper than a 4-ounce pouch, and has a longer shelf life. For example, Earth’s Best offers organic jars for ba-bies four to six months old, starting at $0.99. Once opened, keep baby food jars and pouches refrigerated. Jars should be used within three days, and pouches within 24 hours.• In the past few years, organics have truly moved mainstream: 80 percent of households now purchase organic items at least some of the time, according to recent surveys from the Organic Trade Association. Many big box re-tailers, such as Walmart, Target and Kroger, now carry USDA organic products at low prices for babies, toddlers and older children, including baby food jars, pouches and frozen products from brands like Earth’s Best. More nutrition tips and organic products can be found at EarthsBest.com.

With simple strategies, you can feed your fam-ily organic and stay within budget.
