SUMMER TIMEBy Sidney H.

I feel the heat of the sun and I hear the birds in the trees What a wonderful sight with the birds and the bees I hear the birds in the trees singing with glee Oh summertime, oh summertime how great can it be

See If You Are “Tire Smart”

A recent national survey found that only one in six U.S. drivers is “tire smart” when it comes to checking tire pressure-a quick and simple step that can optimize vehicle safety and fuel economy and helps tires last lon-ger.

Gender & Generation Gap

Signifi cant differences exist between men and women and also among younger and older drivers.

Men are more likely than women to be “tire smart,” according to the survey. About 20 percent of men and 14 percent of women are considered “tire smart.” That means fewer women know to check tire pressure month-ly and to check tires when they are cold (before driving). Women know better than men where to fi nd the correct tire pressure for their vehicle: on the driver’s doorjamb or door and in the owner’s manual.

A more stark difference exists between generations. Twenty-seven per-cent of drivers aged 60 and older are “tire smart” while only 8 percent of drivers 18 to 39 know the basic tips for properly checking tire pressure. The survey was conducted for the Rubber Manufacturers Association, which represents tire manufacturers in the U.S.

Underinfl ated tires pose a safety risk, waste fuel and cause premature tire wear. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that properly infl ated tires can save about 11 cents a gallon at today’s gas prices.

Motorists can Be Tire Smart and Play Your PART.

Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge and infl ate to ve-hicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear.

Rotation: Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear.

Tread: Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions. - (NAPSI)

Recent health care changes may offer more Americans access to ma-jor medical coverage, but consumers should be aware of the effect that out-of-pocket health care costs will continue to have on their

bank accounts. Consumers may fi nd themselves fi nancially unprepared for an unexpected illness or injury if they do not understand all aspects of the cost of medical care.

The U.S. government predicts that household out-of-pocket health care expenses will reach an average of $3,301 per year by 2014; yet, the 2013 Afl ac WorkForces Report (AWR) fi nds that only 23 percent of workers are saving more money in anticipation of medical expense increases.

Due to rising health care costs, employers are likely to shift more of the share to their employees—which can mean higher copayments, deduct-ibles and premiums-to try to limit company spending on health benefi ts.

“Major medical insurance was never designed to cover everything,” said Manisha Thakor, personal fi nance expert. “Benefi ts packages don’t cover copays, co-insurance or necessary medical supplies, among other things, and the true cost of accidents and illnesses can be staggering.”

There are also expenses that continue—like rent or a car payment—when people have an illness or injury that prevents them from working. This could mean costs higher than people anticipate.

Consumers can prepare themselves for the unexpected by following this simple, four-step plan:

1. Take advantage of employer-sponsored wellness programs. Not only will consumers feel better as a result of taking proactive steps to improve health and wellness, but participating could lower insurance rates, depend-ing on insurance plans.

2. Go to preventative care checkups once or twice yearly. Taking action to offset potential problems down the road helps minimize the chance of illness or poor health escalating into a costly condition.

3. Increase your savings rate. According to the AWR, most people aren’t saving enough. Nearly half (46 percent) of American workers have less than $1,000 in savings, which may not cover costs associated with serious illnesses or accidents. Now more than ever, it’s important to prepare for out-of-pocket health care expenses.

4. Talk to HR to understand medical insurance coverage. Consumers can stay involved in benefi ts decisions by educating themselves on what’s available. They should turn to HR representatives for clarity if they are uncertain about insurance offerings and also consider voluntary insurance to fi ll gaps in coverage. (NAPSI)

For many high school graduates, the path to a professional career will take them to technical schools and community colleges, where they

can be trained for good-paying jobs in as little as two years.

Thousands of technical jobs remain unfi lled due to the lack of skilled la-bor. In fact, according to Businessweek.com, there are more than 600,000 manufacturing jobs alone that remain vacant because people don’t have the necessary skills required to do them.

Certifi cation

To help close this labor gap, many technical schools and community colleges across the country partner with Snap-on Incorporated to teach specifi c disciplines designed to give students a leg up on the competition when they enter the workforce. Snap-on, a leading manufacturer of tools, equipment and diagnostics for the transportation, aviation/aerospace and manufacturing sectors, has developed certifi cation programs for students to receive extra training in certain technical disciplines.

These certifi cations are offered in automotive scanner diagnostics, diesel scanner diagnostics, mechanical and electronic torque, multimeter, wheel service and alignment, asset management and tool control, horticulture, and building perfor-mance. More than 70 technical schools across the country offer certifi cations as part of their curriculum. Since 2007, about 10,000 certifi cations have been earned by more than 5,500 students, in-cluding 538 this past spring.

The goal of the certifi cations is not to teach how a vehicle operates or how an aircraft fl ies; rather, it is to teach technicians the proper and best way to use specifi c tools and equipment to become more productive in

their jobs.

Snap-on certifi cations provide an across-the-board standard for the partnering technical schools to provide in-depth instruction on tool use, theory and application. The certifi cations are not add-ons, but rather are integrated into the existing courses offered by the partnering schools. Cer-tifi cations include about 16 hours of instruction, and are blended into the school’s course programming.

Advantages To Students, Technicians and Teachers

There are many advantages for students to participate. For starters, it makes them more well-rounded technicians. Students who become certi-fi ed in a specifi c course have a better understanding of the tools and equip-ment used in that discipline, making them more productive for employers.

Second, students who have earned certifi cations are more employable than those without them. Certifi cations give them an advantage on the competition. Finally, students can now enter the workforce with industry-recognized certifi cations.

Certifi cations aren’t just limited to students as seasoned technicians can also benefi t from them. As skilled labor continues to become more com-plex, it’s imperative that technicians on the job today maintain their skills and stay abreast of tool technology in their profession.

Snap-on has also worked to develop and improve the support offered to partner schools. Teachers are taught standardized approaches on how to train their students, ensuring that curriculum is delivered in a consistent format nationwide. - (NAPSI)
