At birth, a baby kangaroo is smaller than a cherry and must crawl up a saliva path the mother licks through her fur. Once secure in the pouch, the joey attaches to a teat for the next seven to 10 months as it develops in the pouch. After emerging from the pouch, joeys nurse for another year. Reform A Focus Of National School Choice Week

Over 3,500 special events will be used to create what’s being described as the world’s largest-ever celebration of education reform.

School choice supporters plan to hold rallies, roundtable discussions, educational film screenings, school fairs and other events as part of the third annual National School Choice Week, Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2013.

The events are independently planned by parents, students, teachers and community leaders across all 50 states and are designed to raise awareness of the need to provide parents with access to better schools for their children.

The Most Challenging Issue

Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week, be-lieves that education reform is the single most important—and challeng-ing—issue facing our nation.

Said Campanella, “With one American child dropping out of school every 26 seconds, our country must do much more to provide every child with access to a challenging, motivating and effective school. National School Choice Week provides an opportunity for millions of people who want real education reform in our nation to have their voices heard.”

Campanella went on to say that student achievement can increase and graduation rates can rise if states and localities increase access to a vari-ety of different educational options for families, from traditional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning and home schooling.

“Schools are not ‘one-size-fits-all,’ because every child has unique interests and needs. Parents deserve the opportunity to select the right learning environment for their kids, regardless of where they live or how much money they earn,” added Campanella. “Time and again, research shows that when parents are empowered to make these choices, children benefit tremendously.”

The effort has drawn diverse support from celebrities—such as Bill Cosby—and elected officials from both political parties. But Campanella said that anyone who supports the concept of school choice can plan and organize an event. (NAPSI)

Three Career TrendsAs the economy improves, so do career prospects. Here are three

trends to watch.

Robust job growth in health care and IT: The health care industry employed one in five Americans in 2012 and could grow 29 percent by 2020. More than half of the 30 fastest-growing jobs over the next decade will be in health care, with nursing positions expected to increase by 26 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With technology driving nearly every industry in today’s economy, IT professionals will also continue to be in high demand. By decade’s end, 1.4 million positions should open in software engineering, network operations and related areas.

Detours lead to new career paths: Today’s workers are more likely to “zigzag” through jobs in diverse industries than follow a linear career track. Nearly 90 percent of women

professionals and executives will take time off or shift careers in midlife, according to the new book “Women Lead” by Apollo Research Institute. Recent research shows that more than 8 million baby boomers have entered “encore careers,” often in jobs that give back to the community.

Small business creates big opportunities: Small businesses have provided 55 percent of U.S. jobs since the 1970s and have added 8 million positions since 1990, during which time large firms shed 4 million jobs. A recent report noted that nearly 90 percent of businesses with under 99 employees plan to hire or maintain current staff in 2013 and more than half expect revenue to rise. (NAPSI)—

It may seem surprising to some, but real estate investors can not only do well for themselves, they can do good for the community, too.

Back when the housing market went bad, investors got a lot of the blame. They were accused of taking on more properties than they could afford, which resulted in increased foreclosures. Now, however, investors are finding valuable opportunities and earning a more respectable reputation.

In several areas that were hit hard by the housing and economic recessions, investors are playing a key role in the turnaround. Many of today’s investors are ordinary people, simply buying a second home in their own neighborhood and turning it into a rental prop-erty.

So why the surge in real estate investment? These investors see the “perfect storm” of opportuni-ty: historically low interest rates, attractive home prices and a great selection. The new breed of inves-tor also removes many damaged and vacant properties off the market and makes much-needed repairs to improve the value of their investment and the neighborhood.

Because rental demand is strong, today’s investor can realize a positive cash flow and hold the property for appreciation over the long term. Also, Fannie Mae now allows financing for up to 20 properties for individual in-vestors, in addition to financing that will cover both the property purchase and remodeling costs.

During any real estate downturn, all eyes fall on real estate investors. Their activity level often indicates how stable real estate markets are and

signals other buyers when it’s a good time to make a move—typically when investors sense prices have stopped declining.

Investors are sending a strong message about their confidence in the current market by making up over 20 percent of all residential real estate buyers.

“Real estate is and has always been a sound long-term investment,” said Margaret Kelly, CEO of the real estate franchise company RE/MAX, LLC. “More and more of the folks next door are taking steps to secure one or two rental properties or a vaca-tion home in their favorite locations in hopes of adding to their nest egg.”

Interested buyers don’t have to have a large sum of cash on hand to start investing. In fact, it’s even possible to use retirement funds, such as an IRA, to invest in real estate, using an ap-proved custodian to manage the in-vestment.

Many budding investors may not be aware of the stimulus they provide a

challenged industry and a struggling economy. Investors reduce the fore-closure inventory, make improvements and provide housing for families that can’t qualify for a mortgage. All this adds to the momentum of the current housing recovery.

Anyone thinking of investing in real estate, however, should seek out professional advice and assistance.

“Real estate agents know their communities and can identify the best opportunities. And many real estate agents have obtained specific training to help those looking for investment property,” Kelly added. (NAPSI)

River of Lights Brightened Holidays for Nearly 104,000

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--River of Lights was brighter than ever, and a mild December helped the ABQ BioPark welcome record-break-ing crowds last year. Almost 104,000 guests enjoyed the sparkle

of River of Lights (103,874 to be exact), far surpassing the light show’s previous attendance high of 90,037 in 2010.

Overall, the BioPark’s total attendance was up 2% on Dec. 31, halfway through the fiscal year, and revenue was up 11% compared to the halfway mark in FY2012. The BioPark continues to be the most visited destination in New Mexico with steady growth expected in coming months.

“It’s exciting to see people who return year after year to see the lights. Adults love it as much as the kids do, and you can hear them comment about the new sculptures and new arrangements,” said Maryann Torrez, BioPark Special Events Manager. “I had several people tell me they’ve been to light shows all over the country, and Albuquerque’s is the best by far, and for a great price, too. We are all proud to be part of what has become a great tradition for both citizens and tourists to New Mexico.”

As crews pack away the lights, the entire BioPark looks forward to 2013. We will open new macaw, alligator, and gorilla “bachelor pad” exhibits

at the Zoo and a Pacific Coral Reef and plastic awareness exhibit at the Aquarium. Construction begins on the next phase of the Botanic Garden’s Insectarium, which may be ready to open by year end. The event calendar gets off to a busy start in January: (itsatrip.org)

MANAGING YOUR MONEYOlder Americans should know that while fi nancial abuse is believed

to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help pre-vent it and protect yourself.

You, family, friends or your bank notice fi nancial activity you don’t recall, that is not consistent with your fi nancial history or that is beyond your means.

Your caregiver or benefi ciary refuses to use your funds for necessary care and treatment or is threatening to place you in a long-term care fa-cility unless you give him or her control of your fi nances.

It appears that food or medication has been manipulated or withheld so you become weak and compliant.

If you feel threatened and believe you are in immediate danger, contact law enforcement.

Talk with family members, friends and trusted professionals to plan your fi nancial future. If managing your daily fi nances is diffi cult, con-sider engaging a money manager.

Talk with a lawyer about creating a durable power of attorney for asset management, a revocable or living will, trust and health care advance directives.

Never send anyone personal information to collect a prize or reward.

Don’t be pressured or intimidated into quick decisions by a salesperson or contractor.

Don’t sign any documents you don’t completely understand without fi rst talking it over with an attorney or a family member you trust.

Never provide personal information (Social Security, credit card, ATM PIN number) over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking.

Tear up or shred credit card receipts, bank statements, solicitations and fi nancial records before disposing of them.

If you hire someone to help you in your home, be sure that person has been properly screened, with criminal background checks completed.

If you suspect you or someone you know is being exploited, call (800) 677-1116 to get connected with the state Adult Protective Services or other appropriate aging resource. (NAPSI)
