Switching To Safety

As you contemplate retirement-something that’s a good idea to do at any age—it may pay for you to adopt new financial

habits and invest in a high-yield savings account. It’s a smart way to diversify your portfolio and reduce your overall risk, which can be a big plus—especially in an uncertain financial climate.

What You Get Other important benefits include: • Peace of mind. One of the safest investment vehicles is a high-yield savings account. Your savings are fully insured by the FDIC up to at least $250,000--even if the bank that holds your account fails. In fact, since the formation of the FDIC in 1934, no insured depositor with an account within the FDIC insurance limit has ever lost money as the result of a bank failure. • Liquidity. High-yield savings accounts are one of the most liquid investment vehicles, providing you with easy access to your money. • No maintenance fees. An increasing number of savings vehicles, including high-yield savings accounts, don’t impose monthly service fees, provided you maintain a specified minimum balance in your accounts. Look for a savings account with no fees so all your money can keep working for you. • Earnings. Not all savings accounts are high-

yield savings accounts. As the term suggests, high-yield accounts offer higher interest rates than conventional savings accounts. That makes them an effective long-term investment vehicle as well as a means of establishing an emergency fund. For example, the CIT Bank Savings account offers competitive interest rates and, like most high-yield accounts, is available online.

What The Banker Says Explains Raymond Quinlan, executive vice president, banking, CIT Group Inc., the parent company of CIT Bank: “Since the launch of CIT Bank’s online bank, our mission has been

Tips To Help You Save Hundreds Of Dollars

According to the American Research Group, Americans spend an average of $646 on holiday gifts a year, and that’s not including what they spend on the rest of their holiday trimmings.

It can be challenging to have cash left in your pocket at the end of the holidays, but employing a variety of strategies can help your bank account stay in the black while you deck the halls with the red and green. Here are hints that can help: • Use coupons. In addition to the ones in the paper, a helpful place to find them can be CouponCabin.com, with its thousands of coupons for online and in-store use at everywhere from large retailers to small, independently owned businesses. The site’s wide variety of guaranteed-to-work coupons means you’ll be able to save money no matter what your plans are this holiday season. • Lower your smartphone plan: Almost everyone who has a smartphone loves it, which means they use it all the time. But what if you could give up some of your services for just a few months? Try going back to the basics and keeping phone use to a minimum to save nearly $50 over the several weeks. • Go cable free: Holidays are typically the busiest times of the year, leaving little time for TV watching. Get rid of the extra cost for cable and save as much as $100. • Switch up your workout routine: Consider swapping a pricey gym membership for outdoor exercise or mall walking in rough weather. Depending on your membership fees, you could save as much as $100 per month. • Raise your deductibles: Be extra careful this season and increase the deductibles on your car and home insurance policies. Going from a $250 to a $1,000 deductible could mean a savings of around $100. • Sell stuff: Before you fill your closets with even more stuff, take a quick inventory of items you already own and don’t use. Consider holding

While rewarding, helping out an aging loved one can be stressful and present feelings of frustra-

tion. Do you drive your mother to doc-tors’ appointments? Are you managing medicine for your grandfather? Have you had a parent move in with you? Whether your help is hands-on or offering support, assistance and guidance from a distance, you aren’t alone. You’re far from it. It’s estimated that there are 42.1 million fam-ily caregivers in America facing similar challenges. Connecting with other caregivers who know what it’s like to care for a loved one and joining communities of those with similar experiences can offer great sup-port in a difficult time. AARP’s new Care-giving Resource Center is a great starting point to join an online community of caregivers and connect with information, resources and advice. Whether you’re car-ing for your mother who lives 20 minutes away or for your in-laws living across the country, the Caregiving Resource Center offers tips for caring for your loved ones, both near and far: Balancing Work and Caregiving at Home • Learn your company policies—Talk to your Human Resources Department or manager to learn about your company’s policies regarding caregiving. Some companies offer programs to help find

services, support groups or flexible work arrangements. • Know your rights—Learn about the Family and Medical Leave Act, which entitles eligible workers to unpaid leave-up to 12 weeks a year-for family caregiv-ing without losing job security or health benefits. • Talk to your manager—Let your man-ager know about your role as a caregiver and what it requires of you.

Caring From Afar • Create a contact list—Put together a list for yourself and your loved one of ad-dresses and phone numbers of those who can be reached in an emergency: friends, neighbors, doctors or other family mem-bers who have regular contact with your loved one. • Organize information—No one wants to think about emergencies, but it’s always better to be prepared. Collect and keep handy important information before a crisis. You might even consider an electronic health record-such as the AARP Health Record—to manage critical information. Keep handy medical records, medications, doctor names and numbers, insurance information, names of utility companies, financial information and important docu-ments including birth certificates, Social Security cards and home deeds. • Make visits productive—Time with

a garage sale or auctioning or selling your items online to easily put $50 or more in your pocket. • Haggle away: A recent study from Consumer Reports found that those who asked for a discount got one nearly 80 percent of the time. Put your negotiating skills to the test and you could save an extra $50 or more for

your loved one should be enjoyable but it’s also a great opportunity to assess possibly chang-ing needs. Make a list of things to take care of before you arrive, including scheduling appoint-ments in advance or making shopping lists. When you’re there, note anything out of the ordinary and look around the house for safety hazards. • Community services—Look into community services that may provide support and assis-tance.
