CIPI Newsletter – November 7th, 2014

Continued from NAAW November 16 - 22, 2014...

The week aims to raise awareness about issues related to

substance abuse and problem gambling, and to highlight

how individuals can take steps to ensure an addiction-

free lifestyle for themselves and their families.

Another goal of the week is to celebrate the ability of

individuals and communities which work together to

support addiction awareness and addiction-free

lifestyles. Addiction is a bit of an "elephant in the room,"

a topic no one brings up or talks about. National

Addictions Awareness Week aims to get people talking

about addiction to help boost understanding about this

disease.

Addiction is a hard habit to break and can often take

control of a person's life. The habit can involve a myriad

of things ranging from drugs, alcohol, gambling or

tobacco. Risk factors for developing an addiction

include.

Family members with an addiction; Poverty; Stress;

Discrimination or oppression; Abuse; Friends who use

drugs or alcohol or participate in the same activity, such

as gambling.

Some factors that help protect adults and youth from

addiction include: Having a positive role model; Being

involved in meaningful activities like sports, music, or

school/community activities; Having a strong

connection to family, friends and community; Having

someone to talk to.

Talking to youth about the risks of drug and alcohol use

and listening and being supportive of their efforts to

resist drinking or using drugs is another good way to

prevent your child from using drugs. This can also help

strengthen the parent/child bond and reduce their chance

of using drugs.

Also, be a good role model. Don't drink excessively or

use drugs. Children of parents who use drugs, drink

alcohol or gamble have a greater risk of addiction.

Santa Anonymous Submitted by Phyllis Frazer

I would like to take this time to give a big THANK

YOU to all that donated in this year’s efforts of

fundraising for SANTA ANOYMOUS. I carried

over 1945.00 dollars from last year and with ticket

sales throughout this year we have a total of

$3000.00 dollars to date. I have looked after this

program for 2 years and had extreme fun knowing

the children would benefit, however I am stepping

aside due to lack of time on my part. With that said

I am totally blown away at how giving the

community of BEAUVAL is; you are an awesome

community to do fundraising in.

To all that donated this year for ticket sales a BIG,

BIG thank you: Debbie Laliberte, Clem & Julia

Lariviere, Sylvia Laliberte, Sandra Alcrow, Cecile

Fiedler, Ann Lafleur, Alvina Aubichon, Vitaline

Read, Nancy Roy, Mary Bottrell, Jean Roy, Edna

Laliberte, Kim Laliberte, Janet Geddes, Mathilda

Frazer, Tony and Mackenzie Frazer.

So to the community of Beauval you are doing

awesome, keep it up! Ticket sales are ongoing and

there will be a TV auction on November 26 at

5:00PM.

ANNUAL EYE EXAMS FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS NOW COVERED BY THE PROVINCE

People living with diabetes in Saskatchewan will

benefit from improved access to vision care. The

province now provides coverage for annual eye

examinations for diabetic patients, effective October

1, 2014.

“Maintaining good eye health is an important aspect

of diabetes management,” Health Minister Dustin

Duncan said. “This new service will remove

financial barriers and ensure timely access to vision

care for people living with diabetes in our province.”

Clinical practice guidelines for the management of

residents with diabetes recommend annual eye exams

to ensure optimal monitoring and care. The newly

introduced coverage will reduce out-of-pocket costs,

improve access to an eye examination, and facilitate

early treatment of eye issues related to diabetes.

The eye exam coverage for diabetics is part of a new

agreement between the Ministry of Health and the

Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists.

“As our population ages, we can expect an increase

in the incidence of diabetic eye disease; therefore, the

demand for optometric services will significantly

increase,” Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists

President Dr. Kevin Woodard said. “We applaud the

Minister of Health and the Saskatchewan government

for their foresight in managing the future needs of the

people of Saskatchewan. Doctors of Optometry will

continue to collaborate and communicate with

ophthalmologists, family physicians and other health

care providers to ensure the best possible patient

outcomes for the eye health of our patients.”

“We are pleased to see the Government of

Saskatchewan’s decision to help preserve and

prevent vision loss - a possible secondary

complication for those living with diabetes,”

Canadian Diabetes Association Regional Director

for Saskatchewan Warren Wagner said. “Receiving

comprehensive annual eye examinations is essential

to catch retinal changes as early as possible and

ultimately help preserve vision for the more than

90,000 people living with diabetes in the province.”

Annual eye examinations are currently covered by

the province for all children under the age of 18.

“Expanding the coverage to include adults with

diabetes is part of our commitment to provide better

access to primary health services and patient-

centered health care for our residents,” Duncan said.

Saskatchewan has also proclaimed October as

Children’s Vision Month. Children’s Vision Month

is marked across Canada, and is dedicated to raising

awareness of the impact undiagnosed vision

problems can have on children’s learning and

development.
