Executive Summary
Last year’s Executive Summary asked program directors to not only provide information on
activities and accomplishments but to make recommendations (including suggestions for
Critical Success factors) for the coming year. This year’s focus, not only highlights the year’s
endeavors, but tasks directors to tie budget implications to student learning outcomes
and/or program accreditation. Proposals for potential Critical Success Factors has moved
and now has a separate page after the Use of Student Learning Outcomes Summary.
1. What improvements did you make in your department?
In AY 2009-2010 faculty from the healthcare business programs were shifted and moved
between departments. Jennifer Hurley was moved to a part time FTE and was split .25
CRNA and .25 Business. Jerry Brown was also shifted between two departments; 0.4 GenEd
and 0.4 Business.
New affiliate faculty were brought on to reduce the amount of overload as well as to fill open
courses.
A thorough gap analysis was performed of the curriculum and curriculum changes were
proposed for academic year 2011-2012.
2. What areas do you feel you did especially well in your department? Which areas in your
department need more attention?
Areas the department did well:
Record enrollment in MHA and HIMB programs and increased enrollment in HCBM
program.
Our department continues to have bi-monthly department meetings to increase
communication and awareness among the department.
Faculty were very interested in improving their courses and becoming better
instructors, and therefore attending many of the CTE workshops as well as two
faculty attending CTE101.
Increased awareness of Clarkson College in the community. Faculty gave many
presentations and webinars, promoting Clarkson College.
Also continuing the Benson High School courses increases awareness of Clarkson
College in that particular high school.
Areas the department may need more attention:
Although our department has increased enrollment into the programs, we would still
like to see enrollments increase in the following AYs. Increasing marketing efforts for
the business programs will be crucial.

The department is completing continuing education modules. Completion of the
modules is crucial for the implementation of ICD-10.
3. What budget implications do you see for your department next year (include the student
learning outcome associated with this expense)?
ICD-10 Marketing and Training. All coding courses must be transitioned to ICD-10. Also the
creation of the ICD-10 modules will increase workload for faculty and possible affiliates.
Marketing funds will need to be designated for the ICD-10 training modules in order to
ensure that the community knows of availability of the modules.
Clinical Contract CSF will need to be on-going as there is extensive work to be completed
from this CSF. The CSF is recommending that a new FTE be in charge of all clinical contracts.
4. What, if any specific needs or assistance do you require for on-going Critical Success
Factor or Program Accreditation for now and in the future?
Any CSF dealing with alumni should also be kept ongoing. Increasing Alumni participation in
events and activities is crucial for Clarkson College. Gaining more membership into the
Alumni membership is also an important aspect of Clarkson College.
Clinical Contract CSF will need to be on-going as there is extensive work to be completed
from this CSF. The CSF is recommending that a new FTE be in charge of all clinical contracts.
5. How did you use the Noel-Levitz Student Services Inventory or other assessment (i.e.
student evaluations, graduate luncheon survey, etc) information?
Noel-Levitz – The business programs did not use the data programmatically.
Student Evaluations – These evaluations are used to improve classes within the
specific programs as well as help instructors to improve their teaching styles.
Graduate Luncheon Survey – The graduate luncheon survey is not well utilized by the
business department. Students are strongly encouraged to attend, but with majority
of the students working full-time or not living in NE, it is hard to get participation. The
results that are shared to the college from the other various programs are great to
see and do give some thoughts for improvement in the business department.
Graduate/Employer Survey – The graduate and employer surveys are required by
both specialty accrediting body (IACBE and CAHIIM). These results are reported each
year to the accrediting body to show employment statistics, salary statistics, and
overall satisfaction of the program. Adjustments to curriculum have been made as a
result of these surveys.
OSATs – The OSAT evaluations have aided the instructors in improving their online
classes. It has become a competition among the faculty who can get the best scores.
This has helped to boost student learning by having a better functioning online
classroom.
6. Year’s Outstanding Achievement Information (Individual Awards, Publications, etc.).

College Mission Connection to Program
Mission
Preparing students to professionally provide high quality, ethical, and
compassionate health care services.
Department Mission Statement (please note any changes from last year)
For Academic Year 2009-2010, there were no changes to the department mission. The
Mission Statement is as follows:
The mission of the Health Care Business programs is to prepare students for leadership
roles in health care delivery systems through high quality, ethical and compassionate health
business education.
How are the two missions related and connected together?
All business programs, both undergraduate and graduate provide educational knowledge
and experiences that can be brought to a variety of healthcare and business settings. In
addition to knowledge and experience, the students learn soft skills, such critical thinking,
use of technology, communication skills, cultural awareness, and use of professional
behaviors, which will lead students to high quality of work, as well as ethical and
compassionate service to others. All the business programs mirror the mission statement in
their class work and practical experiences.

Demonstrate the ability to respectfully interact within a diverse society.
Demonstrate professional behaviors.
The following questions will demonstrate your department’s efforts to
contribute to these skills:

1. Communication
A.) How did your department impact and measure the student outcome for:
Demonstrate effective communication:
Communication is still a struggle for our students. Encouragement for using the Writing Lab
is being thread throughout the curriculum, as well as standardized programmatic rubrics for
writing.
See attached Outcomes Assessment Grids for MHA, HCBM, HIMB, and HIM.
2. Critical Thinking
A.) How did your department impact and measure the student outcome for:
Demonstrate critical thinking to make educated decisions.
Critical thinking is getting better. More advanced activities have been added to the
curriculum to address these issues. Accounting and Finance seem to still be where students
struggle the most.
See attached Outcomes Assessment Grids for MHA, HCBM, HIMB, and HIM.

3. Technology
A.) How did your department impact and measure the student outcome for:
Demonstrate proficient use of technologies.
Technology activities are being thread throughout the curriculum. Simulations are being
investigated to incorporate more technology as well as a curriculum change to increase the
level of Microsoft applications for our students. Also, in the HIM programs, the Virtual Lab
has been purchased in order to have our students gain knowledge of specific HIM software
applications in the field.
See attached Outcomes Assessment Grids for MHA, HCBM, HIMB, and HIM.
4. Diversity
A.) How did your department impact and measure the student outcome for:
Demonstrate the ability to respectfully interact within a diverse society.
The Business programs struggle with adding diversity projects into the curriculum. The MHA
program has done a great job of adding in a cultural competency assessment in the MB810
HR and Org Behavior course. For the undergraduate programs, we are still investigating the
best way to incorporate diversity topics into the business curriculum. The students are
mainly exposed to diversity topics in the Core courses.

5. Professional Behaviors
A.) How did your department impact and measure the student outcome for:
Demonstrate professional behaviors.
Professional behaviors is something that the business department has really tried to
incorporate into the curriculum. A student handbook is being created and will be ready for
academic year 2001-2012. In the handbook, an entire section will be dedicated to
professional behaviors.
See attached Outcomes Assessment Grids for MHA, HCBM, HIMB, and HIM.

o Correct program coding into the system (ex. BUS and MGMT are
the same thing but students are randomly coded to each program
code)
