    MOMS MAGIC

Your Mothers Day Special (Health & Nutrition, May 2015) featuring leading ladies like Sonali Bendre, Priya Dutt, Raveena Tandon and others made super reading. It is commendable that despite being public figures and having demanding careers, they are hands-on moms. Their fitness mantras were equally interesting to read.

    SUMMER WISE

In summer, we often opt for aerated colas, golas and sugar-laden sharbats which are not at all healthy and safe. Summer Sips (Health & Nutrition, May 2015) featuring easy-to-make, sugar-free drinks was interesting. I tried out all the four recipes and found the drinks refreshing, energetic and soothing.

    ROLE MODEL

The article Deconstructing Angelinas Decision (Health & Nutrition, May 2015) was highly informative. Oophorectomy, which only a few people know about, was explained in detail. And hats off to Angelina Jolie for taking such a brave decision of having her ovaries removed, and creating awareness about the surgery.

  • We often write in these pages about the benefits of brisk walking. It reduces blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, and also improves bone health.

And now scientists say that brisk walking may improve the symptoms of Parkinsons disease. A study published in Neurology found that people with mild to moderate Parkinsons who walk regularly may improve their motor function, mood, energy level, fitness and some aspects of thinking abilities. The results may offer hope to people with Parkinsons who do not have dementia and are able to walk independently without a cane or walker. However, since people with Parkinsons often have balance and gait challenges, its important to get a doctors okay before starting a walking programme.

    reduces the risk of stroke

A large study of female health

professionals in the journal Stroke found that those who walked two or more hours a week or who usually

walked at a brisk pace (three miles per hour or faster) were at least one-third less likely to have a stroke over

a 12-year period than those who did not

    walk regularly.

If you have hot flashes and night sweats related to menopause, see if cutting down on or eliminating caffeine helps. In a recent study from the Mayo Clinic that included 2,500 women who reported menopausal concerns, those who consumed caffeinated beverages were more likely to have hot flashes and related problems than those who did not.

For people aged 60 and older, who do not have dementia, light alcohol consumption may improve their episodic memory the ability to recall memories of events according to research in the American Journal of Alzheimers Disease and Other Dementias. Light consumption was defined as one to six drinks per week.

Light alcohol consumption associated with better memory

    True or false

Any type of alcohol, not just red wine, can reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke.True. Most experts agree that wine, beer and spirits, all have the same effect on heart health. Most feel that part of the benefit comes from alcohols ability to increase HDL cholesterol levels (the good cholesterol) and prevent blood clots in arteries.

However, alcohol should be consumed in moderation not more than two drinks per day for men, and one drink per day for women. People over 65 should drink even less, and those with conditions such as high triglycerides, high blood pressure or liver disease should avoid it altogether.

The study used data from more than 660 patients in the Framingham Heart Study

Offspring Cohort. Researchers found that light alcohol intake is linked to a larger hippocampal brain volume and can increase the release of brain chemicals involved with information processing. The

hippocampus converts short-term memories into long-term ones and helps memory recall. Alcohol is also believed to trigger the release of specific proteins that are beneficial to the brain, says researcher Dr Brain Downer, PhD, from the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Also, many alcoholic beverages, like red wine, contain chemicals that function as antioxidants to protect brain cells from harmful free radicals, says Dr Downer. Of course, balance and moderation are paramount when it comes to alcoholic intake. And adults with specific medical conditions or who take certain medications should not drink alcohol (make sure to check with your doctor.)

After three months of training, people who learned to self-manage stress suffered 60% less heartburn than those who camped out on the couch. Teaching patients to reduce stress also reduces a physical manifestation of that stress heartburn, says lead author Jane Hutton, MD, adding that distraction is especially effective, because it diverts the attention from your discomfort.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when a build-up of plaque in the arteries of the legs reduces blood flow from the heart to the lower limbs. The most common symptom is claudication, which is a cramping pain in the calf muscles when walking. The poor circulation that occurs with PAD can also result in ulcers and wounds that wont heal.

In the case of severe blockages, a condition called Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) also known as a leg attack can develop. In CLI, blood flow in the legs is reduced to the extent that it causes ischemic rest pain severe pain in the legs or feet that can get worse when youre lying down, and can continue for several hours at a time. So if you experience any symptoms suggestive of PAD, let your doctor know, as immediate treatment is essential to re-establish blood flow to the affected area. This may involve surgical treatment too.

  • SLEEP WELLActor Sonu Sood reveals his sleep secrets.I am a morning person. Even if I sleep late (although its not very often), I tend to wake up early, by 6 or 7 a.m. I wish I could sleep more, because I know a good nights sleep is very important to maintain optimum health. But I guess my body clock has been set in such a way that I can get through the day with five-six hours of sleep.

Back in Punjab, my mom used to give me a large glass of milk before I hit the sack. But in Mumbai, I havent been able to keep up the practice.

I prefer a firm, hard mattress because it helps keep my back in good shape. I like light shades in my bedroom and make sure it is devoid of clutter as it facilitates peaceful sleep.

  • QFact File

Hip, Skip & Jump... your way to good health! Heres how you can keep your hips strong and healthy.

  • We live in a world of contradictions. Our lifestyle is fast-paced, with barely enough time to do all we need to do. On the other hand, we have grown extremely sedentary.

We have developed cures and treatments for a dozen previously untreatable illnesses, but find ourselves besieged by more health-related ailments than ever before.

To top it all, when we find ourselves suffering from hip pain despite being seemingly healthy individuals, it might appear that we are at the butt-end of a joke. But hip pain is no laughing matter...

CAUSES OF HIP PAINPain is an indicator of the bodys functional ability, and generally occurs when there is some medical ailment affecting the body. Hip pain is a common problem generally occurring around the outside of the hip, hip joint, groin, outer buttock and upper thigh. It could be due to injuries, musculoskeletal disorders or other medical ailments. Some of the most common causes of hip pain are:

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis is a musculoskeletal disorder caused due to swelling or inflammation of the joints. Arthritis in the hip joint

While hip pain can often be caused by overworked gluteal muscles or a minor injury, symptoms should

    be carefully monitored in order

    to detect major concerns.

causes difficulty in movement and postural imbalances. It also gives rise to shooting pain down the leg on movement. Some of the common types of arthritis affecting the hip are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

INJURIES: Injuries to the hip may cause swelling and ache. Minor injuries subside and heal automatically. But major injuries lead to hip dislocation, bursitis, hip fracture, tendinitis, hip labral tear (when the labrum, a band of cartilage surrounding the hip joint, is injured), sprains and inguinal/ femoral hernia (which may cause chronic, intense pain).

NERVE BLOCKAGE: Pinched or blocked nerve clusters, which cause shooting pain during movement or application of pressure to the hip (such as lying down or sitting), may be the result of medical conditions such as sciatica, meralgia paresthetica, spinal stenosis, herniated disc and sacrolitis.

CANCER: Bone cancer can often cause intense pain in the hips, and so can leukaemia and metastatic cancers which have spread to the bone, as the growth of carcinogens in the bone structure causes inflammation and pain.

  • OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Several musculoskeletal disorders such as avascular necrosis, synovitis, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis and rickets affect the bone structure, reducing bone strength and causing additional stress on the hip and resulting in pain.

TIMELY DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENTWhile hip pain can often be caused by overworked gluteal muscles or a minor injury, symptoms should be carefully monitored in order to detect major concerns. A comprehensive medical treatment must be sought if the pain is chronic, dull and achy, and also for sudden and intense pain. Stiffness and swelling must be checked for, as should locking, catching and decreased range of motion. Moreover, if it is found that the symptoms are triggered or worsened by activity or overuse, long periods of rest, application of pressure or weight on the hip, or injury, it is usually indicative of a serious medical concern.

Expert medical opinion must be sought without delay if an individuals hip is unable to bear weight, or if the hip makes a popping sound during movement. Any visible deformation in

QUADRUPED HIP EXTENSIONGo down on all fours, tighten your abdominals, squeeze your buttocks and try to lift your right

NOTE: Usually, 10-12 repetitions of each exercise is advisable. Medical supervision of an orthopedist or a physiotherapist is advisable.

are very good sources of calcium, which strengthen

    the bones.

  • the hip, especially after a fall or injury, warrants diagnosis of the problem, as does extreme pain after the injury or fall. Intense pain and sudden swelling or inflammation of the hip is also indicative of a medical concern. Individuals with prior history of musculoskeletal problems such as osteoporosis must be doubly careful in case they have injured their hip and have persisting pain.

MANAGING HIP PAINHowever, contrary to popular belief, managing hip pain is extremely easy. Maintaining the body mass

index (BMI) and weight is extremely important as it decreases the stress or pressure on the hip.

Diet also plays a vital role in managing hip pain. A good diet not only helps in decreasing weight and

controlling obesity, but also significantly boosts metabolism and increases the nutrient absorption for strengthening the hip and pelvic bones. Foods rich in nutrients such as

vitamin D and calcium must be included in the diet. Dairy products, fish, green leafy vegetables etc are very good sources of calcium, which strengthen the bones.

Posture correction is important, as incorrect posture can cause hip pain due to unevenly distributed load and may even lead to hip dysplasia.

Wearing good, comfortable shoes and managing the ergonomic situation at home and the workplace can significantly reduce the incidence of hip pain.

Balance and proprioception should be improved especially

amongst older people. Reduced risk of falls and injuries leads to a lower chance of development of pain.

Strength and resistance exercises such as basic stretches for gluteal muscles, mobility exercises, clam-shell exercises and reverse clam-shell exercises can be done to strengthen the hip/ pelvic musculature, thus providing adequate support and balance to the hip.

Taking proper care of your hip will not only lead to a healthier overall body structure, but will also make you capable of taking on any and all challenges life would throw at you.

  • Q Healthy Mind

Suppressing anger can affect your mental and physical well-being. But intense anger is unhealthy.

Heres how to get a grip.

    MAD!GET

  • To prevent yourself from having a knee-jerk outburst,

say, I would like to talk about something, but Im

too upset right now. Then, set a time to meet.

Janice confessed that she was upset with her husband, who travelled frequently for business but decided to go trekking alone on one of his rare free weekends.

I gave him the silent treatment, then blew up and called him a selfish jerk. Her outburst sparked an enormous argument that made her feel guilty, frustrated and, ironically, angry at herself. I probably made too big a deal of it, she said. Although Janice could have handled the situation with more finesse, her anger seemed entirely justified.

Why do women who are so adept at dealing with most emotions deny themselves the right to feel furious? Our culture may be to blame. Women are often afraid of their anger, because it feels dangerously close to losing control something theyve been taught not to do, says Karin Bruckner, a psychotherapist and womens-anger specialist based in the San Francisco Bay area. Research shows that as early as fourth grade, girls start believing that anger makes them unattractive. It can be difficult even as an adult to express anger constructively, whether were mildly irritated about poor service, annoyed with a co-worker or seething at our mother over some deep-seated issue.

But suppressing feelings, the most common way women cope, is unproductive. Not only does it leave the issue unresolved, but studies indicate that women who hold in anger are prone to headaches, stomach problems and sexual dysfunction, including pain during intercourse. When emotions simmer for months or even years, they can also cause depression and eating disorders.

Fortunately, experts say there is a better way to deal with hostility. When expressed in a well-thought-out manner, anger can help you take control of maddening situations, assert your needs in a positive way and bring you closer to others, says Bruckner. Youll feel happier, create healthier boundaries and become more confident. These strategies will show you how to let off steam without losing control, ruining relationships or compromising your convictions.

EXAMINE THE SITUATION Ask yourself: Is this worth being angry about? Its important to make the distinction between minor aggravations that arent worth a fight a slow driver or a rude sales clerk and circumstances in which your rights, beliefs or values are being violated.

  • Consider whether theres been a misunderstanding you thought that your friend betrayed your confidence when in fact someone else spilled the beans. If she did break your trust, think about whether this is an unusual event. Sometimes you need to give someone a break if she behaves totally out of character.

TAKE TIME TO COOL OFF Rage causes an adrenaline surge that can take 20-30 minutes to dissipate. During that time, your thinking may be muddled. Rein in your urge to have it out until youve calmed down. To prevent yourself from having a knee-jerk outburst, say, I would like to talk about something, but Im too upset right now. Then, set a time to meet. If you cant remove yourself from the situation, look away and take a few deep breaths. If you can leave the site, use the excess adrenaline by going for a run, or walking around the block.

GET AT THE CORE ISSUE Once youre calm, think about why the situation bothers you so much. Maybe you feel youve been insulted,

taken advantage of or neglected. Anger often brings up deeply rooted issues, so taking time to connect the dots may help you recognize your hot buttons. You have to know what youre really mad about before you can address it. To get to the root of your anger, ask yourself: What is being threatened? Your right to do or say something that you believe in? The stability of your relationship? Your reputation?

CHOOSE COMMUNICATION THAT SUITS THE SITUATIONIf you feel a confrontation is warranted, construct your message carefully. Dont soft-pedal your approach by saying, I probably shouldnt be mad about this It makes you sound as though youre not convinced about your position, which undermines your message. Your goal is to share your feelings rather than hurl accusations. Come up with concrete details about what upset you: I saw you talking to your old girlfriend at the party, and it made me think you wanted to get back together with her. Consider making specific suggestions: Id feel more confident if you would introduce me to her.

BE AWARE OF PRESENTATION Because your manner is more important than what you say, when its time to talk, remain calm. Communication is largely non-verbal. About 30% is conveyed by tone of voice and 60% by body language. Speak softly and slowly, especially if the other person is agitated; shes likely to mimic your demeanor. Adopt an open posture dont cross your arms or legs or sit behind a desk. Listen attentively and nod to indicate that you hear what shes saying. Dont interrupt it increases tension. Ask her questions or seek clarification if you dont understand her perspective.

    and 60% by body language.

    Speak softly and slowly,

especially if the other person is

    agitated.

  • ANTICIPATE RESISTANCE Its not easy to hear that someone is angry at you, so dont be surprised if your initial statement isnt met with an immediate apology. Repeat your message if your friend or co-worker doesnt grasp why youre upset. Avoid playing the role of an amateur psychologist. One of the biggest mistakes people make is hypothesizing about the other persons motives. Saying things like, I think you were rude to me because you were jealous when I hugged Matthew, often makes other people feel defensive. Keep the focus on yourself and what youre feeling. If the person still doesnt get it, end the discussion and agree to revisit it when youre both calm. It can take several conversations before you make any progress in resolving the issue. Stick to your guns if the relationship is valuable to you.

KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY If your honest attempts to have a dialogue end in a standoff, consider how much emotional energy youre willing to invest. If youre confident that you can patch things up, further discussion may be

If the other person meets your suggestion with averted eyes and stony silence, give the subject a rest. Suggest that you brainstorm solutions and talk later. Wait a few days before bringing the issue up again. Then think about how to protect yourself from similar situations in the future. In certain cases, you may need to put some distance in the relationship or even leave it behind.

END ON A POSITIVE NOTE If you feel that your concerns have been heard, let your friend know how much you appreciate her listening. Give her a hug and plan something fun together. Then enjoy the satisfaction of having let off some steam. Poor posture can make you achy. Here are the ve xes you need.Back Pain

  • Are you sitting up straight? Super because if you slump, slouch or hunch through the day, you may join the 80% of Americans who will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Recent research confirms that what you do every day can trigger soreness or spasms. So whether youre at home Googling for a great deal on Jimmy Choos or sashaying down the street in those heels, you can save yourself some discomfort by babying your back. Heres how...

FORGET THE SALUTEGood posture is not standing like a soldier at attention, says Arthur White, author of The Posture Prescription. That General Patton stance puts pressure on the spine. Instead, White recommends standing in a relaxed, balanced manner. And you should check your stance throughout the day when youre waiting for a latt, or an elevator and adjust as needed.

PUT YOUR FEET FIRSTHigh arches, flat feet: These foot problems, among others, can sabotage your posture and lead to an aching back. Women are particularly vulnerable; they suffer from four times as many foot ailments as men. And narrow, ill-fitting high heels are enemy number one. But doctors agree that custom-made corrective shoe inserts (orthotics) can improve most of these troubles.

Wear those Choos for meetings and parties, but for extensive walking, slip on comfortable shoes (heels no higher than 1 inches, or 2 inches for wedges).

WALK THIS WAYStudies show that walking relieves back pain. But if

your posture is poor, you may be taking a step backward instead. Bearing weight on one side or hunching as you walk may cause you pain over time. Unlock your knees and concentrate on keeping both your ribs and your pelvis straight. Relax your buttocks and pull your stomach muscles into a soft hold (no clenching). Your feet should

    backward instead.

  • Try resting your bag on your left shoulder on the way to work, then shifting it to your right shoulder on the way home.

roll from heel to ball. Think balanced, not rigid, and dont put too much pressure on

your heels. Practice four times a day for five minutes until the

    stance feels natural.

LIGHTEN YOUR LOADChances are one side of your body does double duty, from carrying

a toddler around to schlepping your laptop

home. And playing favourites throws off your posture, which can

really strain your muscles. The best solution: Switch

shoulders or hips periodically. Duh, right? But breaking this habit is not always that easy. Try resting your bag on your left shoulder on the way to work, then shifting it to your right shoulder on the way home. Also, whatever youre carrying, be sure that you keep it as close to your body as possible.

SLUMP LESS, BREAK MOREBetween work, Web surfing and TV watching, you probably spend most of your day sitting, which is murder on your back. A landmark Swedish study shows that sitting upright increases the force on the spine by 140%, compared with standing; slump, and that number rises to 185%.

Rules to sit by: Line up head over shoulders and shoulders over hips, rest on your sitz bones (the two bones in your rear end), and place feet flat on the floor with legs at a 90-degree angle. And dont just sit there; take breaks every 45 to 60 minutes to prevent strain. Get up and stretch. Neck rolls, chin tucks, and bending back with your hands on your hips can unkink muscles.

  • QDiet Wise

Weeks To Weight Loss!6Thats how long you need to master the skills to diet successfully.

  • Week 2

Most of us think its enough to simply choose a diet plan and start following it. But its not. You have to learn how to short-circuit those sabotaging thoughts that encourage you to go off your diet, that litany of justifications that stands between you and success. Things like, Its okay to eat this because Im stressed or Im celebrating or Its just a little piece or Ive already blown my diet today anyway. This six-week plan doesnt tell you what to eat. You can choose any healthy, nutritious diet plan you want

(just make sure it gives you at least 1,200 to 1,600 calories a day). What it does teach you is how to handle the voices in your head that threaten to undermine you as you work towards your goal, and how to stick to your

    plan, every single day.

GET YOUR HEAD INTO ITSET A GOAL TO LOSE FIVE POUNDS (OR APPROX 2 KGS). Even if you really want to lose more, focus on losing only five pounds at a time so you dont get overwhelmed.

MAKE AN EXERCISE APPOINTMENT. Treat your workout time like you would any other appointment, jotting it down on your calendar each day (or build up to a daily workout gradually, if you need to). Tell yourself, If I want to lose weight, exercise is not optional. Do as much spontaneous exercise as you can every day. For instance, if youre out shopping, walk a circuit around the mall before you hit the stores.

ADOPT AN ANTI-CRAVINGS MANTRA. The emotionally painful part about a craving is the struggle you feel. If you tell yourself, No choice, and find some way to distract yourself, youll conquer it.

DONT DIET YETMAKE A WHY I WANT TO DO THIS LIST. Write down every reason you have for losing weight, and stash copies in strategic places (like the kitchen!) so you can read them once a day and during moments of temptation.

GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT. Even though you havent officially started a diet yet, tell yourself, Good! or Way to go! every time you read your list. It is a key to staying motivated.

ENLIST A DIET COACH. Share your goals with a friend, family member or an online buddy.

    Week 1

    Motivate yourself

    Work out every day

  • START YOUR DIETPLAN WHAT YOURE GOING TO EAT. Each night, write down precisely what youre going to eat the following day. This advice may sound familiar but its important. Planning ahead enables you to make decisions about what youre going to eat before you encounter triggers, and it helps keep you in control when youre tempted.

WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU EAT. Include foods that you didnt plan to eat, and be precise about the amounts. This forces you to be aware of what youre eating.

DONT FOOL YOURSELF. Its not okay to eat something you didnt plan. Dont rely on making up for it later. If you want to lose weight permanently, you have to learn to stick to your plan.

    Week 3

CONQUER NEGATIVE THINKINGWRITE DOWN ALL YOUR SABOTAGING THOUGHTS. When you are tempted to stray from your diet, ask yourself, What was just going through my mind? Then record those musings on the spot on a piece of paper or on your phone. Theyre important for the next step.

COME UP WITH RESPONSES THATLL KEEP YOU STRONG. Put them on 3 x 5 cards so you can carry them around with you.

CONQUER THE FEELING THAT ITS ALL UNFAIR. When you cant eat something you want, accept the fact that limiting portion sizes of what you eat and exercising is the only way youre going to reach your goal. Then, 1) remind yourself why youre dieting in the first place; 2) give yourself credit for the weight youve already lost; and 3) list the positive things in your life.

    Week 4

    Write out your diet plan

    Moderation is the key

DONT LET A MINOR SLIP TURN INTO A MAJOR SETBACK. If you think, Ive already cheated, so I may as well eat whatever I want for the rest of the day and start again tomorrow, tell yourself, It makes no sense to keep loading up on more calories. If I stop now, it probably wont show up on the scale at all. If I keep eating, Ill gain weight.

  • Week 6FINE-TUNE YOUR NEW SKILLSDEAL WITH PLATEAUS. Some plateaus last just a few weeks. If yours drags on longer despite faithfully following your diet and exercise plans, try cutting your daily calories by 200 or exercising 15 minutes more a day (check with your doctor first). That should help you lose about a half-pound per week.

SET NEW GOALS. Dont put off pursuing new interests, goals or dreams while waiting to lose weight. Meet new people, travel, take up a hobby, or change your job to boost your self-esteem. Keep a list of things youve always wanted to do, and schedule time to do them.

KEEP IT GOING. Hold on to all the habits youve established: Reading cards with responses to sabotaging thoughts, keeping food charts, talking to your diet coach, following your exercise plans, and using your strategies to deal with hunger and cravings. Theyre your secret weapons for staying on track for the long-term.

OVERCOME CHALLENGESDEVISE AN EATING-OUT STRATEGY. Plan in advance what and how much youre going to eat, and anticipate the thoughts that might sabotage you.

STOP EATING TO PLEASE OTHERS. Ever feel pressured to eat something youd rather not in order to avoid disappointing someone? Take back your right to say no. Ask yourself, Is it reasonable for her to have such a strong reaction if I dont eat? Isnt my goal of losing weight legitimate?

SOOTHE YOURSELF WITHOUT FOOD. Remind yourself that if you eat because youre depressed, stressed or lonely, it wont solve the original problem and youll end up feeling worse because you strayed from your diet. Try a new strategy: Brainstorm how to solve your real problem.

    Week 5

    Plan your dinner out well

    Meet the new you!

Plum PropositionDried plums a.k.a. prunes are good for promoting digestion. But they also enhance bone health in post-menopausal women, according to a study in the British Journal of Nutrition. The study found that consuming 100 gms of prunes a day for one year significantly increased bone density in the spine and forearm. Thats about 10 prunes a day, admittedly a lot, with about 20 calories each prune.

According to the researchers, prunes may help suppress bone breakdown. They are especially rich in vitamin K (an important bone nutrient), antioxidants (which help shield bones from oxidative damage) and boron (which also plays a key role in bone health). If youre not used to eating prunes, add them gradually to your diet.

Seasoning your food with lots of onion and garlic might reduce your risk of colon, ovarian, kidney and throat cancers. Italian researchers found that older adults with the highest intake of onion and garlic had the lowest risk of cancer.

The biggest reduction in risk was found among people who ate seven or more servings of onions a week, compared to people who did not eat onions. Garlic lovers were 25% less likely to develop colon cancer than people who avoided garlic. While lab studies have found that the sulphur compounds in garlic and some antioxidant flavonoids contained in onions inhibit tumour growth, the reduction in cancer risk might also be due to an overall healthier diet among onion and garlic lovers.

I have a few questions: 1. Do jams, marmalades and morabbas contain any vitamins? Im aware that theyre high in sugar and calories, but do they retain any of the nutrients present in the fruit

after cooking and processing?2. What about bottled fruit squashes and crushes? Do they offer vitamins like fresh fruit juice?3. Are tomato sauce, mango pickle and lime pickle as nutritious as fresh tomatoes, mango and lime?

    Urmila Shah, Mumbai

    1. Depending on the type of fruit, small quantities of vitamins C and A are present even after processing, but the amount is almost insignificant especially when compared to the

calories and sugar that these products contribute. In all, they cannot be considered a good source of any vitamins or minerals.

    2. Much like jams and morabbas, they will provide vitamins C, A and others in very small quantities when compared to fresh fruit juice, which is nutritionally far superior.

    3. Not at all. They may retain some of the nutrients in very small amounts but are loaded with salt/ oil. Tomato ketchup is a rich source of vitamin A and beta-carotene (an antioxidant) but the sodium content and preservatives negate the benefits of the presence of vitamins. Pickled fruits and vegetables cannot take the place of fresh produce.

One way to help treat prediabetes is to eat pistachios, suggests a recent Spanish study in Diabetes Care. It found that people with prediabetes who ate two ounces (56 gms) of pistachios a day showed improvement in blood sugar, insulin levels and several metabolic risk factors linked to prediabetes, compared to those in the control group, who had a similar diet but without pistachios. While this study focused on pistachios, theres good evidence that other nuts have similar beneficial effects.

These might include: Does my order come with any sauce or dressing? and Is there a low-fat alternative? Flavourful, low-fat sauce and dressing options include vegetable salsa, fruit salsa, fat-free salad dressing, balsamic vinegar and fat-free tartar sauce. • EYE & MIGHTYA sneak peek at the latest advancements in the treatment of eye diseases.

The human eye has an extremely complex design with various functional parts. During the natural course of life, different parts of the eye may suffer damage or degradation due to strain, stress, disease or simply as a result of ageing. Recent

medical advancements have changed the way we treat common eye diseases and

ailments. Lets have a look at the common eye conditions and their treatments.

    Medical Breakthroughs

  • CataractThe eye is like a camera. Light enters the eye and passes through a lens - like in a camera - which focuses the light onto the retina creating an image which is decoded by the brain. This leads to the phenomenon we know as vision.

Cataract is a condition where the human lens in the eye becomes opaque, leading to hazy vision. Glare from the oncoming headlights causes problems when driving during the night. Earlier, a device called a

Phacoemulsifier was used to treat the condition. The tip of this device vibrates rapidly, using ultrasound technology, at up to 40,000 times per second, and breaks the opaque lens that has formed in the eye. While this is colloquially called as the laser removal of cataract, in reality, it is an ultrasound-based method. In the case of hard cataracts, heat from the process can damage the cornea, leading to a long recovery time for the patient.

The latest method of dealing with cataracts is known as Catalys Femto. This is a true laser-based system where there is no penetration into the eye. Instead, within just 35 seconds, the cataract can be broken up, allowing for its removal through a smaller incision than used in traditional cataract

treatment. This treatment can overcome hard cataracts as well without any of the side effects of ultrasound.

Once the cataract is removed, a lens is implanted into the eye, after which the person must wear glasses to see far as well as near objects. This is a problem for people with an active lifestyle, for example, swimmers or athletes. The replacement lens used, these days, for cataract procedures, is known as Trifocal Lens. These soft lenses require a tiny incision and, once implanted, lead to clear vision, free of spectacles, for any distance.

GlaucomaGlaucoma is a condition where there is an increased pressure in the eye which may temporarily or permanently damage the optic nerve, leading to blindness.

This disease affects 7% of the worlds population and may occur without any warning symptoms. Regular check-ups can help avoid the devastating effects of permanent blindness. Using an OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machine, one can catch glaucoma cases early and treat them successfully.

Detection of glaucoma can be done as early as five years prior to the onset of blindness.

Typical treatment of glaucoma is through eye drops that lead to pressure reduction. In some cases where patients suffer from side effects or if the pressure reduction is inadequate, surgery is

  • This has become extremely popular in the West and is catching on in India.

Age Related Macular DegenerationMacular degeneration occurs when the central part of the retina of the eye, the macula, degenerates over time and becomes ineffective in its function. The condition is usually associated with age and robs over 30 million people of normal sight in their twilight years. The distortion of vision begins at the central part of the image, making it particularly difficult to watch television, read and drive.

There are two types of macular degeneration wet and dry: Wet degeneration can be treated

with medication like Aflibercept and Ranibizumab, both of which are injected into the eye.

Dry macular degeneration is a slower progressing condition but also harder to treat.

The latest advancement in the treatment of macular degeneration is through the use of a Ziess MPOD and Autoflourescence machine. This is done along with an OCT machine. This testing determines the health of the retina and also the stage of the degeneration. Using this analysis, treatment is administered in the form of tablets to help halt the progress of the disease.

recommended. A recent German technique known as Canaloplasty can be done which avoids cutting into the eye. An extremely narrow canal, narrower than a human hair, which is blocked in glaucomatous eyes, is opened using a laser. Opening this canal, known as Schlemms canal, leads to predictable and effective pressure release, thus curing the condition without visual loss.

Spectacles Aft er 40 Most people suffer from near-field vision degradation after the age of 40. The lens simply loses its ability to change shape and adjust to a near focus. Reading glasses become necessary after one struggles with adjusting the distance between ones eyes and the reading material. Recently, the replacement of

ones lens with a trifocal lens has become a popular trend. This takes care of both near and long-field vision. First introduced over 16 years ago, the technique, known as Multivue has been refined to the point where there is no glare or noticeable side effect, even during night-time driving. This is a clear win-win solution for the patient.

  • yurveda evolved as an Upveda of the Atharvaveda. It does not limit itself only to human race, same principles are applied in other forms

like Ashvayurveda for horses, Vrukshayurveda for Plants. Ayurveda has a history of more than 5000 years. It is enriched with the knowledge about preventive methods, diseases, causing factors and different treatment modalities. It is based on the three principle functional elements called as the Doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

These along with seven Dhatus and three Malas maintain or vitiate our health and contribute in disease development process. Ayurvedic formulations are time tested and have a history for more than thousands of years. Treatments are mainly based on herbs, shrubs, metals, minerals and certain products from animal kingdom. Complex molecules like cobra venom are also used in different clinical conditions. Every Ayurvedic prescription is a best example of tailor made /customized medicine. Ayurvedic medicines basically try to establish the lost balance of tridoshas. They fortify the weak dhatus using various medicines and regimens. These regimens usually include Shodhana (detoxification), Shamana (pacifying) and Rasayana. Shodhana modality eliminates the doshas with help of various Panchakarmas like Vamana, Virechana, Raktamokshana etc. The Shamana modality pacifies the vitiated doshas and subtly eliminates them from body. They are in form of tablets, processed Ghee, Oil , Choorna, Decoctions etc. Rasayana. Apunarbhava modality which aims at prevention, reoccurrence of the disease and building up the immunity against the same. This collective approach gives wonderful results in a shorter span of time.

About 40% of the issues involved with infertility are due to the man, another 40% due to the woman, and 20% result from complications with both partners. It is our general observation that overall percentage of couples with infertility has risen up a lot in past two decades. The increased incidence can be attributed to newly adopted lifestyle, altered work culture, night shifts, long working hours with odd shift timing, improper sleeping

on rise in the young population. These do have immediate impacts as well as a compromised vitality in both genders. Excessive consumption of ready to eat items is not recommended as these are very rich in different types of salts, stabilizers, acidity regulators, preservatives etc. These primarily vitiate Shukra Dhatu in our body.

Most of the times diagnostic procedures are within normal limits but still the causes of infertility remain unknown. Failure to conceive by natural or artificial means and to carry the conceived pregnancy is observed. The causes in these cases are mostly beyond any logical explanation. Ayurveda goes a little beyond and shares different views about such infertility cases. Rutumati is the natural fertile period of a woman i.e. few days before and during ovulation. This is the exact time when a female is completely receptive for sperm(purusha beeja) and probably is the best time for a successful conception. Each day female body undergoes changes for probable conception and pregnancy resulting there off.

The uterine wall is nourished and is stored with necessary contents each day and till an optimal endometrial thickness is achieved

on days near ovulation. If conception occurs the newly formed embryo embeds itself in this uterine walls and starts growing there. It gets its nourishment from the layers of uterine walls. It grows in this manner for next two to three months until the umbilical cord starts to develop. In case of failure to conceive these uterine nourishing coats shed off as menstrual fluid. It is very necessary for every female to have a natural and healthy menstrual cycle. It should be devoid of any pain, heaviness, clots and ample amount of flow suggests a good uterine health. Symptoms like white discharge, pain and tenderness in breasts, mood swings, clots, foul smell of the blood discharge, scanty menses, excessive flow of blood require a medical intervention as these can result in PCOS and infertility in long run. What Ayurveda can offer?Problems at psychological level are solved by counselling sessions for both the partners, while physical problems like abnormalities in semen profile, motility, abnormal forms, lower sperm counts etc and abnormalities related to ovulation, egg size, endometrial thickness etc. require both Shodhan, Shamana and Rasayana modalities. Physician needs to find out the exact cause and nature of vitiation and plan the treatment accordingly. Internal medicines condition the quality of reproductive tissue and organs their by yielding a successful conception the natural way, a better success rate in IVF and IUI. Uttarbasti is special type of procedure and certain medicines are administered in the uterus. Specialized types of bastis like Vrushya Basti enhance the quality and quantity of semen and sperms in situ. Every couple should undergo these regimens before conception to have healthy baby.

    GLOW MORE!

Glowing skin is always in. It not only makes you look beautiful, but also reflects your health. But its hard to maintain healthy, flawless complexion in todays busy lifestyle.

Dr Bindu Sthalekar, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Mumbai, points out the common skin complaints people approach her with and the latest treatments available for the same

Tanning And Dull SkinFirst, identify your skin type and accordingly choose a cleanser. Oily skin requires a cleanser with salicylic acid and exfoliants to remove the outer dead layer of the skin. A mild cleanser is recommended for dry skin. Use sunscreen for UV protection.

TREATMENTS Chemical peels: In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which is then peeled off. It helps combat dullness. Microdermabrasion: It is basically an exfoliation and skin

  • rejuvenation procedure that leaves skin looking softer and brighter. The Laser-Q Switch 1064: This infrared laser treatment helps even out skin tone.

Stretch MarksThey are actually scars which have formed due to a tear in the dermis (second layer of the skin). Stretch marks are formed when the overlying skin stretches due to the underlying fat increase or when muscles bulk up or in pregnancy. They are pinkish when just formed but with time become white in colour. Stretch marks cannot be treated completely but various treatments can improve the appearance of the skin by 50-70%. TREATMENTS Daily application of topical creams: Containing tretinoin and a weekly microdermabrasion can help in increasing collagen synthesis but only in the initial pinkish stages. Microneedling by dermaroller and erbium YAG Laser: This procedure promotes new collagen synthesis that slowly helps fade stretch marks.

Sagging SkinWith age, skin becomes thin and inelastic. There is loss of fat, and bones shrink too. Lines and wrinkles form, leading to deep folds and jowls.TREATMENTS Thread lifts: Slim needles with thin biodegradable threads are placed in a linear fashion under the skin. There is collagen build up around the thread that helps suspend the skin. It requires no incision or stitches. The result is visible after four to six weeks and lasts only for a few years.

Radiofrequency: A non-invasive procedure, wherein heat is generated in the deeper layers of the skin causing collagen production thereby leading to skin tightening. Multiple sessions are required. Botulinum Toxin (Botox): Classified as an injectable muscle relaxant, Botox can reduce fine lines, especially in the forehead, frown lines and crows feet. Although its a quick procedure, the effect lasts for four to six months and needs to be repeated.

Fillers are injected where there is loss of subcutaneous fat on the face, especially the

    cheeks.

  • MALE GROOMING Dr Sthalekar has noticed men of all ages and professions coming forward for clinical treatment as part of overall wellness and grooming. Men have thicker skin with larger pores, sweat more and have increased sebum or oil secretion as compared to women. They tend to have less lines and wrinkles but their skin sags excessively around the jaws and neck giving them ugly jowls.

Common Treatments For Men:A) Laser hair removal: Hair on the chest and back.B) Skin tightening and jawline definition with radiofrequency.C) Lines and wrinkles on forehead and around eyes with Botox.D) Fat loss in cheeks is dealt with fillers.

is loss of elasticity of the skin and prominent veins and tendons, giving it an appearance of skeletonisation.

TREATMENTS Microdermabrasion and chemical peels (explained earlier). Lasers: Non-invasive lasers help improve the appearance of the skin and decrease pigmentation. Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers are used in volumizing and replacing the lost fat, and restoring the youthful appearance of hands.

Fillers: It is a safe, non-surgical procedure that softens facial lines and furrows. The most popular choice in fillers are cross linked hyaluronic acid. Fillers are injected where there is loss of subcutaneous fat on the face, especially the cheeks. It gives instant results but if not done correctly, bruising, nodules (though rare), pain and irregular lumps can occur.

Hand RejuvenationIn the aged hand, the skin appears thinner and wrinkled with pigmentation. In some cases, there

Men tend to have less lines

and wrinkles but their skin sags

    Medical Breakthroughs

  • A Rapanzul-like hair is everyones wish. But modern lifestyle coupled with increasing stress, erratic eating habits and poor nutrition make our hair-goals unachievable.

Here, we list five most common hair complaints you may face, along with the new treatments available today...

Male Patt ern Hair Th inningOn achieving puberty, the male hormone androgen starts flowing freely in the body which is responsible for hair growth all over the body. Ironically, the same hormone causes the destruction of the hair follicles in those who are genetically predisposed to baldness in the frontal region.TREATMENTS: Surgical camouflage: The hair on the back of the head, that is genetically programmed not to fall, is transplanted to the front under local anesthesia. The procedure requires one or two sittings and hair growth is visible within three to four months. It provides coverage but it cannot add volume as the patients own hair is used. Non-surgical camouflage: It is a non-surgical hair implant and integration, with a derma base just like your second skin. The hair is high quality synthetic hair which is heat, chemical and water-resistant. Temporary camouflage: It is an instant remedy for baldness where Keratin Hair Fibres are sprinkled over the thinning area. These fibres electrostatically bond to your hair, giving it the appearance of fullness. They stay in place until you shampoo. Since its a temporary camouflage, it needs to be done every time you shampoo your hair.

Female Patt ern Hair Th inningHair thinning in women can be caused by hormonal factors, stress, consumption of oral contraceptives or menopause. It may also occur after a hysterectomy, childbirth or hormone replacement therapy. TREATMENTS: Anagrow therapy: A Swiss-Italian technique, wherein plant stem cell extracts of Swiss apple, Argan tree and pea sprouts, are made into a potion. It aims at reviving degenerated hair root stem cells. Anacover: A revolutionary technique developed in Israel, it provides instant, supposedly permanent scalp cover by primarily camouflaging the problem. It creates an illusion of real hair.

The same hormone that is responsible

    for hair growth post puberty,

    causes the destruction of

the hair follicles in those who

    are genetically predisposed to

    baldness.

  • Dandruff The shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp (white in colour), is dandruff. The most common symptom of dandruff is scaling. TREATMENTS:Treatment would depend on the extent of the problem. Rinse hair with a mild anti-dandruff shampoo, perhaps with Arnica, once a week, and with a mild scalp cleanser twice a week. Arnica is known to eliminate dandruff without depleting the oil cover of the scalp. Overuse of medicated shampoo will cause more harm than good. It is vital to consult your trichologist for the type of shampoo for your scalp condition as well as the frequency of using it.

Damage From Chemical TreatmentsRegular streaking and dyeing can cause cumulative damage. Permanent chemical dyes may damage the hair by breaking through the cuticle shield to invade the cortex. They may also cause alopecia or a skin disease called dermatitis. TREATMENTS:First, discontinue all treatments and let your hair grow out, especially in case of damage due to perming and straightening. Hot oil and hydra spa therapy for hair rejuvenation may be recommended. Tricho-scalp-treatment helps healthy hair growth along with special rejuvenating masks. If your hair is damaged because of constant colouring, AnaDtox, a detoxification treatment with wheat and quinoa protein, may help.

HairfallMore often than not, hair loss is nothing but a signal of internal imbalance like poor health, lack of nutrition and stressful lifestyle. However, once the reason is determined and treated, hair goes back to its normal pattern of shedding and growing. TREATMENTS:Treatment options for temporary hair loss are mostly symptomatic in nature and will be done after taking into account the amount of hair loss along with the plausible cause. Dietary changes may be prescribed too. Reduce use of hair accessories like pins and clips as well as hairstyling products. Topical solution for your scalp or even internal medication may be given to regenerate hair especially if it is in the initial thinning phase. A good hair nourisher can control and stop hairfall.

    PRETTY PEARLS

  • Today, patients want dental procedures that are accurate, painless and done in a jiffy.

Dr Mahesh M Lalwani, dental surgeon and specialist in Oral Medicine, lists five most common dental complaints that people face and the technological advancements to treat em.

Pain First, the cause of the pain has to be identified. It could be either from a tooth, gums or any other oral structures, or even a neurological pain.

TREATMENTSPain has to be treated with medication, or by procedures that will fix the source of the problem. For instance, if the pain is due to cavity, it has to be treated by doing a filling. Or if its a deep cavity, a root canal is suggested. Fillings: Earlier, fillings used to be a combination of silver and mercury. With time, research has proved that mercury is harmful. So today we have epoxy resin composites which can be activated by light. They come in different shades of white and can even be made translucent to match the actual tooth colour. Caps: With the advent in technology, a dentist doesnt have to physically make a tooth. Now, a computer scan of the patients tooth is enough for machines to mill the teeth accordingly from a block of ceramic. Earlier, gold was used for caps, but as gold prices increased, dentists started using non-precious metals. Non-precious metals contained nickel, which is again harmful for health. So today, we have metal-free ceramic and

porcelain caps. The only downside, they are much more expensive. Root Canal: Today, root canal can be done in one sitting. Thanks to machines like rotary machine and apex locator which help determine the length and breadth of the tooth. Also, there are pre-formed filling materials, which can be just fit in.

Gum ProblemsBleeding gums is more often caused due to tartar, but that may not be the only cause of it. Often there is another underlying cause like a systemic disease, blood dyscrasia or even cancer.

TREATMENTS Surgery: Today, lasers and electrocautery are used to cut off the gum instead of traditional scalpel. Its a quick and painless procedure with no bleeding or bruising involved. Scaling: Ultrasonic cleaning removes plaque and tartar from under the gum line in less time

  • TREATMENTBone augmentation: Gum surgeries can be performed where the gum is lifted or bone augmentation is done where bone (either the patients own bone or a synthetic bone) is used to fill up gaps between the teeth.

Cosmetic AspectsJust like superstars and models, everybody wants perfect white, gleaming and straight teeth. But there are many cosmetic problems, like improper alignment of the teeth, yellow teeth, protruding teeth etc.

TREATMENTSHome and office bleach system: In the past, patients had to wear special trays that came with a whitening gel overnight. In the dentists office, special gels are put around the gums to protect them and then a concentrate of carbamide peroxide is put which is then activated by special lights. This leads to teeth whitening, in one sitting. Bonding or veneers: You can mask your original tooth by putting a layer of synthetic enamel which will mimic the tooth. It lasts for five years, or even a lifetime depending on how well it is taken care of by the patient. Implants: In case of a missing tooth, one can opt for an implant where the original tooth is not needed. It is basically a titanium screw, which is put after drilling a hole in the bone and then loading the tooth on it.

    ARCHANA IYER

than traditional scaling. Sometimes, its the tartar thats holding on the tooth, and hence when cleaned, the tooth becomes loose.

Bad BreathVery often, bad breadth causes a social problem. If you have bad teeth, thats going to give you bad breath. The other sources of bad breath may include sinusitis, ENT, lung or even a stomach problem. For instance, when you drink alcohol, the analyzer shows the alcohol in your breath, not in your mouth. Children get bad breath owing to their diet from milk. There are certain gases present in the breath, and theres a machine that detects the level of bad breath.

TREATMENTThe cause of the bad breath has to be identified, and once the cause is treated, bad breath goes away.

Food stickingThe most common cause of food getting stuck between the teeth, is a cavity. In elderly people, it is mostly because the gums start to recede and you start getting gaps between the teeth.

If you have bad teeth, thats going to give

    you bad breath. The other

    sources of bad breath may

  • Once considered as a marker of well-being, being overweight is now a red carpet to a constellation of diseases. In the current era, when the world is tackling the epidemic of diabetes, obesity is indeed posing a parallel threat.

Lets get to the bottom of the problem right away to truly understand it.

First, calculate your BMIThe BMI calculator can be used for determining obesity. Here, a persons weight in kilograms is divided by the square of his or her height in meters. A result of over 24 is cause for serious concern. Obesity is a disease and thus medical management of obesity is of great importance and must be used as a remedy along with commonly suggested diet plans and lifestyle changes. When a persons BMI exceeds 32, he or she is diagnosed as morbidly obese. In such a situation, bariatric surgery is often recommended.

Various diseases like heart disease and diabetes are linked with obesity. With every kilogram lost, an obese person gains an advantage in the fight over diabetes and blood pressure problems amongst other chronic conditions. In order to truly and effectively control obesity, one needs to sustain the weight loss achieved by an individual. This management is as vital as any treatment method itself.

Advances in Treatment Modalities for Weight Loss and Obesity When we talk about clinical advancements in the treatment of obesity, it is important to tackle the problem thoroughly. The first step in obesity management is to identify the causes using patient history, clinical examination, laboratory tests and imaging. One should also identify the complications associated with obesity through the same method.

Once we know the cause, it becomes easier to tackle the condition. The obvious first step includes dietary modification, exercise promotion and lifestyle changes. After these, come medical and surgical management. The last two options are aimed at moderate to serious cases of obesity where the disease has overtaken the life of the individual. As doctors, we focus

Similarly, medicines that provide a feeling of fullness help reduce the intake of food in the first place.

Pros: There are several advantages to choosing medical management of obesity. The process is affordable and

non-surgical, and hence does not require hospitalisation.
